Is This What The First World Cyber War Looks Like: Global Real Time Cyber Attack Map
After a series of cyber failures involving first UAL, then this website, then the NYSE which is still halted, then the WSJ, some have suggested that this could be a concerted cyber attack (perhaps by retaliatory China unhappy its stocks are plunging) focusing on the US. So we decided to look at a real-time cyber attack map courtesy of Norsecorp which provides real time visibility into global cyber attacks.
What clearly stands out is that for some reason Chinese DDOS attacks/hackers seem to be focusing on St. Louis this morning.
Whether this is related to the series of suspicious cyber failures today, is so far unclear, although if there is a connection at least there is a way to keep track of the first global cyberwar in real-time.

St. Louis is the major fiber optic hub and terminal for North America. It connects all east-west coast major systems and Canada as well. People don't realize that this is also a major terminal hub for the worldwide "cloud". That's why this specfic outage effects Europe, North America, and even Iceland.

Makes sense. Although the 'live' map looks alarming, that's an incredibly small amount and frequency of attacks. A single corp network, maybe. The whole world? Er... hardly. You would need something like NANEX to see the fun on that scale at that frequency.

This is crap. It must be just what norse is monitoring since there are scans or "attacks" on nearly every peice of web attached equipment all day long every day from all over the world. China is only a small portion of it. I've been doing IT for 20 years and this is not even remotely representative of what's happening. Notice the almost complete lack of hacks leaving our country to other places and what are they defining as a hack? It can mean almost anything. If you watch the screen, most of Russia's attacks are coming from within Russia. It is helpful to use the pause button as you see them scroll by.
Keep in mind that Norse's site does not show all attacks world wide. It only shows attacks that strike their traps - honeypots, or sites they've instrumented.
The Norse web site is not really an accurate display of real time events. Certain countries, like China for instance, are not going to show up as targets due to their own controls over the internet

These "Darkwatch", "attack intelligence" number gnomes are based in St. Louis Missouri. Ergo, I don't trust them as far as I could kick 'em.
The attacks you see are not real.
But the attackers are.
The reason you see them in St Louis, is because that is the location of one of Norse' "HoneyPots"- ergo a site placed specifically for the purpose of being an attractive attack target.
Norse's site does not purport to show all attacks...meaning that if your site had an IT profile similar to Norse's in St Louis... you would be suffering attacks similar to the ones they are showing.
That doesn't mean you'd see your site being attacked on Norse's map. They can only monitor their 'trap'...the honeypot...
St Louis is the biggest bandwidth backbone hub for this country. So it looks like it is all coming into St. Louis. However, the real locations are unknown once it gets there. That is why attacks look to be targeting, St. Louis, Seattle, and Pittsburgh.
What I am wondering though is why the attackers are Chinese banks and where the final destination of those attacks is going?
St Louis and the other targets shown are the places where Norse has sensors.
Norse can only show an attack against one of the sites they've instrumented, or one that they've set up for the purpose of being attacked.

I find it interesting how quickly the people are calling Norse's information a dishonest attack on China... I don't think Norse's site or display implicate the Chinese government in any way.
It could simply be a case of more people=more attackers. But the existence of the attackers, and the direction of their attacks are not theorectical. They are real-time. You are seeing it for yourself.
Why?
You need to understand that most internet attacks are automated, and don't have a live hacker on the other end "War Games" style trying to guess the password for entry.
Instead they use an exploit or exploit kit, to gain some control over a third party system, and then will program that system to search for, and attack targets meeting a profile they specify.
So Norse's map does not show Chinese government sponsorship of attacks. It might not even show Chinese people being behind attacks, though the volume would suggest otherwise.
What it shows is attacks that come from Chinese IP addresses and other nation's IP addresses.
It is up to you to decide under whose command the attacks are occuring.
A lot of commenters at 0-hedge slammed the chinks pretty hard. Could be why 0-hedge is under attack.
The recent Windows "security patches" are KNOWN to contain adware and only God, Himself, knows what else. The proof is the new "get Windows 10 now" icon/message that appears now. No security issue there; only it is packaged and delivered as a security patch and is, in reality adware. I believe there is a simpler explanation for St. Louis, which is the Administrative Offices of Norsecorp. I believe Norsecorp recently moved their headquarters to California which used to be at the St. Louis office where the company was founded. It is likely that Norsecorp HONEYPOTS are located in St. Louis and encourage cyber attacks for intelligence gathering purposes. Keep in mind these folks sell SECURITY PRODUCTS so having a scary looking cyber attack map is GOOD FOR BUSINESS! Keep in mind this map does not show all attacks in the world, only the sites that Norse has instrumented.
Also keep in mind that these attacks are on 'Honeypots' - basically a trap that is put there explicitly to be an attractive target.
As for the China part...keep in mind it could be as simple as China has the largest number of tech-savy internet users (potential hackers) while the US has the largest number of E-commerce internet sites (potential targets).
Put the two together and you would still get this map...
