GOP Enters Panic Mode: Des Moines Register Calls For Trump To Withdraw From Presidential Race

Tyler Durden's picture

When Donald Trump announced he would give 2016 another try as a republican presidential candidate, the GOP saw him as a mild nuisance. Little did they appreciate just how big of a "nightmare" he would very soon become, a nightmare which now sees the flamboyant billionaire whose self-reported net worth fluctuates daily with a double digit percentage lead over his closest competitor Scott Walker.

But the biggest mistake the GOP did is they inability to comprehend that either the US public enjoys being trolled, or is just so sick of the left/right paradigm, it will gladly latch on to anyone, even the most farcical, self-lampooning candidate, who promises a break from the old routine which has proven not to work for the common American.

The latest confirmation that the Trump "nightmare" is causing not only sleepless nights but also panic attacks for a GOP that is scrambling to respond to the Donald's juggernaut is not only open attempts at caricature, which however merely feed Trump's ego and push him to troll his accusers even more, but to use the influential Des Moines Register, Iowa's largest newspaper and a critical voice when it comes to endorsing, or panning, presidential candidates in this first caucus state, to call on Donald Trump to drop out of the 2016 presidential race.

Officially the Register's position was simply in escalation to the furor over the real estate magnate's weekend comments about Sen. John McCain's service during the Vietnam War. As Fox reports, in an editorial piece published late Monday, the Register said Trump's comments were "not merely offensive, they were disgraceful. So much so, in fact, that they threaten to derail not just his campaign, but the manner in which we choose our nominees for president."

The paper, the most influential in the first-in-the-nation caucus state, went on to say that if "[Trump] had not already disqualified himself through his attempts to demonize immigrants as rapists and drug dealers, he certainly did so by questioning [McCain's] war record."

Unofficially, it is called throwing everything at the wall and hoping something sticks.

Following this weekend's firestorm, Trump - who clearly enjoys playing the starring role in every social scandal - appeared to back off some of his comments Monday, telling Fox News' Bill O'Reilly that "if there was a misunderstanding, I would totally take that back." However, Trump also said he "used to like [McCain] a lot. I supported him ... but I would love to see him do a much better job taking care of the veterans."

Whether Trump's apology is sincere or not, the nationwide response he got for his comments, coupled with his popularity surge, will merely encourage him. And since for the real estate magnate, advertising is everything, the fact that he has become the only topic of discussion, whether at the water cooler or during the prime time news circuit, expect the Trump-eting to continue to whatever bitter end is in store.

The Register, which broke a 40-year run of backing Democrats in presidential elections by endorsing Mitt Romney in 2012, was the latest voice to pile on Trump for his comments, joining veterans groups, Republican colleagues and President Obama's spokesman, who defended McCain and called on Trump to apologize.

Paul Rieckhoff, founder of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America, said Monday that Trump's "asinine comments" were "an insult to everyone who has ever worn the uniform — and to all Americans."

White House Press Secretary Josh Earnest said veterans "are entitled to an apology."

The bottom line is that the GOP did not take Trump seriously, which is precisely what he wanted. And now that underestimation is costing the GOP dearly, as it scrambles with damage control which merely adds insult to injury, because conventional retaliation that may have worked with any other candidate simply strengthens Trump.

Then again, considering America's artificially polarizing left/right model - all of it controlled by unelected corporations and bailed out Wall Street banks - has failed, and a vote for Trump is not "a vote for Trump" but a vote against America's broken political system, perhaps it is the case that the president the US truly needs, and the one person the American electorate will select, is this guy.

Let's face it. The press, as it has been consolidated as a business, no longer is interested in biting the hand that feeds.

Woodward and Bernstein took down Nixon at his height. The New York Times sold us the Iraq War 2.0 30 years later.

The press is content to just pass along the pablum of the elites without being critical. That's why I call them Presstitutes.

Trump isn't interested in currying favor. He doesn't play by their rules of engagement. He has no interlocutor or handler like the rest of the syphilitic politicians. he speaks his mind without worrying about offending. He isn't fawning to the media elitists. He isn't afraid to take on the Brahmins in his own party.

Even fake Bernie Sanders, "I support Obama. I like Hillary Clinton." Whatever, get lost. Go for the jugular or fuck right off.

Trump's comments resonates with Americans who have seen the Uniparty shutout the majority of Americans on behalf of corporatism. My buddy got hit in a cross walk by a drunk illegal who had no insurance. Instead of being arrested and deported the guy skipped on his bond and disappeared. My friend has had over 250k in healthcare bills since. Send their asses back, no questions asked.

TPP shows that both parties are against the interests of the common man on behalf of the Oligarchy. The only difference is on meaningless social issues like abortion, gay marriage, black lives matter, transgenderism

Joe Sixpack and Sally Housecoat don't give a fuck about that. They want to know who is going to get them a good job, a decent mortgage and a way to avoid debt slavery

Harkin, a Dem US Senator of Iowa for decades, and Grassley, a RepubicProg Senator from Iowa for decades.  Hardly, a conservative constituency.  Those descendants of northern European stock were always overwhelmingly progressive in political leanings.

Are you talking about those die hard indivdualistic conservative farmers from the heartland of the midwest, IOWA?  The ones who can't cash their government welfare checks fast enough for ethanol programs and for "NOT GROWING" crops on land they have?  Those "conservatives"? ;-)  Those same poor farmers that sold their sold to Cargil and Monsanto years ago?  Those Iowans?

Yeah...I grew up an hour away from Iowa.  While it's better than Illinois (which says absolutely nothing), don't count on them to lead any revolution in the near term.

But they do wonderful imitations of farm animals when they suck on the govt/corporatist's tit their whole lives.

That actually seems to be the billionaires' strategy.  Their real terror is of the growing excitement over Bernie Sanders, who drew a crowd of 11,000 in Phoenix a few days ago, then 8,500 in Dallas and 5,500 in Houston.  None of which was reported by the corporate networks - or ZH.

Bernie's name recognition nationally is barely 50% and far fewer have heard him speak.  The race is on to imprint the atrocious Trump on their minds before they do.

We'd be better off voting for Bozo the Clown.

At this point, what fucking difference does it make?

This baby is going down and no amount of reshuffled deck chairs will make a god damned bit of difference.

But in fairness, I like that Trump is finally speaking a little bit of truth. Ron Paul spoke a different truth (big gov/fed/imperialism/blowback) and was ridiculed and ignored, called unelectable, and many people who might have agreed with him gravitated back to mainstream O'romney because they didn't want to vote for a 'loser' or 'throw their vote away' -- that pressure to conform with the herd.

Now, Trump is telling the truth about RINOs and illegal immigration and a lot of working Americans agree.  And  working people are getting sick and fucking tired of political correctness and the victimization industry.

So he's speaking some truth. And working people, who by and large have no representation in Congress or the WH, are nodding their heads in agreement.

But eventually the brainwashing will win out, Trump will fade, and in the interest of not 'throwing away their vote' or 'letting hillary win', they'll vote for whatever cardboard cutout is suggested  by the R party and their media wing.  As the D's will do the same, ruling Sanders unelectable, and throwing in their lot with the most corrupt US politician to appear in a very long time, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

And the status quo will keep on truckin' like it has for most of our lives.

No fly by night media character is upsetting the status quo.  No way no how.

I expected this, here is how it work:

Its about psychology. First there is still a lot of time left, if certain candidate get too much attention too soon (s)he risk of making mistake(longer the period bigger the chance). Also media start to pick on. Same happened to Ron Paul. First they ignored him, then as he gained over 20+% they started picking on him and fabricated "racist" story. Eventually he lost even with persistent supporters.

So obviously first candidate that get too much attention lose and those that kept more in the background till the end have a bigger chance. All it takes then is for them to reappear and say something populist that people will like at the very end and they decimate everyone that was too vocal all the time before. Too much focus for too long is not good.

This is why I think Clinton will win. In fact it wouldnt surprised me if Trump was intentionally set up to lose later and to distract from such as Rand etc. Republican get bad rep, who will people want to vote now? Dems. Which one? Clinton is the most prominent figure and people generally remember her husband as a good president.

Next lines are my own conspiracy theory so feel free to skip it if you find it rubbish:

My belief is that all those big banks and authorities want her to win because she is jewess(as they are). Obama said that he is as close to the jew as it get, but he wasnt good enough - for example when it came to israel/palestine solution etc. They painted him as anti-israeli. So if the one that is "as close to the jew as it get" is not enough, who do you put on the throne? Real jew. Which also close the circle of them having power in all important posts. FED, treasury, IMF etc... and now also president of most powerful nation.

Remember how Obama became monarch and got himself all the power like starting a war without need of congress etc.? So IMO he merely PREPARED the ground for the next president. And the next president will have a full power of rule, basically monarch. Next president that will be the jew. This is how they secretly prepared ground for their full domination. Now, I am not against jews per se, I do have many good friends but this is pretty clear to me here, that at least those in power must have these intentions. And Trump....  he probably only helped them to distract public from others that could pose a real threat later. He will NOT win elections, mark my words today.

I know Bill Mahler propagate her. Normally I like the guy but his propaganda and interest is clear here. His argument was that after "black" president it would be nice to have a "woman" to finish a image of US "democracy". So he wants her because she is woman, not whether she is good or have a negotiate skill to be a president(which she dont and is in fact one of worst for US relations). Of course, real true reason is that Bill Mahler, the jew, want one of their own on the post.

Its amazing to see that Americans actually think the next president will make a difference.   Only way they could make a difference is if they dumped Israel and label them a terrorist state but you know that will never happen.

In case you haven't notice.  ALL the candidates from both parties always say  'we must support Israel''.   As if it is some kind of mandatory thing.  A little shitty country of fucking lying, thieving psychopaths and candidates always have to mention them.

As Dr. Paul Craig Roberts states '''The USA is controlled lock, stock and barrel by the Zionists.
