GOP Enters Panic Mode: Des Moines Register Calls For Trump To Withdraw From Presidential Race

Tyler Durden's picture

When Donald Trump announced he would give 2016 another try as a republican presidential candidate, the GOP saw him as a mild nuisance. Little did they appreciate just how big of a "nightmare" he would very soon become, a nightmare which now sees the flamboyant billionaire whose self-reported net worth fluctuates daily with a double digit percentage lead over his closest competitor Scott Walker.

But the biggest mistake the GOP did is they inability to comprehend that either the US public enjoys being trolled, or is just so sick of the left/right paradigm, it will gladly latch on to anyone, even the most farcical, self-lampooning candidate, who promises a break from the old routine which has proven not to work for the common American.

The latest confirmation that the Trump "nightmare" is causing not only sleepless nights but also panic attacks for a GOP that is scrambling to respond to the Donald's juggernaut is not only open attempts at caricature, which however merely feed Trump's ego and push him to troll his accusers even more, but to use the influential Des Moines Register, Iowa's largest newspaper and a critical voice when it comes to endorsing, or panning, presidential candidates in this first caucus state, to call on Donald Trump to drop out of the 2016 presidential race.

Officially the Register's position was simply in escalation to the furor over the real estate magnate's weekend comments about Sen. John McCain's service during the Vietnam War. As Fox reports, in an editorial piece published late Monday, the Register said Trump's comments were "not merely offensive, they were disgraceful. So much so, in fact, that they threaten to derail not just his campaign, but the manner in which we choose our nominees for president."

The paper, the most influential in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, went on to say that if "[Trump] had not already disqualified himself through his attempts to demonize immigrants as rapists and drug dealers, he certainly did so by questioning [McCain's] war record."

Unofficially, it is called throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks.

Following this weekend's firestorm, Trump - who clearly enjoys playing the starring role in every social scandal - appeared to back off some of his comments Monday, telling Fox News' Bill O'Reilly that "if there was a misunderstanding, I would totally take that back." However, Trump also said he "used to like [McCain] a lot. I supported him ... but I would love to see him do a much better job taking care of the veterans."

Whether Trump's apology is sincere or not, the nationwide response he got for his comments, coupled with his popularity surge, will merely encourage him. And since for the real estate magnate, advertising is everything, the fact that he has become the only topic of discussion, whether at the water cooler or during the prime time news circuit, expect the Trump-eting to continue to whatever bitter end is in store.

The Register, which broke a 40-year run of backing Democrats in presidential elections by endorsing Mitt Romney in 2012, was the latest voice to pile on Trump for his comments, joining veterans groups, Republican colleagues and President Obama's spokesman, who defended McCain and called on Trump to apologize.

Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said Monday that Trump's "asinine comments" were "an insult to everyone who has ever worn the uniform — and to all Americans."

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said veterans "are entitled to an apology."

The bottom line is that the GOP did not take Trump seriously, which is precisely what he wanted. And now that underestimation is costing the GOP dearly, as it scrambles with damage control which merely adds insult to injury, because conventional retaliation that may have worked with any other candidate simply strengthens Trump.

Then again, considering America's artificially polarizing left/right model - all of it controlled by unelected corporations and bailed out Wall Street banks - has failed, and a vote for Trump is not "a vote for Trump" but a vote against America's broken political system, perhaps it is the case that the president the US truly needs, and the one person the American electorate will select, is this guy.

I'm sorry, but I have to call the Tylers out on this click bait... I grew up in Des Moines, IA (sad, I know...) but there's one thing that sticks out in my mind about the DSM Register... the entire editorial board (ok, maybe a bit of hyperbole there) is liberal, borderline socialist.  My take on the Register calling for Trump to end his campaign is simply that they want to clear the way for Hillary.  If Bush were the front runner, they'd be lambasting him over something.  Trump's comments are just low-hanging fruit for those lib-tards and fthe Tylers trying to make something more out of it, frankly, just pisses me off... that's why I take everything I see on here with a grain of salt anymore...

'The Donald will restore respect and stature to America, 'The Donald' is not bowing to Political Correctness nor any other sacred cows as for the John McCain Hero? non Hero? debate, most people, my self included, believe McCain, along with many others, spent time in the Hanoi Hilton, an ordeal I haven't faced nor would I want to face, for this he deserves, and gets my, respect,  hopefully the Government gives him, and all who faced that ordeal a good pension, where the story might be a bit embellished is the part where they wanted to release him and he refused to leave, remember now, these are the people who tortured him, if an American prison wanted you to leave, do you think you could refuse to go? These people torture him yet he has the power to refuse their commands, I hope his story is true in every detail, I am sure there are many children, and some not so young, with a picture of John McCain on their wall just to the right of Jesus whom which they draw inspiration every night as they say their evening Prayers!

I would be surprised if Trump won the presidency, but what he is doing is great for conservatives.  The real voice of conservatism has been stifled by the MSM, the thought police and political correctness.  The person on Main Street has been fearful of speaking out for fear of political retribution (when De Bliaso says NY won't do business with Trump isn't that discriminaton?).  Trump is the only candidate with the guts to stand up and call out the left on its tyrannical tactics and he is the voice that so many people have waited to hear.  While the rest of the Repugs waddle in politically correct circles, scared to offend any of the very small liberal special interest groups that scream so loud,  and fail to espouse the strenghts of conservatism the way Reagan did, Trump is out calling it as he sees it and this scares the shit out of the status quo....he may need to fear more than El Chapo.  I for one love what he is doing...he has POTUS on his heels and single handedly is uniting bullied and beat down conservatives behind one voice.  He'll make mistakes for sure, but I'd rather have a guy who calls it as he sees it and makes a few mistakes over the one who is to scared or timid to call out bullshit...and its great he's calling out losers in his own party.  Watch, he'll carry this thing to the end and then pick a candidate to back and send all his votes that way.  Trump could be the best thing that happened to conservatism since Reagan.

Trump said it out loud. Anyone who wants to succeed must pay the libs, especially if you are operating on the east coast, NY to be specific. Everyone knows it and Trump said it, that its all cronyism now. Pay to play. We hate it but like everything else about our corrupt system, none of us can really afford to be throwing stones in our glass houses. Trump seems to think he can.

I don't know what he is all about and like you I am suspicious of him, but you can't deny he is laying it up side the heads of the mainstream republicans and it is great to watch. They are genuinely frightened of him...and for damned good reason as they at best have been setting on their hands for years and years.

I do get tired of every candidate being trashed because of this or that. We are rightly cynical, but perfection is not on the menu.

Well the SOCIALISTS masquerading as Libertarians here, Billy the Poet, cannot handle the inconvenient facts.

Trump did call for the execution of Snowden.

It is a fact. They do not want to even deal with the truth.

It is sad that they are all seeking the Great White Hope and Trump is not it. There is no hope. The reason that there is no hope is that ZH is populated by these entitlement menatlity whiners...WHO ARE IN DENIAL THAT THEY HAVE THE ENTITLEMENT MENTALITY.

They will declare that they are anti state and yet they are just anti Obma. Well I cannot blame them for that as I am also anti Obama.

But they actually believe that something will change when Obama leaves and it is their guy's turn. Yes I will agree that it will change. It will get much, much worse as there is a progression of the totalitarianism.

Trump he wants to have whistleblowers serverely punished but then is contradictory when he suggests that Obama's records are released for public scrutiny. It is laughable.

And then they do not even want to talk about Trump's stance on the 2nd Amendment. It does not fit in with their world view and their narrative.

And I will be as junked as you for posting this.

And after it collapses you can see the reason that so many will perish as they are so unfit to survive it. They are just sucked into it and too damned stupid.

Consider that for decades roughly 50% of the people (living and dead) have been voting for president, and every cycle we see billions spent on turning what seems to be a tiny portion, say 3%, one way or another.

What if we had a candidate who actually pursued the 50% that haven't been voting. At the very least we know these folks have not been voting for more free shit, so that has to be a good thing. The only other alternative is a revolution and/or collapse, neither of which seem all that appealing. Not participating solves nothing accept to avoid blame supposedly....but just so you know, I still blame you for Obama...both times, because yes, I still think the alternative was less worse...so shoot me. I will accept responsibility for my choices.

I think there is  a big problem with the voting system.

I think that true democratic votes would be based on popular opinion and not "first past the post".  There is a problem with the way voting is structured.

Politicos in the British system are scared shitless of any reform that tilts the reps into who got the most votes overall.  Always first past the post in every riding.  So you get gov's that have low apporval getting majority reps.

The USA USA voting system is equally as screwed.

I think our election system should be overhauled for sure. My preference would to be to have a series of runoffs. We currently have a field of approximately 20 candidates from both parties. Instead of primaries, have multiple elections, starting with those who can qualify to be on the ballot by collecting a certain number of signatures. Once the field is set have a general election, eliminating those in the bottom half. Repeat this process until we are down to two.

This two party deal is fucked in that we can have a republican, a democrat, and an even more conservative third party candidate....all three running but the conservative sapping off conservative votes meaning the true minority candidate would win. By ensuring that the final election is a choice between two, we have the best chance of the election at least being representative of the dominant perspective. By having a series of runoffs we have a better exposure to the candidates.

I would also like to see real debates, one on one, with a moderator like real debates are supposed to be conducted. This could be done on a public access channel and the net so everyone would have access to them, not just once but on demand. The current version of debates is more of a public presentation forum with very little exposure of ideas and platforms until the final contestants are selected. I want to see more of all of them, before they have been eliminated by Iowa.

Oldwood, your preference still looks a bit like a tennis tournament system, all mired to have one winner only, the "one-in-power", be it one executive, one party, etc. isn't it?

and since there is only one seat of power available, this automatically makes two factions to contend for it

to the result that any third candidate, third party or third opinion is often a hindrance to the next nearer contendent

my question to that would be why is it so important to have such a focused, "winner takes all" system at all

ZH: "either (A) the US public enjoys being trolled, or (B) is just so sick of the left/right paradigm, it will gladly latch on to anyone, even the most farcical, self-lampooning candidate, who promises a break from the old routine which has proven not to work for the common American"

(A): can't judge that, but for sure there is an American audience on ZH that does enjoy any kind of doom theory. well, some are fascinating, I have to admit. I just can't follow the "enjoyment" part

(B): NOT SICK ENOUGH. the dual paradigm is 100% product of an electoral system from the 18th Century, period

as long as one seat is for votes, two will contend for it, be them green versus black or red versus blue or whatever

my problem with direct elections for one seat of power is a different one: it gives the one a whole load of... legitimacy. The One Speaks For The People, All Of Them

even the ancient Romans, who the US Founding Fathers admired, found it that One is at least One Too Few

But for the here and now, you got to love what he's doing to the established candidates sure to sell us out.

i see trump as a man, who while has deff been a controversial figure for all these years, he is a man who will not be intimidated by anyone, and he will call it like it is.

also, unlike all the other candidates, particularly hillary and bush, trump is not being bought by everyone, as he has too much money to spend in his life.

Yea people talk alot of shit about Trump but almost none of those people have been more successful in life than he.

He is a smart guy, I trust him to run shit better than any of those other clowns.  What have they done done besides become career politicians?

But Trump is running for tyrant. He says that Americans "deserve" the gutting of the Second Amendment.

"I generally oppose gun control, but I support the ban on assault weapons and I also support a slightly longer waiting period to purchase a gun. With today’s Internet technology we should be able to tell within seventy-two hours if a potential gun owner has a record." -- Donald Trump, The America We Deserve

Very few rich people want you and me to have guns. They can hire private protection all nice and legal. That's why I already have mine. And besides, it's not really about guns. Our leaders have repeatedly demonstrated they really don't give a shit about us anyway. This have been pushing this theme for decades now and all it has done is create record sales of guns and ammo. They would never be able to get rid of all of it, if much at all. Most of us lost them with our metals in a boating accident anyway.

The real purpose in my mind is that knowing that guns are everywhere and largely ideology held, that few if any would relinquish them on demand. What this does is instantly make us outlaws.

What is the one commonality between ALL outlaws?

THEY HAVE NO CONSTITUTIONAL RIGHTS, other than a speedy trial...supposedly, unless you are a security threat in which case you can have indefinite detention. Maybe this all sounds too nuts, but think about it. They have done everything to usurp our constitutional rights and using political correctness to silence us. Once we are self aware to our outlaw status, we will be silenced, as we know that our speech (likely monitored) will put light upon us that could have extreme consequences compared to what we face currently. And as we know we are all here anonymously, not because we are ashamed of our birth name.

Capitulation requires coercion, either through bribery or threat, and our threat is demonstrated through our silence.

I submit a tyrant model for The Donald's consideration.

Never forget that a tyrant is free to change his/her mind at any time.

It's what tyrants do.

OK, let's say The Donald is a little "over the top" for your tastes as a somewhat mainstream Republican or probably more accurately, somebody who generally holds with conservative values.

Fair enough, I can understand that.

But would it kill the R's other candidates to show just a LITTLE BIT of fire in the belly like The Donald does?  Just anything that looks like maybe they're just the slightest bit mad as hell about the shitty direction this country is taking and show you're willing to start PUSHING BACK?  Or are they all of the John Boehner/Mitch McConnell "dear God, don't anybody rock the boat!" school of walking on political egg shells?

Is it not OBVIOUS to the other candidates that showing SOME backbone is appreciated across a HUGE swath of the electorate?  I mean, can't they learn ANYTHING from The Donald's success?  What he is doing is called WINNING.  Other candidates might want to try to emulate it some time.

By the way, Hillary just made another $100MM in the time it too me to write this.
