Greece, Democracy, And Magical Thinking

Regardless of what the Greek people choose, at least the choice will be theirs, along with the consequences.
What is representative democracy but organized bribery on a mass scale? Politicians seeking control of the spigots of state wealth and power promise endless swag to voters. Those who promise the most swag and do so with the most inspirational Soaring Rhetoric (tm) win elections and gain control of the spigots of state wealth and power.
What are promises of endless swag but lies cloaked in magical thinking? The magical thinking has many manifestations: the aptly named Laffer Curve, used to justify cutting taxes to the already-wealthy; entry into the Eurozone, a magical land of unicorns and endless prosperity, based not on hard work and the creation of value, but on membership alone; the blowing of serial asset bubbles in real estate and stocks (works equally well in Asia and the West), and various iterations of Manifest Destiny: it's our right to grow rich, preferably on the labor and resources of others.
Representative democracy offers choices with no consequences: no matter which politico and party is elected, the promises of endless swag remain unchanged.
In contrast, direct democracy offers choices with consequences: voters make a choice of policies that, whether intended or not, have consequences.
This forces voters to actually ponder consequences rather than indulge politico promises of endless swag in return for supporting a corrupt, predatory, parasitic status quo that benefits the few at the expense of the many.
Even direct democracy is easily corrupted by magical thinking. The actual consequences may be ignored in favor of magical-thinking dreams of only good consequences and no trade-offs or sacrifices, all powered by the magic of debt.
Debt is the ultimate political aphrodisiac, for it enables an orgy of consumption and a bacchanalia of spending on the backs of children and the yet unborn who don't vote.
The most potent of all political fantasies is that growth will solve every problem, i.e. we can grow our way out of corruption, artifice, lies, kleptocracy and most importantly, out of debt.
And so now, at long last, the Greek people have a direct say on whether they prefer magical thinking (i.e. that a debt-based, Elite-ruled kleptocracy can produce endless swag for all as long as the kleptocracy is within the European Union) or the real world of trade-offs, opportunity costs, sacrifices and broad-based growth that must be earned by producing more than is spent and investing the surplus in productive assets rather than being squandered on interest payments for past consumption.
Direct democracy is anathema to politicos, Elites, state bureaucracies, vested interests and kleptocracies, because the people might refuse to be bribed by magical thinking promises.
Elected representatives and the public can both be bribed or threatened into compliance, but when the promises of endless debt-based swag for all fade, it's the people who bear the consequences, not the politicos.
There are no guarantees that the people will choose more wisely than their representatives. The masses can choose magical thinking over reality, too. But with direct democracy, at least the people have an opportunity to choose wisely.
Regardless of what the Greek people choose, at least the choice will be theirs, along with the consequences.

Democracy (as in universal suffrage) works only at the very local level. And still, it is no panacea, if the moral and natural principle of individual liberty is not understood by most.

...and the most local level is the individual. The only place it actually works. Democracy, by definition, is the majority of a group imposing their will, by violence, on the minority. It is gang mentality that always allows an out. When it doesn't work the winners complain that the losers did not obey and the losers complain that they were disenfranchised. Only when the individual is free to make his/her own decisions in real time thru the market does the self determination wrongly implied in democracy actually works.

The Greeks already had their vote, and they got exactly what they chose -- Sexy Alexy Tsipras the anti-austerity socialist doing exactly what he promised, namely to bluff the EU with a pair of threes jack high. I was under the impression that the real choice that the Greeks had was austerity under the EU and perpetual debt slavery, or even worse austerity on their own with a chance of breaking the debt slavery.
It begins with "let us take care of your monetary system for you, it's far too subtle and complicated for the average person to understand, and this way you can avoid calamity caused by the unchecked passions of the masses."
It ends with "let us take care of your political system for you, it's far too subtle and complicated for the average person to understand, and this way you can avoid calamity caused by the unchecked passions of the masses."
Would it be possible to start a global organization based on open source software and crypto-currency so votes could be verified and democracy restored. A parallel global government.
"The people" is used by both sides as justification for their actions and now a vote ex post facto to justify themselves instead of growing a pair and standing up themselves won't help or fix a damned thing. Unfortunately in Greece and elsewhere, there has been a symbiotically parasitic relationship between the electors and the elected. The politicians made promises in return for votes and power, and the electors offered to sell their votes for "kickbacks" that ultimately they would pay for.
Democracy has never been about just rights but also obligations and this has been lost sight of with the rise of the corporate and social welfare state in one form or another.
Above all however, a strange and dangerous mix of misguided soclalism and wanton capitalism provided a debt fuelled euphoria that seemingly worked while the balloon was filled with helium.
But balloons have their limits because there are limits to what a system can produce especially when everyone is endeavouring to take out more than they put in at the expense of the next person.
Ultimately the biggest progress in all this debacle will be when people can contain their expectations and demands and instead focus on needs and means.

Democracy in Greece (birthplace of western civilization and democracy) connotes a referendum, open debate and the weighing of facts as to who incurred the debt and who owns the debt. Were there corruption, bribery, and coercion of government officials involved in incurring the debt? What liability do the Greek People have for criminal debt? Is the loaner of money as responsible as the borrower of the money to fulfill reasonable completion of the contract? If the loaner of the money knew that the Greek government could never pay back the money; why did they loan them the money? Was criminal bankster entrapment involved to blindside the borrower by deceitful contracts? How much money was lost by bankster bond, securities and mortgage fraud?
If bankster criminal fraud, debt and chaos is behind the Greek financial crisis, arrest them and bring them to trial as criminals to society and if found guilty; hang the criminals and repudiate the debt.
That is what democracy is about: government of, for and by the People.

Hugh-Smith continues to also be indulging in "magical thinking" which he seems not aware of doing, because of the degree that he continues to take for granted the dominate natural language that he uses to think through and communicate with, as well as continues to take for granted the dominate philosophy of science, which has developed INTENSELY PARADOXICAL WAYS of maintaining totally inverted views of basic energy laws, so that those could continue to be consistent with the biggest bullies' bullshit world view, since the REAL history of civilization has been the history of backing up deceits with destruction, morphing to become enforced frauds.
At the core of that was warfare, operating the most significant of the death control systems, which were the human murder systems. Those murder systems became the ideology of militarism, which is the supreme ideology, and deserves to be the supreme ideology, since all of economics actually fits inside of that history of warfare. The oldest book on The Art of War starts by saying that "success in war is based on deceits," and ends by saying "spies are that most important soldiers." Thousands of years of that were what developed the ability to indulge in "magical thinking," which the controlled opposition groups do even more than the core of organized crime does. "Magical thinking" is an adaptation to the real world being controlled by backing up lies with violence, which led to the development of a political economy based upon enforcing frauds. It is ALSO "magical thinking" to refuse to recognize how and why the real world is controlled by systems that enforce frauds. There are deeper reasons for that, which are NOT faced either, which are ways that "magical thinking" extends throughout the controlled opposition groups, that surround the core of organized crime.
"Magical thinking" becomes INTENSELY PARADOXICAL, due to each short-term increment of being able to control civilization by backing up lies with violence, which became systems of legalized lies, backed by legalized violence, driven by progress in physical science to become amplified to astronomical sizes! The essence of the "magical thinking" is that serves the short-term interests of the application of the principles and methods of organized crime, in order that some people can benefit from controlling other people. The medium-term effects of that become the ways in which the core of organized crime ends up surrounded by controlled opposition groups. The longer term effects of that are society as a whole becomes terminally sick and insane, due to more and more psychotically going out of touch with relatively more objective realities, due to the progressive triumphs of "magical thinking," as the result of the ways that civilization was being controlled by backing up lies with violence, which works all too well in the short to medium term, but less and less well in the longer term.
The existing systems of ENFORCING FINANCIAL FRAUDS were due to a long history of the application of the methods and principles of organized crime, on larger and larger scales, magnified many orders of magnitude by progress in physical sciences, which was never matched by progress in political science, since such progress would have to be based upon facing the facts that governments were necessarily the biggest forms of organized crime, controlled by the best organized gangs of criminals. The heart of the resulting "magical thinking" is to deliberately ignore how and why the basic laws of nature applied to human beings and civilizations, and moreover, to reverse the meaning of those basic laws of nature, since the only connections between the laws of men and the laws of nature were the ability to back up lies with violence.
To NOT engage in such "magical thinking" on the deeper levels requires facing the facts about natural selection, which have manifested through artificial selection systems, to become death controls based on the maximum possible deceits, and debt controls based on the maximum possible frauds, which basic facts were deliberately denied as much as possible by both the core of organized crime, and the surrounding layers of controlled opposition. Therefore, we are watching the contradictions get bigger and BIGGER between progress in physical science, being primarily applied to get better at backing up lies with violence, without any progress in political science in order to understand that. Indeed, rather than progress in physical science being allowed to transform political science, instead the politics was able to invert the meaning of the progress made in physical science, so that there would continue to be developed more and more of the paradoxical ways that "magical thinking" also dominated the philosophy of science.
To NOT indulge in so much "magical thinking" would require reconciliation of physical science with political science, which reconciliation has to go both ways, in order to cope with both the progress in technology, and the corruption of the philosophy of science. However, instead, we continue to watch increasingly out of control systems based upon enforcing frauds drive their inherent contradictions to become bigger and BIGGER, and therefore, for civilization to become more psychotic and criminally insane, due to the longer term INTENSE PARADOXES that short and medium term successes of organized crime, and its controlled opposition, become worse and WORSE longer term failures, due to their PARADOXICAL final failure from to much of that kind of social success.
To promote more genuinely scientific thinking about politics, instead of "magical thinking" through politics, it is necessary to go through series of intellectual scientific revolutions, which are able to reconcile natural selection based upon natural laws, with the forms of artificial selection which currently exist, which are still based upon natural laws, BUT which went through the history of warfare to become social pyramid systems based upon being able to back up deceits with destruction, and enforce frauds, since human laws were only connected to natural laws through being able to back up lies with violence.
All "elections" and any possible "referenda" are bubbling up inside of situations where the social pyramid systems in which those events occur were due to selection pressures driven by thousands of years of warfare, followed by at least a Century of globalized ENFORCED FINANCIAL FRAUDS AS THE FOUNDATION OF THE POLITICAL ECONOMY (both of Greece and every other country more or less.) Therefore, thousands of years of backing up lies with violence, followed by Centures of increasingly more legalized lies backing up legalized violence (all of which social situations were developed in ways that those basic social facts were as deliberately denied as much as possible by those who were the best at doing that), is the context inside of which any possible "elections" or "referenda" might possibly occur.
The basic theory of "democracy" is almost always being promoted within the bullshit based on false fundamental dichotomies and the related impossible ideals. THE CENTRAL FACTS ARE THE DEATH CONTROLS THAT BACK UP THE DEBT CONTROLS. However, real human history has developed those to become most socially successful when based upon the maximum possible deceits and frauds, which is the SOURCE OF THE REINFORCEMENT FOR "MAGICAL THINKING."
At the present time, it is politically impossible for enough people to overcome the degree to which they have been conditioned to believe in bullshit for their whole lives. There are never given realistic choices, because every real decision that was ever made was primarily made through the historical processes whereby lies were backed up with violence, which resulting in entrenching more and more "magical thinking."
With respect to the Greek debt insanities, which are one of the leading symbolic edges of the globalized debt insanities, the essential issues have always been that money is measurement backed by murder. Asking the Greek people what to do about their monetary situation is simultaneously to ask about their murder system sitation. However, the history of enforced frauds, based upon the history of deceits backed by destruction, have buried the facts about the real murder systems backing up the real money systems as deeply as possible, so that there can not be any rational public debates about the real issues, and therefore, any "democracy" which has "elections" or "referenda" tends to necessarily be some kind of fake.
THE MOST IMPORTANT FORMS OF "MAGICAL THINKING" HAVE THEIR SOURCES IN THE MURDER SYSTEMS, WHICH BACKED UP THE MONETARY SYSTEMS.

Bribery, intimidation, and assassination of those who could not otherwise be bribed or intimidated, were the hallmarks of the methods of organized crime, which were applied to the political processes persistently in order to achieve the standing situation, whereby governments enforce the frauds by privately controlled banks, which standing situation people were born into and lived their entire lives within.
IF one engages in deeper and deeper levels of analysis, then one may better reconcile natural laws with human laws. However, actually doing that demonstrates the degree to which the central features are necessarily the death control systems, which were most socially successful by being the most deceitful and treacherous, which kinds of social success drove all of the subsequent triumphs of wide-spread "magical thinking" to become some pervasive and ubiquitous.
The dominance of "magical thinking" is due to the covert dominance of triumphant organized crime. The vast majority of people have lived within those entrenched systems for generation after generation, and their adaption to that reality is their "magical thinking." Furthermore, all of the various kinds of controlled opposition groups, which surround the core of organized crime, were controlled to promote "magical thinking," as their covert assistance to the core of organized crime, because, after all, they were selected to be co-opt and compromised to be able to operate inside of the systems of organized crime.
Moreover, the deeper analysis one should follow leads to recognizing that it is NOT possible for there to be NO death control systems, because death necessarily comes as a package deal with life! Indeed, from a biological point of view, sex and death come as a package deal, while, from a sociological point of view, money and murder come as a package deal.
To discuss the debt controls without the death controls is to be deliberately ignorant. Therefore, any "elections" or "referenda" which purport to be about the debt problems, while not simultaneously being about the death problems, are deliberately misleading, and so, misrepresent the nature of the "choices" being made. Therefore, Hugh-Smith's views of either representative or direct democracy are ridiculously Polly-Annish.
I REPEAT the basics:
Greeks are merely at one of the leading edges of the basic problems of debt slavery systems driving their numbers towards debt insanities, which will probably provoke death insanities. Meanwhile, the only way that something like a democratic republic operating through the rule of law, could become more real, rather than a worsening sham, would be IF enough people understood the basic facts.
THE VAST MAJORITY OF PEOPLE WERE TAUGHT MAGICAL THINKING ABOUT ENFORCED FRAUDS. Furthermore, all of the publicly significant opposition groups were controlled to stay within that frame of reference of magical thinking, since they deliberately ignore the ways that money is necessarily money backed by murder, because the debt controls are backed by the death controls, and therefore, no discussion of the debt problems make any sense outside of the discussion of the death problems.
Enough people would have to understand the real world enough to enable real democracy to operate through a real rule of law. However, the established systems are all FAKES: fake education, enabling a fake democracy. Tragically, it is practically impossible to overcome the degree to which the vast majority of people have been misinformed about everything during their whole lives, by their schools and the mass media. Hence, it is politically impossible to stop the runaway debt insanities provoking death insanities. Despite the obvious facts being that the debt controls are backed by the death controls, the vast majority of people do not want to understand that. If and only if enough people understood that money is measurement backed by murder, would it be possible for an actual democracy to exist and to survive, because enough people understood the principles and methods of organized crime enough to be able to develop better dynamic equilibria between the different systems of organized lies operating robberies. However, of course, the world is now almost totally the opposite, since the vast majority of people continue deliberately misunderstanding their actual society, which kinds of magical thinking were promoted by those who benefited from that being the case, at least in the short to medium term. The world is now almost totally dominated by the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites, throughout both the core of the organized crime, as well as throughout all of the various controlled opposition groups. The fundamental facts about DEBT SLAVERY destroy democracy and the rule of law. Those facts automatically become vicious spirals that get worse, faster. After DEBT SLAVERY is established, through the best organized gangsters, the banksters, being able to apply the methods of organized crime through the political processes, in order to effectively privatize the public "money" supply, then that DEBT SLAVERY must necessarily become DEBT INSANITIES, which then must be backed up with DEATH INSANITIES.
Any real, radical, revolution would require the people to take back control of the public money supply. However, that is not possible unless enough of the people understood that money is necessarily measurement backed by murder, and that all private property was based upon backing up claims with coercions, and that no private property existed outside of some system of public violence. Democracy can not be anything else than another form of organized crime, which may enable greater use of information, and thus enable a higher consciousness. As long as too few people understand the principles and methods of organized crime, then those who are the relatively tiny minority of the best organized gangsters, the banksters, will continue to be able to control the vast majority of the people. At the present time, those banksters are able to control their opposition, to the degree that there appears to be no genuine opposition. Instead, the controlled opposition continues to promote false fundamental dichotomies, and the related impossible ideals, which continue to actually cause the opposite to happen.
After the banksters succeeded in making and maintaining their core systems of DEBT SLAVERY, based upon governments enforcing the frauds of those banksters, then everything else automatically suffers more and more from the contractions that enforcing frauds never stops those frauds from still being false.
MAGICAL THINKING BECOMES PARADOXICALLY MORE AND MORE DOMINANT INSIDE OF THAT SOCIAL SITUATION! The only, but quite dim, and mostly irrational, hope is that enough of those sorts of debt insanities provoking death insanities might be able to provoke enough people to think about the basic facts regarding how money is measurement backed by murder. There is NO WAY for "We the People" anywhere in the world to regain control over the public money supply THAN IF enough of them were able to sufficiently understand how and why money is measurement backed by murder. Therefore, the vast majority of people do not understand that, because they have been successfully conditioned to not want to understand, and have been more and more scientifically brainwashed to believe in bullshit, to the degree that they want to continue to believe in bullshit, i.e., continue to INDULGE IN MAGICAL THINKING!
The degree to which the public "money" supply has been almost totally privatized is also the degree to which citizens have become incompetent political idiots, who behave like Zombie Sheeple. It is not possible to have a democratic republic operating through the rule of law when the vast majority of the so-called "citizens" have actually become incompetent political idiots, or Zombie Sheeple, that are being fleeced to exhaustion, while being set up to be slaughtered. Greece is merely a symbolic leading edge of the overall globalized processes of DEBT SLAVERY becoming orders of magnitude worse, faster. The Greek Zombie Sheeple are being fleeced to exhaustion, while they are being set up to be slaughtered, in similar ways to those that most of the rest of the world's population are being set up. The only remotely possible theory, that one might be able to maintain some irrational hopes could happen, are that enough of the debt insanities driving death insanities, would cause enough people to face the facts about their DEBT SLAVERY. However, they probably will not be able to do that, because they will probably continue to be misled backwards by the controlled opposition groups, who refuse to face the facts that money is measurement backed by murder, but rather, will continue to promote their impossible ideals about what "money" should be, that deliberately ignore what "money" actually is, as much as possible, for as long as possible.

The theory of representative democacy is that the people will have the wisdom to elect representatives with sufficient character, ethics and considered judgement to lead the country through the various challenges it encounters.
