Has The Land War Begun: Turkish Tanks Are Firing Into Syria

Tyler Durden's picture

Update, from the horse's mouth: Turkey admits 4 tanks entered Syria to use something called a "retaliation right":

After Monday's tragic terrorist attack in the Turkish town of Suruc, just across from the Syrian border and kilometers away from ISIS-controlled Kobani, which left dozens dead in what authorities claim was due to an ISIS-linked 20 yhear old suicide bomber, hostilities have dramatically escalated in the past few days culminating with news that one Turkish soldier killed and one was wounded in border province of Kilis by gunfire from Syria, according to state-run Anadolu Agency reports.

According to the Guardian, "one Turkish solider has been killed and another wounded in clashes with Islamic State across the Syrian border, a senior Turkish official said. The clashes continued as the Turkish army returned fire on the militants in Syria. Earlier, a Turkish police officer was shot and killed and a second wounded in the mainly Kurdish city of Diyarbakir. Violence along Turkey’s 560-mile (900km) border with Syria has spiked in recent days, beginning with a suicide bombing blamed on Isis in the town of Suruç on Monday. The Diyarbakir shooting came a day after two police officers were killed in an attack in Ceylanpinar on the Syrian border claimed by militants from the Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK)"

Bloomberg added that Turkish forces returned fire across the border, killing an Islamic State militant, and thatt clashes across border region continue, Anadolu says in story published at 5:08pm Istanbul time.

Then DHA reported moments ago, that Turkish Armed Forces have begun shooting into Syrian territory. From DHA, google translated:

Event today at 16:00 as the Turkish Armed Forces are massing his time occurred in the border line. Isidor's control of the territory in Syria opened fire on the soldiers at a time. The soldiers also reciprocates by conflict.

Isidor first opened fire from the region, one non-commissioned officer killed, while four soldiers were wounded. The wounded soldiers were brought to Kilis State Hospital for treatment. Increased security measures at the border on the event.

And indeed, as the following clip from Turkey's DHA news agency shows, one may wonder if NATO-member Turkey's land invasion of Syria, which many have said was long overdue following months of rhetoric and belligerent posturing, under the pretext of ISIS "liberation", has just begun.

Turkish Tanks Are Firing Into Syria

Turkey had always been at war with Syria.  Now it becomes official

The following examples show the extent of Turkish involvement in the war on Syria:

–Turkey hosts the Political and Military Headquarters of the armed opposition. Most of the political leaders are former Syrians who have not lived there for decades.

–Turkey provides home base for armed opposition leaders. As quoted in the Vice News video “Syria: Wolves of the Valley”: “Most of the commanders actually live in Turkey and commute in to the fighting when necessary.”

–Turkey’s intelligence agency MIT has provided its own trucks for shipping huge quantities of weapons and ammunition to Syrian armed opposition groups. According to court testimony, they made at least 2,000 trips to Syria.

Turkey is suspected of supplying the chemical weapons used in Ghouta in August 2013 as reported by Seymour Hersh here. In May 2013, Nusra fighters were arrested in possession of sarin but quickly and quietly released by Turkish authorities.

Turkey’s foreign minister, top spy chief and senior military official were secretly recorded plotting an incident to justify Turkish military strikes against Syria. A sensational recording of the meeting was publicized, exposing the plot in advance and likely preventing it from proceeding.

–Turkey has provided direct aid and support to attacking insurgents. When insurgents attacked Kassab Syria on the border in spring 2014, Turkey provided backup military support and ambulances for injured fighters. Turkey shot down a Syrian jet fighter that was attacking the invading insurgents. The plane landed 7 kilometers inside Syrian territory, suggesting that Turkish claims it was in Turkish air space are likely untrue.

Turkey has recently increased its coordination with Saudi Arabia and Qatar.

We must be ready as a nation to stand by our Turkish allies, should they need assistance in their operations against Isis. My heart goes out to the innocent Syrians who are caught between Assad and his use of chemical weapons, and ISIS with their extreme form of Islam that in no way represents the beliefs of the average muslim. On the one hand, we must continue to wage war against terrorism in the Milddle East and fight for stability and peace in the region, but at the same time we must be careful not to succum to Islamaphobia and extreme nationalism. We need to work together with our allies to achieve our strategic goals in the Middle East, while fostering a culture of tolerance and multiculturalism at home.

Seriously Tyler? The Guardian? Bloomberg? Why not just check with the Jerusalem Post or Times of Israel?

Your article reads like Turkey is defending itself against ISIS! That's f'king CRAZY - they're haboring ISIS and directly (not covertly) supporting ISIS with personnel, supplies, vehicles and ammuntion. ISIS WOULD CEASE TO EXIST WITHOUT TURKEY - never mind the U.S. clownfuckery. You should be a little more excited about how close we are to WWIII.

Exaggeration? The Turkish government is God damn evil incarnate, but Turkey is a member of NATO and Turkey hates Assad. Turkey, for all practical purposes, is the U.S. (and England's - to some degree) NORTHCOM for their Syrian Topple-Assad War. Everything was going as planned until some pissed off Rojava Kurds showed up. Oh, did I mention Russia, China, Iraq and Iran are not particularly fond of ZATO's latest lame-assed scheme to invade Syria?

Rojava (Syrian or Western Kurds) don't have any oil or anything else. Their scratch farmers. They were going to be the sacrifical lambs in Turkey's invasion of Syria via ISIS. A funny thing happened, though. The Rojava Kurds started kicking ISIS ass - out of Kobane, out of Tel Abyd, and most recently out of the entire canton. The Rojava Kurds have always held on to a portion of Northwestern Syria in the Afrin canton. If the Kobane and Afrin regions are connected, almost the entire Turkish border in Syria will be in Kurdish control. That's SYRIAN land under Kurdish control. Turkey doesn't have a God damn thing to say about it - it's none of their business.

Note the Rojava Kurds are not fighting Turkey - they're mostly just trying to avoid being slaughtered by them. But linking to two Kurdish regions would threaten to cut Turkey's supply lines to ISIS. The Kurds have the yellow areas on this map. See the grey areas? That's how Turkey get's shit to ISIS and al Nusra, and they're going full-retard that their ISIS/al Nusra supply lines are going to be gone if the Kurds continue to kick their ass.

In your article, Tyler, you're parroting the ZATO bullshit about a non-existant Turkish-ISIS conflict - a lie that is being spewed specifically to justify a Turkish incursion into Syria to keep their ISIS/al Nusra supply lines open. At the expense of ten thousand or so dead Kurds. Do you seriously not see the fact that the Guardian and Bloomberg stenographers are creating this fake conflict for public consumption?

Where the fuck is your outrage that ZATO member Turkey is openly supplying ISIS and is willing to 1) invade Syria to keep supplying them and 2) kill as many Rojava Kurds as necessary to keep their supply lines IN SYRIA open for business?

And while this drama plays out in the North, you can be sure that Israel is planning their next Syrian/Lebanese land-grab in the South.

“Greater Israel” or “Greater Khazaria”?
"Divide and conquer is an age-old strategy for empire-builders. Drive your opponents to fight among themselves, then pillage and subjugate them. Josef Stalin successfully employed this method in World War II, with the fawning complicity of Winston Churchill and Franklin Roosevelt. Now the Zionists—and their American lackeys—are doing the same to establish Israeli hegemony throughout the Middle East and North Africa. And it was long planned. But is the intention merely for “Greater Israel”—“from the Nile to the Euphrates,” as Theodor Herzl proclaimed—or is this the first step toward a world empire we should call “Greater Khazaria”?

In 1982, the World Zionist Organization’s Department of Information, their propaganda arm, published “A Strategy for Israel in the Nineteen Eighties,” by Oded Yinon. This “Yinon Plan” has been followed for decades by Israel in order to establish “Greater Israel.” ... "

Timur knew best: he razed Baghdad and Damascus to the ground, dragged away useful artisans to his capital, while slaying every man, woman, and child, and building towers of skulls. He threw the Turkish sultan into an iron cage and kept him as a pet. Then he went to Moscow and did more of the same. He planned on gracing China with his brand of statesmanship, but had a stroke along the way. As Edith Bunker sang,

Turkey played a major role in the creation of ISIS:

ISIS: The jihadist movement stamped “Made in America”

For three years, the US, along with the Gulf states and Turkey, poured billions into “opposition” groups, supposedly to unnamed “moderates,” but in reality to Al Qaeda-linked Sunni groups such as al-Nusra and ISIS to spearhead a sectarian war. The US, Turkey and Jordan have operated a base in Jordan where US instructors trained dozens of ISIS members. In an article last year, the New York Times confirmed that the CIA assisted Arab governments and Turkey by airlifting weaponry to these groups in Jordan and Turkey. The Guardian reported last March that British and French instructors were also involved.

Other ISIS members were trained near Incirlik Air Base near Adana, Turkey, where US forces are based. After completing their training, they went to Syria and later Iraq.

Excellent post!

Many Turks are angry over the ISIS bombing because they accuse Turkish leaders of supporting ISIS by the back door. Using ISIS to create conditions favorable to Turkish policies. It is a known fact that anti Assad Jihadist Armies have been armed and trained in Turkey, and have base camps there. ISIS gets many recruites direct from these camps. Videos and photos showing direct peaceful talks between Turkish military and ISIS in Syria exist. Taken right at the border.

There won't be no land war, or invasion. It is not our goal. We want to weaken ISIS and Assad at the same time and will periodically and covertly arm the side in danger of losing. If we wanted to weaken ISIS, then why did we arm them in the first place?  It seems the goal all along was to destabilize the region and lure Iran into a direct conflict via a proxy war with Syria and forcing them to honor their mutual defense treaty.  The question now is, will Assad make welcome the Turks or repel them.  I don't think the Turks will stop with ISIS.  They'll go strait after Assad and the mainstream media will try to tie ISIS to Assad.  People who have been paying attention will find this laughable.

ISIS could be stopped dead in its tracks very easily. Just destroy the limited supply routes from Turkey. No food, fuel, ammo, other than what can be looted locally. Then bomb the shit out of them when they grind to a halt. That this is not done speaks volumes about the US relationship to ISIS. It is clearly a US proxy doing whatever the US wants done.

UN Report Reveals How Israel is Coordinating with ISIS Militants Inside Syria

Last month Israel launched its sixth airstrike inside Syria in the last 18 months, which is described as a ‘targeted killing’ against Hezbollah, whom Tel Aviv maintains is backed by their sworn enemy Iran – which leader Benjamin Netanyahu claims, affords Israel the right to kill them at any time, or any place. Back in 2013, the Assad government in Damascus invited Lebanese Hezbollah militia into Syria to help eliminate terrorists in Syria, and now the uncomfortable reality is finally surfacing – that Israel has been picking off Syrian military and Hezbollah targets who are trying to fight-off ISIS, al Qaeda and al Nusra terrorists – which means that Israel is actually helping ISIS.

the UN report identified what the Syrians label a crossing point of forces between Israel and ISIS, a point of concern brought before the UN Security Council. – See more at: http://yournewswire.com/un-proven-ties-between-isis-and-israel/#sthash.d...

The UN report identified what the Syrians label a crossing point of forces between Israel and ISIS, a point of concern brought before the UN Security Council.”

According to the United Nations Documents on UNDOF (official UN source) Israeli interactions with the Syrian rebels have been documented. If the international community were to pull-up Israel on this fact, they would do what Washington, Saudi Arabia and others have done – which is claim they are only dealing with the fictional “moderate rebels” – most of whom have been shown time and time again – to be defecting over to ISIS.

There is strong evidence to support the idea that the US armed ISIS when they fled into Syria.  Back then, they were "moderates" fighting against Assad.  This was not openly reported and was even denied early on but the CIA did arm them, trained them, and Panetta later admitted to arming them.

The US does appear to be attacking ISIS now, or at least uses ISIS to justify the attacks inside Syria.  But have they really gone after ISIS or are they just trying to destabilize the region.  Evidence suggests the latter as ISIS is now well armed, and continues to sell oil openly on the black market (if they were serious, the first thing they'd do is cut off their funding).  By picking off a few at a time, it only stirrs up the hornets nest and pisses them off even more.  Even Frontline has reported that so called "moderate" rebels in Syria are now leaning on the side of ISIS.  They are getting stronger, not weaker.

The sad truth is ISIS was non existent until we started arming them.  This may come back to haunt us.

There are probably 2, 3, even 5 or 6 ISISes.

The atrocities committed by the terror group ISIS are so horrific that a high-profile al Qaeda member, an American citizen, purportedly addressed the group directly in a new al Qaeda publication and lectured them that if they keep it up, Allah will not grant them paradise in the afterlife.

“My dear brothers: While no one can deny the considerable strength and prowess of the Islamic State group [ISIS] in military terms, at the same time, the crimes it has committed against Muslims cannot simply be overlooked or forgotten with time, because in Islam there is no statute of limitations,” the late Adam Gadahn said, according to an al Qaeda magazine published recently online. “And if these wrongs are not brought to an end and rectified here in this world, then a severe punishment has been promised both for those who committed them as well as those who encouraged, condoned or justified them, even if from behind a computer or mobile phone thousands of miles away.”

Seeking War to the End of the World

Exclusive: Despite the disastrous Iraq War, neocons still dominate Official Washington’s inside-outside game, government policymakers coordinating with think-tank opinion leaders to keep world tensions high and money flowing to military projects, a process personified by Robert Kagan and Victoria Nuland, says Robert Parry.

https://consortiumnews.com/2015/07/19/seeking-war-to-the-end-of-the-world/

"Much of this “strategy” is personified by a single Washington power couple: arch-neocon Robert Kagan, a co-founder of the Project for the New American Century and an early advocate of the Iraq War, and his wife, Assistant Secretary of State for European Affairs Victoria Nuland, who engineered last year’s coup in Ukraine that started a nasty civil war and created a confrontation between nuclear-armed United States and Russia.

Kagan, who cut his teeth as a propaganda specialist in support of the Reagan administration’s brutal Central American policies in the 1980s, is now a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution and a contributing columnist to The Washington Post’s neocon-dominated opinion pages.

On Friday, Kagan’s column baited the Republican Party to do more than just object to President Barack Obama’s Iranian nuclear deal. Kagan called for an all-out commitment to neoconservative goals, including military escalations in the Middle East, belligerence toward Russia and casting aside fiscal discipline in favor of funneling tens of billions of new dollars to the Pentagon.

Kagan also showed how the neocons’ world view remains the conventional wisdom of Official Washington despite their disastrous Iraq War. The neocon narrative gets repeated over and over in the mainstream media no matter how delusional it is. ..."

Obama's first foreign act was to bow to the King of Saudi Arabia and appologize for US aggression.

Obama leds a coalition to bomb and protect Lybian citizens and the country falls to terrorists.

Obama does nothing to protect what has ended up being 300,000+ lost lives in Syria, opens to flood gates for ISIS opening pandora's box.

These events aren't coincidence or lack of foreign strategy, THEY ARE PART OF HIS STRATEGY.

I watched once local documentary about him. They said before his rule country was like 80+% illiterate, after he took power numbers basically switched opposite. Also, when you wanted to start some business, for example farm, you would receive goats from the country etc. When you married, you would receive one time gift from the country which I think was around 10000$(or 1000$ not sure anymore). Oil for a car was like few cents and many more things.

Anyway after I saw that documentary, I realized he was a great man and most of those accusations were lies. And I agree with him, saudies are compare to him savage monkeys.

What used to surprise me is that Ghaddaffis ministers who we flew around a lot , always wore US flag pins on their lapels.

Libya was all for the war on terror after 911.

But in December of 2010, Ghaddaffi announced he would be selling oil in Euros and wanted to create a gold backed Dinar.

Well, you know the rest of the story.

CIA went into Ben-Ghazi, always a hot bed of snakes in the grass (according to my Libyan friends in Tripoli) and started stirring the pot.

While working in Libya I got to see first hand how their democracy works  ,Its called the Jamariyah.  each neighborhood and region had its elected senators and reps and met every 3 months for 4 or 5 days.  There they would do planning and hash out things.  The only person who they couldn't criticize was Ghaddaffi.  For the rest, Libya was quite free, safe and I could do what I wanted and go where I wanted.  Never saw weapons.

Now, according to my friends in Tripoli,  everyone is scared shitless because the crazies that took over and all are armed and shoot people at will.  He says everyone locks them selves in house at night.

Fully agree that the fate of Gaddafi and Libya were sealed off when he decided to sell oil in euro and threw out his idea of gold-backed dinar creation for the North African union... this man was naive for doing those moves in the absence of any serious nuke head deterrence, he should have learned the text book methods of the Empire of Chaos (borrowing the terms from Pepe Escobar) after being so many decades in power! His dumbness triggered the release of The 'hellbound' Terminator...

Poor Syria. Maybe they should just call Lloyd and Jamie and tell them to send in their boys, hook up their siphons and find a local coke dealer.

Maybe then they could catch a break.

Thank goodness the CIA has not lost it's touch for false flag attacks. Good one for the spooks

Turkey, along with other NATO countries and GCC have been supporting ISIS/ISIL/Daesh, employing the philosophy that the enemy of my enemy is my friend. It was only a question of time before ISIS turned on Turkey.  The US/NATO war theater now extends from the Levant, to Caspian Basin, Persian Gulf, China Sea, Indian Ocean, Horn of Africa, the Maghreb, Eastern Europe and Russian border. This may well be the beginning of WWIII.

If it "is" WWIII beginning, how would you see the sides "lining up"?  I'm just curious of opinions here.  It's just not clear to me who would be the proverbial "Axis" or "Allies" in this one.
