A Disaffected Democrat Deplores His Potemkin Party Of Populism

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by James Kunstler via Kunstler.com,

How many of you brooding on the dreadful prospect of Hillary have chanced to survey what remains of Democratic Party (cough cough) leadership in the background of Her Royal Inevitableness? Nothing is the answer. Zip. Nobody. A vacuum. There is no Democratic Party anymore. There are no figures of gravitas anywhere to be found, no ideas really suited to the American prospect, nothing with the will to oppose the lumbering parasitic corporatocracy that is doing little more than cluttering up this moment in history while it sucks the last dregs of value from our society.

I say this as a lifelong registered Democrat but a completely disaffected one — who regards the Republican opposition as the mere errand boy of the above-named lumbering parasitic corporatocracy. Readers are surely chafing to insert that the Democrats have been no less errand boys (and girls) for the same disgusting zeitgeist, and they are surely correct in the case of Hillary, and indeed of the current President.

Readers are surely also chafing to insert that there is Bernie Sanders, climbing in the opinion polls, disdaining Wall Street money, denouncing the current disposition of things with the old union hall surliness we’ve grown to know and love. I’m grateful that Bernie is in the race, that he’s framing an argument against Ms. It’s My Turn. I just don’t happen to think that Bernie gets what the country — indeed what all of techno-industrial society — is really up against, namely a long emergency of economic contraction and collapse.

These circumstances require a very different agenda than just an I Dreamed I Saw Joe Hill redistributionist scheme. Lively as Bernie is, I don’t think he offers much beyond that, as if cadging a little more tax money out of WalMart, General Mills, and Exxon-Mobil will fix what is ailing this sad-ass polity. The heart of the matter is that our way of life has shot its wad and now we have to live very differently. Almost nobody wants to even try to think about this.

I hugely resent the fact that the Democratic Party puts its time and energy into the stupid sexual politics of the day when it should be working on issues such as re-localizing commercial economies (rebuilding Main Streets), reforming agriculture to avoid the total collapse of corporate-industrial farming, and fixing the passenger rail system so people will have some way to get around the country when happy Motoring dies (along with commercial aviation).

The “to do” list for rearranging the basic systems of daily life in America is long and loaded with opportunity. Every system that is retooled contains jobs and social roles for people who have been shut out of the economy for two generations. If we do everything we can to promote smaller-scaled local farming, there will be plenty of work for lesser-skilled people to do and get paid for. Saying goodbye to the tyranny of Big Box commerce would open up vast vocational opportunities in reconstructed local and regional networks of commerce, especially for young people interested in running their own business. We need to prepare for localized clinic-style medicine (in opposition to the continuing amalgamation and gigantization of hospitals, with its handmaidens of Big Pharma and the insurance rackets). The train system has got to be reborn as a true public utility. Just about every other civilized country is already demonstrating how that is done — it’s not that difficult and it would employ a lot of people at every level. That is what the agenda of a truly progressive political party should be at this moment in history.

That Democrats even tolerate the existence of evil entities like WalMart is an argument for ideological bankruptcy of the party. Democratic Presidents from Carter to Clinton to Obama could have used the Department of Justice and the existing anti-trust statutes to at least discourage the pernicious monopolization of commerce that Big Boxes represented. By the same token, President Obama could have used existing federal law to break up the banking oligarchy starting in 2009, not to mention backing legislation to more crisply define alleged corporate “personhood” in the wake of the ruinous “Citizens United” Supreme Court decision of 2010. They don’t even talk about it because Wall Street owns them.

So, you fellow disaffected Democrats - those of you who can’t go over to the other side, but feel you have no place in your country’s politics - look around and tell me who you see casting a shadow on the Democratic landscape. Nobody. Just tired, corrupt, devious old Hillary and her nemesis Bernie the Union Hall Champion out of a Pete Seeger marching song.

I’ve been saying for a while that this period of history resembles the 1850s in America in two big ways: 1) our society faces a crisis, and 2) the existing political parties are not up to the task of comprehending what society faces. In the 1850s it was the Whigs that dried up and blew away (virtually overnight), while the old Democratic party just entered a 75-year wilderness of irrelevancy. God help us if Trump-o-mania turns out to be the only alternative.

Oh, by the way, notice that the lead editorial in Monday’s New York Times is a plea for transgender bathrooms in schools. What could be more important? For Transgender Americans, Legal Battles Over Restrooms.

Right-wing populism with xenophobic undertones seems to be on the rise across much of the Western world. Some people seem to have a great deal of difficulty with joining the rest of us in the 21st century.

Kunstler has gone full retard and conveniently avoided these issues:

1. lawlessness at the White House

2. black racism at DOJ

3. lawlessness at IRS

4. total failure of any kind of border control in favor of recruiting more Blue Team votes

5. the complete takeover of the Dem Party by the Progressives.

6. etc., etc., etc.

But he has a problem with Walmart, Costco and Home Depot while not a word about Google.

This is the society that happens, when you wake up every morning and all you can think about are 2 things:

1. Government

2. the Economy

All of the government worshippers, those that see government need in every single aspect of life-----this Bud's for you.  You got what you asked for.  Because ultimately your beloved government caused the mess we are living in this very moment.  Freedom, Liberty, the rule of law and TRUE free market economies wouldn't cause all of this bullshitted mess.

I disagree.  Survival trumps freedom - or at least the freedom you champion.  Libertarians tend to confuse public policy with tyranny.

But in an ironic way, I think you are right.  Mr. Kunstler is a bit of a Utopian.  He lives in a society of mega-me and thinks in terms of we.  We should do this and we should do that.  Sorry James, but that boat has sailed.  Oh, I don't disagree that we should do those things you list - but we won't.  In part due to libertarians like Mr. Meat Hammer, but more importantly, the people with power - the wealthy and their minions - want to keep the party going as long as the checks roll in.  They've purchased our political system and our judicial system.  They even control the major media outlets - down to PBS.  So even if Senator Sanders' policy positions are 'thin grits' - that's about the best we can hope for.

Libertarians are a funny lot.  They are so convinced the government rules and ruins their lives that they are individually doing the things you advocate.  They are prepping, urban gardening, self-medicating off-the-gridders because they are certain that YOU and your ilk are going to upset the gravy train.  This would be amusing - if I lived on Alpha Centauri.

How incrediby inane to call that syndicalist, corporatist, fascist cow a socialist/Marxist. Syndicalist, corporatist, fascist--government owned by corporations--that's what she represents! Get the terminology right. Calling her a socialist is so very misleading and so very mistaken. The only thing socialist about Ms. Cow is her words. Democrats have bamboozled various interest groups such as minorities and unions into voting blocks voting the Democrat ticket. They must pay some lip service to those groups to win their votes. But Ms. Cow is on the boards of, in the pay of and a cheerful worker for the (internationist) corporations, the vampire squids that are destroying two hundred plus years of American culture, values and economics.

Get the terminology right! There haven't been any socialists around since Richard Nixon.

It is your right wing that built the world while leftists have done all in their power to bring it down. If we are to be reduced to a level that ensures equality of outcome, then the rich man will simply have the largest cardboard box to live in. Leftists are willing to burn this world to the ground just to be able to say they destroyed the rich. I have always believed that we each need something valuable enough to be willing to die to defend, but that does not mean die to deprive others of what we cannot have. Envy and revenge are terrible things to die for, although I think we will soon see plenty who are.

Is support for rail travel 'not joining the 21st century'? If rail travel fuel costs 1/10 air travel fuel then it is the future. What we don't need is government rail. The government should make rail right of ways available and otherwise get out of the way. As it is, in the USA amtrak is slow and expensive. Other countries use rail. It can be done and should be done. That a 'liberal' voiced the idea does not mean it is a bad idea.

On the other hand, Walmart is not a monopoly. One has many ways to buy. The monopoly is the big banks which should have been broken.

Teddy Roosevelt broke up monopolies right and left to the surprise of his Republican backers. I wish Trump would turn out to be a trust buster. Paul wants to bust up Planned parenthood. Hardly a big problem.

Barr is a fucking joke and should not be run again as he is probably still in debt from the last abysmal campaign and certainly still trying to fashion a message -not a plan- out of discarded scraps of the Republican platform circa 1975 with a side of fringe/mj seasoning.

Bloomberg went insane with overbearing limo-liberal power in NYC.

Christie showed that he doesn't give a shit about economic progress or even just old-style infrastructure spending when he put the kabosh on NJ kicking in for a new tunnel to let people move more freely between NYC and economically ravaged eastern NJ.

The PARTIES are not going to rock the boat at all, period.

I have seen first hand what party politics has become, and it is little more than another milking industry filled with pundits, pollsters, campaign organizers, software paddlers, professional fund raisers, and various and sundry other hack and hangers on who make a living year in and year out 'working' for the 2 parties.  It truly is disgusting that in seeking a candidate to run, the first thing they automatically go for is a tall, white lawyer who can raise as much money as possible.  That's it.  How much can you raise.

Oh, there is one more thing.  Will you get in line and follow their directions?  Otherwise, they are not interested in you at all.  In fact, if you step out of line the least little bit, you get black-balled and become invisible to the party hacks.  They do not want anyone who is too knowledgeable or too independent.  They want to run your campaign for you, and use their hand picked consultants.  No positive, significant change can come from within, so, yes, there is great danger with a strongman, but I really see no choice as we continue to sink further into this quagmire.  Somebody has to turn over this apple cart.  Is it Trump?  I don't know, and we just got lucky When George Washington declined to become King or Emperor.....and Trump is no Washington, and neither is Sanders.  I am afraid that the only way we escape the grip of some form of Totalitarian government will be pure luck again.

People identify as democrats or republicans because of some paradigm that they are locked into... regardless of the circumstances and reality.

Personally, I cannot find anything likeable about either party within the current dialectic (except the hollow words they spew) and the corruption with which they have endeavored to immerse this nation.

Most Democrats will vote for the Dem on the ballot.  Most Republicans will show the same loiyalty.

The undecideds and Independents who are not activists, and really decide who wins, really don't pay much attention until after the National conventions and about 60 days out from election day.  All this hoopla going on right now is mostly just noise to keep the newsreaders on the 24hr news cycle employed, along with all the other consultants and pundits.  Trump & Sanders have provided some swell entertainment for a change, to what would be an otherwise terribly boring period in circle jerk politics.

The common consensus is that Trump could not win as an Independent, but that is wrong.  It is very possible when you take a good look at the numbers.  Let's go back to the last Independent who got a truly significant % of the vote - Ross Perot.

He ran an erratic campaign, but many people in the country were fed up with Washington, and NAFTA was a key topic.  Perot was the successful businessman who could set America on the right path again.

He got right at 19% of the vote (and split the Dems & Repubs right down the middle.  That Perot caused Bush to lose is fiction).....BUT the key number to look at is how many people said they would have voted for him IF they thought he had a chance to win --- 35% according to the exit polls.

If he got 19% and if 35% more had voted their desire instead of their party, he would have gotten 54%, leaving Clinton and Pappy Bush to split the remaining 46%.  You have to dig those numbers up, cause you sure won't hear them from the main stream media.

Trump's popularity and name recognition far exceeds that of Ross Perot, and he is a much better campaigner and showman.  He is tapping into a public that is arguably even more pissed than in 1992, and certainly the Internet will play a major role in this election.  We had never even heard of the Internet back then.  Anyone who just tosses out "Trump can't win" is either ignorant of the facts, or they have an agenda, or both.

VIDEO: Israeli Police Storm Jerusalem's Al-Aqsa Mosque
http://www.blacklistednews.com/VIDEO%3A_Israeli_Police_Storm_Jerusalem%2...

You know, their "third" [really 5th or so] temple cant be destroyed until they build it, right?
------------------

There is absolute proof that the present site of the Jewish "Wailing Wall" in Jerusalem is NOT any part of the Temple that existed in the time of Herod and Jesus. In fact, that particular location that the Jewish authorities have accepted represents the Western Wall of an early Roman fortress (finally built and enlarged by Herod the Great). King Herod called it Fort Antonia, after the famous Mark Anthony who lived at the end of the first century before Christ.

It was formerly called the Baris in the proceeding hundred years and it finally became known as the Praetorium in the New Testament period (the central military edifice in Jerusalem where the commanding general of a Legion of troops had his headquarters). This rectangular type of building clearly resembles most permanent military camps that the Romans constructed throughout the Empire to house their Legions. ...

http://askelm.com/temple/t000701.htm

The "Temple of Solomon", centrepiece of an ancient imperial capital and Yahweh's very own residence on earth, has ever cast its chimeric shadow over the Jewish people. The fabulous sanctuary has engaged the interest and excited the imagination of enthusiasts of the esoteric ever since the yarn of the mighty Jewish king was first told.

Solomon's arcane wisdom, supposedly encoded within the very measurements of the Temple itself, sustained Freemasonry for centuries. The purported clandestine activities of mediaeval Templars and Kabbalists have been regularly woven into complex "mysteries" in which lost treasures, even artifacts of the divine, await the intrepid. But for all the adventure, and considerable baloney, in reality, not a single stone of the Temple – nor the entire Solomonic theme park for that matter – has ever been unearthed.

In recent times, a single 4-centimetre pomegranate, the "ornamental barb of a priestly staff", enjoyed fame as the sole evidence of the Temple's existence – until it too was exposed as fake!

Why the deceit? For the priesthood of Judaism the grand illusion of a Temple of Solomon was a necessary one: it supported both the myth of God's patronage of the chosen people and the comforting dream of a once and future empire. This simple tale of fantasy and fraud begins with the purchase of a hilltop and leads rapidly to mass murder. But then, we are talking of religion.

This is an unfortunate article, it shows such a myopic view of the problems we face as a nation and as a planet. To suggest that Bernie isn't up to the task or that he doesn't get the real problem, for reasons that aren't clear, is pretty ridiculous and a bt arrogant. I think, based on a fair amount of research, Bernie is not only the best person for the job (of these choices) but also the candidate that actually represents the people! The folks in this country, by and large, are social democrats - that's why Roosevelt won four (count 'em 4) elections - and that's when more people voted as a percentage of the population.

the 1850s set off the last and greatest expansion of the american empire. it began with an immigration law that was not enforced. people crossed over into the frontier to mine gold, and when they got into trouble with the native americans the army stepped in and slaughtered the indians. (sounds fair to me) the frontier opened in 1870 and closed in 1890. congress did not say lets study this and we'll get back to you in ten years. by analogy america will expand itself again, using brute force, without debate, or compassion for the unfortunates who get in the way. just guessing mexico and canada, say goodye to your sovereignty. (just as germany and france took control of the finances of the piigs), eminent monetary domain. john hussman is concerned that the federal reserve is making fiscal policy, i notice they are making foreign policy as well. (for that matter the fed is a front, a beard, for american power) an intelligent friend suggests the job of the presidency is just too big for one man or woman,  i say how hard is it to be a puppet for an extra rational force. sometimes its hard to know what collective madness is channeling your brain i suppose.  is that voice really god, talking to me, or the voice of collective madness looking for a single entity to give it recognition, (a demagogue of course) but we are far too sophisticated for that, so we dress up our madness in some progressive garb usually disguising out intent to impose statism under old flags, or the removal of old flags. taking down all the old flags but one is the way to run up the new flag. stars and stripes look out, your history is hardly any better than the stars and bars. what does the flag of the new world order look like? it looks definitely american.
