How The Media Confuses Americans About The Most Common Ways To Die

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Daniel Drew via,

The Charleston church shooting flooded newsrooms around the world. Did the killer act alone? How much did he really hate black people? Should we burn every Confederate flag in the country? When will another racist strike next? Stay tuned for more! After reading this, one would assume there was an evil Confederate in every town, ready to open fire on every family in America. The reality is much different. The greatest danger to the average American is the cheeseburger they ate for dinner last night.

The best visual example of the state of the media is the recent Jake Gyllenhaal movie Nightcrawler, which documents his character's freelance career as a journalist who records grisly footage of violent crimes and accidents. His boss advises him, "Think of our newscast as a screaming woman running down the street with her throat cut." One quick glance at any major news source today, and one quickly discovers this is not an exaggeration. One study from the American Public Health Association found that some homicides were more newsworthy than others. The best murders for the news involve victims who are female, children, or the elderly. Top locations are in wealthy neighborhoods. Conversely, black and hispanic victims are not as exciting, apparently. A young white woman who is murdered in Beverly Hills will be all over every newsroom in the country, but a black man who got shot up in Compton might make a footnote in the LA Times if he's lucky.

Aside from the grotesque moral issue of masquerading journalists using violent crime as vile entertainment, an even greater tragedy is unfolding: the inability of Americans to properly assess risk in daily life. The pandering to our lower instincts via the tabloid journalism format has left a shocking void of real information and understanding. One popular statistical website, Five Thirty Eight, has provided a refreshing source of analysis in the otherwise mathematically oblivious journalism industry. Yet even Five Thirty Eight occasionally succumbs to a generally irrelevant story selection process with articles about lottery odds and sports instead of focusing more on science, economics, and politics. The average American knows more about LeBron James than the most common ways they could die. This is a failure of the journalism industry.

While you may never see a story about some random fat person dying from heart disease, that is actually the most likely way for an American to die. Second place is cancer. Nothing else even comes close to these two causes. Confederate racists, rogue policemen, terrorists, white thugs, black thugs, car accidents, airplane crashes, earthquakes, tsunamis, heat waves, blizzards, tornadoes, whatever you happen to be afraid of - it doesn't come close to the danger of being fat and dying of heart disease. It's such a huge factor, there's even an investment strategy for it.

If the media wants to continue their daily death tolls, the responsible thing to do would be to discuss how many people died of heart disease at the end of every broadcast. Every day, 1,674 people die from heart disease. That's the equivalent of three 747 airplane crashes every single day. In 2013, 611,105 people died from heart disease, which is more than the 407,000 Americans who died in World War II. Unlike other ways to die, heart disease is preventable 90% of the time. Yet instead of worrying about how to stop being such a fatass, Americans are more concerned about Confederate flags, gun control, police brutality, and ISIS. This is not a commentary on the validity of those issues. It's just a numerical analysis on the fact that Americans are avoiding the elephant in the room - which happens to be themselves.

Here are the numbers from the CDC.

Top Ten Ways To Die

In America, you're more likely to kill yourself than be murdered. Suicide is the tenth most common way to die, and it outnumbers homicides by more than 2 to 1.

Our dinner was fresh pasta with pesto made with basil and garlic from the garden, broiled eggplant with homegrown vegetables and cheese, and sausage made from our home-grown grass-fed beef with tomato sauce from the garden.

Racism against blacks in America is at an all time high, and it has to stop. The white patriarchy has dominated America and oppressed minority groups and women since the founding of this country. I'm ashamed to call myself an American when I look at the despicable privelaged white middle class that happily exploits the third world and enjoys the riches of colonialism. White America's gun-loving culture also sickens me, and is a clear sign of their lack of morals and concern for the safety of their fellow Americans.

I am white, proud and I like being able to own a gun or rifel or shot gun.  Simply because I can.

I always argue that dying from diseases caused by aging like heart disease demontrates a successful society. Hint: You will not live forever.

Theosebes Goodfellow's picture

I have to agree. I thought the #1 cause of death among folks over 65 was old age. What the hell do I know? /rhet

thamnosma's picture

Good points.  Useless article unless one can show an increase over time for premature death from these causes.  We will all die of something.

The homicide suicide rate comparison is also meaningless to me.  One, you make your own choice, the other you don't.  Major difference.

Believe it or not it's not the burger or the cheese that's the problem, it's the bun and the french fries.

when adjusted for traffic accidents (we drive more miles than any other nation) and black on black murder, American life expectancies are the highest in the world.

Bring on those burgers but hold the fries.

I'm gonna need chapter and verse on that second quote.

Must be the Mormon Bible.

I'm an Anglican [Church of England] and we read the King James Bible. Moreover, I don't want to start reading my Bible to find the verse, and chapter, right now. Frankly, you can take my word for the fact that the verse exists as I have written it. I have an excellent memory for stuff I have read in the past.

pods's picture

I think Arnold was quipping about the fact that "gun" was used in a book written a BIT before it was invented.

MoU, Step away from the crackpipe NOW! Maybe you meant "sword" in your self-righteous moment...

I'm anti-Cocaine because it is a neurotoxin. I'm not anti-marijuana though, and perhaps I should smoke a tad less, you might have a point, boattrash.

You may need to shut your cock holster if you believe in books that are plagiarized fables.

Not trying to stomp your nuts...but think man....think.

I agree, I will not procreate, I promise.

apes hit's picture

I think Arnold is subtly pointing out that there were no "guns" when the bible was written so referencing a direct quote here is highly suspect  ; )  .... I think swords were the killer's choice of weapon back then though poison, knives, and bare hands were probably very popular, too.

Malignant Neoplasms

A malignant neoplasm is composed of cells that look less like the normal cell of origin. It has a higher rate of proliferation. It can potentially invade and metastasize. Malignant neoplasms derived from epithelial cells are called carcinomas. Those derived from mesenchymal (connective tissue) cells are called sarcomas. Malignant brain neoplasms and neoplasms of the immune system are special categories with complex nomenclature.

Thus, characteristics of malignant neoplasms include:

  • More rapid increase in size

  • Less differentiation (or lack of differentiation, called anaplasia)

  • Tendency to invade surrounding tissues

  • Ability to metastasize to distant tissues

Cytologic features of malignant neoplasms include:

  • Increased nuclear size (with increased nuclear/cytoplasmic ratio--N/C ratio).

  • Variation in nuclear or cell size (pleomorphism).

  • Lack of differentiation (anaplasia).

  • Increased nuclear DNA content with subsequent dark staining on H and E slides (hyperchromatism).

  • Prominent nucleoli or irregular chomatin distribution within nuclei.

  • Mitoses (especially irregular or bizarre mitoses).

All of these features are "atypical" microscopic findings. Atypia implies a change for the worse from normal.

Spread of Malignant Neoplasms
  • By direct extension (invasion) into surrounding tissues.

  • Through lymph channels to lymph nodes (lymphatic spread)--typical of carcinomas.

  • Via the bloodstream (hematogenous spread)--typical of carcinomas or sarcomas.

  • Within body cavities (seeding)--typical of neoplasms impinging upon body cavities, such as the peritoneal cavity.

Yeah, the bible is full of stories about "guns".  Lots of gun-battles in the bible.  Didn't the Romans have machine guns?  That must be how they conquered so much territory.  But hey, I don't want to question your "excellent memory for things you have read in the past" so you must be correct.

It's been a while since I read the Bible, thanks for the correction.

p.s. I forgot which weapon it was refering to, so shoot me for being off a tad.

Parrotile's picture

The Romans may not have had what we know as a "machine-Gun", but they did invent the Ballista, which, though "human-powered" has a lot of similarities.

So, yes, they DID have their "version" of a machine-gun in Biblical times, though maybe not quite as we would recognise it :-)

Unless you're being sarcastic (like MDB is), it most certainly does NOT say anything about "Guns" in the Bible.  Especially since they didn't exist back then.  It says (quoting Jesus) "He who lives by the sword, dies by the sword".  And I haven't read it in decades.

His point was:  You die as you live.  But, Jesus failed to mention that...  "Sheep and Sheeple do NOT die the way they live"[1]

Most people in history died by violence (swords, spears, arrows, knives, axes, Torture and Crucifixion... guns, cannon, bombs, grenades, drones, etc), even though they were not Combatants/Warriors but were ordinary People minding their own business of farm, or who simply dissented or objected to TPTB of their day.  Going a step further...

Far, FAR more people died and still die because of the many invisible, nasty and monstrously large Army that Jesus's "Father" himself created: Bacteria, Viruses, Fungi/Mold, Parasites, disease-carrying insects (on infested rodents or on wing).  Their biomass (by tonnage) FAR exceeds that of humans or even mammals, and their sheer numbers exceed it by Orders of Magnitude.  Too bad Jesus sucked at Science.  Somebody from Upstairs should've given him some Remedial Tutoring in his youth or his 40 days in the wilderness, that seemed to transform him to from a Tecton (worker), to an Activist.

[1] If you think about it, Sheep get 'saved' from the Wolf (who's just killing to survive, just as the Shepherd is), so that the Shepherd can eat it instead.  Or -- and this is where it gets really 'rich' -- the Shepherd sells it to some Shaman (Priest), so that he can kill it as a burnt offering to some GITS (Guy In The Sky), and maintain his self-proclaimed status as "The ONLY Middleman between the People and the GITS.People are Sheeple, and they get herded, milked, sheared, fleeced and sacrificed to TPTB.  Nothing new.

I am white, not a racist and never have been.  My dad was an immigrant who paid his dues to become a citizen.  My mom was a first genearation American so my roots in this country don't go back to any point in time where we were slave owners.  I never livd in the south, in fact I grew up in Oakland and remember when my junior high flag football team would get on the bus to leave our games that kidsin the hood would throw rocks (lots of rocks) at our bus (we all ducked as we drove out of the hood).   My high school was equal parts black and white and we had a great vibe; we also had great sports teams.  My sophomore year our JV football team stomped everyone in our league and after one home game a riot was started by fans of the opposing team.  In every instance the racism was not coming from whites, it was directed at whites.  Racism does exist in America, no doubt, but not nearly a level as these shril race baiters want everyone to believe. I think this is merely a stunt to create emotion in the liberal base to get them to turn out an vote in the next elections.  The liberal left has no accomplishments they can stand on but they have many failures, among them:  the greatest wealth divide in the history of our country, high unemployment (even Bernie Sanders says so), higher unemployment for the black population, and I could go on.  The liberal base is apathetic right now and the lefties are trying to rally them with anything they can so they create false narratives and grab their bullhorns.  It won't work beause deep down everyone knows the truth, and the truth that things suck and they suck because of the failures of liberal policy.

We are still slave owners.

Only the names of the owners are now .gov

And the names of the slaves are now taxpayers.

We are all slaves in one fashion or another.
