The Depressing Similarity Between The US and Iran

Tyler Durden's picture

The share of Americans living on more than $50-a-day dropped from 58% in 2001 to just 56% in Pew Research Center's latest report. The dubious disctinction of this depressing reality is 'exceptional' America is the only developed nation to see its standard of living drop... a narrative not even Greece suffered (but Iran did!!)

As Bloomberg reports,

The retreat in the U.S.'s share puts the world's largest economy in the same league as Iran, the pariah state with whom it's trying to broker a nuclear deal,  and a handful of other countries: Nicaragua, the Philippines, Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Bulgaria and Serbia.

Even Greece saw its share more than double to 23 percent in 2011 (although this improvement will almost certainly be less impressive if the data stretched out to more recent years, given the continued contractions in Greece's economy).

So what happened?

The report says: "The lack of movement up the income ladder in the U.S. is the result of two recessions over the period of 2001 to 2011 —the first in 2001 and the second from 2007 to 2009. The median annual household income in the U.S. fell from $53,646 in 2001 to $50,054 in 2011."

Yeah, I trust Pew about as much as I trust my second cousin who's doing 8 to 12 in The Big House for wire fraud.

Here's what's included in the survey:

  • Earnings
  • Unemployment compensation
  • Workers' compensation
  • Social security
  • Supplemental security income
  • Public assistance
  • Veterans' payments
  • Survivor benefits
  • Disability benefits
  • Pension or retirement income
  • Interest
  • Dividends
  • Rents, royalties, and estates and trusts
  • Educational assistance
  • Alimony
  • Child support
  • Financial assistance from outside of the household
  • Other income

The only one that counts should be the first one, EARNINGS, that's the only source that produces any value, probably, unless you are a banker or a related profession.  I have more respect for hookers who earn a living.

it is certainly the only one taxed at top rates in the u.s.

rent, interest and dividends (and capital gains, possibly inclued in other income) are not.

clearly we see who writes the tax laws.

The first response in Iran to almost anything unplanned is to form a committee. At least from what I saw.

I prefer the term fingerbang, it adds the romantic element.  Based on the size/location/d3scription of said hole, I never considered anything else.

You first thought of penis?    Do you think of penis often?  What other unnatural deviant nonreproductive venues does your penis attend, dare I ask?

Not very specific are they. Is this per person? Per family? Gross income or net income after taxes, IOW actual money available to be spent?

Assuming gross $50 a day would be $18,250 a year. or about $8.77 an hour at a full time job.

To net that a single person with no dependents and no state income tax would have to make $21,800, or $10.48 an hour at a full time job.

Either way minimum wage won't make it.

If it is per person then from the gross numbers that would be $73,000 a year gross income for a family of four which is solidly in the middle class in most parts of the country.

Iran's economy is down only because of shitty sanctions imposed upon them by the West (durp no wonder the government there hates the US oligarchy).

Two Recessions? Or ONE FOURTEEN YEAR DEPRESSION with 24% unemployment for MOST of those years NONSTOP.

Even the great 30s depression was only half as long and half as unemployed as this. Look it up

These numbers are bogus. They don't reflect what kind of lifestyle the money will buy where it is being spent. In China, an auto worker on an assembly line makes about $5 US an hour. That is a good job with good working conditions, health insurance, pension. The employee usually owns a home and all the western style consumer goods an American would expect. There is also cash left over for savings. It allows the worker to lead the equivalent of an American upper blue collar/lower middle class life. What would it take for an American to match this? $25 an hour? How can America compete with this? The horse is out of the barn. Stop talking about closing the door..

Bottom line: it's worse than this article says.

I'm a retired American living in China. I estimate that An American dollar (or Euro or Loonie) goes 5X as far. My wife and I live an upper middle class life here on about $1300 a month, with funds left over for travel 2 or 3 times a year. We don't touch our savings.

But at least the US is 'free' whereas Iran is clasified as 'not free' by the Freedom Index  The latter also supports Argentina's mythical Malvinas claim and this is where the US needs to get off the fence.
