Smithsonian Launches Crowdfunding Campaign to Restore Neil Armstrong’s Spacesuit
On Monday, the 46th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing, the Smithsonian launched its first crowdfunding campaign they’re calling “Reboot the Suit” to conserve, digitize, and display Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit that he wore on the moon. The museum has raised over 86 percent of its $500,000 goal since the launch of the campaign.
The campaign to restore Armstrong’s suit is the first in a year-long partnership with the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. Museum officials hope to use the platform to target new donors to the Smithsonian Institution, which receives over $800 million in federal funds every year – about 62 percent of its $1.3 billion budget. Restoration of the suit is not covered by federal appropriated funds, hence another reason to crowdfund the project. The Smithsonian is also in the middle of a seven year, 1.5 billion fundraising campaign; however, officials do not expect their crowdfunding efforts to compete with that or other fundraising campaigns.
The Smithsonian plans to use the funds to preserve the suit, digitize it via 3D scanning, photogrammetry, chemical analysis, CT scanning, and other means, and have it ready to display on the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in 2019.
Supporters of the campaign are eligible to receive rewards for their tax deductible donations ranging from digital posters to tours of the Emil Buehler Conservation Lab at the Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center in Chantilly, VA to see the suit in person. It’s also been rumored that donations over $15,000 will give you the chance to publicly insult Buzz Aldrin and have him punch you in the face à la Bart Sibrel.

I haven't been here since I was a kid and don't recall if there was an optional payment for admission. If not they should have one like the Museum of Natural History so they can get extra funds for whatever.
I have spent many, many day's browsing the multiple museum complex that comprises the Smithsoniam Institution. It is, Hands Down, The Very Best of Any Institution of Any kind that exists in Washington D.C.! Even though "crowdfunding" is working, you would have them treat it like Disneyland?

Regardless of whether it happened or not, in a free market, I say good for the Smithsonian going the crowdfunding route. Better to get the $$$ from voluntary donors (whether you think said donors are idiots or not is irrelevant) than to get the $$$ from me at the point of gun. Their tax-based funding should go to zero and the whole damn thing should be crowdfunded.

At least with the "Moon Landing" not even a space suit got harmed during the filming, whereas millions have died because of 911 and thousands are currently dying because of MH17.

In the recent film Interstellar, it's mentioned that the Apollo program was a brilliant propaganda piece to bankrupt the Soviet Union. Interesting how they condition the populace towards the truth by hinting at it first in fiction.

kch, I think it's great that you are looking into this but I can tell you the situation is infinitely more complex. When you look into Apollo you are in a CIA Hall of Mirrors. There are no quick or simple answers. The situation requires extensive study.
The project was a complete success. It bankrupted the Soviet Union. It's completely irrelevent if the fucking thing got to moon or not , it was the spin that was important at the time and the spin worked.

This topic is a perfect example of the above statement.
Here's the boil down... and I am an expert on this subject.
1 -The USA went to the moon. But they used classified technology i.e. anti- grav propulsion at least on the L.E.M. This can be verified by viewing the film of the ascent stage of the L.E.M as it lifts off as imaged by the remote controlled T.V. camera on the Lunar Rover in the "J" series missions. (15-17) They are supposedly burning hypergolic fuel yet upon lift-off there is nothing coming out of the rocket nozzle.
2- The first landing of July 20, 1969 was met by three immense spacecraft in the distance that watched the Eagle as it made its landing. This is according to Maurice Chatelein, the Chief Electrical Engineer for North American Aviation who oversaw the design, construction, and running of the Apollo communications network for NASA. Chatelein heard this from Armstrong himself at a high level post Apollo NASA scientific conference. According to Chatelein Armstrong stated that they were "warned off" by our lunar neighbors. This warning may help to explain the sudden 10 minute loss of the T.V. signal after the Apollo 11 landing. Chatlein also stated that there was a 'switch' built into the system whereby they could divert the incoming signals directly to "Langley."
3- The moon is and has always been occupied both on and below the surface by multiple advanced civilizations.
4- All the film shown to the public was subject to intense censorship from airbrushing photos (Much of which was done in Building 8, at NASA Houston) to falsifying some events for public consumption at Norton AFB where in 1966 NASA spent 250 million dollars to build the worlds largest sound stage. Of the 22,216 Hasselblad photos taken on the surface a few photos got through that were uncensored or at least less censored. In those photos can be seen bootprints of a different size and tread pattern next to U.S. astronaut boot prints. In photo number 20,900 taken on December 12, 1972 an individual standing next to a 'boulder' who NASA purports to be Harrison Schmitt is wearing a strange helmet which is clearly not a U.S. astronaut helmet. His holstered camera is an illusion and is not a Hasselblad camera. The individual in 20,900 is no more than four feet tall.
5-With the exception of Armstrong and Harrison Schmitt, all Apollo astronauts were active US military officers. They were/are all under orders to keep their mouth shut until the day they die/died. Make no mistake these were military missions candy coated for the public.
6- Officially Apollo returned 972 pounds of rock and dust samples for scientific study. The reality was one of their primary purposes was to recover advanced technology in the form of archeological artifacts from the Lunar surface. Among other things, they brought back nano technology contained in the Lunar Regolith.
7- By 1970 both high level American and Russian scientists including top intelligence people were aware that the 'Moon' was not natural but the remnants of an incredibly ancient artificial structure.

There wasn't a TV signal until Armstrong was about to exit the LEM.
And my statement is consistent with that. (IIRC) The interruption occurred sometime after Armstrong was on the surface.

In a circa 1967 report NASA stated that professional astronomers had observed what appeared to be a " Giant hand holding up a giant sword on top of the central peak of the crater Eratosthenes." I'd go look it up and link to it but most of these commenters aren't worth the time. The video of the anti-grav liftoff of the L.E.M. is available online. Photo 20,900 is available online. You would think these morons would examine the evidence before shooting off their mouths... but then again that is why they are morons.

Why in the world is NASA trying to re-invent the wheel? Why must NASA "solve" the radiation problem BEFORE getting humans through the Van Allen Belts when Apollo already did that a half century ago? Hell, those guys even packed frickin' lunar modules and dune buggies through there...

Yes. It's called the Orion program, and it's presently stumbling along much like the ISS program. Last December 14, Orion successfully achieved a 3,600-mile apogee -- right into the belly of the V.A.B. -- with a module carrying a suite of sensors to determine the feasibility of human flight beyond low-earth orbit. Additionally, challenges associated with much higher and hotter reentry speeds and temperatures have to be solved. The requisite radiation and thermal shielding associated with penetrating this new frontier has resulted in a far heavier module than what the Apollo crew had, and thus requires the development of new rockets (the "SLS") far more powerful than the Saturn series.
