The Swiss National Bank Bought Another 500,000 AAPL Shares Just Before 10% Correction

Tyler Durden's picture

Three months ago we were stunned to learn, and report, that the Swiss National Bank - a central bank - had been one of the biggest buyers of AAPL stock in the first quarter, when it added 3.3 million shares to its existing position, or 60%, bringing the total to 9 million shares, for a grand total of $1.1 billion. Moments ago, the SNB which unlike the Fed and the other "serious" central banks releases a 10-Q divulging its equity holdings, updated on its latest stock portfolio.

We were amused to learn that in the quarter in which AAPL stock almost hit a new all time high, the Swiss money printing authority which reported a record $20 billion loss in the second quarter, and a record $52 billion in the first half, added another 500,000 AAPL shares, bringing its new grand total to a whopping 9.4 million shares, equivalent to $1.2 billion as of June 30 (well below that now following the recent 10% correction).

At $1.2 billion, AAPL remains the top holding of the SNB, almost double the second largest position, which as of June 30 was Exxon stock valued at $637 million (and is worth much less now, and has most likely been surpassed in notional terms by #3 MSFT).

So what are the the Swiss hedge fund with nearly $94 billion in equity holdings? Here is the full breakdown.

Now if only the Fed would be this transparent about its own equity holdings...

Doesn't matter, all that money is printed for free. They'll stick the loss on the taxpayers.

Yes, but now they are visibly "all-in" with their manipulations.  End game.  That is NOT to say it cannot continue for awhile yet.

Quite the opposite actually.  Transparency is just another notch on the complacency belt.  It accustoms the plebs to the 'new normal'...where actions (crimes) are blatant and cognitive dissonance sets in.   No 'end game' in sight...

Oh the irony of it all.  A galactic sized hedge fund (aka SNB) buys another galactic sized hedge fund (AAPL's cash position) masquerading as a technology company.
(Full disclosure, I am a happy AAPL user, having dumped MS years ago)

Who votes the proxies?

Maybe I should restate that.
When money is printed out of thin air, and used to take substantial positions in publicly held companies, companies which are now able to donate unlimited sums to politicians and have significant influence in the products that we are able to buy, and the laws that we are forced to abide by, WHO VOTES THE FUCKING PROXIES?

They have to keep the Swiss franc down. This is the way to do it. Already loaded to the hilt in european bonds. Those drop more than 10%. More like 100%

Sucks for them., that's a $5m loss in a day.  At least they went long the franc before it appreciated 30% vs the dollar and euro.  WIn some lose some, hedge with manipulation, baffle them with bullshit.

This shitshow can't last much longer, right?

Have a sneaking suspicion they were the ones screwing up the RUT chart in Feb, a lot of odd, heavy-handed buying, not as sophisticated as the typical VWAP, TWAP or intraday trading algos, like a new guy joining a card game who doesn't know the 'rules.'

Well, it is about forcing the value of the Swiss Franc down. The logic is simple. The more rubbish the SNB is buying the lower will be the Swiss Franc. Now that we know what the purpose is, we can optimise the strategy. Well not everything is wrong here. SNB already picked some reasonable rubbish. Amazon and Facebook are good choice. Google and Apple are reasonably overvalued - they could stay in as well. But, o boy, what are the value stocks doing here? Pfizer and Merck - I do not believe it. Take them out! Buy Twitter and Tesla. That is much better rubbish for your Swiss Franc. And the currency will finally do would it should and tank.

Your point is valid. I was speaking from an legal standpoint.

Has the Swiss government merely created an illusion, and protected their high net worth clients, and cleared their "favor sheets"?

I haven't seen any change in banking rules, with respect to Switzerland. (enforcement)

When It's less expensive to pay the fine and/or litigate, who wins?
