Could Trump Win?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

The American political class has failed the country, and should be fired. That is the clearest message from the summer surge of Bernie Sanders and the remarkable rise of Donald Trump.

Sanders’ candidacy can trace it roots back to the 19th-century populist party of Mary Elizabeth Lease who declaimed:

“Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street, and for Wall Street. The great common people of this country are slaves, and monopoly is the master.”

“Raise less corn and more hell!” Mary admonished the farmers of Kansas.

William Jennings Bryan captured the Democratic nomination in 1896 by denouncing the gold standard beloved of the hard money men of his day: “You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.”

Sanders is in that tradition, if not in that league as an orator. His followers, largely white, $50,000-a-year folks with college degrees, call to mind more the followers of George McGovern than Jennings Bryan.

Yet the stagnation of workers’ wages as the billionaire boys club admits new members, and the hemorrhaging of U.S. jobs under trade deals done for the Davos-Doha crowd, has created a blazing issue of economic inequality that propels the Sanders campaign.

Between his issues and Trump’s there is overlap. Both denounce the trade deals that deindustrialized America and shipped millions of jobs off to Mexico, Asia and China. But Trump has connected to an even more powerful current.

That is the issue of uncontrolled and illegal immigration, the sense America’s borders are undefended, that untold millions of lawbreakers are in our country, and more are coming. While most come to work, they are taking American jobs and consuming tax dollars, and too many come to rob, rape, murder and make a living selling drugs.

Moreover, the politicians who have talked about this for decades are a pack of phonies who have done little to secure the border.

Trump boasts that he will get the job done, as he gets done all other jobs he has undertaken. And his poll ratings are one measure of how far out of touch the Republican establishment is with the Republican heartland.

When Trump ridicules his rivals as Lilliputians and mocks the celebrity media, the Republican base cheers and laughs with him.

He is boastful, brash, defiant, unapologetic, loves campaigning, and is putting on a great show with his Trump planes and 100-foot-long stretch limos. “Every man a king but no man wears a crown,” said Huey Long. “I’m gonna make America great again,” says Donald.

Compared to Trump, all the other candidates, including Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, are boring. He makes politics entertaining, fun.

Trump also benefits from the perception that his rivals and the press want him out of the race and are desperately seizing upon any gaffe to drive him out. The piling on, the abandonment of Trump by the corporate elite, may have cost him a lot of money. But it also brought him support he would not otherwise have had.

For no group of Americans has been called more names than the base of the GOP. The attacks that caused the establishment to wash its hands of Trump as an embarrassment brought the base to his defense.

But can Trump win?

If his poll numbers hold, Trump will be there six months from now when the Sweet 16 is cut to the Final Four, and he will likely be in the finals. For if Trump is running at 18 or 20 percent nationally then, among Republicans, it is hard to see how two rivals beat him.

For Trump not to be in the hunt as the New Hampshire primary opens, his campaign will have to implode, as Gary Hart’s did in 1987, and Bill Clinton’s almost did in 1992.

Thus, in the next six months, Trump will have to commit some truly egregious blunder that costs him his present following. Or the dirt divers of the media and “oppo research” arms of the other campaigns will have to come up with some high-yield IEDs.

Presidential primaries are minefields for the incautious, and Trump is not a cautious man. And it is difficult to see how, in a two-man race against the favorite of the Republican establishment, he could win enough primaries, caucuses and delegates to capture 50 percent of the convention votes.

For almost all of the candidates who will have dropped out by then will have endorsed the last man standing against Trump. And should Trump be nominated, his candidacy would make Barry Goldwater look like the great uniter of the GOP.

Still, who expected Donald Trump to be in the catbird seat in the GOP nomination run before the first presidential debate? And even his TV antagonists cannot deny he has been great for ratings.

Please - how is Sanders, as President [not king, and not your drinking buddy] worse than Trump or Hillary or the rest.

In terms of not getting US soldiers and marines and lots of innocent people killed - there's really no question Sanders is best, and I admit, that's my number one issue.

Amazing how the Left/Right bullshit and the word "socialist" just gets people to stop thinking at all.

I was watching stuff on youtube the other day about liberals attacking libertarians [straw men stuff as usual - penn jillette v bill nye and related vids] and was irritated but for fuck's sake.... I think you have to be kind of an asshole to think Hillary or Trump are better for the country.

I'm willing to be convinced otherwise, but I can not see any argument where, as president, dealing with the fucktards in congress, Sanders isnt the least worst option.

Trump may have said something quasi-refreshing re the toll of unfettered illegal immigration [if crassly and imprecisely]

But that doesn't mean he gives a fuck about you, or individual liberty, or the country as a whole.

He is another narcissist and his greed and love of power will marry him to the same warmongering cunts who own every candidate except... like or loathe him... Sanders.

I side with you on that.

I am a cynic.  Trump is clearly a ringer for Clitnon.  It is not more complicated than that.

It is even simpler: this is 100% theater.  I chuckle whenever I see otherwise intelligent folks discuss Trump seriously like as if they genuinely had a choice at the ballot box. Discussing Trump is as enlightening as asking the question:  "What if Monica Lewinsky's dress was red instead of blue? How would that change the course of history?"  Sorry but President Trump can not possibly be any more powerful than a dried cum-stain on a dress --- that is saying a lot, in my opinion.  He has to know it too.

Trump is not an idiot.  He knows the President has no power.

<<Could Trump Win?>>

Sure, he can win because ANYBODY could win --- you just need to either be a good actor or a succesful dirty rotten asshole with lots of leads on vested interests.

-------

If you are a Trump fan for any reason other than the laughs, then I laugh in your face.

Do yourself a favor:  pay attention to the issues/targets your hero avoids.

Which is it? Dumb voters? Or a one party system we are ruled under that calls itself a two party system and won't let some folks in to be voted on in the first place?

I don't blame the voters (at least not at the national level) for a milisecond. They are not wealthy enough to put forward candidates, never mind win.

The right people aren't going to be elected.  They never are.  Trump might be the next best thing though.  He reminds me of a rich version of Ventura.  Perhaps that is what we need.  Trump + Ventura.  Two people who clearly hate the establishment politicians and are willing to tell them where they can get off. Seriously, if we're going down the toilet, we may as well do it with a smile on our faces.

The issue, to me, isn't whether Trump (or any of the 'good' guys, like maybe Rand) could pull us out of the event horizon.  I believe it's too late for anyone to fix our problems, other than to say that maybe they could make responsible, difficult (and not populist) decisions about how we deal with our issues.  So basically the question is, who do we want to be in charge of the US bankruptsy?  Trump or Trump + Ventura might make the ride all that much more enjoyable as we short the market and have our gold, silver, and bitcoin stashed.

Donald Trump slammed President Obama Thursday on TODAY for failing to take a stronger line against President Vladimir Putin in dealing with Ukraine, saying he feared Obama would now make up for lost time with imprudent moves to “show his manhood.”

http://www.today.com/news/donald-trump-putin-has-eaten-obamas-lunch-ukra...

Mr. Trump claimed last month that he had devised a “foolproof way” to defeat the Islamic State “very quickly.” But he refused to divulge it, saying he did not “want the enemy to know what I’m doing.” He calls President Obama “one of the worst things that’s ever happened to Israel,” and blames him for deteriorating U.S.-Israeli relations. He says Russian-backed separatists are acting aggressively in Ukraine because the United States is “not a respected country and we don’t have respected leadership at this moment” – but says America’s European allies should confront Russia.

I really don't know where he stands on most issues, and he probably doesn't, either.  It's doubtful that he has spent a lot of time forming geopolitical positions, so most of what he 'believes' is likely superficial.  I could easily imagine Israel becoming less of a BFF if Nutty Yahoo gave him a bunch of crap.  It will be interesting to watch as he fleshes out his positions on a range of issues.  When it comes to trade, we already know he is not in favor of the current TPP that's on the table, and to me that is a good thing.  I'm just not sure about war & the MIC.  Let's face it.  If you were a businessman charged with fixing America, would we be spending more than all our so-called enemies combined on exotic weapons and far flung bases around the world?  Or, would you look around and realize we could put millions of people back to work upgrading and repairing our infrastructure?  For sure, it's a much better show with Trump in the game.

Can he win the Republican nomination?  Not if they can stop him, and they are going to throw everything they can at him.

Will he run as an Independent if he gets pissed with the party establishment?  Could he win as an Independent?  Conventional wisdom says he could not, simply because no one ever has.  However, looking back at Ross Perot in 1992, the last Independent who polled a significant % of the vote, and digging into the exit poll numbers shows it is very possible.  Consider this:

Perot won roughly 19% of the popular vote.  He pulled equally from both registered Dems and Repubs (it is fiction that he threw the race to Clinton.  Daddy Bush lost all by himself).....HOWEVER, exit polls revealed that 34% of the voters said they would have voted for Perot IF they thought he could win.  Put 19% together with 34%, and we have a new President Perot.  Donald Trump is much better known, more popular, and probably richer than Perot.  For sure, he is a better campaigner.  If Trump does not implode, and chooses to run as an Independent, there is a very strong chance he could win a 3-way between Bush & Clinton.  Very strong.  So, when you hear someone automatically dismiss Trump or the possibility of an Independent winning, they either don't know what they are talking about, or they have an agenda, or both.

The big question: Running Mate.

The GOP might be faced with trying to broker a Bush/Trump ticket -just to keep the Party from tearing itself in half.

GOD I would love to hear what Pataki and Sessions think about this...

...WAIT A MINUTE.

Now that I've said his name: Pataki is a deeeeeeply underappreciated operative with astounding knowledge of the Republican field: he knows the name of everyone and anyone involved in NY.  If someone is running for fucking dog-catcher in NY State Pataki knows their kids names and grade-point averages last semester in grade school.  He also has deep feelers extending well outside NY and works closely with Sessions...

Obviously Pataki and Trump know each other.

Pataki might not like Trump; but, ...IF it's pair with Trump or go home...

Pataki might be a strong enough pairing for selling Trump to the base at the Convention.  Jeb can be brought into the fold with a promise of appointment at the Cabinet/Secretarial level...

I almost can't believe I hadn't thought of this sooner...

Ok.   You heard it here first: eyes on former NY Governor Pataki as a possible running mate w/ Trump if the polls favor Trump.

Personally, not that I'm favorable to either major Party and I'm talking political inside ball here more than anything else: much of what is going to transpire is going to be hashed out behind closed doors in small wood paneled rooms...

I'm distrustful of Trump.

...& IF I was confronted with an either/or between another Bush and Pataki I would take Pataki in a heartbeat.

My perspective is this.  The American (educated) electorate is and has been totally sick and tired of what's going on in and isn't being done in our political system today.  Everyone knows that politicians are paid liars and totally beholden to corporations and lobbyists.  For me Trump is literally a breath of fresh air.  Will he get the nomination?  I don't have a clue.  In the mean time - I'm positive that Trump's ratings will only grow.  He will force any competitor - Republican or Democrat to speak up and speak the truth.  That's awesome in itself.  He's egotistical - that's his nature.  Obama is a sociopath narcissist. I really admire that he's paying his own way (which is really pissing off a lot of politicians/lobbyists) and he's a straight shooter - unlike every other damn politician of either side.  And the absolute bottom line for me is that I firmly believe that he does have the best interests of the United States of America at heart.  He believes in the greatness and exceptionalism of the U.S. - totally unlike our current president.

Seems to me that Donald Trump is like the idiomatic monkey wrench.  If the machine of government were in proper operating condition, there would be little need for him. But many people are fed up and out of patience with a government that is broken, possibly beyond repair. When it becomes obvious that the established procedure is not going to fix things, a lot of people might like to grab a big monkey wrench and apply some emotionally satisfying "percussive maintenance" to the problem.

If he remotely looked like he would win, they'd do something to kill his chances. If he looked like he'd win as a third party, they'd do something to kill him.

My theory (and reading the messages here, I'm not alone) is that he's in the race specifically to throw the election to Hillary. If he runs 3rd party, we'll know for sure that's what has been done.

So who cares if it's Hillary over Bush? One faction of the Illuminati elites controls the democrrats and another the Republicans. It's a game to them  -a sporting event- a gentleman's bet  -both parties are controlled by the same masters. So if the Dem factions outmaneuvers the Rep faction by getting trump third party, the Rep faction can get Bernie to run to counter this. It's all a game to them  -  they control the elections as they own all "serious" candidates. Those candidates who really represent the people are good for no more than 5% of the vote. We are a nation of sheeple - people who graze in the beautiful green fields continue to do as they are told to avoid the fictitious "wolves" outside the protection of the Shepard  -who will eventually lead them over the cliff or to be sheered and murdered at the appropriate time in the future. That is entirely the wrong question.

The question that needs to be asked is: Who in America can walk into Washington and stand up to (actually eliminate) the 50,000 lobbyists and paid political hacks whose lifeblood depends on maintaining the status quo?

The incredibly naive college students that voted Obama in thought he was the one but they were deceiving themselves. He was no match for the machine.

The correct answer is:

No one

The American political machine is exactly that. A machine that has been built piece by piece for over 200 years. Americans are in deep denial and until they snap out of it and flush all the corruption out of Washington, nothing will change

NEW CALIFORNIA: MASS IMMIGRATION TURNING VIRGINIA BLUE….Work harder america, the third world is expecting that welfare check

..."In the span of one generation, Fairfax County has seen an explosion in its immigrant population. In 1970, more than 93 percent of Fairfax County’s population was white and middle-class. In the fall of 1970, a white 6-year-old child beginning elementary school in one of the county’s developing towns… could look to his left, or look to his right, and see a classroom full of children who, at least 90 percent of the time, looked like him and who spoke English. By 2010, a child entering elementary school in Fairfax County would almost certainly encounter a classmate who did not speak English as a primary language, and whose parents or grandparents immigrated from places such as Vietnam, India, Korea or a country in Africa."...

You know... I may be the only handsome, big-dicked fellow here deliberating between Sanders and Trump, eh?

I'm all for legal immigration to be adjusted up or down as the economy and national climate allows - but see no logical reason to accept the false premise that not wanting to become a minority in my own homeland makes me "racist."

I think most immigrants, certainly their kids, are good, decent, hard-working.

But how much is enough in 2015?

Why cant these countries get their shit together as our own goes down the tubes?

Luv the immigrants.  They so love their fellow American.  Oh yeah, that is right, even if they do get permanent residency or citizenship eventuallly, this group NEVER ASSIMILATES.  While groups before them were forced to learn English, we coddle this group by having signs and documents produced in both languages.  In public schools, the kids have their studies taught to them en Espanol.  Even at the grocery store in the US - have you read most labels lately?  You'd be hard pressed to find English before Spanish on many American brands.

Funny thing is, we from Dade County, FL warned the rest of you back in the 1970's and early 80's AND NO ONE LISTENED.   Buena Suerte now, suckers!

well expectations changed over time as government grew and grew.

If the deal was - if you can find a job and house, you can stay... I wouldn't really care. It's not really a race thing [though isn't it normal and healthy and sensible to not want to go from being th emajority to a minority ruled by a tiny hostile elite? PC brainwashing aside, there's no really coherent argument by which it is immoral to not want to be replaced and weakened, and one need not be all Nietzche about it either]...

anyway, what we have now is - all sorts of free benefits,
"rights" groups who are really "Free Shit for Us" groups, Press 1 for English etc etc.

The fucking Left should have to host all of these precious immigrants in their own home.

Separately - The Obama plan to build low income housing in affluent suburbs is yet another Fed over reach but I'm not at all opposed to the rich WASPs and JEWs who have brainwashed the country with the idea it is "racist "to oppose open borders" and who love to malign the "selfish" libertarians and "racist" right wing having to live near gangs from El Salvador and "urban" youths.

See how they like it - see how mugged by reality they can be...

It is a 15 months until the election.  Unfortunately, those that look strongest at the beginning of the race usual never make it to the White House.  That being said, Trump has already had some Howard Dean moments and came out unscathed, so maybe, just maybe this time it is different (we can only hope!).

No way. Not a chance. He's the Ross Perot of 2016. He's there to win the presidency for Hillary. Trump and the Clintons are very old friends.
