Is This What The First World Cyber War Looks Like: Global Real Time Cyber Attack Map
After a series of cyber failures involving first UAL, then this website, then the NYSE which is still halted, then the WSJ, some have suggested that this could be a concerted cyber attack (perhaps by retaliatory China unhappy its stocks are plunging) focusing on the US. So we decided to look at a real-time cyber attack map courtesy of Norsecorp which provides real time visibility into global cyber attacks.
What clearly stands out is that for some reason Chinese DDOS attacks/hackers seem to be focusing on St. Louis this morning.
Whether this is related to the series of suspicious cyber failures today, is so far unclear, although if there is a connection at least there is a way to keep track of the first global cyberwar in real-time.

St. Louis is the major fiber optic hub and terminal for North America. It connects all east-west coast major systems and Canada as well. People don't realize that this is also a major terminal hub for the worldwide "cloud". That's why this specfic outage effects Europe, North America, and even Iceland.

One of his all time classics. Harlen is sort of the Beat Generation's Sci-Fi author. In my personal opionion, a mishmash of Alan Ginsburg and George Carlin.
He used to sit in a cafe in his younger day and write just to post on the window for anyone to read or even take down and walk away with. And then he write something else and post it on the window again.
Harlen also sued James Cameron for ripping off ideas from two episodes of the Outer Limit "Soldier" and "The Demon with the Glass Hand" that Ellison wrote when Cameron made "The Terminator". Ellison also wrote one of the best episodes of the original Star Trek....."City on the Edge of Forever". Although Gene Roddenberry heavily rewrote it taking out a subplot of drug dealing on the Enterprise, it is still considered by many to be amongst the best episodes of the original series.

Nah, the "attack" looks like it is coming from China, so certainly the attack is coming from China.

No big difference to every other day. A lot of attacks seem to come out of China every day, if you only look at the surface as Norse do. There are a lot of insecure PCs there.
If you dig one level down, most attacks seem to come from the US, with Europe as the second place.
Problem is that it is so easy to hide the true origin of an attack on the internet. There is no limit to the number of proxies you can chain to hide your origin as an attacker. So there is no limit as to how deep you have to dig to find the true attacker.
But let us just blame China, as it looks like the attacks come from there. Surely they know nothing about how to hide. And if any other attacker wants to blame China they would not be so devious they use the many insecure PCs there to make it look like the attack was done by the Chinese.

Nothing to fear Citizens - Facebook and Twitter are still operational.
Attacks shown on Norse are not real. They attacks on Honeypots - think of them like a baited trap.
This is why St Louis is shown as the attack target in the US. St Louis is Norse's HQ.
But while the attacks are not real, the attackers are.
Is it safe to conclude that the NYSE, WSJ, ZH, and UAL are being targeted from China based on the Norse map? Not 100% for two reasons:
1) A smart attacker will use someone else's system to mount the attack by first hacking their system.
2) We can't say whether the same attackers attacking Norse's honeypots are the ones attacking other US Sites...but logic would make it seem likely.
