"Secret" NSA Map Shows Five Years Of Chinese Cyber Attacks

Tyler Durden's picture

Back in May it was revealed that Chinese hacker spies had taken over the Penn State University engineering department.

No, really.

Here’s a recap:

"Penn State offers a potential treasure trove of technology that’s already being developed with partners for commercial applications. The breach suggests that foreign spies could be using universities as a backdoor to U.S. commercial and defense secrets. The hackers are so deeply embedded that the engineering college’s computer network will be taken offline for several days while investigators work to eject the intruders," Bloomberg said at the time.

The breach, which the school’s president called “an incredibly serious situation," was allegedly perpetrated by "state-sponsored hackers" acting as "foreign spies" and was reportedly uncovered by the FBI late last year. After a lengthy investigation (which cost the university millions) school officials are now concerned that information from Penn State's Applied Research Laboratory (which has worked with the US Navy for the better part of a century) may have been compromised in the operation.

And that would hardly be the end of it.

Two months later, China was also blamed for what Washington called the "largest theft of US government data ever" and just this week, the US said the same hackers responsible for stealing information on government employees had also breached American Airlines.

The flurry of cyber accusations comes as the Pentagon looks to crack down on "cyber adversaries" including China, Iran, Russia (where "organized crime syndicates" were blamed for an IRS breach in May), and of course North Korea which allegedly committed the most heinous act of cyber terrorism yet when hackers from Pyongyang sabotaged Seth Rogen and James Franco’s "The Interview" last year.

Fortunately, Ashton Carter is on the ball and has developed a new cyber strategy which includes the "offensive" use of cyber warfare where necessary to defend the country’s interests.

As you can see, the list of "bad guys" is the same (China, Russia, Iran, North Korea) in cyber space as it is in the non-virtual world, and just to show you how "bad" the presumed ring leader of the Axis of Cyber Evil truly is, here’s an exclusive look at a secret NSA map (obtained by NBC) which shows all Chinese cyber attacks on US targets over the last five years:

More color from NBC:

A secret NSA map obtained exclusively by NBC News shows the Chinese government's massive cyber assault on all sectors of the U.S economy, including major firms like Google and Lockheed Martin, as well as the U.S. government and military.

The map uses red dots to mark more than 600 corporate, private or government "Victims of Chinese Cyber Espionage" that were attacked over a five-year period, with clusters in America's industrial centers. The entire Northeast Corridor from Washington to Boston is blanketed in red, as is California's Silicon Valley, with other concentrations in Dallas, Miami, Chicago, Seattle, L.A. and Detroit. The highest number of attacks was in California, which had almost 50.

Each dot represents a successful Chinese attempt to steal corporate and military secrets and data about America's critical infrastructure, particularly the electrical power and telecommunications and internet backbone. And the prizes that China pilfered during its "intrusions" included everything from specifications for hybrid cars to formulas for pharmaceutical products to details about U.S. military and civilian air traffic control systems, according to intelligence sources.

So China is apparently planning to build Chevy Volt knockoffs, manufacture medicine, and hijack air traffic control towers, among other nefarious activities.

Whether all of this is cause for the Pentagon to activate the "offensive" component of its brand new cyber strategy remains to be seen, but in the meantime, if you see this guy sneaking into a campus computer lab, say something:

Maps like this are inherently inaccurate, since it is technically a near impossibility to determine the actual sources of the attacks, even for the NSA.

So there are a lot of hacked computers in China participating in cyber attacks. So what? That tells you exactly nothing about who is controlling these hacked computers. I'll tell you right now that there were hacked computers from pretty much every country with internet access (including the US) that participated in the very same attacks.

The sole purpose of maps like this is to tell you who the US government wants you to fear. They contain no other useful information.

Techno-propaganda like this is "leaked" to NBC News because the NSA knows that NBC is credulous enough to run with it without asking any questions.

Tune in next time for another episode of Invisible Enemy Du Jour.

And don't forget to be afraid.

...  perhaps China only wants to make sure that the US would not dare "steal" their beloved little farms on the Spratlys ... like how the following properties (listed below) ended up as "US properties" ... (which, compared to the US land-grab listed below, Spratly-islands-Chinese-land-grab would be kindergarten stuff) ...

... Kingdom of Hawaii and these unincorporated US "properties" ... Palmyra Atoll, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan, Puerto Rico which is now Puerto Pobre, Virgin Islands, Samoa, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Wake Island, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Serranilla Bank, Bajo Nuevo Bank & Diego Garcia(?).

... the Chinese must've learned from the Soviets ... without the Russkies protecting Cuba during the Bay of (greedy) Pigs invasion, not only Guantanamo, but the whole islands of Cuba, would now be asking for bailouts from the US banksters ... like that experienced by Puerto Pobre ...

... however, this not-so-"secret" map is probably just another No-Such-Agency's ploy of prolonging their usefulness ... thus, more fiat-funding from the MIC trough ...

Yup, in 1995 a Pentagon spokesman said China was no threat, as America was 25 years ahead of them in missile technology.

In 1996, Clinton handed over to China over-the-horizon-radar-targeting, to bring their missile tech on par.

In the early 2000s, Geo. Bush allowed China to buy the entire factory in Ohio which manufactured those classified precision ball bearings used in advanced submarines and land vehicles.

Ain't National Security grand?

Clinton also allowed the sale of a McDonnell-Douglas plant in Ohio early in his first term that was instrumental in the manufacture of missiles and aircraft wings. The factory contained machine equipment on 5-axis. This gives a higher degree of accuracy in the manufacture of aircraft structural components.

The Administration preliminarily approved Catic's purchase of machine equipment from the McDonnell Douglas Corporation in late August 1994; the equipment was supposed to be used in Beijing to make civilian jetliners. The approval came about the time Commerce Secretary Ronald H. Brown left for China, where he helped persuade Chinese officials to keep their commitment to spend $1 billion on jetliners from McDonnell Douglas.

But Pentagon critics of the sale had earlier said they believed that the Chinese wanted the sensitive equipment, which included giant machine tools to shape and bend large aircraft parts, to improve their military capability, Administration officials said. At the time, the Chinese press had reported a Chinese Government plan to cut jetliner production in half, which would have reduced the civilian need for the American equipment.

I am astounded that US companies and our .gov cannot build systems that are more resilient vs. hackers.  Even we non-programmers know how to prevent SQL-Injection attacks for example.

Or is it that .govs, .edus and companies are just asleep and/or not incentivizing cyber security properly?

Baffling.  And stupid.  Each red dot on the map is a stain.

EDIT: And why don't they ever attack the IRS?  They seem pretty lax over there......

GeezerGeek's picture

A primary cause of vulnerability is laziness on the part of the programmers. Or maybe they're under too much pressure to produce code and have insufficient time to properly test. Using your somewhat odd example of SQL injection attacks, they can succeed becuase the input from a user is not properly parsed prior to being passed in a SQL query to a database. If a programmer is lazy he can assume the user is entering the requested data correctly. A malicious user can try entering data that includes valid SQL query code. If the programmer does not verify the validity of the input bad things can happen. See, for examples, http://www.sqlinjection.net/tutorial/. I'm curious what you meant by "we non-programmers know how to prevent SQL-Injection attacks...".

Similarly, programmers (I use the term generically to include anyone who creates an app of any sort) often rely on the work of others to complete their own particular apps. How does one ever tell if that other code is secure? The heartbleed vulnerability became a major cause for alarm because it was based on a flaw in the OpenSSL cryptographic library. This code, although open source, was assumed by just about everyone to be a secure tool for transport layer security (TLS) over the internet. Except, if I recall correctly, the code was the work of only one or two guys, and was never thoroughly vetted for exception handling. We also know of bugs in Flash Player, but how often do we view videos still using that? And Android phones are now known to be exploitable via text message...I could go on, but unless you're writing in machine assembler code and not calling any external libraries, you're potentially at risk. (Even then, of course, who knows what kind of malicious stuff may be embedded in the firmware or microcode?)

Another major cause of vulnerability is the internal agent. Many data breaches of the past were traced back to persons working within the organization. Think of the things exposed by Snowden (and I'm only using him as a well-known example of an insider, without saying whether he is a good guy or a bad guy.) Then think of all the Chinese (or Russian, or whatever; this is not a racist point) who work in IT departments or otherwise have access to sensitive information.

There is no solution as long as humans remain flawed. Heck, we don't even know who the real 'hackers' are, or if these aren't false flag hacks. (Consider the questionable 'hacking' of Planned Parenthood.)

Re your IRS query (with a smirk on my face): It's hard to hack an organization whose hardware is destroyed when critical data is about to be accessed.

Indeed I do not program, but I do use a database to analyze our company's sales.  I ran into the SQL Injection Attack just in the course of my own reading.

Thank you for explaining some of the intricacies of programming and its vulnerabilities.

If you're truly astounded by something, there is almost always more to the story than you know.  Also, if you non-programmers are that much better than programmers at doing programming stuff, why are you not programming?  Software developers, particularly ones who specialize in security, make a ton of money.  I did that for a while...but the stress got to me and now I'm back to being a regular code-monkey who doesn't make as much but enjoys his life a whole lot more.

If I had a quarter for every time a non-programmer thought they could do a better job, I'd probably be off fishing in the Bahamas right now.

Hmmmm.....incentivize them?

So the private sector and public sector in Amerika has offshored countless jobs there, countless technology there, and considerable investment there, so the answer is to offshore even more?????

Well that's nuthin'!  Hadji, or maybe Jose, from the "Windows Technical Support Department" just called me offering to show me all the things that are wrong with my computer.

Maybe they called Penn State, too.  I guess Penn State should have taken them up on their very generous offer.  I know I'm glad I did!  Now, my CPU fan is runnin' full blast, just like its supposed to.

Heeeeyyyy!  One of the red dots on the map up there is my house!

And, now you know why its referred to as Happy Valley.

I'm amazed NAMBLA hasn't opened a branch office in Happy Valley.

What would the map of ISRAELI cyber espionage look like?

Well, maybe something like this:

http://www.timesofisrael.com/new-cyber-bug-targeting-middle-east-but-isr...

I know, I know... it's racist to discuss Israeli spying because they're juice.

http://www.newsweek.com/israel-flagged-top-spy-threat-us-new-snowdennsa-...

"Israel runs one of the most aggressive and damaging espionage networks targeting the U.S., yet public discussion about it is almost nil."

http://www.alternet.org/story/130891/breaking_the_taboo_on_israel%27s_sp...

- True in the MSM, true on ZH.

Chinese hacking is the biggest in terms of number of incidents [there may be as many Chinese hackers as Israeli Juice, after all]. But Uncle Sugar doesn't give them billions a year and the Dragon isn't trying to get the US into wars all over the world.

Why would the Chinese need to sneak into anything? All they need to do is accept the invitations being offered.

The OPM "hack" wasn't a hack at all - access was granted by the government to Chinese and other foreign sysadmins. While the US government itself doesn't directly hire H1-Bs, it hires enormous numbers of contracters who do.

The door is open and it's got a sign on it that says "Come on in". Also the NSA made sure that locks don't work.

All the points of security failure are located squarely within the boundaries of the District of Columbia.
