Why Is the American Dream Dead In The South?

The top 1 percent aren't killing the American Dream. Something else is—if you live in the wrong place.
Here's what we know. The rich are getting richer, but according to a blockbuster new study that hasn't made it harder for the poor to become rich. The good news is that people at the bottom are just as likely to move up the income ladder today as they were 50 years ago. But the bad news is that people at the bottom are just as likely to move up the income ladder today as they were 50 years ago.
We like to tell ourselves that America is the land of opportunity, but the reality doesn't match the rhetoric—and hasn't for awhile. We actually have less social mobility than countries like Denmark. And that's more of a problem the more inequality there is. Think about it like this: Moving up matters more when there's a bigger gap between the rich and poor. So even though mobility hasn't gotten worse lately, it has worse consequences today because inequality is worse.
But it's a little deceiving to talk about "our" mobility rate. There isn't one or two or even three Americas. There are hundreds. The research team of Raj Chetty, Nathaniel Herndon, Patrick Kline, and Emmanuel Saez looked at each "commuting zone" (CZ) within the U.S., and found that the American Dream is still alive in some parts of the country. Kids born into the bottom 20 percent of households, for example, have a 12.9 percent chance of reaching the top 20 percent if they live in San Jose. That's about as high as it is in the highest mobility countries. But kids born in Charlotte only have a 4.4 percent chance of moving from the bottom to the top 20 percent. That's worse than any developed country we have numbers for.
You can see what my colleague Derek Thompson calls the geography of the American Dream in the map below. It shows where kids have the best and worst chances of moving up from the bottom to the top quintile—and that the South looks more like a banana republic. (Note: darker colors mean there is less mobility, and lighter colors mean that there's more).
So what makes northern California different from North Carolina? Well, we don't know for sure, but we do know what doesn't. The researchers found that local tax and spending decisions explain some, but not too much, of this regional mobility gap. Neither does local school quality, at least judged by class size. Local area colleges and tuition were also non-factors. And so were local labor markets, including their share of manufacturing jobs and those facing cheap, foreign competition. But here's what we know does matter. Just how much isn't clear.
1. Race. The researchers found that the larger the black population, the lower the upward mobility. But this isn't actually a black-white issue. It's a rich-poor one. Low-income whites who live in areas with more black people also have a harder time moving up the income ladder. In other words, it's something about the places that black people live that hurts mobility.
2. Segregation. Something like the poor being isolated—isolated from good jobs and good schools. See, the more black people a place has, the more divided it tends to be along racial and economic lines. The more divided it is, the more sprawl there is. And the more sprawl there is, the less higher-income people are willing to invest in things like public transit.
That leaves the poor in the ghetto, with no way out for their American Dreams. They're stuck with bad schools, bad jobs, and bad commutes if they do manage to find better work. So it should be no surprise that the researchers found that racial segregation, income segregation, and sprawl are all strongly negatively correlated with upward mobility. But what might surprise is that it doesn't matter whether the rich cut themselves off from everybody else. What matters is whether the middle class cut themselves off from the poor.
3. Social Capital. Living around the middle class doesn't just bring better jobs and schools (which help, but probably aren't enough). It brings better institutions too. Things like religious groups, civic groups, and any other kind of group that keeps people from bowling alone. All of these are strongly correlated with more mobility—which is why Utah, with its vast Mormon safety net and services, is one of the best places to be born poor.
4. Inequality. The 1 percent are different from you and me—they have so much more money that they live in a different world. It's a world of $40,000 a year preschool, "nanny consultants," and an endless supply of private tutors. It keeps the children of the super-rich from falling too far, but it doesn't keep the poor from rising (at least into the top quintile). There just wasn't any correlation between the rise and rise of the 1 percent and upward mobility. In other words, it doesn't hurt your chances of making it into the top 80 to 99 percent if the super-rich get even richer.
But inequality does matter within the bottom 99 percent. The bigger the gap between the poor and the merely rich (as opposed to the super-rich), the less mobility there is. It makes intuitive sense: it's easier to jump from the bottom near the top if you don't have to jump as far. The top 1 percent are just so high now that it doesn't matter how much higher they go; almost nobody can reach them.
5. Family Structure. Forget race, forget jobs, forget schools, forget churches, forget neighborhoods, and forget the top 1—or maybe 10—percent. Nothing matters more for moving up than who raises you. Or, in econospeak, nothing correlates with upward mobility more than the number of single parents, divorcees, and married couples. The cliché is true: Kids do best in stable, two-parent homes.
It's not clear what, if any, policy lessons we should take from this truism. As my colleague Jordan Weissmann points out, we don't really have any idea how to promote marriage. We can try telling people how great it is to get hitched. We can even get rid of the marriage penalties some low-income couples face. But these won't, and haven't, been making more people exchange till-death-do-us-parts. And should we even want to? Steve Waldman points out that poor women know better than upper-middle-class people yelling at them to get married whether they should or not. They know whether their boyfriend would make a good husband, a good father, a good teacher. And they know that marriage is important. That they're not getting married tells us something. Sometimes no match is better than a bad match.

Flat mobility is the defining Rorschach test of our time. Conservatives look at it, and say, see, we shouldn't worry about the top 1 percent, because they're not making the American Dream any harder to achieve. But liberals look at it, and say see, we should care about inequality, because it can make the American Dream harder to achieve—and it raises the stakes if you don't. But both want to increase upward mobility. It's not enough to keep it where it was 50 years ago. We need to actually become the land of opportunity.
The American Dream is alive in Denmark and Finland and Sweden. And in San Jose and Salt Lake City and Pittsburgh. But it's dead in Atlanta and Raleigh and Charlotte. And in Indianapolis and Detroit and Jacksonville. Fixing that isn't just about redistribution. It's about building denser cities, so the poor aren't so segregated. About good schools that you don't have to live in the right (and expensive) neighborhood to attend. And about ending a destructive drug war that imprisons and blights the job prospects of far too many non-violent offenders—further shrinking the pool of "marriageable" men.
Because the American Dream is dead in too much of America.

Before I was halfway thru the article I knew race was the important distiction. How can businesss flourish when the people are mainly interested in crime and killing each other? The people make the ghettos. Not the other way around.

Sadly, this is probably the basic reason. We have a culture that promotes mindless narcissism (who ever heard of a 'selfie' 50 years ago and who cared?) You HATED the neighbor that invoted you over for endless slides taken on their vacaion but now that's tolerable whe it's on the Internet for MORE people not to want to see? I suspect this 'look at me' social media is driven more by people looking at others and going 'What a schmuck' so they can feel better about their own pitiful lives - oblivious that THEY look like some pitiful schmuck to others. Social media is schadenfreude taken to the ultimate degree and little else (except a self-reporting tool for government surveillance). My pitiful life may be shit but look at Lindsay Lohan - what a trainwreck!
'Culture' now focuses on 'celebrities' whose only 'assets' are a big ass (Kim K makes it all too clear that 'Idiocracy' was prescient and all too accurate) and little else. We have a society where kids think being a porn star is a good 'career' choice and where poor kids think they have a better shot at escaping poverty by becoming a rapper or getting to the NBA - instead of getting a college degree in engineering or becoming a doctor. Meanwhile the children of rich parents simply want to get richer and lack moral or ethical compass.
We have a society that HATES 'elitism' (e.g. ANYONE smarter than you are - when the average person is pretty damn dumb) and mocks real knowledge and accomplishment. People so utterly ignorant of math and statistics think spending 1/4 of their take home earnings gives them a real shot at winning the lottery. This may be why Congress is made up of unsuccessful attorneys and woefully lacking in engineers, accountants and scientists.
People are, frankly, dumb, willfully uninformed and spoiled - wanting everything for nothing, without working at all for anything. Instead of welcoming OPPORTUNITY to work hard and do better people now DEMAND a 'better' life as a 'right'.
There is this astounding sense of entitlement that is strongest among those that have the least and those that have the most (where neither have personally earned ANYTHING). Look at inherited wealth in this country and their attitudes - and the attitudes of those that have nothing and are living off government assistance for the 3rd generation. Both groups think they DESERVE more than they already have - which they got for nothing. Meanwhile those that have worked hard for a living so their kids could get a college education and do better than they did have seen their jobs disappear - sent to ssome low wage country overseas in pursuit of 'free trade' while their kids have found college to be a debt laden illusion.
I saw a person who made the Forbes 400 list get there coming from literally nothing. He believed in rewarding those who worked for him and believed you made more by helping others make money WITH you. He ALWAYS 'left money on the table' and never went for the last cent in a deal. Those that inherited his business are presiding over its demise - and while selling out and walking away with millions (on top of the hundreds of millions they already made) could cre less about those working for them. If they split 10% of the proceeds (which they could well afford) among the staff thatn mad ethem that fortune they'd be hailed and acclaimed. But those that INHERITED all they have only want as much as they can get - the hell with everyone else. The founder would be horrified that they are selling out and horrified that his employees were being treated so shabbily.
I also worked for some time on the South Bronx - for one of its largest employers, now long gone. The older workers took pride in their work and worked hard for not always the best wages. You had single mothers in their 40's and 50's that had worked hard to put kids through parochial schools, not trusting the public ones - yet their kids could at best look forward to the military if even that. Those in their 20's were more likely to simply go collect pubic assistance. The younger workers coming in were - frankly - lazy and wanted 'more' without ever showing even the most basic skills or work ethic.
I'm now seeing my own kid's contemporaries that WANT to work but finding little in the way of opportunity. These are motivated and accomplished kids who have a better shot than most (connections DO count) but the world has changed. I also see others of that generation that are scarily spoiled thinking college means a guaranteed place at the table of life - good luck with that philosophy degree - while living the most self-absorbed life you can imagine. WTF? There is this astounding dichotomy with some who DO work hard and do remarkable things with others who are squandering the opportunities they do have while living the most shallow narcicistic life imaginable. Yet the latter is what our culture promotes..... go buy $500 shoes and the latest iPhone and .......
I agree with you. I always find it interesting when a younger person is complaining about not being rich, but when I ask them how much time they spend per week studying the financial system and how it works I get a bewildered look. They are willing to waste 30 hours a week on video games but not one hour on how criminals have setup the banking system. They are unable to answer basic questions on how the FED works. Add this lack of knowledge to their lack of a strong work ethic and you have the free shit army. I do not believe we got to this point by accident, it is all by design. I personally am happy that the majority of people are idiots, I make lots of money off of fools.

the racial mix does affect the south, here is my theory. after johnsons great society kicked into high gear. birthing out of wedlock babies paid more money, so you get huge increases. newsflash, poor white trash learned from the first group and used the same methods, they even began to mix. so you have a demographic of poor white trash, mixed, and illegal immigrants and blacks all living in these areas. all intermixing, all fsa, for generations. they inundate the schools and make them into jokes. they suck up every resource with no contribution, they set examples to their children grand children and other people that once were productive citizens that contributed to the community that it is much easier to not get married, not contribute, and collect the max amount from federal,state,local fs. in the area where i live most of the new bmw's, mercedes, cadillacs etc. all live in the huge section 8 housing complex, whose street i pass on the way back and forth to work every day. they don't have to buy food, they don't have to pay rent. they foster their kids out to grand-ma and double collect, etc. etc. their healthcare is all taken care of and schools and organizations cater to them. having pre-pre school, breakfast programs, in school child care, 20 years ago i had a family membership at the ymca. my children couldn't keep a group of unsupervised kids from grabbing their towels, snorkels and flippers, etc. i ask the desk who they were and why they were unsupervised, and of course they were part of a local charity program that paid for them to be there, but the supervisor was out sick that day or some sort of bs. i cancelled my membership. the small town i grew up in down in south carolina is a complete ghost town, no industry, the swap shops and junk furniture stores all have signs in spanish and nobody that has a choice would choose to live there.

With the wholesale destruction of jobs in this country you can view government assistance (in its varied forms - including SS disability) as the modern day 'bread' - accompanied by a plethora of 'circuses' that keep the otherwise starving masses from rioting in the streets. We went from having the Treasury Department in charge of the currency to giving bankers the ability to create money out of thin air, and then in their magnimity lend it into circulation, while expecting nothing less than full repayment AND interest. Right there, on the face of it, is an equation guaranteed to impoverish nearly everyone eventually. A financial system that is nothing less than an endless treadmill designed to grind most of us under, while making a few fantastically rich.

Even though the states tend to lean conservative still, the large cities, bar none, are bastions of NE Liberal Elite. And so now we know why the elites attack the traditional family, organized religion, charter schools, the Boy scouts and anything else that strengthens the individual and the family unit. I think what Vampy was trying to say, and I don't want to speak for him/her, is that it is doubtful that a gay couple will be a model for successfully raising a normal kid. Sooner or later the kid is going to figure out that ole "dad" or whatever they call their father figure is jamming his dick up the ass of "mom" (or whatever they call the mother figure) and then sucking off "mom" so that he gets some enjoyment as well. Now, do you really think that this kid is going to be able to process that reality without being completely fucked up both sexually and/or socially? Just because we are being inundated with propaganda to accept this perversity doesn't mean it's normal OR something we should expose young children to.

However, a young child is not a consenting adult. This constant barrage of propaganda to insist that young children understand and accept this sex practice as normal is completely fucked up. I don't really think my daughter needs to read "sally has two moms" in 3rd grade or have any sexually related subject matter exposure at that age. Also, I don't think that gays should have extra privileges and/or be considered some sort of endangered species with regard to laws that society lives by. I'm sure this all sounds quite bizarre and homophobic to the average reader who has spent the last 10 years being convinced by the TV and magazines that gays can provide as loving a home as a traditional couple of man/woman and that their sexual practices are quite normal and should be accepted by society. No, I don't accept them, it's just none of my frickin business, that's the difference.
That doesn't mean that most traditional marriages aren't in some way disfunctional, that is a human condition that we will never overcome. But starting off with the idea that we should expose young children to deviant sexual practices and expect they would turn out unaffected seems to be pretty stupid. Hell, expose children to violence in the home every day and see how they turn out. It's the same concept.
Actually gay couples can be very effective parents. I watched two females with a 25+ year committed relationship raise an adopted chinese girl from infancy to now being very successful in college and in life. Stable and two parent are the key factors. I have also seen more than a few non-stable heterosexual couples mess up their kids. Fortunately kids are resilient, and most survive bad parenting. But it is a major handicap.
Single mother homes with kids raised with no constant (as in one) father are fukt.
My uneducated eye tends to see a correlation with low population density and more conservative values in flyover country. Furthermore, some of the oddball counties in those areas are because of Indian reservations and occasionally, metro areas.

Actually it may be more of a cultural issue in that the southern 'plantation economy' fostered DEPENDENCE - same issue in the counties with large Indian Reservations and those with large southern populations that moved north for factory jobs.
You have a large impoverished population that was KEPT THAT WAY DELIBERATELY for generations - black white and red.
You have people that went from slavery to sharecropping (and maybe to factories) where they did as they were told and were taken care of. If you're a black sharecropper you keep your mouth shut even when you're being cheated because you don't have any other options - no other place to go or work. Speak up and you get lynched. You did what you were told to do and were 'taken care of' - albeit at a subsiustence level. Now government is the one 'taking care of them'. Any initiative or ambition was bred out a LONG time ago. Same with Native Americans - they had the crap beat out of them. The ones that fought back all got killed. Who's left? You learn to do what you're told if you want to survive. You had few oportunities for advancement in those geographic areas - you were a slave, sharecropper or peoperty owner... not much else...... and if you were from generations that scraped by dependent on the property owner, you never even thought there was another option - because there rarely was (you had to get FAR away to escape this).
There's also a clear and proven relationship with violence levels and the South - the whole culture of 'respect' that's readily insulted and quick to violence (duels among the 'elites' and knife fights among the poor). The whole 'disrespect' thing goes back to Southern mores and the upper class obsession with proper respect. You demanded proper respect from yor inferiors - and could enforce your will with impunit but with your 'equals' you fought 'duels' over 'honor'. A mindless system that makes commerce difficult but when you live on a self-sufficent plantation you don't HAVE to deal with others. In the more commerce dependent North you can't go around killing people over perceivced insults when you have to do business with them on a regular basis. The poor in the South emulated theiur 'betters' and were even MORE prone to violence over perceived insults. Face it - when you have nothing to your name BUT your name and nothign to lose, you're more inclined to fight over 'honor' (or a rather distorted sense of it).
Contrast that with the immigrant 'come to America, work hard and do better' mentality......... Working to dig the Erie Canall or build railroads wasn't a bad deal compared to starving back in Ireland in the early 1800's . If you were starving back in Sweden, Wisconsin was a pretty damn good place in 1890. If you were Sicilian or Polish in 1920, the US was heaven compared to back in Europe. And for immigrants - likely to be killed back home for standing up and fighting - working hard and prospering made more sense than fighting over being insulted (and any immigrant snt any time was more than likely to get a load of insults from the 'natives').
It is NOT simply a 'black' issue in ANY way. You can see the difference in native born African Americans and those that immigrated here from the Carribean in the last few decades. You have Jamicans and others working their tails off to get ahead (seeing wonderful opportunities here compared to 'back home' and denigrating native American blacks for being lazy and complaining so much....)

The biggest factor is culture. People who are brought up to believe that work is for suckers and that they are entitled to food and shelter will never move up. This culture is huge in the black community and in many whites as well. Exposure to the culture of dependence will stunt a child's work ethic for life.
The second big factor is the cartelization of the economy by government regulations and taxes. It is virtually impossible for a poor person to start a "legitimate" business due to all the fees, taxes, record-keeping requirements, and regulations. As a real life example, I made money for years fixing computers and setting up networks and web sites for small businesses, but I worked for cash only and only for people who knew about me through word of mouth. If I had tried to start an actual business I would have never been able to make a profit due to not only the taxes but all the bullshit paperwork that business owners have to deal with. Entrepreneurship is the best way to rise from poverty to a middle-class lifestyle, but it is impossible due to the fiat money system and government interference in the economy. There are millions of small business people who make ends meet working under the table, but they can not expand until the market is set free of all the cartels created by regulation.

I was born in the bottom quintile and now, not yet 50 years old, I'm right at the edge of the top quintile. For me it's a bit of a fluke. My parents shouldn't have been in the bottom quintile. Alcoholism and terrible decision-making will do that if you have advantages of background and education, which my parents had. So us kids were educated, had living examples of success in our family (just not our parents), and we knew what we should expect of ourselves and society, and how to succeed in our society. As poor kids growing up, people noticed something different about our family. Since we lived in a rural area, people considered us to be putting on airs and thinking we were too good for our situation. That, apparently, was a bad thing. Since my parents didn't have any money, I was supposed to walk around not making eye-contact with people, not speaking clearly and with confidence, certainly not reading books and being good at school.
As it turns out, of the 8 of us kids who grew up on welfare, I'm the least-educated. I never got a B.A. The rest all have at minimum a Masters, and there are 2 PhD's, a lawyer and a veterinarian in the group. I make the third most money; the lawyer makes the most and then the vet. The rest of the family is in education, so they don't make squat. But they are a little above the median household income and their kids are growing up a lot more comfortably and securely than we did.
The lack of social mobility in America today has to do with culture. It's access to education, the living examples in one's life of how to take advantage of opportunities, and most of all, the sense of expectation from one's self and from society. If you don't know you don't have to take a bunch of shit, you'll take a bunch of shit. I was taught if I was down to my last $20 (now maybe $100), make sure I had a clean shirt and tie, get my shoes shined, and get a decent haircut. Then go get a job. Don't "look for" a job; get a job. And I saw people in my family doing it. If you don't have those things, you aren't going to do better than your parents did. It's worse in the South because the anti-intellectualism that is rampant in America runs deeper in the South. It also never gets cold there, so people don't have to work together so much for mere survival, leading to weaker social structures and resistance to social cohesion.
It isn't much to do with race. Race correlates with class in America. Correlation is not causation, but it isn't coincidence either.
There are clues throughout your message as to why you and your brothers/sisters are successful. I see them.
Then how come black kids raised in upper-class households do no better in college than ghetto blacks? Check out some trans-racial adoption studies, the results will surprise you.

Everyone's number one goal in life should be to make as much money as you can so you can move as far away from the fucking niggers as you can. This is true even if you're black.
The beauty of this lying with numbers is when you invert them. So if 12.9% of the bottom 20 per cent can jump up to the top 20 per cent -- then that must mean that 12.9% of the top 20 per cent must FALL OUT of the top 20 per cent -- so maybe those wonderful places are not so wonderful after all of the top 20 per cent cannot maintain their wealth/income.
This whole premise of quantifying rankings by per cent is fruitless anyway. A 'bottom 20 per cent' in Palo Alto might be $60,000 per year and a pretty nice life style. The bottom 20 per cent in rural Mississippi might be a shack with an outhouse.
The only real way to detect upward mobility is to look at regions that have wage growth - and that wage growth is across the board. Thus the bottom 20 per cent may stay at the bottom but they have upward mobility if their incomes are rising 5 per cent a year. So what if everyone else is rising 5 % too.
Simple correlations do not imply causation. While the geography may reveal constraints to upward mobility, this discussion is completely bereft of the machinations of the Central Bank that is directly causing the "gap" to widen in the first place. Perpetual inflation and the Cantillon effect, promises that if you get it first, then spend it first, then you spend it best. ZIRP has eviscerated the middle class. Mobility disparities that might exist across the country are temporary (perhaps in years), but, still temporary and are a product of resource disparities, capital mobility, and other advantages some regions have over others - including disparities of economic freedom between jurisdictions. I think eventually - and perhaps quickly - these disparities will equal out to the lowest common denominator too. Unless and until monetary policy is normalized, one should expect the inequality gap to widen, and upward mobility all but disappear.

I recently moved to Queen City from Northern Virginia to escape the rat race and this place is the land of milk & honey by comparison to the NoVA area as well as New England. Taxes back north coupled with the cost of living made it impossible to get ahead. The barriers to entry that local & state governments created made pursuing professions an impossible affair without racking up a lifetime of student debt. This area is growing and its like all the folks from New York and Pennsylavina are moving here...use Google Earth to check out the houses along Lake Norman and Brawley School Road in Mooresville. Plenty of wealth is Charlotte and more is being made every day if you are willing to work for it.

Putting the carriage before the horse, as always. If you're black, you most likely have an IQ near 85 and are therefore useless in a high technology modern civilization. You will most likely live in the ghetto, mooch off welfare and sell crack because it's a lot easier than flipping burgers or cleaning toilets, which are the only jobs you are qualified for. I have all the respect in the world for a negro that works for a living, I used to clean toilets.

I lived in the greater NY area and worked in NYC. Female engineer. I made 6 figues up there. I live in the Deep South now. The article is DEAD WRONG. The only measure in which the "rich" non-south excells is in TAXABLE income. My quality of life is better in the South and I have more disposable income on a MUCH lower salary. Cost of living is cheaper: power is less, real estate is way less, taxes are insanely less. You cannot tax the work of a stay-at-home mom, so a Bible belt family may only have one income, and by that standard they are poor? Or people grow a lot of their own food and live more simply and are happy - and that makes them "poor"? Send The Atlantic packing; they have no clue what's going on.
Engineers are roundly valued in our economy if you get the experience you need in the first 4 years or so.
True, it is like you might as well not go to work in government or private industry without accomplishing something great like an Engineering Degree.
I don't know much about Banking, Law, Economics or International Relations and Defense Policy Degrees... there is a right way to do it to gain the acceptance.

Engineers normally have to be very smart to begin with, Computer Engineers might have had it easier for a while, ... the great thing about Engineers is you worked in High School, you worked to get Engineering Degree, probably did some specialization and then with the Experience... everyone knew you worked hard and had great base to build on.
In business the slog might be longer. You have to communicate often, at the right times, know auditing & Accounting & Finance & Legal... that all can take a normal guy till he is 55-60 years old.
Engineers are stars. They do the actual creative work or the work that sell the plans, proposals, and company reputation.
But I will say there is always a STEM Glut in the USA even without the Immigration VISAs and Off-Shoring of Engineering. We shut down whole industries, those people are still here somewhere, Tech People. Plus those with Doctorate are over qualified for most jobs.
Engineers are in a better postion than many careers, but with H1Bs they are artificially held down.
Everyone blabs about how many do not have the smarts to do engineering. Imagine the motivation for kids to hunker down and study if they see engineers making a real market salary not pressed down by the reduced salaries of 4 Indian guys living in the same 2 BR apt and taking the bus to work.

Yes - high level jobs that produce things are targeted for destruction by outsourcing the jobs to pagan third worlders. All by design. I tell the young guys in my circle to learn how to build things and go build. Tough road because the culture they swim in teaches them to be a W2 drone for the globalists.
I met many H1B Indian and Chinese friends via outsourcing/offshoring. A few are well aware that the current prosperity they enjoy (compared to 10-20 years ago) is entirely manufactured and orchestrated. They are being used to gut the middle class of the west and once their mission is complete they too will be undermined. They know something is wrong but go along with it because they benefit. Human nature wins again.
Most are sadly oblivious to the big picture, like most of the world, and are buying the lie they are in demand because they are somehow smarter, harder working, cheaper, etc. The reality is they are endentured servants. Lies are running the show today so they continue to enjoy their time in the sun.

I think our History Books & history Teachers and ... of course our Economics Professors... have forgotten the Lessons of the 1900s recessions, the Long Depression, and the Great Depression. That is what I think.

Much of the History of the Great Depression doesn't explain why a Country like the USA with Very High Debt, Would Agree to High Lending toward Recovery in Europe, and do it with a very high Tax Rate of the Highest Tax Bracket...

We don't have charts and data at the St. Louis FED back to 1900s or even the Great Depression in most cases.
Perhaps we should require the St. Louis FED to propagate more data and explain more about the Long Depression & Great Depression through data, charts, graphs, tables.
Perhaps our Great State Funded (Federal Funded) Universities should be Required to present Economic Data from the Civil War forward with great detail on the Long Depression, Bank Policy Tightening with regard to Silver Certificates, Gold Certificates, Interest Rates, Lending Activity Increases & Decreases... Foreclosures... Calls for Payoff in Recessions/Depressions/Crisis like Stock Market Collapse... it can't come out looking good.

The imprisonment for consensual Crimes and Private Prison is an abomination under God, under Freedom, Under Sovereignty, and under... Libertad, Igualdad, Fraternidad.
