Little-Known History of the Euro: Crisis Was Baked In from the Start

George Washington's picture

Euro

You’ve heard that the Euro was created to provide two benefits for Europe:

1. Unite Germany, France and other countries in a peaceful political situation, to prevent repeats of World War I and II

2. Create a macro-zone to compete against the economic strength of the U.S.

So how did we get to this … austerity and meanness of spirit, as typified by the grim expressions sported by German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schäuble in talks with Greece?

Schauble

Because the Germans don’t view the Euro as a utopian idealistic way to help promote peace and prosperity for all of the EU nations.

Instead, Germany sees the Euro as a way to weaken its currency to increase exports. As Ben Bernanke notes today:

Germany has benefited from having a currency, the euro, with an international value that is significantly weaker than a hypothetical German-only currency would be. Germany’s membership in the euro area has thus proved a major boost to German exports, relative to what they would be with an independent currency.

Moreover – in a little-known slice of history – the Euro was really created for very different purposes than peace in Europe or competition against the U.S.

Specifically, this guy – a North American named Robert Mundell – is the father of the Euro:

Mundell

Mundell is not the least bit European. Born in Canada, Mundell taught at the University of Chicago for 7 years, and has since taught at Columbia University in New York for more than 40 years.

But didn’t Mundell create the Euro to help Europe?

Not according to Guardian, Independent and BBC investigative journalist Greg Palast, who explained in his book Vulture’s Picnic:

Who spawned this cruel little bastard coin?

I called its parent, Professor Robert Mundell. Mundell is known as the Father of the Euro. The Euro is often spoken of as a means to unite post-war Europeans together emotionally and politically and to give this united Europe the economic power to compete with the U.S. economy.

That’s horseshit.

The Euro was invented in New York, New York, at Columbia University. Professor Mundell invented both the Euro and the guiding light of Thatcher-Reagan government: “Supply Side Economics” or, as George Bush Sr. accurately called it, “Voodoo Economics.” Reagan-Thatcher voodoo and the Euro are two sides of the same coin. (Ouch! Some puns hurt.)

Like the Iron Lady and President Gaga. the Euro is inflexible. That is, once you join the Euro, your nation cannot fight recession by using fiscal or monetary policy. That leaves “wage reduction, fiscal constraints (cutting government jobs and benefits) as the only recourse in crisis,” The Wall Street Journal explains with joy—and sell-offs of government property (privatizations).

Why the Euro, Professor? Dr. Mundell told me he was upset at zoning rules in Italy that did not allow him to put his commode where he wanted to in his villa there. “They’ve got rules that tell me I can’t have a toilet in this room. Can you imagine?”

I couldn’t really. I don’t have an Italian villa, so I cannot really imagine the burden of commode placement restriction.

The Euro will eventually allow you to put your toilet any damn place you want.

He meant that the only way the government can create jobs is to fire people, cut benefits, and, crucially, cut the rules and regulations that restrict business.

He told me: “Without fiscal policy, the only way nations can keep jobs is by the competitive reduction of rules on business.” Besides bowl location, he was talking about the labor laws, which raise the price of plumbers, environmental regulations, and, of course, taxes.

No, I am not making this up. And I am not saying the Euro was imposed on the Old Country just so the professor could place his toilet at a place of maximum pleasure. The Euro is fashioned as an anti-regulation straitjacket that would eliminate gallons-per-flush laws, flush away restrictive banking regulation, and all other government controls.

Now does the destruction of Greece’s sovereignty make a little more sense?

As Palast pointed out in the Guardian:

The idea that the euro has “failed” is dangerously naive. The euro is doing exactly what its progenitor – and the wealthy 1%-ers who adopted it – predicted and planned for it to do.

***

For him, the euro wasn’t about turning Europe into a powerful, unified economic unit. It was about Reagan and Thatcher.

***

And when crises arise, economically disarmed nations have little to do but wipe away government regulations wholesale, privatize state industries en masse, slash taxes and send the European welfare state down the drain.

***

Far from failing, the euro, which was Mundell’s baby, has succeeded probably beyond its progenitor’s wildest dreams.

In other words, the Euro was intended to impose a Shock Doctrine straightjacket on Europe, where the big banks are stripping Greece and other countries of their public assets, pillaging, plundering and looting them of their natural resources and wealth.

Postscript: Mundell is also the creator of supply side economics … also known as “trickle down” or “piss on the poor” economics.

Many of Reagan’s top economic advisors subsequently admitted that supply side economics don’t work to help the economy.  See this, this this and this. (Washington’s Blog is for free market capitalism … but supply side economics is crony capitalism, not free market capitalism.)

Moreover – as Martin Armstrong has warned for decades – letting countries like Greece join he Euro without first structurally adjusting their debts was a recipe for disaster.   For example, when the Euro double in value a couple of years ago, Greece’s debt doubled in real terms.  That’s when Greek really started sliding towards crisis …

So the wealthy nations like Germany – intentionally or unintentionally – and the other wealthy nations laid the groundwork from the start for asset stripping in Greece and other indebted states.

Indeed, Armstrong and Nigel Farage (member of the European Parliament and leader of the UK Independence Party) say:

The Greek people never voted to enter the euro … it was forced upon them by Goldman Sachs and their politicians.

Europe is as fake as the Pluto flyby....

What are the odds that the probe could travel over 3 billion miles through space without hitting so much as a grain of sand?? At 40,000 mph that grain of sand would punch a hole in the craft big enough to stick your fat head into. Something the size of a screw would total it off. I crunched the numbers and I have a better chance of being struck by lightning originating on Venus. The way I see it,  All those unemployed gamer programmers got to have something to do. A dozen gamer programmers is a fraction of the cost NASA has spent. So...odds are in favor its all fake...everything. The gamer's are simply sending everything they created back to NASA via a secure connection. NASA is no wiser. And besides, Joe Q PUBLIC (EU) wouldn't know sh$t from honey if his mouth was full of it

Tragically, the more one looks into the history of NASA, the more plausible it becomes that they participate in the overall systems of Huge Lies, backed by Lots of Violence, that is controlling civilization generally.

Personally, I believe that the Pluto flyby was really happening. However, I would not be surprised to discover otherwise, since there tends to arise more and more reasonable doubts regarding almost any "official story" that one bothers to investigate deeper.

The case in point is the article above, where the Euro was invented and promoted in order to serve evil ulterior motives. Generally speaking, these days what I tend to believe that there is some sort of real space program (which includes the recent Pluto fly-by), BUT, those activities are covering up other deeply hidden activities. For all I know, there may well some secret space program, and that the actual public space program is merely an extremely expensive way to cover the secret space program up.

When it comes to the European Union and the Euro, there is no reasonable doubt that those had evil ulterior intentions, which have actually been achieved, while the publicly stated goals were merely more of the same old sorts of professional lying and immaculate hypocrisy, that ALWAYS enabled the opposite to actually happen. Overall, there is NO reasonable doubt that civilization is controlled by lies backed by violence. However, those lies are different at every level, and so, I never feel too confident about supposing that I have arrived at any level of relative "truth" regarding those.

My basic view is that the international banksters have lost control over the systems that they original made and maintained by being able to apply the methods of organized crime to control governments. I do not believe that that are any human beings who are able to find their way thoroughly through the apparently infinite tunnels of deceits, that have been amplified to astronomical sizes by progress in physical science, mostly ending up being applied to get better at being dishonest and backing that up with violence.

Anyway, my favourite pet theory regarding NASA these days is that they are operating a real, public, space program, while that is a cover for some other levels of secret space programs. I would expect that information to be extremely compartmentalized on some "need to know" basis, so that most of the people actually working for NASA do not have a clue about what such secret activities may have been ...

After one goes through enough cognitive dissonance to accept the FACTS that the international bankers are the biggest gangsters, who were able to corrupt governments to enforce frauds, and recognizes the awesome magnitudes of the power that those trillionaire mass murderers have commanded in the past, I find one becomes much more able to consider that almost any other topic one examines through deeper analysis ends up demonstrating layer after layer of lies backed by violence operating in that specialized domain too. Civilization has actually become more psychotic and criminally insane that anyone could fully comprehend.

Hence, that NASA is lying by omission about extremely important facts appears to me to be extremely probable as the case ... although I have barely any clues what they may be thereby lying about, (& I do not trust anyone who says they do) ... But nevertheless, I tend to start by presuming that, because they are part of the government, therefore, they are run by the best professional hypocrites, the same as every other aspect of the bankster controlled governments are ...

I don't know if NASA missions are real or not, but I worked at a bomb factory for a while in 2001.  They made explosive nuts and bolts (right next to Six Flags Magic Mountain).  One of the engineers gave me a token.

It's a six inch nut for the space shuttle.  It was designed to blow apart and allow separation of various components.

Each nut and bolt had it's own serial number, tracked to the inth degree, right down to the foundry that poured the steel for it.

Mine has no explosives, but taking inventory was a nervous bitch at the time.

I don't think some fantasy would insist on the minutia of tracking thousands of parts through the entire supply line.  Let alone the fantastic cost of maintaining such a system.  (This nut, with explosives, would sell for something like $1,000 or more.)  There's too many people in the supply line to allow anything at the level of a NASA lie or an Obama lie to continue.

Hi radical marijuana: As you know, real science is dear too me. NASA and the Dept. of Energy have been totally captured by the fascist banksters. They serve the fascist banksters. I can prove that quite easily. The banksters have kept hidden in plain sight free energy presented by Nicola Tesla and demonstrated at his Wardenclyffe tower facility. The fascist have no intentions of phasing out the use of fossil fuels for free energy, they make too much money from oil and gas; they are like status-quo grasshoppers. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Like all those fake "free electricity" advertisements in the sidebars of websites, Tesla's generator is strictly for the gullible.

Lots of articles and books claim to clarify his inventions and all fail - what they do manage to depict is a perpetual motion machine - and we know how well those work!

Wardenclyffe was a wonderful experiment in energy TRANSMISSION, but was creating energy out of thin air. Sorry.

In reply to rovinggokker: Your wrong again, like most of your comments.

Without going into technical explanation, here is an excerpt from Wikipedia concerning the Wardenclyffe  facility:

“He theorized from these experiments that if he injected electric current into the Earth at just the right frequency he could harness what he believed was the planets own electrical charge and cause it to resonate at a frequency that would be amplified in "standing waves" that could be tapped anywhere on the planet to run devices”

There: “free” electric power generation and transmission that has been “suppressed science” and maintaining the bankster status quo. Like I said, real science is dead.

It should be obvious to everyone that there is no investment in building up the American economy. Computer technology was funded and developed with American public funds.

Can you imagine Detroit today if American computer science technology manufacturing had made Detroit their home base for manufacturing and built up our American manufacturing economy to sell computers to the rest of the world?

The European Union before the Eurozone, was designed and implemented by the bankster financed and controlled Council on Foreign Relations and the Trilateral Commission. Goldman Sachs is but one tentacle of the criminal bankster world financial octopus of the New World Order Empire.

Our American Constitution has not been destroyed (same for Greece Constitution); it has been overthrown by bankster fascist (government of, for and by multinational corporate monopoly). The American Constitution and our Bill of Rights, as authored primarily by James Madison and explained in the Federalist Papers, are still intact today.

Our Founding Fathers had to deal with the same problems we are facing today: domination by corporate monopoly over the American economy and obeying foreign laws.

We fought the American Revolution to be free from the corporate monopoly and domination of the American economy by the British Empire.

After we won the war, our Founding Fathers along with economist Adam Smith’s “Free Enterprise” economy, the American Constitution was written to guarantee the American People that the government function was for and by the People--- not government of, for and by the criminal corporate monopoly.  The Age of Enlightenment of constitutional democratic republics began.

To paraphrase Thomas Jefferson, the Constitution, if not vigilantly guarded against criminal corporate monopoly corruption, the people will have to refreash our Constitution with revolution. Indeed, our nation was founded on revolution in rejection of corporate monopoly and domination by totalitarian criminal banksters.

Enough is enough! Nationalize the banks and requisition them to serve the People to restart our American Free Enterprise economy, throw the fascist totalitarian bankster criminals in prison!

If the criminal banksters were prosecuted for American mortgage fraud back in 2000 the criminals would have been in prison instead of destroying the economies of the world with their fascist totalitarian New World Order Empire.

I've looked this up before and found Dutch East India, Hudson Bay company, some Hong Kong or Opium companies, but I have to look again must be French & Portugese companies...

Any Reality check here?

"Hudson Bay"

"The company was incorporated by English royal charter in 1670 as The Governor and Company of Adventurers of England trading into Hudson's Bay and functioned as the de facto government in parts of North America before European states and later the United States laid claim to some of those territories."

"Chartering of the Muscovy Company

The Company of Merchant Adventurers was rechartered as the Muscovy Company by Mary I of England in 1555, and in the same year Chancellor left for Russia again. The Muscovy Company became an important diplomatic link between Muscovy and England, and was especially valued by the isolated Muscovy. Upon his arrival to the court of Ivan IV, Chancellor secured a number of privileges within Russia for the company, including free passage, control of English settlement, and freedom from arrest.[4]"

"Queen Elizabeth I granted the Muscovy Company a monopoly charter on whaling in 1577. The primary and most profitable whaling grounds of this joint-stock company came to be centered around Spitsbergen in the early 17th century, and the company's royal charter of 1613 granted a monopoly on whaling in Spitsbergen, based on the (erroneous) claim that Hugh Willoughby had discovered the land in 1553.[8][9] Initially the English tried to drive away competitors, but after a few years, they claimed rights only to the waters south of these Arctic islands.[10]"

The public Bank of North Dakota is doing fine with the  criminal element taken out of the banking system. Ellen Brown has printed volumes on the subject of nationalizing the Federal Reserve and establishing a National Bank that is free from the usury criminal element that you call “natural”.

Yes, criminals do occur naturally in society but most civilized societies throw them in prison to protect society from the evil criminal element. Ha. Ha. Ha.

Nationalize the Federal Reserve! Throw the criminal banksters is prison! Repudiate the criminal banksters system of debt peonage! Restart our Free Enterprise System economy (that is FREE from corporate monopoly) with investments into the manufacturing economy.

Ned:

Since the government of the USA was able to transform the single best plant on the planet, hemp for food, fiber, fun and medicine, into "marijuana that is almost as bad as murder," and keep enforing those Huge Lies with Lots of Violence, for decade after decade, one should NOT underestimate the degree to which the government of the USA is controlled by the best available professional liars and immaculate hypocrites!

I have no clue whether any of the personal attacks against Obama are true or not, and I would not waste my time clicking on the video that windcatcher linked, because it would never be possible to resolve the doubts that I expect would be reasoanbly raised, if I did bother to watch that. But nevertheless, these days I start off presuming that the government of the USA is dominated by criminally insane liars, and that the people who effectively control those people are even more psychotic and psychopathic. Therefore, I would not be surprised if any of the wildest possible "conspiracy theories" turned out to have been correct. After all there are now declassified CIA documents which proves that the popularization of the phrase "conspiracy theory" by the mass media was deliberately promoted by the CIA's media assets, as a very successful propaganda campaign.

I am not saying that I believe what windcatcher suggested, and I do not care enough to bother to investigate any further. What I am asserting is that I find that it ALWAYS happens that the more one learns about politics, the worse it gets. To paraphrase Haldane, Washington politics is probably not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose:

My own suspicion is that the Universe is not only queerer than we suppose, but queerer than we can suppose.

I did not previously know those historical details presented in the article above, however, those do not surprise me! The European Union and its Euro were projects of the international bankers, within which context almost all of the successful national politicians were the banksters' puppets, voted for by enough of the people who have become the banksters' muppets, while the European politicians, and those that voted for them, became mostly even more so...

The EU and Euro were stepping stones.

Tragedy and Hope by Carroll Quigley:

had another far-reaching goal,

I did too actually.

There is nothing wrong with the euro...it is depreciating just as the folks who agreed to it want it to.

This has been what the Fed et al have been saying all along isn't it?

"We want INFLATION."

Certainly that is what Ben Bernanke said.

At some point the folks who actually implemented the euro might want to change their mind about that.

I don't know why Germany is so cranky about it though...they've been the biggest winner here.

It is interesting to watch the ETF's though. The short euro ETF is down a LOT more than the euro itself...which seems kinda odd.
