Russia's Latest Land Grab Attempt In The Arctic

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Andy Tully via OilPrice.com,

Russia is resubmitting its claim of more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic, including the North Pole, as its sovereign territory, saying it has enough evidence to convince the United Nations that its claim is valid.

The Arctic, which is believed to contain as much as one-quarter of Earth’s undiscovered oil and gas, is part of a territorial dispute involving not only Russia but also Canada, Denmark, Norway and the United States.

This is the second time Moscow has submitted a claim in the Arctic. The U.N. rejected its effort in 2002, saying the Russian government hadn’t provided enough evidence that it had a right to the territory.

But in its claim filed on Aug. 3, the Russian Foreign ministry said, “To justify Russia’s rights in this area, ample scientific data collected during many years of Arctic research has been used.”

The statement evidently was referring to exploratory missions and development of Arctic research facilities and floating ice stations dating back to the 1930s. In fact, around that time Soviet leader Josef Stalin’s Kremlin claimed a large section of the Arctic Ocean.

No one took that claim very seriously, given its forbidding climate. But as the polar ice cap melts, the region is becoming increasingly attractive to countries and companies in search of new sources of energy and other natural resources, including gems and precious metals.

Additional evidence in the resubmitted claim includes data gathered by the explorer Artur Chilingarov, who sailed a miniature submarine to the floor of the Arctic Sea at the North Pole, scooped up a soil sample there and even planted a Russian flag made of titanium, the corrosion-resistant metal.

Under the 1982 U.N. Convention on the Law of the Sea, a nation may claim an “exclusive economic zone” reaching 200 nautical miles from its recognized maritime borders. If the continental shelf in that area extends beyond that point, the country then may claim sovereignty stretching as much as 350 nautical miles from its coastal border.

In the Foreign Ministry statement, Russia argues that the 350-mile limit doesn’t apply to its claim because the seabed and the natural resources to be found beneath it are “natural components of the continent,” no matter how far they are from the coast.

The Foreign Ministry said it hopes the U.N. can begin considering its claim this autumn during a meeting of the U.N. Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf. That won’t be possible this year, according to Farhqan Haq, a U.N. spokesman, because the panel won’t meet until early 2016.

Until then, he said, Moscow’s revised claim would be distributed among all the U.N.’s 193 members.
Greenpeace was quick to respond to Russia’s Arctic claim. Vladimir Chuprov, an Arctic campaigner for the group, issued a statement saying, “The melting of the Arctic ice is uncovering a new and vulnerable sea, but countries like Russia and Norway want to turn it into the next Saudi Arabia. Unless we act together, this region could be dotted with oil wells and fishing fleets within our lifetimes.”

Instead of pursuing claims to exploit the territory, Chuprov said, the countries seeking rights in the Arctic should cooperate on establishing a protected sanctuary around the North Pole.

... ... land grab? my foot! ... excuse me, Andy Tully ...  the Russians only filed a 'claim' ... why didn't you add the favourite western presstitute media by-line ... "Russia invaded the Arctic" ...

... and hey, Tully ... I thought you'd mention the famous historical land grab of the Kingdom of Hawaii from King Kamehameha as well as these unincorporated US 'snatched' properties from somewhere ... Palmyra Atoll, Guam, Northern Mariana Islands, Saipan, Puerto Rico which is now Puerto Pobre, Virgin Islands, Samoa, Baker Island, Howland Island, Jarvis Island, Johnston Atoll, Kingman Reef, Wake Island, Midway Islands, Navassa Island, Serranilla Bank, Bajo Nuevo Bank & the naval station Diego Garcia.

It might be a continuation of previous land transfers. Years ago several small Alaskan islands were transferred to Russia. Of course a borderless NWO nomad with no national loyalties like Kissinger would be in the mix.

http://www.statedepartmentwatch.org/KissingerGiveaway.htm

At this point Russia and every other country on Earth knows that America is being dragged down by a parasitic band of lawless psychopaths who are cannibalizing the whole system like locusts. All other countries know the disasters DC creates in the guise of security. They know that our leadership has no loyalty but to each other and their bank accounts, regardless of how they loot and scavenge the American populace. Foreigners have taken note and are making plans to take care of themselves.

Other than the fact that he's convenient, why dump on Obama specifically. Every president since Ronald Reagan left office has pissed away America's advantage. (I'm not sure I'd call it "leadership.") Can you point to any specific leadershp that Poppy Bush, Clinton or Baby Bush exerted--except to lead us down to the state of collapse we're in today?

Pointing to Obama misses the point, the point being that the whole leadership structure in America is corrupt. Obama is merely a symptom. It will clear our thought process to indict the entire structure--political, economic, moral--rather than point a finger at this shill or that shill or some other shill.

"Pay no attention to that man behind the curtain."

A Russian billionaire ogliarch politician is not a mass murderer? Since when? They are all mass murderers at that level.

Look at Putins American(hater) counterparts, like Hillary Clinton, destroyer of Libya and Syria. The criminal murdering bitch is responsible for all the deaths as a result well over 300000+ now since she got duped by Al Qadea in their 3:00am phone call begging to be rescued from Gaddafi.

And Obirdbrain? How many thousands of innocent law abiding American citizens has he murdered with his illegal alien army of criminals? Not to mention his off the charts bombing of Muslims in the ME....

Americans should support the Russian land grab.

Americans will have a much better shot at making money and development with Russian control.

Look at the sanctions today killing US drilling & oil companies and coal and electricity, at home and abroad shutting down American businesses bankrupting cities and states, while America jumps head first into crony Socialist green energy and goes bankrupt from trade deficits because everywhere else is a cheaper manufacturer. (after watching the EU greenenergy financial economic headplant)

Russia delivered fuel to AK villages last year because the US was too clusterfucked with Socialist bureaucracy, not out of charity, they made money.

Russia lets American companies buy into their production.

Russia is Capitalist, a real problem for late* Communists like Obama, Bush and Clinton.

Americans have to protect Capitalist Russia....out of self defense, Capitalist Ru$$ia is our Asian/Muslim defense, a natural asset and ethnic & religious ally.

It is all about northern passage between Europe and Asia after ice is finally melted in polar circle. It is all about controlling of ship navigation.

Russia has support of China for their claims since it would undercut any US influence and their so far hegemony over oceans threatening safety of China shipping. South China sea conflict is seen by China as a proof of American aggressive posture.

This is punch two, after punch one of Silicon Road to cut off US influence on Chinese trade. For Russia oil is secondary issue raised to justify more claims over arctic.

SO WHILE many Americans refuse to believe that Global Warming is a real phnomenon -  Putin is moving rapidy to gain control of the entire Arctic Ocean!!!

I guess the Russians are not having the same "hiccups" about scientific predictions for sea-level rises and the melting of icecaps.

I took a look at the data for ice cover for the North Pole.  Anybody here done that lately?  The actual data shows a trend that is on the "bad side" compared to the models of the scientists.  THIS MEANS that the actual data show the ice is melting faster than the models used by scientists.  If I just eyeball the data, the same way that you eyeball the Dow Jones and see a trend, I can see a PRETTY GOOD ARGUMENT that all the North Pole ice will be gone in another 10-15 years (summer time ice coverage).  This means that the Arctic Ocean will be a completely open expanse of seawater in the summer.  Yes, there will still be chunks of ice foating there.  But NO ICECAP.

Apparently Vlad Putin has figured all of this out.

Apparently Donald Trump never has looked at the data, and never will.  You can't see the North Pole from a balcony in New York, so to h*ll with it.  Right?!

edit: google earth shows 4090 meters there /11000 ft/ and from 250m down to 1200m on the shelf.

Still there is no technology today available (Brazilians and Vietnamese are the masters in deep sea drilling).

The last post by Sagitarius hits the NAIL ON THE HEAD.

There is an enormous challenge, if the Russians (or anybody else) want to start drilling oil in the Arctic Ocean.  Look at what the British went through with the North Sea oil projects.  Besides the freezing weather, there were also rogue waves in the North Sea that were absolutely huge.

The Arctic Ocean will pose all of these problems, with WORSE weather (storms), worse conditions for manned crews, deep drilling challenges, and floating sea ice.  This is an engineering nightmare.  How exactly does an oil rig remain stable, if it gets hit by a 100-ton piece of floating ice in heavy seas????  That's a very likely scenario, if they start drilling the Arctic.  The BOTTOM LINE is that we are going to see 20 scenarios like the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico, with a ton of pollution in the Arctic.  It is bound to happen.  The last "unspoiled refuge" will not remain "unspoiled" for very long!!

JUST THE SAME ... the Russians appear to be charging ahead.  There are a LOT of energy reserves, and Putin wants them.  If he gets them, he comes out the winner.

We're all just fucking doomed, bro.

No two ways about it, only a matter of time.

Start tellin yer kids and grandkids (etc, etc) to not have any (more) kids. That's what I'm doing. The meek (or intelligent) don't need to be inhereting this shithole. We've passed the event horizon for any kind of better future. The human experiment here has failed miserably....

....barring some friendly alien invasion to straighten things out.

What is the problem... Russia is just following some advice from the good book... "Ask and ye shall receive!"

What you omitted in your article is more revealing about whose paycheck you cash, than any truth about the Arctic claimants.

"Russia is resubmitting its claim of more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic, including the North Pole, as its sovereign territory,

I'm glad you're not trying to confuse the readers with the facts:

Denmark challenges Russia and Canada over North Pole

December 15, 2014

So last December Denmark became the THIRD nation to claim the North Pole but as you seem think news of Russia's claim is the most egregious and must be used to point out her iniquity.   And  a plug for Greenpeace.

Whom you gave the last two paragraphs of your "hit piece', Yes, it is greedy Russia and not greedy Canada nor greedy Denmark who are after the fee simple of Santa's workshop.

Russia is resubmitting its claim of more than 460,000 square miles of the Arctic,

According to more reliable sources than you, the Arctic Ocean's covers an area of 5 million square miles and according to you Russia is claiming less than 10% (460,000 sq. miles) when they have by far the longest latitudinal shore line.

Longitudinal shorelines are clearly not as important as their claims can run perpendicular into other other nations.

Andy Tully, think I know your name.  Didn't you post a selfie of you waving your willy at the  Prirazlomnaya drilling platform  from the bow of the Arctic Cockrise in September 2013?

All you dupes doing th work of Rutte and Obama

Maybe you were one of the Greenpeaceniks:

"who managed to attach themselves to the platform and attempted to climb, despite being blasted with water, while another activist tried unsuccessfully to become attached to the platform.

Or were you the pathetic prisoner in the Murmansk whoscow that said if he didn't have a doobie soon he would die.

Fess up Andy

And Denmark is bringing exactly what army to scene to support their claim? They want to invoke NATO article 5 on that perhaps? Good luck Denmark.

And where on Greenland would NATO billet their troops?  In the frigid North or the tropical South?

I can't remember.  Wasn't Denmark going to build another Tivoli Gardens in Greenland in case NATO had to defend the Danish Arctic?  Some place for troops to go when they got passes?

Iceland is the strategic point in the North Atlantic. Control that and you control the whole ocean. Thomas Clancy described how the island would be conquered in his book Red Storm Rising.

Russia has been constructing a fleet of nuclear icebreakers to break up the "non-existent" ice along it's northern shore. They are the only nation on earth with such a fleet of huge powerful ice breakers.
