Could Trump Win?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

The American political class has failed the country, and should be fired. That is the clearest message from the summer surge of Bernie Sanders and the remarkable rise of Donald Trump.

Sanders’ candidacy can trace it roots back to the 19th-century populist party of Mary Elizabeth Lease who declaimed:

“Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street, and for Wall Street. The great common people of this country are slaves, and monopoly is the master.”

“Raise less corn and more hell!” Mary admonished the farmers of Kansas.

William Jennings Bryan captured the Democratic nomination in 1896 by denouncing the gold standard beloved of the hard money men of his day: “You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.”

Sanders is in that tradition, if not in that league as an orator. His followers, largely white, $50,000-a-year folks with college degrees, call to mind more the followers of George McGovern than Jennings Bryan.

Yet the stagnation of workers’ wages as the billionaire boys club admits new members, and the hemorrhaging of U.S. jobs under trade deals done for the Davos-Doha crowd, has created a blazing issue of economic inequality that propels the Sanders campaign.

Between his issues and Trump’s there is overlap. Both denounce the trade deals that deindustrialized America and shipped millions of jobs off to Mexico, Asia and China. But Trump has connected to an even more powerful current.

That is the issue of uncontrolled and illegal immigration, the sense America’s borders are undefended, that untold millions of lawbreakers are in our country, and more are coming. While most come to work, they are taking American jobs and consuming tax dollars, and too many come to rob, rape, murder and make a living selling drugs.

Moreover, the politicians who have talked about this for decades are a pack of phonies who have done little to secure the border.

Trump boasts that he will get the job done, as he gets done all other jobs he has undertaken. And his poll ratings are one measure of how far out of touch the Republican establishment is with the Republican heartland.

When Trump ridicules his rivals as Lilliputians and mocks the celebrity media, the Republican base cheers and laughs with him.

He is boastful, brash, defiant, unapologetic, loves campaigning, and is putting on a great show with his Trump planes and 100-foot-long stretch limos. “Every man a king but no man wears a crown,” said Huey Long. “I’m gonna make America great again,” says Donald.

Compared to Trump, all the other candidates, including Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, are boring. He makes politics entertaining, fun.

Trump also benefits from the perception that his rivals and the press want him out of the race and are desperately seizing upon any gaffe to drive him out. The piling on, the abandonment of Trump by the corporate elite, may have cost him a lot of money. But it also brought him support he would not otherwise have had.

For no group of Americans has been called more names than the base of the GOP. The attacks that caused the establishment to wash its hands of Trump as an embarrassment brought the base to his defense.

But can Trump win?

If his poll numbers hold, Trump will be there six months from now when the Sweet 16 is cut to the Final Four, and he will likely be in the finals. For if Trump is running at 18 or 20 percent nationally then, among Republicans, it is hard to see how two rivals beat him.

For Trump not to be in the hunt as the New Hampshire primary opens, his campaign will have to implode, as Gary Hart’s did in 1987, and Bill Clinton’s almost did in 1992.

Thus, in the next six months, Trump will have to commit some truly egregious blunder that costs him his present following. Or the dirt divers of the media and “oppo research” arms of the other campaigns will have to come up with some high-yield IEDs.

Presidential primaries are minefields for the incautious, and Trump is not a cautious man. And it is difficult to see how, in a two-man race against the favorite of the Republican establishment, he could win enough primaries, caucuses and delegates to capture 50 percent of the convention votes.

For almost all of the candidates who will have dropped out by then will have endorsed the last man standing against Trump. And should Trump be nominated, his candidacy would make Barry Goldwater look like the great uniter of the GOP.

Still, who expected Donald Trump to be in the catbird seat in the GOP nomination run before the first presidential debate? And even his TV antagonists cannot deny he has been great for ratings.

Trump has the right emotion:  anger.  It remains to be seen if the rest of the field will learn from that.

The biggest loser so far is Jeb, from prohibitive front runner, to hanging on for dear life.

Trump winning would be like BERLUSCONI winning in Italia. Sure - It can happen, but that's when you know a country has gone FULL(ER) RETARD.

IOW ~ The message it sends isn't so much as:

so much as

Hilary Clinton attended Trump's wedding on 2005. He has donated to the Demoratic Party, including the time during CLinton's Senate run.  On four separate occasions, Trump has donated to Hillary Clinton, in 2002, 2005, 2006 and in 2007. Trump has given between $100,0001 and $250,000 to the Clinton Foundation.

If you want Clinton, vote Trump. Also, Trump is polling double-digits head-to-head versus Clinton. Just like 2012, Dr. Paul is polling best verus the democrates. This time it Rand Paul, of course.

We had a chance to elect the real version of Donald Trump, back in '88 and '92. His name was Ross Perot and he predicted almost everything that has happened since, if he wasn't elected.  He was pretty much spot on.

So now, we have this clown version of Ross, and even though I find him despicable, I would probably vote for him over the rest of the clowns.

Ross Perot in '88 & '92.  Ron Paul a couple times.  Those were our chances to save the country.   It's over.  We're done here, it's just waiting for the Fat Lady to sing, now.

The short answer is he can't win. He's a great way to show the power elite the people are pissed off though. Once people realize what he has supported in the past there's no way he will draw 1%. Great for the entertainment value though. Watching these Washington scum deal with him on a debate stage should be fun.

i agree with much of your thoughts here.  i have a couple of questions about trump (and all politicians):

what is her/his position on israel and the too big to fail banks?

why should i/we believe what s/he says?

clinton and obama are eloquent liars.  bush is an incoherent one.

it's not what they disagree on that's the problem.  it's what they agree on.

Anyone over Hillary the Inevitable. So obviously and blatantly corrupt.

Wish something like "no confidence" was in play, as in if X percent vote "none of the above" they call it a scratch and start over. Draft a random respected city council leader from a big metro area for the interim. They might be bought, but probably not nationally bought.

Ron Paul was a truer candidate.

His ideas were sound, but, he is no leader.  That rare quality of driving fire is not in his soul.  Such heat can only be procured in the cauldron of suffering.  Only when this country and world begin to truly feel the pangs of physical hardship will such a person appear.  That time is coming.  Be on the lookout and discriminate to your utmost to ascertain the truth in his message when it finally emerges.  When it does - back it with all your resources.  Those ideas and that leader will, of course, not appear from the MSM (i.e. Trump), but as an unstoppable undercurrent with the few independent thinkers surging it forward.  All revolutions are driven by a tiny minority.  Alas, the more recent examples are of the malevolent stripe with usury and biblical tribalism as their motivating factors.  Obviously, these are based in lies, and thus they cannot be sustained.  What we are looking for are the revolutionary ideals based on truth and the indomitable laws of nature.  Once this victory is attained, it will be our responsibility to maintain an everlasting vigilance against those satanic forces which always strive to enslave.

this, merica, is way too gone to be retrived. fsa is a formidable problem, not to mention balacing the budget and causing millions of layoffs and an economic depression, fucking toast, enjoy the ride til the crumble evolves to a chaotic crash. greece is the template - hope i'm dead by then...

And if he was just playing politics, before he was a politican, why did he support her Senate campaign? Why did she attend his wedding?

Also, almost everyone that likes Trump does so beacuse 'He is different. He is not a politician. He doesn't have to play games.' So was he just playing politics? Or does he actually like Clinton? Either way the dude isn't who everyone is saying he is.

Don't think you're getting the point. You need to take things in context. The man said he gave money to the wicked witch.. he also said, he gave money to everybody indiscriminantly. Why? Because the guy was buying favor. You act like he is the only one who does this. Noone is saying Trump is an angel, most of all himself, but you're stuck on this Hillary thing and your obstinant stance on this seems rather disingenuous. Regardless, someone like Trump will never be allowed to win the nomination. Its already been explained by another commentor that the election is rigged just like everything else. I don't care how you vote nor did I infer who you have voted for in the past. My point is simply this: I acknowledge that Trump has been part of the crony capitalist regime (I.e. "He hs warts"). But finally someone who is taliking back when his individual liberty is challenged by the establishment.

He is certainly not Lilly white and pure, but by definition nobody is in today's political class. Including either Ron or Rand Paul. I'll give you this both of the Paul's speak/spoke up but when pressed the were suppressed because they did not hit back at the MSM or establishment.

Thus why a candidate like Trump is exactly what we need. White guilt, man bashing, and PC starts to end with his candidacy.

For anyone who has seen how the nomination process works from the inside, it is NOT about who the masses support. The delegate selection process is often opaque and complicated and varies state to state. The folks who are part of and control this process can significantly bias outcomes through all sorts of manuevers up to and including flat out breaking the rules.

Don't believe? If your republican party flat out broke the nomination rules and picked a candidate their members didn't want ... what is the recourse? Take them to court? They are a private organization with their OWN rules ... much like a board of directors can set rules for themselves to follow and promptly break those rules if they feel like it. It isn't a LAW, its an internal RULE of a PRIVATE organization. Who is going to enforce that?

But they try to avoid that because they need folks to play along ... and most folks don't pay enough attention to realize how it really works.

the LAST thing you want in this country is a constitutional convention. Watch the Mark Dice video where he gets a bunch of people to sign a petition to repeal the bill of rights. When this country is full of people that hopelessly stupid, a constitutional convention would be a disaster. For starters, you could kiss the right to bear arms good bye, at least in the sense we regard it.

I know you have the right idea, that we could fix a lot of things, and we could, but the problem is too many americans are just too hopelessly stupid to act in their own self interest, and the exact opposite would happen. You have WAY too much faith in the intelligence of your fellow citizens if you think it would go in our favor

The republican party machinery will not pass Trump as a candidate regardless of what registered republicans do or want. Just. Wont. Happen.

Consider the Saga of Russ Millete and Debbie Brown (do your own digging - here is one article) in Alaska.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/04/13/debbie-brown-ousted_n_3073122.html

Federal and State election LAWS have to be followed, so it isn't a complete street brawl, but the nomination process is run by PRIVATE organizations (i.e. Republican and Democrat parties) and they can do whatever the hell they want.

If Trump is serious, he should be getting his third party machinery in order.

To win, Trump will have to overwhelmingly capture the primary states, because the convention states are going to be heavily stacked against a candidate with no track record of party involvement and thus no base within the party structure to carry his banner in convention halls.

In 2012, I wanted Ron Paul. The GOP-e/Adelson were backing Romney. Adelson also was backing CFR Gingrich to siphon off conservative votes from Santorum.  Santorum won Iowa and was destroying Romney in the Midwest.  So what did the GOP-e and Rove do?  They stole it for Romney in the cities like Detroit plus other cities in Wisconsin, and a few others.  Santorum would carry every county except the cities.  Santorum was then threatened to force him to drop out. He did it all with very little funding.

When the general election came around, Obola did the same thing to Romney in cities in Ohio, Florida, VA and other key states.  Early voting and voting after the polls closed.  Romney and the whole GOP-e disappeared for days after the election was stolen.

The GOP-e did it again in 2014 when Thad Cochran stole his Senate seat (twice) against conservative Chris McDaniel.   The GOP-e got Democrats to offer $15 for black Dem votes for Cochran.  They also rigged the vote in various counties.  McDaniel won twice.

The USA does not have real elections.  2012 and 2008 were all rigged and 2000 and 2004 were not much better.

The problem with that theory is that if Trump has strong public support and should be winning the nomination but is blocked by establishment chicanery, he will go third party and destroy them.  They might be prepared to give up the presidency but there are all the other candidates up and down the ticket who depend on the coattails who would be put at risk.

And if Trump does go third party, expect him to do something that seems outlandish but is calculated for a big effect, like appointing Oprah as VP nomination.  She'd pull more women than Clinton.

What the Republican establishment could get away with against Ron Paul becomes very high risk for them against a multi-billionaire who has a massive ego, only plays to win, and operates on the basis of hitting hard anyone who hits him, none of which could be said about Ron Paul.

"Trump is there to siphon off votes from Jeb and get Hillary elected.  He's a Clinton operative who knows where his bread is buttered."

similar things were said about every and each candidate that was not in the the favourite son of one of the two big parties that dominate American politics

fact is that whenever there is only one seat to capture, two contendents will lead the race (A & B), and the third one (C) will be seen as a detraction from one of the two

fact is that a one seat, one winner takes all system can lead to a polarization of politics. polarization means a division in two camps only, btw

as a reminder, George Washington, the rebel general and first president, believed that such divisions into factions (his words) was deleterious to the young republic

as a further reminder, many other countries that do have a presidential system based on direct elections have a first race and then a run-off of the two leading candidates

if you were brought up in a religion without any comparison to other religions, you might believe that burning widows after the husband died is "just the way of the world"

if you fervently believe that your constitution and electoral system are great... but you have no comparison to other constitutions and other electoral systems...

... then you are an easy victim of propaganda. like that of the two-party system

what does a one-party system abhor above all other things? more political parties

what does a two-party system abhor above all other things? more political parties

what do they both have in common? a simple slogan: "you are either with us or against us". the hallmark of fundamentalism and radicalims, btw

65 million Americans voted for Obama in 2012. That's about 20% of the total population give or take.

That's who rules all of us. So to say that Trump 'can not be elected' is actually playing into the hands of the propagandists and the current power structure.

He most certainly can be elected.  If half of white men and a quarter of white women voted for him, it would be more than enough.

If he keeps saying the things most white people are thinking, he will continue to gain momentum, simply because neither party in the establishment represents the interests of straight white Americans with jobs.

They claim to do so during elections but never follow through.

Not that Trump would be any different in that regard, but they fear him because he's a catalyst. A spark plug to ignite the combustible mixture of economic frustration, racial persecution, and just overall sickofitallness present in large swathes of taxpaying white Americans.

get out of here with your ronnie worship. He ran on a bunch of libertarian rhetoric and then did exactly NONE of it. There is a common problem on here with people remembering reagan for what he said rather than what he actually did. Promised fiscal dicipline, he was even going to abolish the debt of education, and assured everyone that govt wasn't the answer, but the problem.

Then, as president, it was his admin that gave us the 'deficits don't matter' meme, he FUCKING TRIPLED the national debt, ramped up the unconstitutional and immoral war on drugs( he even tried to change posse comitatus to use the military to help, small govt of him..), and not only did he NOT end the dept of education, it got a bigger budget every single year he was in office. As for him somehow causing the collapse of the USSR, it was a crumbling facade of its former self by the time he got into office and was on its way out anyway, as ALL socialist, central planned countries eventually do.

The real question is one posed by Hillary "what difference at this point does it make?".

If anyone has the brains and balls to do the things necessary to save this country its Trump. He's shown that in the business world better than any candidate in modern time I'd say.

Like I said - love that that the DONALD is talking, but let us not forget he actuallly gave money to Hillary in 2007 and supports an 'assault' weapons ban.

NOW has he changed??? is he a CONSTIUTIONALIST??? HMMMMMMMM.....if he played that role and broke the back of the corrupt GOP I'd (and milllions of conservatives) would join hands

Donald -what say you, Sir?

He doesn't attend Bilderberg, so you are correct.

#1 reason to like him. Bilderberg is the biggest enemy of all citizens of the world without doubt.

If he is a player nearer the end, he will attend Bilderberg.

What you think they will give him a choice?

It doesn't matter if Trump makes it to the ballot or not.  The sheeple will be trained who to vote for and in the event the sheeple vote wrong there is always the Diebold solution.

Votes dont count, its who counts the votes that matters.

Unfortunately, no 'regular' person could win because they don't have the money. To get the money they would have to sell out to the monied powers and special interests. Also, even if they 'survived' on grass roots donations they would then get marginalized, excoriated and raped by the MSM. This is why the system needs to change. Otherwise it will be more of the same rigged game.

A ZHer made the best comment the other day.

Paraphrasing....  America: where you need to raise $50 million to get a job that pays $400,000.

He can win.

Not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. I guess he might know what to do when our bubble blowing leverage machine blows up.

After all, he has made his $$ on leverage.

The part of me that just likes mad shit happening wants Trump to win. The part of my brain that wins say that Trump winning would probably be a bad thing.

Bad, as in just BAD.  It doesn't need a comparison.

The man has emerged unscathed from bankruptcy countless times. Maybe he can shepherd the US thru it's bankruptcy.
