I guess it all depends on your perspective. For right or wrong, Iran has not been an ally, but a foe for many years. They have made no real overture for peace and have made significant contributions AGAINST every cause we have had.
Now we may agree that many of our causes may be misdirected, stupid or evil, but do not tell me that Iran is our friend and only has interest in peace.
They, like America and like Israel and every other nation out there, care about themselves and their agendas.
I am sorry that I can't break everything down into pro or anti Israel. It is appealing in its simplicity and is well documented by many who feel the same. While I've had disagreements with him in the past over Ukraine, Russia, Syria, and Iran, I cannot agree with an assessment of stupidity.
We all have our blind spots. I've known for decades that the US government is filled with shysters and hypocrites and that the US mass media place higher importance on compliance and career advancement than they do on accuracy and integrity. It wasn't until the last dozen or so years, though, that I came to understand that the whole concept of Americaland® that I was brought up with since childhood is nothing more than an illusion - a slick, all-encompassing Madison Avenue marketing campaign.
Like nmewn, I used to believe that the Soviet Union was the evil empire bent on world domination; that Iran was run by irrational religious extremists bent on destroying everything good and was populated by people that hated America for no good reason; that until 1989 eastern Europe lived under brutal dictatorship and its citizens were little more than slaves; and that the US was a principled nation that supported liberty, justice, human rights, and the rule of law, was the good guy that liberated the oppressed, and was beloved by everyone that wasn't evil.
That stuff was hammered into us from the day we were first sat in front of a television, and was reinforced by years of school, entertainment, and pop culture. It's not easy to shake it off. Some people never do, and others, like myself, only manage to do so in stages. The older I get, the more I learn that everything I thought I knew is simply wrong. While I'd personally rather know the truth, it's not a pleasant process, as each new discovery is filled with heartache and betrayal, and I can empathize with those who'd rather not know.
The founding fathers of America are not the people from the period of the Revolutionary War, and the Constitution is not the law of the land. America's founding fathers were the group of men that met on Jeckyl Island a little over a hundred years ago, as well as people like Edward Bernays, and the supreme law of the land is the charter of the Federal Reserve.

So there is really no deal here. Iran will be a nuclear power and dominate the region until war breaks out between shia sunni. The Obama administration just wants to appear to have "peace in our time" when in reality the Iranians won this chess match some time ago.
