Massive Greek "No" Protest In Front Of Parliament - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

"To stay or not to stay," that is the question for Greeks ahead of Tuesday's default to the IMF and a historic referendum set for this coming weekend.

With the ATMs running dry and lines forming at gas stations and grocery stores, Greeks are understandably restless and have once again gathered en masse in Syntagma Square.

(Live feed)

As a refresher, this is where things stand:

Earlier today, as the exchange between Greece and its creditors got increasingly belligerent, Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas told public broadcaster Eesti Rahvusringhaaling in interview that a possible Greek decision to leave euro area wouldn’t soften stance of other EU countries and that Greece’s debt would still remain outstanding and creditors would expect this money back."

"If Greece leaves, the value of their new national currency would decline very fast, so their solvency would still worsen further. They will either have to cut spending or improve their tax revenues. There are no other options."

So did this latest antagonism change the Greek mind? According to a flash headline by the WSJ released moments ago, not all. In fact, Greece just made it official that it would default to the IMF in just over 24 hours.

And earlier today:

With Europe making it very clear that unless Greece folds in the next 48 hours, there will be no deal on which the Greeks will be conducting their "Greferendum" as Greece will be programless after June 30, there has been ample confusion about just what the wording of the ballot will be to which the Greek population will say Nai or Oxi. As the following latest snapshot confirms, even the Greek side is rather confused and is now essentially telling people to vote on a deal that was proposed once (on June 25) and may or may no longer be relevant.

This takes place even as moments ago Germany's minister for economic affairs Sigmar Gabriel explained just what a No vote would entail:

  • GERMANY GABRIEL: GREEK NO VOTE A VOTE FOR EURO AREA EXIT

Even though there was clearly some confusion as the push to set the narrative begins:

  • MERKEL SAYS NONE OF US WANT TO TELL GREEK PEOPLE HOW TO VOTE

A clear lie as just moment prior we got this:

  • JUNCKER: I WOULD LIKE TO ASK GREECE TO VOTE 'YES'

However the outcome, I'm happy that this is all contained, Greece will be "fixed" with a new deal, there is no risk of market disruption, derivatives are 100% guaranteed solid, and housing is not in a bubble.

Plan to re-establish Greek national sovereignty:

1) Walk away from the euro and re-institute the drachma

2) Drachmas to be created by the State Treasury only in a publicly transparent manner

3) 100% Reserve private sector banking

Provided they can avoid getting trapped by Putin and China into the upcoming UN backed BRIC dominated IMF-SDR "Good" NWO scam that the Global Financial Elite are setting up Greece will be free.

"If Greece leaves, the value of their new national currency would decline very fast, so their solvency would still worsen further. They will either have to cut spending or improve their tax revenues. There are no other options."

Greece already said they would increase tax revenue - but by taxing business. That was a sticking point for The Institutions - taxing business was not the *right* way to raise revenue, it had to be done through more austerity.

Problem solved.

What businesses does Greece have left? How much can you tax olive growers and yogurt manufacturers?

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 14:50 | 6250635 imbtween
imbtween's picture

How much "business" does a nation of 10 million people need? They have agriculture, yogurt, tourism, fishing, shipping, metal mining and natgas.
That is a recipe for prosperity for a nation of 10 million. Allowing their bankers to financialize their economy, and leverage their people 60,000 to 1 is what got them in trouble to begin with.

They need to do what Iceland did, jail the financial criminals and go back to making money the old fashioned way, not through fractional reserve chicanery. They could get out of debt that way.

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 15:01 | 6250680 seminal1
seminal1's picture

There is a big difference between Iceland and Greece.

Greece has been building up their national debt for quite some time on their own. Iceland is a case of private irresponsibility at private expense while Greece is more of a case of public irresponsibility at public expense.

Iceland's crisis was triggered by the failure of "private" banks; they had no national debt problem. They're also on a free-floating currency, which was collapsed to boost the country's export power (at the cost of significantly reduced buying power at home -- aka, it's like lowering everyone's salaries and flipping a lot of people upside down on their mortgages). Iceland refused to insure the losses of their banks, but did take huge loans (and implement austerity) to help restructure them during the bankruptcy proceedings; the banks are now worth enough to sell off assets to pay for their debts (although the UK and Netherlands still are suing over the delay).

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 15:07 | 6250715 imbtween
imbtween's picture

Every country that uses a fractional reserve system runs deficits. The Greek debt explosion happened when the nation's private banks went to Athens for a bailout after the Lehman/2008 collapse. Athens said they didn't have the money to bail them out, and the banks said FIND IT or the nation's financial system will collapse.

Athens went to the EU and were denied a bailout - unless - Athens was willing to nationalize the debt.

They agreed, and the financial crisis shackled the people with 360 billion euros of debt.

To suggest it was poor tax collection and early retirement that did them in is buying the bullshit narrative that they WANT you to believe.

Mon, 06/29/2015 - 16:07 | 6250960 ZD1
ZD1's picture

The root cause for the Greece debt explosion was a combination of a decade-long pre-existence of high structural deficits and high debt-to-GDP levels.  It happened well before the Lehman/2008 collapse.

Fact: During the six years from 2004 to 2009, Greek government expenditures increased by 87% against an increase of only 31% in tax revenues.

Fact: The retirement age used to be 55 years in Greece but was increased to the current 57 years for a full pension.

Fact: For decades, Greek governments paid civil servants bonuses for showing up to work on time and 14 months' pay for Christmas. Retirement averaged at 53 years of age for civil servants.

To suggest that the Greek government has been totally responsible and without fault is buying the bullshit narrative that they WANT you to believe.

And downvote this all you want. This blog acts like there are two choices: vote YES or vote NO. But there is a third: move to another EU country. And many will choose that one.

Probably in a court on Wallstreet. Positive outcome for plaintiff guaranteed. Btw, the US congress adopted a motion that would 'allow' for The Hague (a city in an allied country) to be invaded if the international court of justice would apprehend and detain an American citizen. Remember, NL is the US oldest and one of the most loyal ally. First country to recognize the US and this is what they get. I remember when this motion was adopted some people put mock soldiers out made out of carton on the beaches in The Hague to scare off the US army.

Estonian Prime Minister Taavi Roivas' theory is that should Greece start using their own currency the very first thing they will do is trash it paying back creditors. that is too god damned funny.

If Greeks vote no, how much will the bonds of Portugal, Spain, Ireland, Italy and France fall?

Does anyone want Japanese bonds where the depreciation of currency in a week wipes out interest gains of 3 to 5 years?

NuttyYahoo has come out with a real classic. He claims - get this - "you know which cow produces more milk per cow than any other cow? You think it's a Dutch cow or a French cow? No, it's the Jewish cow".

That's right, these cows descend directly from the original Jewish tribes.

Defaulting is the right thing for Greece to do. Sure, they're gonna have a lot of pian for a while but the mood of that huge crowd looks like they know it and are preparing for it emotionally.

After that, they can rebuild their nation, rebuild their economy with co-operation from Russia and China and expunge the criminal banksters, IMF and other assorted parasites and vultures who prey on them.

They will also have to retake control of their nation away from their own criminal/corrupt political elites.

It's hard work but when was something worth achieving not?

Eventually, it's a win-win.

Incorrect.  Just beacause they do not pay does not mean they are defaulting.  They can give everyone the middle finger, but that does not equal a default.  This is the New Normal™ remember..

Check this out.  A fighter crashes in the AZ desert along the Mexican border... rupters a pipeline.

First, AZ officials say nothing.  Second, AZ officials decline to release pilots name.  Thirdly, Officials claim he was one of fourty taking part in a training program..... and now the story changes again.

"The F-16 that crashed near the US-Mexican border belonged to the Iraqi air force, and was flown by Brigadier General Rafid Mohammed Hasan, training with the Arizona Air National Guard...."

"Initial reports identified the aircraft as belonging to the 162nd Wing of the Arizona Air National Guard, based out of the nearby Davis-Monthan Air Force Base. The 162nd also conducts international training for F-16 pilots from the Tucson International Airport, according to its website. Reuters reports pilots from nine countries, including Iraq, are among the trainees"

GERMANY GABRIEL: GREEK NO VOTE A VOTE FOR EURO AREA EXIT"

THIS is the ONLY proposition the Greek people need be concerned with for the next several days.

Even though the question will (at this point) concern a deal that will no longer be on the table, it is first a vote of PRINCIPLE, and therefore, needs to procede as scheduled.

Take a look at what's happening to you now.

The tempo of traumatic events is speeding up, and correspondingly, so are the people's temperatures. A long period of wrangling with EU masters has produced little in the way of a real future for Greece, but HAS added to it's intractable debt. Greeks today are but the first state citizens to face the full effects of lost, stable economies due to outsourcing, and will not be the last.

You have been treated to round after round of socioeconomic browbeating over the fiscal state of your economy, without ANY recognition, let alone constructive action, to address the pernicous ill facing not only you, but indeed much of the rest of the world: LACK OF GOOD MIDDLE CLASS JOBS, AND CORRESPONDING PAYCHECKS, TO REPLACE WHAT WESTERN COORPORATIONS TOOK FROM YOU.

Without this fundamental recognition, AND A LONG OVERDUE CHANGE IN THE AVOIDANCE OF THIS CENTRAL ISSUE, WITH ACTUAL STEPS DEVELOPED AND TAKEN TO REVERSE THE HARM DONE TO WESTERN MIDDLE CLASS ECONOMIES, ANY further talks with the very cretins who aided and abetted the both the players, AND the mechanisms they used, to fatally damage to so many, including YOU, is as POINTLESS as it has been fruitless.

Listen to the arrogant bastards today, telling you essentially, they don't care about you as long as they get their money back.

When did they ever really care?

How much will you have to borrow tomorrow to remain a servant to a union that cares nothing about "union" beyond accumulating and using concentrated power to enslave you?

How much longer will it be before even more is needed, and at what costs?

What are YOU getting for your money?

Go forward with your vote to decide what YOU want to do, not only for yourselves, but your progeny. Remember, what's left of the western middle class world is watching.

This vote is NOT about merely the question posed.

It SHOULD BE about holding accountable, FINALLY, those who have so damaged us for the last 40+ years, and forcing THOSE entities to FINALLY face the ACTUAL problem.

Only THEN can we actually begin any MEANINGFUL recovery.

Greece...take a stand for what's right, and MEAN IT.

If you suffer, at least make it COUNT for something.

REAL accountablility.

REAL change.

The creditors are expecting their money back !  How ? Or the creditors are deluded or they had never been involved in a bankrupt case .

In real life creditors lose their money . If they have been stupid enough to lend money to a country that could not service the existing loans , they , the creditors deserve to lose every penny . It is called " capitalisn " at work .  It seems to me that the troika must reconsider their modus operandi . It is now proven without doubt that " austerity " does not help a country to recover , but on the contrary ' austerity  makes things worse . Greece has lost 25 % of its PIL since the program of " austerity "  was started .  Only Idiots economists do not learn from what happens in the real world .  I suggest a new word to describe economists " wankernomics " .

Phony austerity just like phony capitalism does not work.
You have to make the cuts correctly.
Cut the wasteful crony spending.
Stop idiotic policies where people retire at young age.
Cut the burden of bureaucracy that preventing entrepreneurs from starting and expanding businesses.

And most important - cut off the heads of corrupt politicians.
