US Government Enthusiastically Tweets About Arms Sales To Brutal & Autocratic Egyptian Regime

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by Mike Krieger via Liberty Blitzkrieg blog,

In case you’ve been living under a geopolitical rock for the last couple of years, you’d know that despite a brief period of time during which Egypt appeared headed toward a democratic form of government, it went from one brutal dictator to another. As was the case during Hosni Mubarak’s decades of rule, this is precisely how the U.S. government likes it. So much so, that U.S. officials are not only selling arms to the latest despot, General Abdelfattah al-Sisi, but they are actively bragging about it on Twitter.

Glenn Greenwald reports at the Intercept:

The Egyptian regime run by the despotic General Abdelfattah al-Sisi is one of the world’s most brutal and repressive. Last year, Human Rights Watch documented that that Egyptian “security forces have carried out mass arrests and torture that harken back to the darkest days of former President Hosni Mubarak’s rule.” Just two months ago, the group warned that the abuses have “escalated,” and that Sisi, “governing by decree in the absence of an elected parliament, ha[s] provided near total impunity for security force abuses and issued a raft of laws that severely curtailed civil and political rights, effectively erasing the human rights gains of the 2011 uprising that ousted the longtime ruler Hosni Mubarak.”

Despite that repression — or, more accurately, because of it — the Obama administration has lavished the regime with aid, money and weapons, just as the U.S. government did for decades in order to prop up Hosni Mubarak. When Sisi took power in a coup, not only did the U.S. government support him but it praised him for restoring “democracy.” Since then, the U.S. has repeatedly sent arms and money to the regime as its abuses became more severe. As the New York Times delicately put it yesterday, “American officials . . . signaled that they would not let their concerns with human rights stand in the way of increased security cooperation with Egypt.”

[The U.S. media pretended to be on the side of Tahir Square democracy protesters despite decades of support from the American government for Mubarak. Recall that in 2009 Hillary Clinton pronounced: “I really consider President and Mrs. Mubarak to be friends of my family.” A WikiLeaks cable, anticipating the first meeting between Obama and Mubarak in 2009, emphasized that “the Administration wants to restore the sense of warmth that has traditionally characterized the U.S.-Egyptian partnership” and that “the Egyptians want the visit to demonstrate that Egypt remains America’s ‘indispensible [sic] Arab ally.’” The cable noted that “[intelligence] Chief Omar Soliman and Interior Minister al-Adly keep the domestic beasts at bay, and Mubarak is not one to lose sleep over their tactics.”]

Glenn later notes the following tweet, posted by the official Twitter account of the U.S. Embassy in Cairo:

I went ahead and scanned the account, and found a similar tweet from the day before:

And just yesterday, we saw the following:

Yes, nothing says freedom like giddiness regarding arm sales to despots.

Of course, it’s not just Egypt…

"Democracy" doesn't mean what westerners think it means, when the context is an arab islamic country.

Do they have a permit for those weapons and are they allowed to use them in no gun zones? Somebody call Mike Bloomturd.

Again I am reminded of the 'Arab Spring'.

It's Springtime in Egypt.

Confidence in government is rising once again, and 'Merkun democracy' is now available to the 'average Joe' (or Abduhl).

Ripping apart Lybia and shipping weapons to ISIS via Turkey, and those pesky 'Bengazi' things don't matter, because it all trickles down (or is openly provided to the current Egyptian regieme). It's a 'win-win', so 'WHAT DIFFERENCE DOES IT MAKE'?

(Wait, didn't HITLERY RODHARM say that?)

Arms suppliers and the M.I.C. in CONUS get profits, and brutal dictators get a rise by thinking that they are 'all-powerful', and eugenicists get to see their goal of murdering the global population come one step closer, and bankers get to make usury interest by loaning money to BOTH the suppliers and the purchasers, and THE CONTROL AND SALE OF OIL is once again being thought of as NEEDING to be backed by a GLOBAL MILITARY FORCE...

Springtime, for Hitler, and Germany (or Egypt)!

so long as they keep buying weapons they'll be a "beacon of stability". Stop and they'll suddenly become a "brutal dictatorship".

Depends on what the definition of the word "buy" is.... In most cases it's take the weapons for free, or pay pennies on the dollar, and let the taxpayers foot the entire bill.

In this case all of the weapons were purchased by the American people.

Dating back to the Camp David Accords, we pay off Egypt and Israel every year to not start a war that would affect shipping through the Suez canal.

The illusion of allies.

We have none other than those who still think there is a chance they can get something from us, even a little as a convenient droning of their enemies.

We will continue to arm the world thinking they will conveniently kill each other off, but there is a far greater chance they will turn them on us.

Maybe its time for another treaty....or is that just an agreement that has the force of law that supersedes our constitution?

Brutal dictators are about the only way any Middle East country can be ruled. Even when democratically elected, the leaders still try to suppress any minorities. The fastest way to clear ISIS out of Iraq would be to re-incarnate Saddam Hussien - or use his same tactics. Even the U.S. is moving toward Saddam-like control in America. Spying on people, informants, Martial Law, brutal shoot-first cops, over-equipped local police, special secret police, no knock raids (that sometimes even hit the right house), comets media control, judges that overrule laws and the will of the people, etc, etc

Obama: "Netanyahu refuses to meet with me, wants to continue fighting over Iran Tags:

In a briefing before 22 Jewish leaders US President Barack Obama said that he is ready to meet with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and discuss the necessary measures needed to make Israel feel safer after the Iran deal.

According to Obama, sadly Netanyahu refused to hold a meeting. Saying the meeting would be seen as waving a white flag, because Netanyahu wants to continue fighting over the deal.

Netanyahu has bet his political image and Israeli control over the US Government on stopping the Iran deal. To quit is to lose his control over both Israel and the US. American politicians, seeing the failure of this latest Israel "full court press" will be emboldened to ignore future Israeli demands.

More murder, mayhem, and profits for Zion.

They'll provide the arms, and the fiat-debt needed to finance them ("No money down. Only Gallons of blood later."), then arms and loans to the initial customer's rivals. The warring parties will think they are fighting each other, when all of them are really fighting for Zion.

Liberty is a demand. Tyranny is submission..

It strikes me as funny how "return-ables" in the American country are pro gun-control here, but not so much on the international level where profits are plentiful and massive. Pro gun-control where those arms may be used against their tyranny, and not where guns use may bring profits to them.

Progressive are not anti-war, they simply want others to fight them for them. They believe they can arm all of these factions and incentivize them to kill one another while profiting and strip mining their wealth, yet we always find ourselves pulled into the fray. The world powers have been so effective at arming up all of these proxy wars, it would seem foolish to think they eventually will not be used against those who supplied them. Its a deadly game and there are few high morals combined between them. If there is anything funny about it, it is that the results always come as such a surprise.

Instead of fiddling while the world burns, maybe we can instead have standup comedians doing their routines while the whole thing comes down.

It is an interesting Subject, but I'm not sure in General that you can say progressives are for proxy wars.

The Players are Many, but in general I would not think New Yorkers or Holly Wood Type Progressives want to fan the flame of violence.

- Louis Farrakhan, Black Panthers, New Black Panthers, Weather Underground & Ayers,
- Tards, those mentally deficient,
- Deep Pocket Wealthy US Lefties

- Progressive Politicians are simply Corrupt like all national level politicians after 3 years tops, yes they support proxy wars and even huge Regional Wars like the Iraqi War II... while giving away rights and trying to take all guns of any kind

But maybe you just meant the Politicians.

I see the progressives as having an agenda whereas the main stream republicans simply want status quo and to hold their seats for another term. They stamp their feet and demand much, but in the end do little. If you recall, what is commonly referred to as Bush's war, was not initiated until Bush had got the votes in congress to go forward. He honestly though that by getting democrats to vote for war that they would actually support him in war....silly man! The left...Bill and Hillary, had been calling for regime change for years prior to Bush, but did nothing. They waited for someone stupid enough to put his name on it before they would actually support such a thing...be for it before they were against it. Republicans have never gone to war without liberal support, which we can see great evidence is not true the other way around. The left never goes to war and never asks permission, they simply engage in international military exercises, always leading from behind. Even though democrats were all over the Vietnam war, it still seems to this day it was Nixon's war. We saw none of the anti-war activities really build until he was elected. Until then, we were simply leading from behind providing a few advisers and such (and lots and lots of bombs).

It has always amazed me how we got stuck with the term Neocon, when it had always been the democrats that started these wars. That's the beauty of conservatism. When shit goes wrong it's always conservatives fault as all they do is hold the progressives back. Progressivism unleashed is victory for all!

Mike - I'm surprised at you.  Way past time to get real (politik).

You would rather have the M/B running their sharia courts and machine gunning Coptic Christian churches etc. as when they were in power. Or ISIS taking over (attacks are under way) and executing girls for resisting sex, on top of the 19 in the news today.

These are the other choices.

Wish we could get all Sisi to take over from our feckless guy.

Sisi is not a fundamentalist. Thank God for small mercies.

And as a unilateralist despot he is NOT Erdogan. He is more spiritual son of Nasser and in that sense closer to Kemal Ataturk than is Erdogan.

In order to understand the world you cannot look it at it through the western lens; you have to look at it in the context of regional evolution.

In that respect Sisi is a better of two or three bad Middle East options.

Hey Obama What happened to NATO, EU & USA Economic Sanctions on Russia??

http://thehill.com/policy/finance/250322-nasa-signing-490m-contract-with...

- NASA signs $490 million exclusive contract with Russia for space travel...

- (There are some people in the French Defense Industry that want to talk to you)

"NASA informed lawmakers on Wednesday that because Congress has failed to fully fund its Commercial Crew Program for the last five years, it is signing a $490 million contract extension with Russia to send Americans to space.

The new contract, running through 2019, means that NASA will continue to depend on Russia to get its astronauts to space even as tensions between Washington and Moscow escalate.

It will put money in Russia’s pockets even as U.S. economic sanctions seek to put pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin’s government over the conflict in Ukraine."

Always look for the story behind the story. Who is Al-Sisi? Dig deep boys and girls, dig deep and all will be revealed. Al-Sisis was the general in charge who demanded Egypt close the Gaza tunnels, against the feelings of the military. Al-Sisi is seen as Israel’s best friend in Egypt. Why? Why are the weapons to Egypt facing zero opposition from any Israeli lobby? Hint? Demo(cough-cough)graphics.

I'm Ok with arms to the current Egyptian government because they're not radical islamists like the Morsi government Obama was supporting.

It was the people of Egypt who stood up in Tahrir Square, 19 million of them, to get rid of Morsi because he was a radical Muslim Brotherhood member who  brutalized Christians and non-radicals as soon as he took office.

All the Egyptian military did was kindly escort Morsi (who was being advised by the Obama adminstration) out the door when he still refused to leave after almost a week of squatting and hiding out in the Presidential building. The military could have gone it with guns blazing but they didn't.
