Could Trump Win?

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Patrick Buchanan via Buchanan.org,

The American political class has failed the country, and should be fired. That is the clearest message from the summer surge of Bernie Sanders and the remarkable rise of Donald Trump.

Sanders’ candidacy can trace it roots back to the 19th-century populist party of Mary Elizabeth Lease who declaimed:

“Wall Street owns the country. It is no longer a government of the people, by the people, and for the people, but a government of Wall Street, by Wall Street, and for Wall Street. The great common people of this country are slaves, and monopoly is the master.”

“Raise less corn and more hell!” Mary admonished the farmers of Kansas.

William Jennings Bryan captured the Democratic nomination in 1896 by denouncing the gold standard beloved of the hard money men of his day: “You shall not press down upon the brow of labor this crown of thorns, you shall not crucify mankind upon a cross of gold.”

Sanders is in that tradition, if not in that league as an orator. His followers, largely white, $50,000-a-year folks with college degrees, call to mind more the followers of George McGovern than Jennings Bryan.

Yet the stagnation of workers’ wages as the billionaire boys club admits new members, and the hemorrhaging of U.S. jobs under trade deals done for the Davos-Doha crowd, has created a blazing issue of economic inequality that propels the Sanders campaign.

Between his issues and Trump’s there is overlap. Both denounce the trade deals that deindustrialized America and shipped millions of jobs off to Mexico, Asia and China. But Trump has connected to an even more powerful current.

That is the issue of uncontrolled and illegal immigration, the sense America’s borders are undefended, that untold millions of lawbreakers are in our country, and more are coming. While most come to work, they are taking American jobs and consuming tax dollars, and too many come to rob, rape, murder and make a living selling drugs.

Moreover, the politicians who have talked about this for decades are a pack of phonies who have done little to secure the border.

Trump boasts that he will get the job done, as he gets done all other jobs he has undertaken. And his poll ratings are one measure of how far out of touch the Republican establishment is with the Republican heartland.

When Trump ridicules his rivals as Lilliputians and mocks the celebrity media, the Republican base cheers and laughs with him.

He is boastful, brash, defiant, unapologetic, loves campaigning, and is putting on a great show with his Trump planes and 100-foot-long stretch limos. “Every man a king but no man wears a crown,” said Huey Long. “I’m gonna make America great again,” says Donald.

Compared to Trump, all the other candidates, including Hillary Clinton and Jeb Bush, are boring. He makes politics entertaining, fun.

Trump also benefits from the perception that his rivals and the press want him out of the race and are desperately seizing upon any gaffe to drive him out. The piling on, the abandonment of Trump by the corporate elite, may have cost him a lot of money. But it also brought him support he would not otherwise have had.

For no group of Americans has been called more names than the base of the GOP. The attacks that caused the establishment to wash its hands of Trump as an embarrassment brought the base to his defense.

But can Trump win?

If his poll numbers hold, Trump will be there six months from now when the Sweet 16 is cut to the Final Four, and he will likely be in the finals. For if Trump is running at 18 or 20 percent nationally then, among Republicans, it is hard to see how two rivals beat him.

For Trump not to be in the hunt as the New Hampshire primary opens, his campaign will have to implode, as Gary Hart’s did in 1987, and Bill Clinton’s almost did in 1992.

Thus, in the next six months, Trump will have to commit some truly egregious blunder that costs him his present following. Or the dirt divers of the media and “oppo research” arms of the other campaigns will have to come up with some high-yield IEDs.

Presidential primaries are minefields for the incautious, and Trump is not a cautious man. And it is difficult to see how, in a two-man race against the favorite of the Republican establishment, he could win enough primaries, caucuses and delegates to capture 50 percent of the convention votes.

For almost all of the candidates who will have dropped out by then will have endorsed the last man standing against Trump. And should Trump be nominated, his candidacy would make Barry Goldwater look like the great uniter of the GOP.

Still, who expected Donald Trump to be in the catbird seat in the GOP nomination run before the first presidential debate? And even his TV antagonists cannot deny he has been great for ratings.

So who cares? Hillary or Bush? I'm not sure which one is more evil. Makes no difference. I don't like Trump. Would never vote for him - but in a race where the American Sheeple decide - I hope they put in the buffoon Trump.

In considering the 2016 sheeple census, Trump, and Hillary, all a thinking person need do is notice the continuum of the Bush Jr. regime with Obama's regime, and then remember WTC-7's free fall.

For the non-thinking, well, good luck with that.

Despite this, I must confess that I enjoy watching Mr. Trump heap (truthtful) disrespect on the lamescream establishment sock puppets, whether wearing an elephant or jackass costume, and watching them and their cheerleading parrots in the corporate media cartel squirm.

The current sociopolitonomic cunundrum we currently find ourselves in is like a large multilayered knot in a fishing line,  one that took a long time to form and could take a long time to undo, if ever.  When undoing a knot, one can selectively push here and pull there and maybe over time get it worked out, or get frustrated and grab at the thing with reckless abandon in the hopes that either a) it gets fixed or b) at least a newly structured problem is created.

Trump fits in to the latter.  Could be a longshot, could be the only shot.

Some of us are missing the point of the Trump thing.

I agree with those who doubt he is serious about truly fixing the country.  Before I trust on that, I'd like to verify and validate.

With that said, Trump has already crossed lines that the political class never, ever, EVER would.  He called out McCain for being the lying tool that he is (admittedly in less than optimal terms.)  Trump also pulled up Lindsey Graham's britches to reveal him for the gelded creature that he is.

Trump is only gaining support because he is willing to rip apart the nonsense Risk game that the GOP and Democrats play.  I worked in political consulting: it is big time money.  The professional campaigners alone would want to keep the silly two party patty cake game alive- to say nothing of the Fortune 100 that really runs the world.

In sum, I think Trump's demolition of the neatly arranged pagent is going to embolden others to take on the GOP leadership (just this evening, we see a formal move to eject John Lacrymose Boehner from his cushy office.)

Ultimately the problems we face will not be solved via federal elections.  You all may interpret that as you will.  But the Trump candidacy could well serve the purpose of finally exposing our system for being a complete joke.  That alone would be a great success that will not happen with any of the other candidates.

yeah this sort of behavior is like throwing spitballs behind the teachers back.. the first guy usually gets away with it, the second or third guy gets blamed. right now Huckabee is doing i wont apoligoze pantomine, but hes already on double secret probation. the problem for the Trump is the PARTY, the party doesnt like this sort of thing, and so when he says no i wont run as an independent hes really laying down the gauntlet, he wants his party to get itself together, more than he wants to make a spectacle of himself, so logic dictates that he  quits at some point, start a pool, and toss in a few bucks.

Well said.  Especially the slam on Ms. Graham.

I still highly suspect TPTB were concerned on internal polling of the next politician who was selected to carry the water (HRC), and pushed Hair Piece to shake things up, get pissed when RHINOs and controlled media slammed him, and run as a 15-20% 3rd party spoiler, ensuring HRC slides in even with less than 39% of the popular vote.

Still, we're passed the event horizon.  Might as well see if Hair Piece is willing to go totally rogue and win the whole thing so at least the end is entertaining.  His campaign slogan should be "Trump '16:  What difference does it make?????"

And that is conceivable scenario, without a doubt.  If the Trump candidacy is meant to open the path for Hillary Clinton, I would tend to think that we will find a fair amount of smoke from that arson's fire before very long.

At this point I'm going more with the vanity campaign ideaa.  Indeed, I argue that the mistake that many make is being cynical: 'Because it is an ego project, it must all be bad.'  Well, life is usually much more complex than simple 'Good'uns and Bad'uns'.

Trump did make a big deal about the US government sitting around as Obama toyed with letting Ebola have a chance at the American Dream.

As I see it, Ron Paul was definitely more principled, but just didn't have all the pieces to actually 'take possession' so to speak.

I'm not a fanboi who thinks that Trump is going to transform the country into dreamy wonderfulness.  I do think, however, there is a real chance that he shakes up the political establishment forcing a realignment.  In the midst of that, it might be possible for some states to reassert certain local powers.

At the end of the day, the Federal Reserve/Fortune 100 runs the show and if someone poses a real threat to their domination, that person will be removed from the picture.  I would suspect that Trump is not so conceited to think that he would avoid this situation- and so I would suspect that he will bow out eventually.

Bernie Sanders a Jew from Brooklyn, New York. Was elected as a congressthing from Vermont with the help of the NRA in 1990. He voted against the Brady bill and then he STABBED THE NRA in the back. Voted for "Assault Weapon" ban and every other gun control bill that he could. Now he represents Vermont which has the best gun laws in the USA, you do not need a permit to carry concealed. Yet it has the lowest violent crime rate in the USA. Fortunately for Bernie-boy all the leftists are fleeing what they created in MA and have infested Maine, Vermont and New Hampshire. Luckily .gov and refugee groups who get HUGE .gov $$$ make that TAXPAYER $$$ are flooding those states with Somalis and IBM is flooding the region with Muslims. So they can run but they can't hide.

Trump is no answer but at the very least he mentioned Illegal immigration, but like everyone else including Ted Cruz he is for LEGAL immigration well...

No candidates of either party are willing to take on the Jews, the creators and instigators of the imminent chaos.

Trump will pick on Mexicans, Muslims, Iranians, Russians and Chinese, but not Jews. His candidacy is a sideshow.

On the one hand, the race is between Trump and the one-party-pretending-to-be-two-parties system, so it would be good if he won. On the other hand, if he did win, the CIA would tell him on day one to do as he's told or he'll end up like JFK. So nothing will change either way. Democracy is an illusion designed only to prevent revolution.

I liked Trump in 2012

He brings up two issues nobody else talks about.

Trade and jobs outsourced to China

Immigration

They have all these fruity visas that allow them to work temporarily and such.

Meanwhile an invasion of America as we speak of illegals in a terrible economy.

Both immigration and globalism has hurt our own people and not one SOB in DC will even acknowledge it.

Hillary's Achilles' Heel is her insataible Greed and her utterly psychotic personality.

I'd vote for Trump, Rand Paul second, but does it make a difference?

Millions of new private sector jobs will have people working and drawing paychecks all over America before the 2016 Presidential Elections if these Repeal and Replace laws are passed today with the same speed as Wall Street and the banks were bailed out in 2008. “How many businesses do you know that want to cut their revenue in half? That’s why the healthcare system won’t change the healthcare system.” Rick Scott – Governor of Florida Taxation, healthcare and welfare's government employees, lobbyists, lawyers, accountants, advisers, politicians and nefarious bagmen have been fleecing healthcare patients, Americas businesses, local, states, the federal government's, taxpayers and citizens out of $trillions more annually than is needed to efficiently collect tax money, keep people healthy and compassionately end poverty. I would like to see Trump rip into the healthcare, taxation, welfare and water-management crises today before the 2016 elections. Businesses in the US will no longer be taxed or required to pay for healthcare or welfare costs. Companies from all over the world will flock to build manufacturing plants, do business and employe American workers in the US. Private sector businesses in the US will be able to expand to employ millions here in the US. Trump Day January 1, 2016 Trump has the right stuff to lead Americans to take action today that will result in the passage and signing by President Obama of Repeal and Replace legislation for healthcare, taxation, welfare and water-management reforms that will instantly improve all businesses and everyone's lives in the US and cut $trillions annually off of bureaucracies and compliance costs starting on January 1, 2016. The stakes are huge. Americans could take action today that will result in the passage and signing by President Obama of Repeal and Replace legislation for healthcare, taxation, welfare and water-management reforms that will joyously, profitably, compassionately and fiscally responsibly improve all businesses and everyone's lives in the US and cut $trillions annually off of bureaucracy and compliance costs for healthcare patients, businesses, local, states and the federal government's and taxpayers starting on January 1, 2016. The US will instantly become the worlds best tax haven for individuals and businesses and become the worlds most solid economy and the best place on the planet to live for all income and motivational levels, go fishing if that's your thing or try to be the richest entrepreneur on the planet; take a shot. Millions of offshore jobs could be brought back home and starting and operating new or existing businesses in the US can be much simpler, fair and more profitable and this friendly business and non intrusive government climate will provide the ultimate freedoms to just enjoy being alive. All Presidential Candidates could run the most patriotic campaign ever by helping President Obama and 535 legislators in Washington understand and then explain to voters how using government's low cost advantages like the VA uses to produce better patient outcomes than any other healthcare provider at any price and the VA costs are a mere fraction of the $3.8trillion that patients, businesses, local, states, federal government's and taxpayers were forced to pay for insurance, copays and healthcare last year. Repealing and Replacing all healthcare will make it possible to add an option for patients to have FreeObamaCare2.0 for every patient who needs or prefers to have free healthcare. FreeObama2.0 will slash a $trillion annually off of the $3.8trillion paid for insurance and healthcare in 2014, Replacing all taxation with sales taxes by passing the Fair Tax HR25 will abolish the IRS and all federal taxes and hopefully states will switch to sales taxes for all their revenue needs the Fair Tax will save multiple $trillions annually from what citizens and businesses spent for barbaric taxes and compliance costs last year. All welfare laws and programs will be Repealed and Replaced with lifetime generous and humane standardized weekly UBI payments to be given to every citizen in the US rich, poor, young or old who signs-up to receive weekly UBI's the money will be deposited in a personal debit card account set up for you. It will be up to you to decide how you want to spend your money. You may spend your UBI money prudently or foolishly, save it, pay for all of life's basics food, shelter etc., education, car payments, a vacation, to supplement low wages, assist in the event of technological unemployment dislocations or to offer endless choices, opportunities and freedoms that money coming automatically every week can buy. UBI automatic lifetime weekly cash payments will allow people who used food stamps and other forms of welfare assistance in the past to shop for what they want and pay for it with cash given to them every week like a regular paycheck and this simplified system will produce more than a $trillion of annual savings for businesses, all government's and taxpayers annually from what was spent last year on bureaucracies and compliance costs in 2014 and for decades before in the name of welfare without ending poverty. FreeObama2.0 and UBI payments will end stark poverty on January 1, 2016 for all US citizens. Repeal and Replace all water-management laws with a North American Water Alliance to transfer fresh water to prevent a drought armageddon and to open up an additional 8 million acres for food production and make possible multiple $trillions of annual GDP growth in Canada, The United States and Mexico forever and grow millions of additional private sector jobs in each country. $trillions of additional savings will instantly be available by allowing tons of local, states and federal employees to retire today lock the doors of their unneeded agencies and go home. January 1, 2016 1. The IRS will be abolished and all federal taxes will be repealed and replace with the Fair Tax HR25 sales taxes that we will pay when we shop for new retail purchases only, no taxes on used items, no more federal taxes to file or pay for individuals or businesses and hopefully states will repeal and replace their tax collections systems with Fair Tax sales tax style only systems in their states. 2. 2.US businesses will no longer be required to pay any taxes or pay for or be involved with healthcare or welfare in anyway. 3. FreeObamaCare2.0 will be available as an option that everyone in the US can use if they need or want free healthcare. 4. FreeObamaCare2.0 will compete for healthcare customers with nongovernment insurance and healthcare companies. 5. UBI unconditional basic income payments will replace all welfare payments and programs with lifetime weekly payments paid directly to citizens signing up for UBI's. All US citizens rich or poor young or old may sign up and receive weekly UBI payments throughout your lifetime, as if you have a rich grandmother who loves you very much, you can spend your UBI money anyway you want to for food, shelter, education, savings, to help start a business, anything you want ,no restrictions, money will be unconditionally deposited every week to a personal debit card account set up for you to supplement low wages, assist in the event of technological unemployment dislocations or to offer endless choices, opportunities and freedoms that money can buy. 6. FreeObama2.0 availability and generous and efficient UBI weekly cash payments will instantly end stark poverty for every US citizen on January 1, 2016 and will slash welfare taxes and compliance costs. 7. $trillions of additional savings will instantly be available by allowing tons of local, states and federal employees to retire today lock the doors of their unneeded agencies and go home. 8. States and local governments will not be required to pay for or be involved healthcare or welfare in anyway. Former state healthcare and welfare money can be spent for roads or any other state purposes. 9. Individuals will no longer be forced to purchase any health insurance or healthcare. 10. Workers can keep all of their pay checks no tax, social security or any other deductions. 11. Social security's solvency and promised payments will be maintained thanks to the Fair Tax sales tax collections. 12. Every US citizen can signup to receive monthly Fair Tax prebate payments between $200. to $1000. depending on family size. 13. The standardized monthly “Prebate payment” is designed to achieve tax fairness and to offset sales taxes paid up to the poverty level. 14. FreeObamaCare2.0 can be made available nationwide starting by the end of 2015 and everywhere in 2016 by purchasing 30% of the existing public and private hospital businesses from willing sellers to be converted to FreeObamaCare2.0 by using $500billion of Treasury and Federal Reserve money, like it was used to bail out the banks and Wall Street before the 2008 elections, using governments low cost advantages will knock a $trillion annually off of the $3.8trillions spent for healthcare in 2014 by patients, businesses, local, states, the federal government and taxpayers. 15. Everyone in the United States will have choices for access to far superior care and payment options than is being provided today. FREEOBAMACARE2.0 HEALTHCARE CHOICES Two basic healthcare choices for everyone in the US. 1. Use your own money to purchase anything you want to buy from zillions of existing healthcare industry hospitals, health insurers, doctors, drug stores, medications or medical supply sellers. 2. You can choose to use FreeObama2.0 a new free one stop single payer government operated healthcare system where all healthcare services and medications will be delivered to patients for free. Sales taxes collected from 50 million tourists and everyone shopping in the US will pay to maintain social security, FreeObamaCare2.0, UBI unconditional basic income payments and all of government's bills. Patients will be able to go back and forth between free government care or non government pay for care hospitals and insurance companies. Healthcare customers and patients can mix and match, use only free government care or purchase whatever insurance or care they want to buy from existing non government systems or they may choose to never use either system. Everyone in the US regardless of their citizenship or financial status, rich or poor, citizen or non-citizens, may choose to receive free care at government hospitals; no insurance purchases required, no copays, no restrictions because of preexisting medical conditions just ask at any government hospital and care will be provided for you and it will be free period! Government care will provide all inclusive birth to death healthcare including, primary, inpatient, outpatient, weight loss, substance abuse, psychiatric, long term elderly, extended nursing home care, free medications, dental, eye care, glasses hearing aids, and all medical devices. No one in the US will ever again be forced to go without healthcare or medications nor will any individual, business, or government at any level ever be without choices to avoid bankruptcy or lack of care or medications because of healthcare costs or availability. Americas Veterans Administration Hospitals using governments low cost advantages and evidenced based care meaning (prevention programs to keep you healthy) and (if you get sick or injured the VA does whatever it takes to make you well) and the VA has been producing better patient outcomes for years than any other providers at any cost and the VA's costs are a mere fraction of what todays healthcare industry is charging patients, businesses local, states, the federal government's and taxpayers for insurance and care. To control quality and costs no government funding will be paid to any insurance companies, HMO's or non government healthcare providers. Existing insurers and providers will no longer be required to provide indigent care nor be subjected to any government meddling, mandates, restrictions or pricing directions as they practice medicine. Employers will not be required to provide nor pay for any healthcare; however for anyone choosing to purchase any healthcare it will be tax deductible for the purchasers and tax free to the recipients. Todays existing costs paid by local, state and federal governments for healthcare can all be eliminated. REPEAL AND REPLACE ALL TAXATION switch to the FAIR TAX HR 25 sales tax. Abolish the IRS and all federal taxes and hopefully all state taxation systems will also be switched to sales tax only collections to be revenue-neutral with their current collections systems. The Fair Tax Act of 2015 HR25 will abolish the Internal Revenue Service and end all federal personal income taxes, all corporate income taxes, all payroll taxes, all self-employment taxes, including social security taxes, all capital-gains taxes all inheritance, estate and all gift taxes and replace everything with a single revenue-neutral personal consumption sales tax on all retail sales of new goods and services. Efficient, painless and non intrusive sales tax collections at the cash register when you buy stuff will provide the same amount of money to continue to pay government's bills. Social security will continue to pay the same benefits. Existing hidden value added taxes, ( 20plus%), that we pay today on everything we buy will be abolished. Workers will be able to keep all of their wages. No more forms to fill out, no more withholding, no taxes will be collected on used purchases and everyone in the US signing up for prebate payments can automatically receive a standardized monthly “Prebate Check” for offsetting sales taxes paid up to the poverty level. Fair Tax HR25 links https://www.govtrack.us/congress/bills/114/hr25/text http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/FairTax WELFARE REFORM replace with UBI UNCONDITIONAL BASIC INCOME lifetime payments Repeal and replace all welfare laws, programs, and bureaucracies with UBI unconditional basic income payments to be paid weekly to every citizen who signs up for payments. WATER-MANAGEMENT replace with NORTH AMERICAN WATER ALLIANCE Help is needed immediately to obtain water-management permits for a North American Water Alliance to construct dams, pipelines and water transfer systems in Canada, The United States and Mexico to prevent a drought armageddon if rains and snows fail to come again this winter as many as 100million people and millions of acres of food crops will literally be without water! NORTH AMERICAN WATER CRISIS CURE Environmental objections will need to be set aside to allow for the immediate construction of emergency water transfer systems. Capturing water below the Bonneville Dam, the last dam on the Columbia River before it continues into the Pacific Ocean, and piping it to Lake Shasta, California might be a quick emergency short term drought salvation for California cities and farms but both Washington and Oregon are having drought problems of their own that require massive water transfers. North American water infrastructure projects need to be built that have been delayed for more than 50 years and this drought is a rude wakeup call to action. More water is needed every year for growing populations world wide for people, food production, power generation, barge and ship transportation systems and ports, maintaining rivers, waterways and The Great Lakes levels, water quality, flushing, and flows, generating green power and to maintain and enrich environmental diversity. Canadian Prime Minister Harper, US President Obama and Mexican President Pena Nieto must find a way to put permits into the hands of entrepreneurs or governments who will raise the money to, build and operate water transfer projects around North American like the NAWAPA , GRAND and all of the other, or yet to be conceived, water and infrastructure projects that can no longer be kicked down the road and ignored. NAWAPA is a magnificent water project that was conceived by the Army Corp Of Engineers in the 1950s to benefit Canada, the United States, Mexico, the Great Lakes, provide water to supplement the Missouri-Mississippi, Colorado, Columbia, Rio Grande rivers and irrigation systems, it would provide water to recharge the Ogallala Aquifer and convert from withdrawing well water to gravity feed distribution to eliminate pumping costs and it would send water east across central Canada to form a navigable waterway connecting Alberta to the Great Lakes with the additional benefit of stabilizing the Great lakes water levels it would open up an additional 8million acres in Canada, the US and Mexico for food production. To keep water flowing in North American could cost $500billion to as much as $1trillion. The 100th Parallel runs through Canada, The United States and Mexico through Saskatchewan, North and South Dakota, through Dodge City Kansas and it continues south along the eastern side of the Texas Panhandle and then through eastern Mexico to the Equator and huge areas between this line and the Pacific Ocean from the North Pole to the Equator are in peril of having no water. Just look at a globe to see all of the cities, people and food production regions that feed the world that are between the 100th parallel and the Pacific Ocean in Canada, The United States and Mexico; without water nothing can survive. Engineers have shown us what is needed and with this drought nature is showing us what will happen if we do not use the problem solving skills available to us. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_American_Water_and_Power_Alliance http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Recycling_and_Northern_Development_Canal http://archive.larouchepac.com/nawapa-overview http://archive.larouchepac.com/nawapaxxi/overview http://archive.larouchepac.com/nawapa1964 http://digital.films.com/play/DLYT6H http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Great_Recycling_and_Northern_Development_Canal WATER VOTES 270 electoral votes will be needed to win the 2016 Presidential Election water crisis states have 347. California 55, Texas 34, Arizona 10, New Mexico 5, Washington 11, Oregon 7, Nevada 5, Utah 5, Idaho 4, Montana 3, Wyoming 3, Colorado, 9, North Dakota 3, South Dakota 3, Nebraska 5, Kansas 6, Oklahoma 7, Minnesota 10, Wisconsin 10, Iowa 7, Illinois 21, Missouri 6, Louisiana 9, Alabama 6, Mississippi 6, Tennessee Kentucky 11, West Virginia 8, Indiana 11, Ohio 20, Michigan 17, Florida 27, Alaska 3 will be able to sell water to Canada, the US and Mexico and all of these states, Canada and its Provenances could all be water sellers, users and purchasers. All of these legislative changes could happen before the end of 2015.

It will be interesting to see how the establishment handles Trump.

In the UK we had a new upstart, Nigel Farage and UKIP, who the establishment hated.

In the run up to the EU elections there were constant media smear campaigns against him and his party.

But these only made him more popular as I think every nation is very tired of its existing establishment.

When it came to the national elections they tried a different tack, they just didn't mention Nigel Farage or UKIP at all.

Unfortunately, this worked very well and UKIP got almost no seats in Parliament.

If you are not mentioned in the press you are quickly forgotten.
