i have been telling this story, that the country of Greece is very similar to the city of San Diego. both exist on the periphery, both have a shipping industry, a tourism industry, and both have been bankrupt for at least ten years. both places have little or no real economy, but they have plenty of rich people. the political hammer in San Diego is their NFL franchise, and the NFL is the same thing as the IMF, they want San Diego to go in debt further for a 1B plus new stadium for a team that is mediocre. in other words we arent a large enough market to support a stadium that would provided the kind of revenue that would allow the owners to buy up good players and coaches and win a superbowl, or even go to one. the team owners bought the team some twenty years ago and now have something like a 100X profit on the franchise. they still want the city to pay for the new stadium, and they will still own the team, which will still be mediocre probably. does this sound familiar? the people of San Diego are used to their football team they consider a badge of honor, even though it costs them in public services just to keep the team around in the old stadium. now the team has a chance to move to Los Angeles, a new stadium, more revenue. so when the city offered what they could, money for a remodel of the old stadium, they laughed. how important is it to have an NFL franchise in your city, maybe not so much, but once you have an NFL team for a long time you feel like you were important and now you are nothing but dirt. (the people of Greece see their legacy being degraded) the NFL is just a bunch of rich bastards who want to impose their ideas of how people should live on everyone else. and their ideas just make those people feel really small. the people of Greece must feel like shit, and when the Chargers leave San Diego, the community will take a collective sigh. its not the end of the world in San Diego, Greece is a bit tougher but the same process. i say take the pain and move on, you'll be better for it in the morning.

WE, collectively, (Victorville, Adelanto, Apple Valley, Hesperia) have a half assed baseball team. I believe they're called the Mavericks. Pretty much a first step up from Pony League. I see a game about every five years or so when someone got free tickets and wants us to go. They could vanish and I'd never notice.
When I was ten Norton AFB gathered up a bunch of kids whose dads were in Viet Nam (it was my impression, for all I knew, my mom sent me to get me out of the house for a day). Sent us to Angel Stadium. It was fun, met Willy Mays and talked a bit, got an autographed baseball from him. Really nice guy to a ten year old. Really nice guy to the rest of the crew. As I recall, he had hit a grand slam, ran the bases and hopped up the wall near the players box to come see us.
One thing to say about Willie Mays...his legacy was never degraded. The guy had class. It's when you have no class that you are degraded. Class will overcome anything.

Seems to be working. I saw pictures of some monster city with ornamental writings and shit. I'm not a city person, don't like them, I stay here in the desert. Going to Los Angeles, or even San Bernardino, is a pain in the ass. More and more as I get older. I don't know how people can live that densely.

Lease a port or two to Russia/China, print a buncha drachmas and return to the 60's for twenty years or so. Or capitalize your currency with what metals you have or on tourist hours or some creative shit. If it has any basis in reality then it's superior to our fuckin' fiat and the euro.
