De Blasio's Keynesian Utopia: Giant Sinkhole Devours Brooklyn Intersection

Tyler Durden's picture

Forget the broke window fallacy, meet the broken Brooklyn utopia. We are sure Mayor De Blasio will be cock-a-hoop this morning that a giant sinkhole has appeared in one of his boroughs - swallowing an entire intersection - as what is better for the economy than filling in holes created by a total lack of infrastructure spend with other people's money...

As NBC New York reports,

A giant sinkhole opened up in a Brooklyn intersection Tuesday morning, halting traffic on the busy roadway.

The sinkhole swallowed up most of the intersection of Fifth Avenue and 64th Street in Sunset Park at about 8 a.m., according to the Office of Emergency Management.

Traffic on Fifth Avenue, one of Sunset Park's busiest roadways, has been diverted while crews work to repair the gaping hole.

*  *  *

Welcome to De Blasio's New York... with 19 shot in Brooklyn this weekend along with an outbreak of Legionnaire's disease.

Yeah but sinkholes in Florida (and Bowling Green KY - The Corvette Museum) are due to the karst limestone geology (dissolution of rock by groundwater) while that's not the case in NYC since it's underlain by granite and schist bedrock.

This NYC sinkhole is probably due to lack of maintenance of the infrastructure and a leaking sewer or water main eroding away the backfill.

You might want to take a Geology 101 class before you open your De Blasio lovin' piehole again.

That area doesn't have much (or any) bedrock. It's southern Brooklyn, aka southern Long Island, which is a big glacial moraine. Mostly sand and loose rock that piled up at the end of the ice age, forming Long Island. There have been a few sinkholes in the general area in the last few years, though yes, leaking sewer systems have been among the reasons. (Source: I live near where this happened)

I'm not seriously advocating for NYC to 'disappear' nor do I want anything bad to happen to all the people there. I refer to the parasitic Wall Street crowd that exists in it's present form entirely due to fed policies. And NYC politicians, from whom nothing but had ideas originate. Gun control, stop and frisk, and a city where a shocking amount of people work in made up, make work govt jobs. The arrogance and mentality of most who come from there is off putting as well. I've seen that city once and never care to go back. It's hard to imagine a more 'pro big govt' crowd in America than what exists in NYC.

Without those things I listed above, we'd all be better off.

Leftists cannot run anything properly, they are clueless no matter where in the world you find them.  The same reason the infrastructure is going to hell in cesspool NYC is the same reason that Venezuela's largest oil refinery can barely operate at 50% capacity.  When you have someone who is only educated in radical marxism, this is the result every time, decade after decade.

Not sure why this has only gotten the two downvotes. Nothing you said is inaccurate. Drive to your nearest big city anywhere in America and you see the exact same thing. First the city is taken over by black people , who then elect (mostly black) leftist 'progressives' to rule them, then you get the so called 'white flight' as the middle class and above who can afford to choose to leave the city, and what you get is the modern day leftist run utopia.

All part of the plan. When Bloomberg changed (paid for) the laws to be changed so he could run (pay for) a 3rd term, it was going to be all down hill from there.

Blomberg was such a power crazed mayor (midget), he left the cupboard bare for effective successors. Nobody who could be a good mayor would work for Bloomberg.

The gap left by Bloomberg was so wide that Anthony (tiny) Weiner was intially tipped (no pun intended) to become Mayor by the DEM party machine in NYC. Weiner was found to be showing his Weiner to nderage girls via the Internet and subsequently sent to the side lines. lesbian City Council person Quin was next up, but she proved to be too "butch" for the neo Bolsheviks with some "mothers and their babies" sarcasm and was shunted by the DEM party. That really only left De Blasio who only real claim to fame was to be Hillary Clinton's campaign manager for her NY State Senate run.

De Blasio back ended his way to Mayor. He is an affable, low brow moron who is an avowed socialist. he can not manage himslef out of a feckin' pizza box. Very limited skill set... pretty much only knows how to take someone ele's money and misspend it. I mean c'mon ... he was an undergrad at NYU in Urban Development (how to take a bribe as a city official) and then a Master's degree in a similar bull shit curriculum at Columbia.

He is so incompetent as to make Obama look like an engineer.

I was not aware that Columbia University admitted morons.

Columbia does so every year. C'mon...Obama supposedly attended Columbia. They have their special acceptance policies.

"[Schools] have their special acceptance policies."

True, but in the case of schools like Columbia, those "special acceptance policies" generally apply at the undergraduate level rather than at the graduate level.  Also, such policies are generally reserved either for students whose families have a "special relationship" with the school, or are there to support other goals such as student body diversity.  I don't think de Blasio fell into either of those categories.

But DeBlasio has such an "All American" family - a Negress Lesbian wife, couple of hi yaller mixed pickaninneys - even the governor of Maine is jealous.

I bet NY consumers paid to replace that pipe in fees that broke 10X, now they'll just replace the broken part and spend 10X as much as a private contractor could do it.

This notion of "other people's money" bugs me.

By definition urban living entails sharing services--community wise--outside one's own private estate--that require building and maintaining--the commons. As those services in infrastructure and buildings in principle serve all living there, generation after generation, it goes without saying that those community members pay for it with their money in form of taxes; aka putting it in a common pot given to the "elected" whose expenditure they are accountable for to their constituants.

Given that, we can debate about such and such expenditure and its efficiency like in all human systems, but we cannot say that those expenditures were made with "other people's money".

They were made with the COMMUNITY's money paid out as taxes (voted for) for shared capital expenditures and operational services. And that is normal.

The only other solution is : there are NO COMMONS. Land is taken by the most powerful and its a neo-feudal MAFIA type governance system.

"Other people's money" is the price you pay for not living in a "stand and deliver" MAFIA economy.

That the commons are now managed by the crooks, is like Greece today; the state or municipality as a PUBLIC service has de facto ceased to exist!

The OLigarchs own all infrastructure and now we are serfs. The notion of other people's money has ALSO ceased to exist as the other people, aka the 99% are destitute.

Those who talk about "other people's money " in the current context are false noses for the Oligarchs.

We need it so that "other people's money" work for all, not for the few!

Grow up  ZH posters!

your problem lies in the fact that all the common money put up for "the commons" has fallen into the giant sinkhole called government.  It goes to their salaries, perks, and pensions.

Somehow our grandparents put up money and the "commons" were built.  Now the government takes many times the amount of our money and nothing gets built.  With billions and billions and billions collected we can't even repair what our prior generations were able to build.

Never got to vote for any of the major taxes... ooops,,, community money. No one paying taxes today got to vote for the 16th amendment,,, got to vote for the Federal Reserve,,, got to vote for property taxes (the tax itself,,, not increases or decreases),,, the sales taxes,,, etc, etc.

The deductions on my check don't mention community,,, I don't even have the right to touch the money,,, it's taken out before I am paid. If I don't pay my community property tax the man with a gun, (that the community paid for), comes and kicks me off "my property" and/or takes me to jail and fines the shit out of me.

Then I see the recipients of my community money driving around in brand new F250's, Chargers and GM Escalades,,, some in Limo's earning more than me,,, fully funded 100% health insurance,,, Retirement at 55 with full pay I get this sinking feeling that maybe my community money is being wasted? ,,, especially after paying for front end repair after hitting a pot hole.

Of course I tend to lean towards the cynical side so,,, maybe it is all wonderful...

I'm still trying to figure out how this statement makes any sense.  Of course, given that it's a comment on an article that didn't make any sense either -- not to mention being written in broken English -- I guess it's hardly surprising.

The area is mostly Asian now. Great food. Good hard working people.
