French Police Open Fire On Car Trying To Crash Tour de France Barricades

Tyler Durden's picture

In a surprising development ahead of today's final stage of the Tour de France, earlier today Paris police opened fire on a car that tried to crash a barricade set up on Place de la Concorde ahead of the final arrival of the Tour de France cycling race, France 24 reports citing a police official.

The shooting incident took place as the French capital is on maximum alert to welcome the final stage of the Tour de France.

Luc Poignant, a spokesman with the SGP police union, said officers were finishing setting up the barricades for the race when the car tried to crash through the barriers. Officers opened fire on the car, which ultimately drove away.

The Place de la Concorde is located near several key official buildings, such as the Élysee palace or the US embassy in Paris.

According to French BFMTV, the car was traveling at a high speed when crashed into another vehicle before smashing the protection fences installed on the Place de la Concorde for the final leg of the Tour de France race, according to the broadcaster. French police then opened fire on the car, but failed to stop the vehicle.

The French media further adds that the incident took place around 10am BST, while the car driven by the suspects was a black Renault.

The car escaped with its two occupants apparently unharmed, according to Poignant. A search is underway for the suspects and a warrant has been issued for the driver's arrest.

The Guardian adds that according to the French police the incident was neither aimed at the cycling race nor was terror-related. At least that is the narrative as of this moment. It may well change in the coming hours.

The final stage of the Tour de France is due to begin at 4:35 pm (14:35 GMT), leaving from Sevres, a town southwest of Paris. The riders are then due to arrive in the French capital at around 5:30 pm (15:30 GMT and do 10 laps around the Champs-Elysees before finishing at Place de la Concorde at about 7 pm (17:00 GMT).

I'm impressed the police opened fire and didn't (immediately) kill someone. If only we could be so lucky over here in the US. BTW I love the passive ''voice' used in these stories. The car drove away. No, the car was driven away by (presumably) a human. They were shooting at the human in the car, not at the car.

"invisible touch" knows nothing of professional cycling which is perhaps the most physically grueling endurance sport one can engage in. The legs aren't shaved for speed and not all are shaved but when they are it's for first aid ie easier to treat wounds and easier to keep band-aids on. By the way asshole, one leg of any of the Tour cyclists has more muscle than your entire body.

If professional cycling were so easy to do why do you think assholes the world over are trying to dope their teams for the Tour de France title? Why? Because it's one of the most difficult titles to win.

And kudos to the French police for not spraying bullets into innocent bystanders.

If you don't appreciate France fuck off: va te faire foutre.

The only thing definitive here, is that your ESL skillz need improvement.

Ever had layers of skin burned away, skidding across the asphalt on your ass at 35 MPH? Ever had to scrub little bits of government roads out of the resulting burn area? Ever wake up with sheets sticking to that burn area?

You know why patients are shaved before surgery, right? Infection? Shaved legs are not about speed, it's about road rash you terminal twit. It is easier to clean, and reduces risk of road infection.

Ever had piss, soda, and god knows what else thrown at you? Been hit by a car? Hit by a cop car? Eaten by a pothole in the gummin roads? Ever be eaten by a mountain lion?

Well...that is cycling. Not Tour de France, not racing...that's JRA on a saturday morning ride. Oh...and you don't need fucking government permission to do it on government roads. No ID, no license plate, no insurance.

Put that in your juice box and suck it, Junior.

If I had a car accident and then someone started shooting, I'd drive away too.  Some cops are pretty brainless.

Some years ago, a young women I knew was alone at night in a rural area with a car tailgating her. She sped up to escape, but the car kept getting closer. Scared, she keep going faster and faster, but the car following her. Eventually turned into a police chase and she stopped. Yup it was some idiot cop instigating all that  by tailgating. They let her go, but today, they'd probably shoot her dead as a "terrorist".

Hollande will use that as excuse to bomb Syria? After all Turkey has joined war in Syria:

Turkey Joins US War in Syria

For a long time, Ankara had refrained from supporting the US-led war, ostensibly aimed against the Islamic State in Syria (ISIS), insisting on a policy aimed at toppling the government of President Bashar al-Assad and covertly supporting ISIS, both against the Syrian regime and against Kurdish nationalists.

On Wednesday, however, US President Barack Obama and Turkish President Tayyip Erdo?an agreed in a phone call to work together to secure the Turkish-Syrian border and fight against ISIS.

On Thursday, US officials announced an agreement allowing the US to carry out aerial attacks on IS positions from Turkish air bases at ?ncirlik and Diyarbakir. The Turkish government also agreed on the arming of the US Predator drones being launched from the ?ncirlik air base.

According to the Turkish newspaper Hurriyet Daily News, the deal, treated by the Turkish side as a “secret cabinet decree,” also includes plans for a “buffer zone” in northern Syria, something Ankara has long demanded as a means of escalating the war for regime change in Syria.

@VinceFostersGhost

Ah, the 'ol French surrender jokes !

All this ugly disdain and nasty jokes come from the firm refusal of the French to join America in Irak, in 2003.

Since France refused to go to Iraq, American warmongers and neo-cons made French army look like cowards – as a punishment.

But History has proved the French were right, and that the WMD were only a dirty trick to serve as a pretext.

Nevertheless, the hate of American warmongers against France remains still there, well alive, even in ZH.

This stale hate still shows through "innocent good jokes" about the “surrender monkeys” and their white flags

As for the rest, the French can be proud of their Military History:

According to the British historian Niall Ferguson, since 387 BC, France has fought 168 major wars against such badasses as the Roman Empire, the British Army and the Turkish forces. Their track record isn't too shabby, either: They've won 109, lost 49 and drawn 10 times.

This makes France the most successful military power in European history - in terms of number of fought and won …

The French have succeeded to conquer and guard the largest country in Europe.

There are so many wonderful places and people around the world and different aspects of cultures and societies to learn about. You would laugh if you saw the length of my prospective travel and itinerary list. I hope have the chance to take them all in during my lifetime.

It is a shame these events take away focus from things like the scenery, culture and history of France that are highlighted in the race. The craftsmanship and beauty of the ceramics from Sèvres are outstanding. And I'll add the ceramics museum to my travel itinerary list for the future.

Energy flows where attention goes. Just like this event if we focus energy on the future impending financial crash that is taking away from energy and efforts to avert it. I understand the current situation and these events. The financial crash doesn't need to continue on the current path but balance maintained until a solution can be is complete.

Probably not a terrorist.  If you have ever driven in Paris, you would realize that it was probably a typical french driver.

And in Malmö, Sweden:

Which brought quick comment from Haaretz:

And here is the best part:

A Country Like Hungary Should Have Never Been EU Member – Swedish MEP

(Should not be EU member for Hungarians refusal to accept thousands of non-European, mostly Muslim, economic refugees)

The car escaped. Great. What are we all paying super double bonus hazardous duty pay for? For what purpose is the constabulary being militarized, everywhere? Apparently not to secure the public...

Is somebody trying to convince Europe that they are being attacked?

Of course the people don't want war. But after all, it's the leaders of the country who determine the policy, and it's always a simple matter to drag the people along whether it's a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism, and exposing the country to greater danger. - Herman Goering
