As noted previously, we are in a new dark age where college does not pay. At $1.3 trillion, the student debt balance is not getting any smaller. Facing a lifetime of debt slavery, the millennial generation is doing whatever they can to avoid homelessness. Whether it's stripping or working at Rent A Gent, all options are on the table. The labor force participation rate for college graduates has been on a relentless downtrend.

In my job, impoverished people will have to supply occupant information to apply for certain subsidies, and I notice a lot of people, especially in say, Pennsylvania, if they don't have a job, they're starting to be "students", I'm not sure it it's just them hoping to get more benefits for what they're applying for with my company, or what, or if some % of student loans have been kind of a "double secret" welfare, a last bit of money for desperate people trying to avoid being homeless by taking out the last kind of loan they might be eligible for.
It's a safe, non-judged way to plug holes in a resume. One of the career counselor types I talked with said the best move after getting laid off is to either create a LLC or get a student ID card. With the LLC, if you're out of work for a couple years you just claim you tried to do a startup and it failed -- there's no stigma to that, and with the student ID, that you were working on a new degree.
Either way, you can plug 2-4 years of unemployment without getting judged as a slacker.
College students are being forced into debt. Two generations ago public funding for higher education was much higher. If public funds could be made available in the 1960s and 1970s, the country is all the more capable of providing them now. Instead tuition and charges at public colleges have gone through the roof. In the early 1980s a state university would typically get 30% of its funds from students. Now tuition and charges typically run to 60-70% of state university budgets.
The reason? To find an outlet for investment money that could not find profitable use elsewhere. Just as in the housing bubble, just as in stock market bubbles. Wall Street doesn't know where to invest all the dough at its disposable? Turn to all kinds of predatory finance, swindling, embezzlement, extortion, whatever. Too big to fail, too big too jail, immunity is easy to get if you've got the dough to buy enough politicians.
And then turn the young women into prostitutes to repay the debt you've forced on them.
Time to roll out the guillotines.

Consider this as well, during the 80's and continuing on everyone I knew had started tax free college saving accounts for their children, most if not all these funds could be tapped by the kids when they went off to school and used for anything including beer pong and gambling debts. Now you don't think administrators saw this coming. And another thing, tuition hikes néed governmental approval so there you go. A fool and his money are soon parted.
Good questions boo, but no one answer. The feedback loop is measured in generations, and it's not as clear cut as some on here make it. Most high earners have a college degree or two. Try learning dentistry or heart surgery in a shop class.
Government at all levels overpays like crazy for degrees, even bogus ones, and kids who have been in school for 16 years, and think they are doing well really don't see alternatives very clearly. College prep was, and is, a world unto itself.
Like all gubbermint, it needs massive cuts, but it's hard to get any conversation going on that in the lame stream media.

I spent a good fifteen years or so my younger life working sales. I was good. I was National Sales leader in pretty much any area I was in. In my days of weekly premium, debit insurance agent I was a member of the President's Club, Million Dollar Round Table (or whatever it was called). I got tired of becoming so damned good at sales that my manager would take over my area. I made a concious decision to get out of sales.
In 88 I took a temp job at a paper mill as a project secretary. The mill was doing a massive, multi-nation, modernization project. I kept looking at replacement parts lists from the contractor and things didn't add up. I made a few phone calls to local machinists and mills and found that they could supply replacement parts at 5% of listed cost. I started building a list.
This is 1988, PC's had jsut come out and were new to business. The most sophisticated thing on them was Lotus 123 and Word Perfect.
I kept looking at the cost of replacement parts. And I taught myself how to program using Lotus and started compiling lists of nearby suppliers vs the listed Contrator costs, Once I got to $5 million in savings I took it to the Project Engineer. Japan reps showed up to talk to me, and I was sent to Atlanta for a three day swanky stay. End result, contactor dropped prices by 90% on those produced locally and 70% on those proprietary. My bonus? Getting laid off.
Sold everything I had in Florida and moved back to California in 1990.
In 93 I got laid off from a position that had me overseeing more than $10 billion in trust funds. I had no college education, my position was one of those "How to Succeed in Business Without Even Trying" type of things. It was really bizarre, I went from a Temp Clerk to a Fund Manager in less than four weeks. Really. This was after i had moved back to California from Florida in 1990.
I'm actually not as stupid aa my comments may lead you to believe. I have a couple of software copyrights. One of which was developed during my "HTSINBWET" times. Me were the Sheet Metal Workers Trust Fund of California, Arizona and Nevada. I was a non-union worker managing the union workers benefits for their health care, pension, retirement and a bunch of other shit. We were the unit that accounted for all the payments made on each individual workers behalf.
I got put into that position when, one day as a temp clerk, I overhear a couple executives talk about losing the SMT over incompetence and tremendous wiat times for benefits. One of them argued that they could show that they were making progress if they only had some means to make a demonstration. My dumb ass piped up, "Um, hey, guys, there's this thing here called Harvard Graphics that can pretty much make any chart you want. What do you want to show?"
They fed me numbers, I fed HG and added 1990's florishes...next thing I knew the account was saved, I got a permanent position, with an asskissing secretary (totally freaked me out, I was about 33 she was about 102), and put in charge of Contribubtion Accounting. All payments for benefits came to my desk in huge 18" x 24" benefit sheets. The guy that had been there the longest was pretty pissed I showed up, he gave me a cursory overview of what was going on, told me to go fuck myself, and quit after three days.
The first year was spent on going over what was described as the process was done. It was tremendously cumbersome, took days to do just one day of reports, and 'my' employees were totally demoralized by being beat up on by the union bosses and the executives of our company. I finally got down and looked into the details of what our actual processes where, insisted on being led through a day of processing at Security Pacific's lockbox operations, followed SP's executive on her daily activity...I went deep.
Then I wrote a bit of software that took all that daily influx of information, reduced it from days to hours, reduced monthly reporting from three month to two hours, made my staff look like superstars with bonuses and raises, took the heat off the Bank VP...and got to the point where ALL funds, national, local and regionall agreed to participate in my little contribution recognition program because it was so much faster than theirs. Our monthly collections expanded from $4m to $16m and it made little difference on the workload.
In the meantime, the union, in it's government pace of making a decision, decided that the delays of 1990 (in spite of the instant recognition now available in 1993) required that they become self administered funds. They asked how much for my software. I asked $30k. They declined and shut us off.
I was offered a tentative position in Lost Wages, but during the phone interview they asked if what degree I had. I said none. They had a requirement that I had to have a degree. So I had to fire everyone over two months, eventually firing myself. (That one almost tops me firing my mom in a whole different section of the company.)
Anyway, 1993, I'm tossed out of a lucrative job that I not only excelled at, but was treated like a roman emporer...BofA was taking over Security Pacific at the time and, apparently, BofA, thought I was important. My wife and I were treated to some big fucking event in LA with caviar, all kinds of food, some asshole "Hi, I'm the president of BofA". My wife and I are essentially hicks, we simply didn't fit in in any manner, and I was uncouth enough to tell the BofA Prez (1993) The Unions detest you, they will change banks the moment the merger is complete. I have no power over that, I'm no one special, I'm just some guy off the street. Wife and I spent a good hour there before we left to go ride the elevators across the street. (I have a fear of man-made heights since the waterspout hit the crane in Panama City.)
Anyway, I got canned in 93 and the only thought in my mind was to get a college degree no matter what it took, no matter what I had to do. I wen to the local CC and physically grabbed a councillor, marched him to his office and told him to sit down and tell me what I had to do to get a degree. Today, I'd still be in prison. Lucky for me, this guy was ex-mil, and was not intimidated by me; he said, first get a transfer contract for all classes taken here to be accepted where you plan to go. I did all possible classes with Commuter U, they signed, and I was set.
Orville Redenbocker pitched in a couple of bucks (I hate popcorn) for an older white guy to get some education. I knuckled down and triple stack my load, getting AA/AS/BS in less than three years, Total (paid off ten years ago) student loan of less than $4k.
Now I'm the corporate controller for fifty entities covering mining, ready mix, steel sales, steel fabircation, concrete recycling, real estate and a couple unassociated ventures.
The cost of college is really how little you take it seriously. I reduced my cost by tripling loads, one load (twelve units) cost x, additional cost nothing (other than expensive books) and the whole experience was reduced from what should have been six years (based on my classes) to 2.5 years. (I took some master level classes). You have to put in your mind that the entire world is out to fuck you while you're in college (and it really is), be pissed and determined to overcome, physically walk your third application for admission through the entire process right up to the fucking cashier and pay your first tuition in cash, then set yourself to maximize your education in the shortest period of time at the lowest possible cost. Steam clean carpets, hang wallpaper, paint houses, muck fucking dairies...put any thought that college is fun out of your mind. It's another job to get you along your way, and you better take it seriously.
Our country is in much worse shape financially than in the 60's and 70's. Haven't you noticed? If the government funding has changed like you said then college costs would only have risen to double when adjusted for inflation not 10-fold in 25 years. You sound like an apologist for academia.
Yeah, it's almost as if the generation in charge picked up where their parents generation left off and ran the country further into the ground. At least their parents' generation deserved the wealth for whipping the Nazis and the foreign Imperialist.
The USA spends 5.4% of GDP on public funding (all gov levels) for education, little different from the 5.5% average for all high income countries and 5.6% for Europe. Yet our students take on much more debt on top of that. The problem is not lack of government funding, the system is getting enough. The problem is the system spends too much, and spends it on moar administrators and moar stadiums and moar diversity counselors and moar everything else but actual learning. The system needs to focus less on being a four-year resort and more on education, and become more cost-efficient.
As the economy takes a nose dive, the one thing I can look forward to is for the EddieBurgerPie eccomic pussy curve to go up.

I don't understand the units on that "top majors" chart at all. For nursing majors, the number is 48.493. For philosophy majors, the number is 34.416. What does that mean???? There are very few philosophy majors, and virtually no female philosophy majors (I know, I was one). One more time I will say this. I married a Russin/Ukrainian girl 16 years ago, and it has been heaven. She is smart, beautiful, way out of my league. I'm not rich, but I do earn pretty well.
