GOP Enters Panic Mode: Des Moines Register Calls For Trump To Withdraw From Presidential Race

Tyler Durden's picture

When Donald Trump announced he would give 2016 another try as a republican presidential candidate, the GOP saw him as a mild nuisance. Little did they appreciate just how big of a "nightmare" he would very soon become, a nightmare which now sees the flamboyant billionaire whose self-reported net worth fluctuates daily with a double digit percentage lead over his closest competitor Scott Walker.

But the biggest mistake the GOP did is they inability to comprehend that either the US public enjoys being trolled, or is just so sick of the left/right paradigm, it will gladly latch on to anyone, even the most farcical, self-lampooning candidate, who promises a break from the old routine which has proven not to work for the common American.

The latest confirmation that the Trump "nightmare" is causing not only sleepless nights but also panic attacks for a GOP that is scrambling to respond to the Donald's juggernaut is not only open attempts at caricature, which however merely feed Trump's ego and push him to troll his accusers even more, but to use the influential Des Moines Register, Iowa's largest newspaper and a critical voice when it comes to endorsing, or panning, presidential candidates in this first caucus state, to call on Donald Trump to drop out of the 2016 presidential race.

Officially the Register's position was simply in escalation to the furor over the real estate magnate's weekend comments about Sen. John McCain's service during the Vietnam War. As Fox reports, in an editorial piece published late Monday, the Register said Trump's comments were "not merely offensive, they were disgraceful. So much so, in fact, that they threaten to derail not just his campaign, but the manner in which we choose our nominees for president."

The paper, the most influential in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, went on to say that if "[Trump] had not already disqualified himself through his attempts to demonize immigrants as rapists and drug dealers, he certainly did so by questioning [McCain's] war record."

Unofficially, it is called throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks.

Following this weekend's firestorm, Trump - who clearly enjoys playing the starring role in every social scandal - appeared to back off some of his comments Monday, telling Fox News' Bill O'Reilly that "if there was a misunderstanding, I would totally take that back." However, Trump also said he "used to like [McCain] a lot. I supported him ... but I would love to see him do a much better job taking care of the veterans."

Whether Trump's apology is sincere or not, the nationwide response he got for his comments, coupled with his popularity surge, will merely encourage him. And since for the real estate magnate, advertising is everything, the fact that he has become the only topic of discussion, whether at the water cooler or during the prime time news circuit, expect the Trump-eting to continue to whatever bitter end is in store.

The Register, which broke a 40-year run of backing Democrats in presidential elections by endorsing Mitt Romney in 2012, was the latest voice to pile on Trump for his comments, joining veterans groups, Republican colleagues and President Obama's spokesman, who defended McCain and called on Trump to apologize.

Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said Monday that Trump's "asinine comments" were "an insult to everyone who has ever worn the uniform — and to all Americans."

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said veterans "are entitled to an apology."

The bottom line is that the GOP did not take Trump seriously, which is precisely what he wanted. And now that underestimation is costing the GOP dearly, as it scrambles with damage control which merely adds insult to injury, because conventional retaliation that may have worked with any other candidate simply strengthens Trump.

Then again, considering America's artificially polarizing left/right model - all of it controlled by unelected corporations and bailed out Wall Street banks - has failed, and a vote for Trump is not "a vote for Trump" but a vote against America's broken political system, perhaps it is the case that the president the US truly needs, and the one person the American electorate will select, is this guy.

What I think you're tapping into (and we got it in spades out Pennsylvania way, too) is that the Republican party is NO LONGER A VIABLE POLITICAL PARTY, ABSENT DONALD TRUMP.

They're sure as shit not a conservative party any more.  They're not even an opposition party.  They're helping and enabling the current administration in every way possible.

So... what the fuck do we need them for?  Nothing.  Hell, I at least respect that the Ds can get their shit together and push for an agenda.  What have the Rs done since winning HUGE gains in Congress in both 2010 and 2014?  Absolutely fucking nothing.  If anything, they've become even MORE compliant.  Worthless piles of shit.  Let's just elect a King, send Congress home and be done with it.

Most of our congress and senate are outright treasonous. If they were part of another country doing what they are doing to the USA, we would have declared war on that country. Instead, they are part of us, so we plant our heads where the sun does not shine.

I heard a comedian tell a joke about how if we're ever invaded by giant aliens we should climb up and attack their buttholes, and they wouldn't stick around long. Just go straight for the buttholes from day one. Say whatever you want about Trump, but he is clearly a man that is willing to put on the climbing gear and hack at giant buttholes.

the Iowa GOP Party is directly plugged into the RNC, this is all about party politics and the Establishment organs such as the RNC and the subordinate state party orgs work for the most part in lock step.  Trump isn't a party functionary, and never has been.  He's akin to an uppity nigger saying he wants to sit at the table. Iowa isn't exactly a bastion of intelligence.  Des Moines is a shithole.  Even worse is Council Bluffs.  It's all dumb idiots living on farms they inherited, never having had to go out and make something of themselves.  Unsocialized, living an easy life with no challenges and feeling like all-stars.  It's the same as North and South Dakota and other rural farmer states.

Yes Vortmax- it is very telling that both parties and the MSM/central planners are trying their best to marginalize him. It shows how much he scares them. He has not been vetted by them and therefore, to them, he poses a threat to the status quo.

Edit: One other thing- The MSM and establishment don't seem to realize that the more they excoriate Trump the more traction he will accrue.

After spending a career buying politicians, Trump knows how the game is played. His implication is that he has all the money and influence he needs and can now not be bought. If true, it would be a first. Every other one seems to have been forced to suckle at the teat of power brokers to pay the stupendously high costs of campaigns.

The fact is that Trump could be an axe murderer and still not be morally unfit to serve by any comparison. Unfortunately it seems to be a prerequisite.

Einstein said the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over then expecting a different result.  So the morons and sheeples have been electing reelecting over and over and over again entrenched career politician turds only interested in preserving their power and feathering their own personal nests rather than addressing the concerns and looking out for U.S. Citizen tax paying citizens.  On the career politician turds watch the debt is $19 trillion, America's standing is diminished below what Carter the 2nd worst U.S. President enabled, the Constitution is repeatedly trampled by those whose oath of office is to protect it (including the fossilized mental masturbation political farts in SCOTUS) while giving freebies and get out of jail free cards to criminals and illegal aliens.

If I were an American, I would vote for Trump. Why? Very simple. Understand this: all USA politicians have been puppets so far. But Trump is not a puppet, he is one of the puppet-masters. It has been a good and sensible policy of the puppet masters to remain in the background (and this also ensured that they do not become too jealous of one another). But if one of them gets to such a position? To lead the USA, to command the army? Do you really think the other puppet masters can be happy with that? Do you think they are not afraid in the least, what could happen if one of them gets this position? How can they be sure that he would not use this to his advantage, that he would not turn against them (or some of them)? What if the popularity gets to his head, what if he suddenly wants to have it all and to send the other coleague puppet masters to hell. This is simple human psychology. This is bound to plant a seed of discord among the puppet masters. That's why all that panic.

However, I don't believe they will let him get this position. This would go against their instincts. On the other hand, the fact that they even let him get this far shows that they are really stupid. They tend to think that the population is under their full control - and this is their mistake. Nothing is ever for granted, not even for puppet-masters, because you can never be sure, when another puppet master turns against you. Especially in the situation, when everything seems to be spinning out of control and there is a threat that you will loose everything (Russia, China, BRICS etc.) - some of your colleagues in power may start to panick and try to grab a little bit more than what you agreed with them. Well, we shall see. But if I were you, I would vote for him, if possible, just to see if something happens (like a fight between the oligarchs). Perhaps nothing happens, perhaps something will. But it is worth a try. After all, you don't risk anything anymore, as the USA is on its way to hell anyway and it is impossible to make it worse.

Everyone loves 'The Donald' except the people who imagine themselves the Rulers of America with the powers to absolutely mold the opinions and attitudes of the nation, ordinary people admire 'The Donald' because he doesn't bow to the political correct Idols, He doesn't Worship sacred cows, the things 'Political Correctness' requires us to Worship without question, lately to fan fare and anticipation of much condemation, he cast doubt on McCain's hero status, I believe John McCain was a prisoner in the Hanoi Hilton along with many others, an ordeal I have never faced nor would want to face, and yes, he deserves respect and a good pension for that, so do all the others who survived the same ordeal.

Where the principal Hero's story seems possibly to exhibit the  embellishments a good PR man with good connections in the media might add to 'Enhance' the story lies in the sub story, or the story within the story, to whit, the story of how, when he was to be discharged he "refused to leave" so he could stay, the story says, and inspire those who wern't scheduled for release. Does this really hold water, if you were a prisoner in an American institute could you refuse to leave when the authorities were ready to release you? These are the people who tortured him, yet in the end they obey his commandments? Certainly the base story is true, I have no doubt he was there, yet there seems to be a bit of whimsey woven into it for dramatic effect!

USSA deserves the Trump, he is the logical evolution of a political electoral process that is every bit a joke as the Trumpnado is.  Meaningful debate and mature discourse was flushed from the voting process decades ago and devolved into a high schoolesque Rush Limbaugh fueled name calling contest because in the end that's how real the President is to meaningful power and control in the USSA. The he-she who wins the next Presidency is just a party apparachik mouthpiece for its owners, nothing more nothing less. The President is dead and is never coming back, everything we see here is all theatre and that's why the USSA NEEDS THE TRUMPNADO.

I know there is some hard core republicans who refuse to see the fraud of both parties. I will say it again - Donnie is following script just like Ronnie. We all know it will be Bush versus Clinton. People refuse to believe we have a ceasar which is nothing but certain bloodlines who are in power.

Unfortunately, history's examples suggest to us that a lot of totalitarian movements start in exactly the way you just described.

I simply don't trust Trump, any more than any of the other loonies. And the suggestion of deporting 10 million Mexicans who are here by fait accompli is fucking dangerous. The way to get rid of Mexicans is to end the drug war and stop fucking with Mexico. Than people who want to be Mexicans will be able to go home, the ones who stay will be the ones who want to be American, and the problem solves itself.

The only thing which makes sense to me is that he's helping out his buddies the Clinton Clan by disrupting the GOP process of finding a nominee.  What Hill & Co need to actually worry about is Bernie Sanders who ala Ross Perot could end up on the ballot as an independent stealing votes from the Dem side of the ledger. Regardless who or what it is we still get the same result and nothing will change (What happened to Barry's "Hope and Change"? - like that could ever happen!) and the money will continue to control.

The more mainstream media and government hacks call for Trump unqualified, the more people will support Trump.

And people have a point.  Which would be better, Bozo the Clown (Trump) or anyone from the pack of Velociraptors (existing politicians)?  Obviously Trump would be a disaster, but even more obviously he is unlikely to be worse than Clinton, Bush or anyone else in the "official" lineup.

I guess this is what eventually happens when the predators-that-be jigger the system so people never have a choice, only false alternatives.

As I have said before ... Trump is a foil. He is a big government statist who says: "I can run big government better that the other guys".

He is in it for the Buzz and the Platform. He is a lightning rod for Hillary, always a friend of the Clintons, donating to her Senate and Presidential campaigns as well as Bill's. He has donated millions to the Clinton Foundation and his ultimate goal is to run a third party campaign after he loses the Republican nomination.

Since Trump entered the fray, the media no longer needs to cover HRC, they get much more buzz and clicks with Donald.

He will guarantee HRC in DC for eight years ... enjoy all you Trump fans.
