UMich Consumer Sentiment Drops, Misses By Most Since 2006

Tyler Durden's picture

Since January's exuberant peak, UMich consumer sentiment has drifted lower. Expectations for July's preliminary data was 96.0 but the 93.3 print is the biggest miss since 2006. Both current and future "hope" conditions dropped markedlywith details showing American sless certain about retirement, less confident about income growth outpacing inflation, and businesses considerably less confident.

Yep.  We deal with major retailers, and represent multiple vendors as their sales agents.

The basic replenishment programs we have in place have been weakening all year.  I told my partner several months ago that this was starting to feel like 2008.  I was at a 600 store chain on Wednesday, and my buyer had to cut our meeting short, as he had to go to ahnother meeting to discuss why one of their categories was not performing to projection (which meand they bought the goods, but the goods are not turning as planned).  Business is continuing a slow slide downward.

Guaranteed way to make BIG MONEY: When the market is looking like it's finally going off a cliff and the VIX is above 15, put everything you have in XIV.  On this last go around you would have made over 25% in a few days.  XIV is the fed's desperation gauge...when things start to fly apart and the vix is getting elevated, they will pound down the vix, and the XIV goes through the roof...check it out.

OK, so what?  Markets at all time highs.  HFT algos aren't consumers and they are controlling the markets.  Everything else is irrelevant.

A tsunami of diarrhea was sighted off the coast of the land of Floundering. The government officials stayed true to the playbook and urged citizens to grab bowls and spoons to make it easier. Anyone caught adding stool-thickener to the waters would be labeled as a non-privileged combatant.
