Dramatic Footage Of Saudi Tanks Invading Yemen

Tyler Durden's picture

There are competing accounts as to exactly what happened at the Al Anad airbase in Yemen on Monday, where Saudi-backed forces loyal to President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi reportedly routed Houthi rebels, marking the latest in a series of setbacks for the Iran-backed group which forced Hadi to flee to Riyadh earlier this year, plunging Yemen into a bloody civil war.

According to the Houthis, coalition forces were "crushed" and their vehicles destroyed, but a spokesman for the Popular Resistance said most of the base was in coalition hands. Here’s WSJ:

Forces fighting for a Saudi-led military coalition in Yemen have defeated the country’s Houthi rebels at a strategic southern air base, the Yemeni defense ministry said Tuesday.

The Houthis denied that the base had fallen. However, if it has been captured this would extend a recent turning of the tide in favor of the coalition in the four-month-old conflict.

The defense ministry said the operation at Al Anad, a large complex from which the U.S. had launched drone attacks against Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula before the recent instability, was "a true representation of national will and noble sacrifices that are being made to liberate Yemen from the grip of overthrowing militias."

A report Tuesday by the Houthi-run Saba news agency denied that Al Anad base had been taken, citing an unnamed military official. The Houthis had “crushed all [coalition] offensives” against the base and destroyed scores of military vehicles,  Houthi spokesman Nasruddin Amer said Monday evening.

If confirmed, the turn of fortunes in favor of the coalition at Al Anad build upon a string of recent gains in the south by the allies, which include Saudi Arabia, the U.A.E., Qatar, Bahrain, Egypt and a number of other Arab states.

Houthi rebels have been driven from Aden in recent weeks, setting the stage for coalition forces to make a further push northward into other Houthi-controlled areas.

Here's footage of the actual battle courtesy of RT:

And here's footage of Saudi tanks pushing north as the coalition offensive gathers steam:

*  *  *

Importantly, Saudi and coalition boots are now officially on the ground in Yemen, under the guise of tank trainers. Here's The Washington Post:

Saudi and Emirati troops are assisting Yemeni pro-government forces at al-Anad by operating many of the tanks and sophisticated military equipment, military officials said.

A Yemeni military official said thus far, few Yemeni troops have been trained in operating the tanks that have arrived by sea from Gulf allies in recent weeks. He added that the Yemeni military sought help from coalition countries in the al-Anad operation, calling them "partners in the liberation operation of Aden and other provinces."

Obviously, that seems like a rather transparent way of saying that the recent "turning of the tide" in Yemen may indeed be attributable to the fact that the Houthis are now fighting an open war with the Saudi army which turns out to be quite a bit more challenging than urban warfare in the backalleys of Aden with poorly trained Hadi holdouts.

In any event, we suppose the real question is whether Iran is willing to stand by and watch as the Houthis are dismantled by Saudi Arabia, or whether Tehran decides it's time to provide more than just "logistical support", at which point Yemen's proxy "conflict" will officially morph into a regional sectarian war.

Here is a partial list of Saudi Arabia's crimes in Yemen:

At least 3,500 have been killed as a result of the Saudi-led war, launched on March 26 of this year. Some 1,700 of these have been confirmed as civilians, according to the UN, with some 3,800 more civilians confirmed wounded.

Nearly 80 percent of the Yemeni population faces conditions of starvation, near starvation, and/or lack of reliable access to drinking water.

More than 1.2 million Yemenis have been forced to flee their homes by the war. At least 50,000 of the displaced have fled the country entirely, seeking refuge in neighboring countries of Oman, Djibouti, Somalia and Sudan.

Responsibility for the bloodshed and humanitarian disaster in Yemen lies squarely with Saudi Arabia, the other Gulf monarchies and their backers in Washington. While technically headed by the Saudi monarchy, the military onslaught against Yemen is a direct outgrowth of US imperial policy in the Middle East.

The would-be "soldiers" in these videos seem like a disorganized, butt-scratching rabble. It seems to be the same in Iraq and everywhere else.  The puppeteers don't seem particularly interested in deploying a genuinely trained, organized force that would engage a specific set of targets cleanly and decisively as part of a politically legitimate mission, sanctioned by the local electorate. Instead, their mission is apparently to hand out firepower indiscriminately and encourage the puppets to wander around, firing in the general direction of mystery targets and filming YouTube videos: senseless chaos. I remember the same thing when I worked for a psychopath years ago. He gave orders to do things that seemed nonsensical to the rational managers and staff, who didn't understand that the purpose was to PREVENT order, to PERPETUATE chaos. (The organization was ruined.)

Enough of this "training" and other bullshit. It's time to bring the "trainers" back and grapple with real problems at home. You'd think more soldiers would wise up.

I wonder who the hell Saudi Arabia found to send to Yemen to train tankers. Most of the armor in Saudi Arabia had Yemeni crews (but Saudi commanders).

In any case, Yemen is packed to the gills with Iranian ATGMs. I would not want to be in any of those Saudi tanks (while they still exist) in Yemen.

The strategy is laughable anyway. The Houthis are basically tough mountain people and fight like guerillas. Armor is useless there except for flattening villages, destroying infrastructure and starving civilians. In other words, it's genocide armor, not battle armor.

Yemen is Saudi Arabia's Afghanistan - a useless, unwinnable meatgrinder with no rational objective except the (re)installation of the former corrupt U.S. puppet. A true crime against humanity unfolding right before our eyes (well, at least the anti-Iranian parts CNN choses to show us).

I'm still rooting for the Houthis, nmewn. They've taken a hell of a pounding for what - four months or so now? They seem pretty resilient and they are fighting for their home turf.

I would argue that air support is useless in Yemen. They can't use any close-in stuff like helicopters - too many shoulder-fired SAMs there. And an F-15 isn't going to be of a lot of help if some Houthi pops up in a third-floor window and sends an ATGM into the nearest tank, then hauls ass out of there. Armor will fail for the same reason the air campaign is failing - there's really nothing to bomb but civilians and infrastructure.

Saudi armor and tactics were always for massed armor engagements against Iraqi or Iranian armor. They (along with air support) would be good for taking and holding the few fixed positions there - like the former Yemeni military bases and air fields - but not so good for chasing light infantry around the countryside and mountains. And whether Yemenis liked their former president Hadi or not, the Saudis are almost universially hated by Yemenis today for the air campaign's indiscriminate civilian deaths.

The Saudis and their armor will be picked off one by one with IEDs and ATMs unless they level the cities or avoid them completely. Sure, it will be effective if they can roll over massed Houthi formations or their fortified positions, but there isn't many of those. Armor has it's place, but that place isn't in Yemen against basically everyone. I say it's an act of desperation to gain more leverage in whatever kind of peace negotiations they're scheming for this fall. Saudi Arabia's internal problems are mounting every day - they're going to need those tanks and crews back in Riyadh pretty damn soon.

P.S. We still have some Mullah Fan Club t-shirts left, but only in size small. I guess the Saturday morning cartoons ain't going over too well as an indoctrination tool. Needless to say, the child canings were a complete disaster for our membership drive. I warned them about that one.

As well, an aircraft could never win ground, it just flies in the air, it has no effect on who owns/contols a piece of turf. It is outdated and useless if used in this fashion.

I wish it was faster that people woke up to the fact that it is the Western Axis of Evil that is going around doing ALL the terror and murder.

Wrong, Newman. In 2006 Hezbollah crushed Israeli tanks with Kornet anti-tank missiles.

Reason you can pretend it didn't happen is that the losing side happens to own the media.

All the IDF could do, in typical fashion, was to bomb civilians and throw a hissy-fit about how while in their attempt to invade Lebanon they were victims of aggression. Because the holocaust, of course.

I don't think so.  The heavy ones are M-1s brought to you by General Dynamics (Crown-Krinsky family who are big Obola and also LBJ supporters.  Very close to the whacking of JFK - see F-111 scandal and big AIPAC supporters).

The smaller BMP types could be Bradleys.  Russian Kornet and Metis anti-tank missiles can open an M-1, Merkava or just about anything else plus a Bradley.

Definely not Merkavas...  They seem to import a hodge-podge of French, US German and even Brazilian armaments (as well as apparently manufactuing some of their own armored cars).  What I didn't see was much reactive armor on the tanks.  Iran will notice that too....

That's why I gave him a green arrow.  It was funny.

But, I used to be an 0351 (Anti-tank Assaultman) at a different point in my life.  So, please forgive me for pointing out a few things.  A Merkava would actually be well suited for Yemen's terrain, better than an M1 when they get to the hills.  But tanks will just be coffins unless they have infantry support.  There are lots of Syrian videos to illustrate the point.

From the side, any heavy missile can get trough.

And from the rear, any RPG.

Nevertheless, a tandem charge may be needed in case of slat armor or double armor.

KSA has spent $ billions bombing and murdering people in the poorest country in the Middle East, using mostly US supplied weapons and logistics support. Now they are using US supplied tanks to kill more people. US taxpayers have spent $ Trillion on wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, Libya, Syria all still ongoing; in Yemen KSA serves as a proxy force to US/NATO. Make no mistake, this is a battle for control of the choke point at the entrance to the Red Sea from the Gulf of Aden. In the 1960s, Egypt entered into a long, costly quagmire in Yemen. Egyptian president Nasser intervened in Yemen in support of a republican coup led by military officers seeking to oust the country's monarchy in 1962. Egypt ended up suffering thousands of casualties in this campaign. (link: www.washingtonpost.com/news/worldviews/wp/2015/03/28/how-yemen-was-once-...)

Let’s watch how KSA fares in this war 6 months from now.

The Empire never died it just mutated into a hybrid Empire to survive into it's planned NWO iteration.

The Empire never died - VALIS "Vast Active Life ntelligence System" aka Humanity ruled by the usual suspects.

lol, Why do you think the Rome had the Roman Catholic Church call it MASS ?

Fact: Every Saudi dictator has been picked by the UK

Philip K. Dick had it right in 81'.

My understanding of the Saudis is they generally do not work. They hire foreigners to run their infrastructure. Are Phillipino women driving their US built tanks?

Possibly, but the Saudis act like they're doing something when they take pics for social media?

I was thinking the same thing....what dumphuck asshole would sign on to be a tanker in this day and age?     Probably the only thing more assinine would be sitting on an Aircraft Carrier.

When all else fails, you can always pay half of the poor people to kill the other half.

It doesn't matter a whit if it's rocks, swords, rifles, or tanks.

If you prefer, you will run with an helmet and a flak jacket incapable to stop a little caliber bullet just next to the tank.

Al-queda & ISIS were created by USA

to force Saudis under submission

as a puppet and a leashed dog

as well as fool them to buy expensive

arms , ammo, fighter planes , tanks etc

in order to take back their money

they gave to saudis for oil.

----

Now saudis will spend their ammo & arms

then they would buy more from USA

----

Brilliant plan but only evil

----

Those who count everything as money

soon forget whats good & whats evil

soon, all they start doing,is to play with blood

The Saudis mutilate and kill women for driving a car or having sex outside of marriage.

Anyone who is allies with the Saudis are filthy animals.

So,

Fuck you Americans,

And,

Fuck you America.

America is a lie and an abomination.

Send all Americans to Israel and bring back the Indians.
