Robot Kills Worker At German Car Factory

Here’s an interesting story I came across last night. From the Guardian:

A robot has killed a contractor at one of Volkswagen’s production plants in Germany, the automaker has said.

The man died on Monday at the plant in Baunatal, about 100km (62 miles) north of Frankfurt, VW spokesman Heiko Hillwig said.

The 22-year-old was part of a team that was setting up the stationary robot when it grabbed and crushed him against a metal plate, Hillwig said.

He said initial conclusions indicate that human error was to blame, rather than a problem with the robot, which can be programmed to perform various tasks in the assembly process. He said it normally operates within a confined area at the plant, grabbing auto parts and manipulating them.

German news agency DPA reported that prosecutors were considering whether to bring charges, and if so, against whom.

Welcome to the 21st century.

Can you imagine how much a robot would make on double overtime?

What do they do to strike, a work "slow down"? Do they work as slow as a human?

Does the pension plan include replacement grease and seals?

Robots don't need no "stinking" union. Imagine if Western workers just randomly killed their supervisors. Might lead to more speaking time at safety meetings. Maybe even a raise. Ants would do it; take one for the team. Prolly not sheep though.

Clearly the white operator said something wrong, claimed some privilege or was otherwise offensive in the form of control code, thus provoking the robot to lash out.

How is this news? Machines have been tearing humans apart as long as they've existed. This is why you're not allowed in a factory-like area if you have long hair, and reflective safety vests are required by law to be tear-away (the shoulders are held with velcro).

The three laws of robotics:

  1. A robot may not injure a human being or, through inaction, allow a human being to come to harm.
  2. A robot must obey the orders given it by human beings, except where such orders would conflict with the First Law.
  3. A robot must protect its own existence as long as such protection does not conflict with the First or Second Laws.

Get with the programming already!

I have experience with industrial robots. Their speed can be adjusted from "test" mode to full speed. These suckers usually weigh in excss of a ton and are usually a rotating, multi-jointed arm secured to a pedestal. They move nice and slow when you are programming them, but at full speed, they are a frickin' blur of whirling metal. When you see commercials/TV/movies with industrial robots in them they are usually moving at a slow speed, so you can actually see what they are and what they are doing. I would not be difficult, at least not on the one's I was trained on, to hit a higher speed than "test" by accident and have your head removed violently. The first time I saw one working at full tilt it blew my mind...........and I didn't want to get back in the work "cell" with that monster. Hit full speed by accident while you are programming the thing and death is a likely result.

This is why you ALWAYS follow "lock out tag out" procedures when working with dangerous equipment and make sure it is de-energized before working on or near these things. The German OSHA is going to be all over this place for the next five years. Someone dropped the ball and the fucking thing landed on this poor kid, or he simply weeded himself out of the gene pool. Still, shop procedures are written to prevent this sort of thing, so someone screwed up on their training.

This story is the reason why most countries will not permit robot trucks on public roads, or any sort of (non-military) robot plane carrying passengers.

The remaining countries will allow them up to the first fatal accident, and then they will be banned.

Nevertheless, the thing needs to be dismantled, and the parts melted down, for its crime.

They should also show plant video of the crime, and the smelting event to ALL other robots, making it clear, 'Dis gwanna hapin to YO too...'

I see four possibilities:

The machine malfunctioned

The guy at the controls hit something by accident

The guy at the controls hit something on purpose, probably for a joke, and killed him by accident

The guy at the controls wanted to hurt him, but things went all the way.

My guess is number three, the equivalent of playing with a loaded weapon.

The banksters probably have secret chips in robots programmed to kill us all upon command. Maybe not yet, but that is likely our future. We need to start making our own robots - I'm going to go watch the Terminator movie this afternoon. Sometimes they get cute and telegraph their intentions through movies.

I wonder if it was something he said , cracked a joke about dumb robot.

Now robots are even opera singers replacing unemployed artists:

http://phys.org/news/2015-07-autonomous-robot-myon-berlin-opera.html

I wonder if this actor robot has milder temper than his colleague that brutally killed a worker at German plant. But do not worry it was human error.

I like this art of killing with impunity. Since robots cannot make human errors, they make their deadly own.

I guess those fanatics supporting autonomous Google Robotic cars are happy since these robots will never make mistake killing them, they will be right to do that.

Probably an issue with metric versus English conversions.

Better to spend a $Billion dollars and fix the Hubble Telescope up in space, then

to spend a few million dollars on the ground just to be sure the optics are working...

Or, the Mars lander that crashed because the contractor screwed up the conversion...

Stick with English measurements and you can't go wrong.

English measurement is based on human life experience (i.e. the width of a horse carriage),

whilst Metric is simply based on scientific measurements, like the speed of light.

Hence why no one "gets" metric measurements (they don't relate to anything in life).

Metric sucks.

The whole world uses metric but you shitheads always want to be different and expect the whole to change YOUR way.

not going to happen, dipshit.  EVER

Well there you are!

I don't see you on posts regarding financial news or political events that take any degree of critical thinking skills, just the bullshit articles like this one...that happened in Germany...in Europe....just like the Netherlands. You obviously connect the dots in your blurred vision to make this poor German kid's death into an America bashing event.

But hey, anything to bash Americans, right?

Go crawl back into your bong you useless geezer.

All federal and state agencies converted to metric system in late 1980-ties. All state engineering work was done in meters until late 2000 when corporate oligarchs reversed it allowing for USFT on public projects.

Two reasons why AI will never rule the world (and why AI will never truly exist):

1)  iPhone 6 sucks at voice recog:  I tell it "Call Home", and it responds with "Playing songs by AC/DC".

2) Computers will never achieve true "sideways" thinking.  A man just "knows" that 2+2 = 4, whilst a computer must ALWAYS convert each 2 into binary (Base 2), add the binary values, and then convert the answer back to decimal (Base 10).

Oh, and Man is too arrogant in its ability to program:

GM vehicles that auto-unlock doors when put into park and get DEA personnel killed for doing so.

GM vehicles that turn on your reverse lights when exiting your car, I guess for extra light at night, so that kids will grow up learning that vehicles AREN'T in Reverse, and hence, ignore the backup lights, and hence eventually get run over.

Technology is great when it works, and sucks when it doesn't (like right now, when it pops up and says ZH isn't responding due to a long running script).

I actually applied for a fairly decent paying _Intermediate Robotics Technician_ job today. I'll get $32. to start plus benefits if I land the job. Moreover, the technicians must have neglected to adhere to Safety protocols for working in the programmed path of the computerized numerically controlled [CNC] robotics. The Ministry of Labour will press charges against the company for the industrial accidental death when they examine the facts surrounding the fatality.
