President Obama Explains How His "Clean Power Plan" Does Not Make Him "Nation's Greatest Destroyer" - Live Feed

Tyler Durden's picture

Ironically on the day when another coal company collapses into bankruptcy, President Obama begins the pitch for his "Clean Power Plan" which Murray Energy CEO Robert Murray described as "biazrre", blames for the collapse in the coal industry, and has now filed five federal lawsuits against the president who Murray believes is "the nation's greatest destroyer."

Live Feed.. (due to speak at 1415ET)

As we previously noted, The President, you see, is on a "bizarre personal and political" quest to destroy not only the coal industry, but the entire country and according to Murray, "radical environmentalists, liberal elitists, [and] Hollywood characters" aren’t doing anything to help the situation.

And make no mistake, this isn’t about money for Murray, this is all about the people. "Mr. Obama's actions are a human issue to me, as I know the names of many of the Americans whose jobs and family livelihoods are being destroyed," Murray said, adding that "these Americans are my employees."

Or at least they were his employees. Murray laid off 21% of his company back in May, with the majority of the cuts coming in West Virginia, which is staring down a $195 million budget gap thanks to the slide in coal prices.

Murray believes these job cuts are the fault of the Obama administration and, thankfully, he’s got some concrete arguments to support his contention that the President is colluding with Hollywood characters and certain "contributors" in an effort to "get control of the availability, reliability and cost of electricity."

from SNL:

[Murray] said President Barack Obama's administration has issued regulations that illegally bypass the states and their utility commissions, the U.S. Congress and the Constitution in favor of putting the U.S. EPA in charge of the nation's electric grid. Murray, speaking at a Republican gathering at the July 22 Lincoln Day Dinner, touted his company's four lawsuits being brought against the administration's Clean Power Plan, an effort to rein in carbon dioxide emissions.

Murray continued, saying that the coal workers affected by Obama's policies are among the highest paid in the regions where they live, but also have no one to sell their homes to when they lose their jobs.

"Thus, these people are prohibited from working and fall to the negative side of the economic ledger for the rest of their lives," Murray said. "This is not the America that I have always cherished. Well, I am obviously not giving up. Nor should you. We have the law, science, economics, cold hard energy facts and the Constitution on our side. Our cause is right. It is right for the coal industry and our communities and America. … We must continue to do whatever we can to overcome the insanity of our current government."

Murray goes on to say that the scope of EPA guidelines on coal boarders on the absurd. In support of this contention, he cites the fact that the agency's regulations are 38 times longer than the universally accepted standard for modern enviornmental law - the Bible: "EPA regulations alone total 25 million words, 38 times more than those in the holy Bible."

Not saying he had half a brain but President Carter pretty much said those exact words in 1979, making coal our national energy.

A clean power plan would be based largely on clean coal generation. Sure there is only a couple of hundred years of coal left.
Even cleaner , would be hydro electricity.

Does anyone not see through this bullshit? It's not rocket science : flue gas scrubbing is well established technology , even if you think (stupidly) that CO2 is poisonous at atmospheric concentrations.

Obama has not destroyed coal. Coal has destroyed coal. Who the hell uses coal anymore? I don't mean the commercial users, I mean regular folks...

People DID used to use coal for home heating, coal was very popular. And it still has its uses, just not nearly as many of them. The outlook for coal has been grim since I was a kid, and that's a long time ago. Obama was making ca-ca in his pants. The industry has had plenty of time to make the necessary adjustments.

It has not been an industry with any growth potential for decades. We aren't going back to the sea of smokestacks days...

They SHOULD have been investing resources into finding a better way to USE the coal than pulling it out of the ground to burn. That will never go back to being a popular use for it...if you and your neighbors are heating with coal, then soon you and your whole neighborhood is covered with greasy soot...that's the reason other heating methods are now used. Nobody WANTS to return to coal for heating. It will remain a niche fuel, used for a few applications, because it is inefficient and filthy when burned.

That being said, it obviously is a material with "properties"...It is possible that some yet-undiscovered use exists for this stuff, and better ways to consume it besides burning. All the effort and resources should have been put to finding these, instead of mounting a futile defense of a dying model.

Are you really really really really THAT stupid?

Of course they don't mean coal for private use.

When they talk about coal, they ONLY mean industrial use for electricity plants.

It's the BURNING of the coal, foolish one, not the useage. Of course we aren't going back to household useage, and no one WOULD for the reasons I stated. That's why the industry is dying...that industrial useage can't support it. That industry grew and developed during a time when coal WAS used widely. The customer base has shrunk considerably since then.

Even for that remaining industrial use, burning the shit is a filthy and inefficient way to release coal's energy. In a world where there ARE alternatives, it will NEVER be an easy sell.

The business model for coal is dead. Time to come up with a new one if you want coal to stay relevant.

Well, my forge says otherwise. Want I should start making charcoal out of trees instead? That's why there are very few old growth forests in England.

In 2014, the United States generated about 4,093 billion kilowatthours of electricity.1  About 67% of the electricity generated was from fossil fuels (coal, natural gas, and petroleum).

Major energy sources and percent share of total U.S. electricity generation in 2014:

  • Coal = 39%
  • Natural gas = 27%
  • Nuclear = 19%
  • Hydropower = 6%
  • Other renewables = 7%
    • Biomass = 1.7%
    • Geothermal = 0.4%
    • Solar = 0.4%
    • Wind = 4.4%
  • Petroleum = 1%
  • Other gases < 1%
  • Does that answer your question who uses coal???

This is just another industrial transition, like the mass migration of African Americans out of the south to the rust belt, before it was rusty.  Then there was the mass migration of rust belt workers to other parts of the country for less pay and benefits.  Now, coal is fading.  There have been 4 or 5 bankruptcies of major coal companies lately because it is a dying industry, not because of any Obama inspired conspiracy.  It is a filthy industry that extracts the filthiest form of energy out of the earth by taking off mountain tops and dumping them into valleys.

Meanwhile renewable energy sources are cost competitive and clean, and are become moreso.  The truth is that we are in the midst of another energy revolution.  The renewable energy industry is scaling up and factories are being built in many parts of the country.   I feel bad for those folks who depended on coal, but they, like all the other American migrants since the industrial revolution, have to move on.  We'll all be better off for it.

There is no such thing as climate change.  Ice age forecast in the 70s.  Pure horse shit.  One massive solar storm causes more "climate change" than 200 years of world industry.  Mount Pinatubo caused more climate change than 100 years of American coal burning.  And Obama flying his jets to Alaska will add more carbon foot print that 100 peeps will in their entire lifetimes.  Fuck "climate change" and the clowns that espouse the nonsense.

Wind farms ? Ha . They never will return the capital required. Solar panels? Solar panel farms ? Ask Solyndra how that went. Wait until your electric bill is 650 a month ! Oh , my electricity provider , who in 15 years has never been paid a day late , sends me a monthly average usage compared to my Eco friendly neighbors . I am always 30% higher . My pool is sparkling and a comfy 84 degrees all summer.
