Russia Readies Fuel Deliveries To Athens, Will Support Greek "Economic Revival"

Tyler Durden's picture

Russia and Greece have a "special relationship of spiritual kinship and religious and historical affinity," Vladimir Putin said yesterday, following the BRICS summit in Ulfa.

Over the course of the unfolding crisis in Greece, Athens has at various times gone out of its way to remind Angela Merkel that allowing the country to crash out of the currency bloc may force the Greeks to turn to their other international "friends" (to use Nigel Farage’s words) for assistance. Facing economic sanctions from the EU in connection with its alleged role in destabilizing Ukraine not to mention a spiteful anti-trust suit against Gazprom, the Kremlin has been more than happy to use the rising tensions between Athens and Brussels to its geopolitical advantage.

So far, discussions between Russia and Greece have revolved primarily around energy, and several months back, when negotiations between Athens and creditors began to deteriorate in earnest, reports began to surface that Moscow may consider advancing Greece some €5 billion against the future proceeds from the Greek portion of the proposed Turkish Stream natural gas pipeline.

Although the loan never materialized, the agreement on the pipeline did, and it was held up last week as proof that Greece is "no one's hostage."

Now, that contention will be put to the test as Greece faces the prospect of a "swift time-out" from the eurozone if PM Alexis Tsipras can't convince parliament to agree to a new term sheet from creditors which seeks the implementation of a number of draconian measures in exchange for a third bailout. Of course, as we noted earlier today, a "time-out" is a polite way of saying "get the hell out," and in the event of a messy exit and forced redenomination, an acute cash and credit crunch will likely mean a shortage of critical imports and, in short order, a humanitarian crisis.

Given the mood in Brussels over the weekend, Greece could be forgiven for not putting much faith in Jean Claude-Juncker’s "humanitarian plan", but that’s ok because as AFP reports, Russia is ready to help

Russia is considering direct deliveries of fuel to Greece to help prop up its economy, Energy Minister Alexander Novak said Sunday, quoted by Russian news agencies.

"Russia intends to support the revival of Greece's economy by broadening cooperation in the energy sector," Novak told journalists, quoted by RIA Novosti news agency.

"Accordingly we are studying the possibility of organising direct deliveries of energy resources to Greece, starting shortly."

Novak said that the energy ministry expected "to come to an agreement within a few weeks," but did not specify what type of fuel Russia would supply.

Greece's left-wing leadership has made a show of drawing closer to Moscow in recent months as the spat with its international creditors has grown more ugly.

In June, Greek Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras during a visit to Russia sealed a preliminary agreement for Russia to build a 2-billion-euro ($2.2 billion) gas pipeline through Greece, extending the TurkStream project, which is intended to supply Russian gas to Turkey.

And so it begins. Angela Merkel has long known that one consequence of a Grexit would be a stepped up role for the Kremlin in the Greek economy and Greek politics.

This effecitvely gives Moscow a foothold in Europe just as Russia's deteriorating relationship with the West threatens to plunge the world into a new Cold War (a situation that's been made immeasurably worse by recent NATO war games and sabre rattling).

Or, summarized visually (because this never gets old):

AT close to $19 trillion in debt to pay back, plus the fact that there are $100+ Trillion of government promises which can't be delivered upon, isn't it time that this idea that there is someone out there who is going to ride into town and "Make America Great, Again!, Yes We Can! (ad nauseam), is a pipe dream? This bird is plucked, dressed and plattered. The only argument now is, how is it going to be carved up?

To both you and seretonins' comments...  Well said indeed.

We certainly know that the BRICS carry all the necessary natural resources while the West has very little moving forward.

My point is that the rest of the member states within the BRICS need to back up Russia and advertise their collective displeasure at the bullying of the Anglo-EU contingent by picking up some of the slack for Mr. Putin from now on -especially with what has happened over the past year and a half in the Ukraine given that more than 50,000 lives have vanished and more than a million refugees spilling in to Russia!

Might as well mention the 260,000 dead and counting in Syria and 4 million refugees from that Country alone in the past four years not counting the millions killed in Iraq and millions more displaced since the second invasion of the U.S. in 2003.

Yes indeed... It might be a good idea for the rest of the BRICS members to PR those facts more often instead of letting the Russian Federation broadcast it the vast majority of the time!

"It might be a good idea for the rest of the BRICS members to PR those facts more often instead of letting the Russian Federation broadcast it the vast majority of the time!"   You are right, unfortunately other BRICS seem to a bit more shy to tell the West what they think. And China has been doing this all the time, they just let Putin in the spotlight getting all the blame, while supporting him very quietly in the background (like with Iran and Syria). Well at least they do seem to support Russia financially already. However, very important words from the Chinese president on the recent BRICS and SCO summit: "Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that BRICS countries have to react and jointly protect the security of power, political order, social stability in all member states of the organization. The Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) needs to develop measures to react to threats if member countries' state order is threatened." That is at least a good step - mutual help to prevent colour revolutions? :-) Interesting. Perhaps they think this is necessary to do first, before they dare to advertise their collective displeasure as you say. After all, Putin seems the one with the least likely possibility of color revolution or "uprising" compared to other BRICS. Even China got a scare with the stock market and its economy is slowing down now (simply because all global economies are slowing down). But Russians have already proven that they stand behind Putin no matter what, economic crisis, ruble crash or whatever the USA throws at them.

You're right of course, Tinky. The movie The Never Ending Story had an ending where the hero flies in on the back of a dragon, rescues the princess and the world is saved from the exponentially approaching doom of collapse. Sounds like American voters would sooner literally (I chose that word carefully) believe that Trump or Hillary or some other hero will fly in on a dragon as well, rather than face the reality of the approaching crisis. It can't be stopped and the headlines will grow to cresendoes, covering the front page, ragther than being just a Header.

To me it all still looks like a "bait and switch" where what matters "market wise" happens in China.

Not that that isnt a disaster either...but to me that's where in fact "the news" should be focused.

There was an interesting piece on Reuters about France issuing a bilateral loan to Greece.

That actually doesn't sound fantastical as all the garbage about Putin this and that does.

That would set a legal precedent for a "Frexit" actually...where France "and her partners" (with IMF backing I would imagine) would maintain a "euro bloc" and everyone else gets "returned" to their national currencies.

Unlike the rest of Europe (save Putin's Russia of course) France really does have a solid and experienced military. They also have a good relationship with the United States right now too.

Rumor got shot down immediately but that did actually sound at the least RATIONAL.

Certainly there is a lot of French "self-interest" at work in such a proposal.

Kinda a "we made this fucking EU bullshit now we're gonna blow it apart" thing.

Must say far better theater than anything else going on these days...

I was thinking about Ghost Busters and figure we need something like .Gov Busters.  When a government gets out of line and wants to kill people, you can buy this $24.95 .Gov Buster and it will render predator drones, fighters, bombers and anything like that in your vincinity useless.  That is not a big price to pay to protect your wife and chidren from those nasty things is it?

If they come to your door in the middle of the night like the Gestapo used to do, our insurance program will send in troops to take the bad boys away and leave you in peace.

Now you can live like a free man and your wife and children don't have to worry about .Gov and the games they love to play, only $24.95 cash, gold or silver accepted.

I'll laugh my ass off if Greece starts outgrowing the Eurozone.  It wouldn't be hard once they get out of the clutches of the parasites.

It would be quite funny if the demise of the Eurozone ended up happening because the other PIIGS nations saw Greece recover with the aid of Russia and the BRICS bank, and decided to follow.

Maybe that's one of the main reasons they are concerned about Russia helping Greece.   Because once gone, it might showcase how badly it's the Eurozone itself coupled with the Western financial parasites that is fucking these countries over six ways from Sunday.

Germany and the others like to blame the culture of these countries, when in fact, the biggest fuck job on them is actually the broken system they are a part of that financially drains them.   That lie that it is all their 'culture' being inferior to the Germans might be exposed if they leave.

I'd like to see how the Germans spin that one.

Russia gets the Greeks' few remaining euros, the Greeks get a few hours' worth of fuel which produce for the Greek economy as indicated by its peroformance for the past ... well forever ... exactly 0 economic return. At best it's a pass-through to whoever built the Greek's automobiles - I assume we're talkin' gas/deisel because everything else is irrelevant.

Fact: By now it would have been cheaper for Europeans to simply pay all Greek non-commercial drivers to give up their vehicles and stop consuming oil and maybe even coal too. Truly a testament to human intellect.
