Goodbye Troika: Germany Rides Into Its Greek Colony On The "Quadriga"

Tyler Durden's picture

With creditors' motorcades having officially returned to the streets of Athens in the wake of Greek lawmakers' approval of the second set of bailout prior actions last Wednesday, tensions are understandably high.

After all, these are the same "institutions" which Yanis Varoufakis famously booted from Greece after Syriza swept to power in January, and they've come to represent the oppression of the Greek people and are now a symbol of the country's debt servitude.

Although an absurd attempt was made to rebrand the dreaded "troika" earlier this year, the new and rather amorphous moniker - "the institutions" - never really stuck and perhaps because everyone involved felt the need to put a new name to the group that Greeks regard as the scourge of the Aegean in order to make negotiators feel safer on their trips to Athens, creditors have now added the ESM to their collective and rebranded themselves "The Quadriga."

Apparently (and unfortunately), this is not a joke. Here's MNI:

The source from the Commission also noted that the group formerly known as Troika is now being renamed as "Quadriga", to note the inclusion of the ESM in the talks.

"Quadriga is the name inspired by Commission President, Jean-Claude Juncker for the new Greek project" the Commission source said, adding that "the EU side is a bit nervous of not knowing the IMF stance."

We assume the reference to the IMF's "stance" there refers to the size of the bailout and the prospects for debt relief and not to the new nickname choice, but whatever the case, here's the definition of "quadriga" from Wikipedia:

A quadriga (Latin quadri-, four, and iugum, yoke) is a car or chariot drawn by four horses abreast (the Roman Empire's equivalent of Ancient Greek tethrippon). It was raced in the Ancient Olympic Games and other contests. It is represented in profile as the chariot of gods and heroes on Greek vases and in bas-relief. The quadriga was adopted in ancient Roman chariot racing. Quadrigas were emblems of triumph; Victory and Fame often are depicted as the triumphant woman driving it. In classical mythology, the quadriga is the chariot of the gods; Apollo was depicted driving his quadriga across the heavens, delivering daylight and dispersing the night.

We're not sure what's more ironic there, the fact that an image which once appeared on Greek ceramics is now the symbol of serfdom or the fact that it's the "chariot of the gods", who in this case would be eurocrats and IMF officials.

As amusing - and somewhat sad - as this is, perhaps the most tragically ironic part of the entire rebranding effort is that one of the most significant representations of a quadriga the world over sits atop the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.

Behold Greece, the new symbol of your perpetual debt slavery:

You have to take this line of thinking to its logical conclusion. Free men must eventually make tyrannical forces give up their guns...or all is in vain because they won't quit. Oppression is their addiction.

Originally, the Quadriga faced East when it was built in 1793, but this was changed after the Berlin Wall came down, and the Brandenburger Tor and Quadriga were renovated.

It probably faces West, in order to pay tribute to Europe's new corporate owners...

I've been lurking here for some time and I have to say that I am somewhat underwhelmed by the intellectual acuity I find on display here.  What I do not find surprising is that it's members appear to be republican inclined scroungers who think they are financially astute and are probably ALL broke and have far too much time on their hands.  That says old, on social security, tea kooks who don't want anyone to take any of what little they do have.  Misers is the word, calls to my mind a bunch of Silas Marners.  Nothing to add to the discourse except spew.  I come by to see what the latest msm crap is because this site is an aggregater that appeals to slugs, mostly......sometime entertaining, mostly lame. 47 story steel framed highrises always fall into themselves at freefall speed (NIST admitted over 100 ft of freefall) from office fires.  It's just a silly coincidence that several networks reported its collapse early.  The alternative is too scary, if one building was wired for demo then towers 1 and 2 were controlled demo as well.

That's impossible.  We have a free and accountable media that acts as the 4th branch of government.  If Israel and traitors within the Bush administration killed nearly 3K Americans on live TV to justify the theft of our rights and illegal wars... The talking heads would SURELY tell us!!!

the favourite song of student "brotherhoods" from a time when there was no such thing as Germany. because it is a quite young country, born 1871, in Versailles, btw

the implied part is "Ich will", i.e. I want a Germany, "I want all those small countries to stop being the battlefield of French, Austrian and Russian interests"

have, for example, a look at the battles of John Churchill, first Duke of Marlborough. in particular, the Battle_of_Blenheim, which resulted into the Crown presenting him Blenheim_Palace

the same place where his later scion, Winston Churchill, was born. btw, German Law deems the third verse of the song to be the current national anthem, not this first one

"the most tragically ironic part of the entire rebranding effort is that one of the most significant representations of a quadriga the world over sits atop the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin."

that's actually the favourite of some. by all rights, the most significant and oldest known representation of a quadriga is over the basilica of St. Mark, in Venice

which was stolen by the Venetian Republic, at that time still a theoretical vassal of the Eastern Roman Empire, i.e. Greece, when they sacked Constantinople, the capital of the Byzantine Empire, during a squabble about how to pay for the Crusade

the horses, though, were already stolen goods, from a disputed source somewhere in Asia

yup, europe has very bad coordination in all things related on "Public Relations". well, that's a war of words where the US, China and Russia excel

so be it, a "EU commissioner for public relations", i.e. propaganda is the very last thing I want to see. enjoy the "nazi symbolism" where actually that cross is Prussian

Mon, 07/27/2015 - 10:38 | 6358879 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

well, that's the "kick the Troika out of Greece question"

as I was mentioning, there is a simple concept, here at work:

a database where the single points of data are private and confidential... while the aggregates and statistics aren't

one where Greek Law states that both "Quadriga or Troika" have the aggregated/statistical access... and Varoufakis wanted to get the detailed access

Mon, 07/27/2015 - 10:48 | 6358927 Joe A
Joe A's picture

Perhaps but I think that the Troika has shown what they think of Greek law. You really think that they'd only have aggregated/statistical access? A list with detailed data on some of the notorious Greek tax evaders was handed to them anyway. Not that they did anything with that (nor previous or current Greek governments). You know these evaders being of their own sort  (like Lagarde being a tax evader herself).

Mon, 07/27/2015 - 11:00 | 6358972 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

Joe A, note the very words you used: "A list with detailed data on some of the notorious Greek tax evaders was handed to them anyway"

there are even private companies where the CEO or the CFO needs a reason to delve into personal data of customers, with IT systems that are set up this way

as a reminder, by his own admission Varoufakis planned to hack into them

instead of writing on a piece of paper something on the tune of: "I, by the authority given to me by the Greek Parliament as Minister of Finance, hereby want to have the same access as foreigners have to confidential Greek data", which would have become a ministerial decree, supported by law

he could not do such thing, because if the "Quadriga" has that kind of access, then not by law. and actually, it does not need this kind of access anyway, literally

Mon, 07/27/2015 - 11:11 | 6359003 Joe A
Joe A's picture

Planned to hack. And according to him he had permission from the PM to set up an alternative system. That is not the same a something written in law indeed. This is all word play and speculation. Taking liberty with the 'truth'. But Troika/Quadriga/Institutions do the same. Who says that these teams of Troika people visiting Athens tax office did not have full access?

Mon, 07/27/2015 - 11:23 | 6359047 Ghordius
Ghordius's picture

+1. "do the same" is a completely different thing. Varoufakis was on the record of complaining that "the EU" wanted access to the aggregated level data. at one EuroGroup meeting, he harped on until one collegue cited not only the EU treaties, but also the membership agreements to the... IMF

saying that the IMF has nearly the same access to nearly the same level of data as the Greek government. and this shut him up, and yet he continued to refuse to give this aggregated data... until Tsipras whistled him back, after a few months

personal details of taxpayers... the story is old, by now. plenty of precedents among the european sovereigns. they are very, very interesting... for political local reasons

long time ago there was a leaving Italian FinMin that out of spite published that data, in full. for hours, until it was taken down. and you can still get copies on illegal markets

that precedent made every parliament in europe to discuss the matter, and to set the standards of accessibility that are now law, including in Greece

The good part is that they won't be forced to buy the F-35.

"Greek Project", I effin hate that bullshit language. How comes everything nowdays is a "project"? It's like everything has become a game, something to toss aside when it all goes tits up. It's the talk of cunts.

I'll tell you why it's now the Quadriga and not the Troika:

Christine Lagarde is an Obama administration plant. Since her tenure began, the IMF has always had sympathy fo Greece. She hampers 1/3 of the Troika. A new addition to the party helps Germany's Fourth Reich work more efficently.

Nice.

The standard should have a swastika on it instead of the iron cross.

Actually I think the symbol should be a Greek being fucked by another Greek, like on some of the pottery.

Shades of Ben Hur in Athens. On the road to the Parthenon from the Piree (port), in the olden days, lay the old Circus Maximus where the chariot races used to occur, with a statue of Zeus dominating the entrance.

Well, I think they will have to build Circus Maximus again for Mutti's triumph. Ave Mutti !

Circus Maximus was in Rome, not Athens.  Its most famous charioteer was named Gluteus.

The Quadrigia in The Vatican was looted from
Constantinople when it was sacked by the Western Europeans! This is so appropriate.
