In Blow To Obama's Iran Deal Hopes, Key Democrat Defects

Tyler Durden's picture

GOP Presidential hopefuls expressed plenty of distaste for the Iran nuclear deal during last night’s debate, but it was the voice of a Democrat that mattered most on Thursday evening as Chuck Schumer, the influential Jewish Senator from New York, came out in opposition to the accord.

As Congress heads into the summer recess, President Obama made one last push to secure support for the deal, delivering a fiery speech on Wednesday and warning of dire consequences if the agreement isn’t secured.

As CNN reports, "Republicans have scheduled a mid-September vote on a resolution to reject the Iran deal, which is expected to pass," but will need to 44 and 13 Democrats in the House and Senate respectively to break party ranks in order to override Obama’s veto.

While some say Schumer’s decision is a win for the Republicans, others claim it actually proves that Obama has effectively already succeeded in efforts to build a "firewall" against defectors. Here’s The New York Times:

Senator Chuck Schumer, the most influential Jewish voice in Congress, said Thursday night that he would oppose President Obama’s deal to limit Iran’s nuclear program.

"Advocates on both sides have strong cases for their point of view that cannot simply be dismissed," Mr. Schumer, Democrat of New York, said in a lengthy statement. "This has made evaluating the agreement a difficult and deliberate endeavor, and after deep study, careful thought and considerable soul-searching, I have decided I must oppose the agreement and will vote yes on a motion of disapproval."

“There are some who believe that I can force my colleagues to vote my way," Mr. Schumer said."While I will certainly share my view and try to persuade them that the vote to disapprove is the right one, in my experience with matters of conscience and great consequence like this, each member ultimately comes to their own conclusion."

As if on cue, Representative Eliot L. Engel of New York, the ranking Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, who was widely expected to oppose the deal, announced his opposition Thursday night.

Mr. Schumer said his chief concern was that Iran would still be free after a decade to build a nuclear bomb. His announcement comes as Representative Nancy Pelosi of California, the minority leader, labors to build a firewall in the House in support of the deal, which has been denounced by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel. At six meetings in recent weeks, Ms. Pelosi has assembled an informal team of Democrats determined to win over the 146 House Democrats needed to uphold a veto.

But Ms. Pelosi’s team had had its eye on Mr. Schumer, conceded Representative Jan Schakowsky, Democrat of Illinois and one of Ms. Pelosi’s deputies on the Iran deal. Ms. Schakowsky said that Democratic leaders had never put Mr. Schumer "in the 'yes' column," but that “the calculation still is we’ll have the votes" even without him.

Indeed The White House - which of course could simply be feigning confidence so as not to rattle Democrats who intend to toe the party line - believes Schumer only felt comfortable going public with his intention to oppose the deal because he knows Obama has the support he needs to uphold a veto. "But the decision to make his position public on the heels of a string of endorsements was being seen in the White House as a signal that it has a veto-proof number of supporters and it was safe for Schumer to oppose the deal without jeopardizing the President's agenda," CNN claims.

Unsurprisingly, John Kerry isn't happy with Schumer or with Engel for that matter. Here's AP:

U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Friday he "profoundly disagrees" with the reasoning behind decisions by two prominent Democratic lawmakers to vote against the nuclear deal he negotiated with Iran.

Speaking in the Vietnamese capital, Kerry said the facts do not bear out the arguments made by the Senate's No. 3 Democrat Chuck Schumer, and the ranking member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, Eliot Engel. He said he respects the right of lawmakers to make their own decisions about the merits of the deal, but said rejection does not offer any alternative than a drumbeat to conflict.

Schumer and Engel, both from New York, made their announcements on Thursday. Schumer is the first Democratic senator to say he will vote no on the deal, which would curb Iran's nuclear program in exchange for billions of dollars in relief from crippling sanctions.

It's "physically impossible to build a bomb" with uranium tracking, Kerry said, a protestation that won't likely impress Schumer, who bemoaned the fact that the deal won't allow for inspections "anywhere, anytime", and worse, that America can't demand inspections "unilaterally" (which is of course Washington's preferred way of getting things done foreign policy wise).

Whatever the case, a showdown looms in September when we'll see whether the President can manage to hang on to a deal which many see as key to his legacy. If he fails and his veto is overridden, "it would be an enormous blow to the [the president's] prestige," and would put Britain, France, and Germany in a kind of no-man's land, while Russia and China would likey view the debacle as still another example of why America is no longer in any position to lead a unipolar world.

Saddam Hussein is an evil man, a dictator who oppresses his people and flouts the mandate of the international community.

While this behavior is reprehensible, it is Hussein's vigorous pursuit of biological, chemical and nuclear weapons, and his present and potential future support for terrorist acts and organizations, that make him a terrible danger to the people to the United States.

"Mr Schumer said his main concern was that Iran would still be free after a decade to build a nuclear bomb."

Ok, so to prevent this Iran must be bombed back to the stone age, because Israel, not having any nukes (wink, wink)

has no deterrent to Iran's "unprovoked" aggression.  No deal would suit them, aside from complete subjugation of the Persians.

Obama speech on Iran: Collapse of nuclear deal will mean war

By Barry Grey
6 August 2015

Defending the nuclear accord reached last month with Tehran, President Barack Obama said Wednesday that congressional blockage of the deal would rapidly lead to war against Iran.

In a chilling passage of the speech delivered at American University in Washington, DC, Obama declared: “Congressional rejection of this deal leaves any US administration that is absolutely committed to preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon with one option, another war in the Middle East. I say this not to be provocative, I am stating a fact…

“Does anyone really doubt that the same voices now raised against this deal will be demanding that whoever is president bomb those nuclear facilities?... So let's not mince words. The choice we face is ultimately between diplomacy or some form of war. Maybe not tomorrow, maybe not three months from now, but soon.”

These words were the centerpiece of an address aimed at recruiting a sufficient number of Democratic congressmen and senators to sustain a presidential veto against a virtually certain vote in both the House of Representatives and the Senate to scuttle the agreement when Congress returns from its summer recess on September 8.

Nuclear Agreement With Iran — Paul Craig Roberts

Washington’s issue with Iran has never been Iran’s nuclear energy program. The notion pushed by the neoconservatives that Iran only had a nuclear energy program (5% uranium enrichment) in order to hide a nuclear weapons program (95+% enrichment) was always a cover for Washington’s real opposition to Iran and Washington’s real agenda.

From the standpoint of Washington’s doctrine of US world hegemony, the problem with Iran is its independence. Like Iraq, Libya, Syria, Venezuela, Ecuador, Bolivia, Brazil, Argentina, Cuba, North Korea, Russia and China, Iran is not Washington’s vassal.

Washington was unwilling to admit the truth and to say that Iran was on its target list, because Iran would not submit to Washington’s will. Instead, Washington decided to create fear of Iran among the American and European peoples. Washington did this by accusing Iran of developing nuclear weapons that Iran would give to terrorists or use itself against Israel, Europe, and America. When Washington placed anti-ballistic missiles on Russia’s border, Washington lied to Russia that the purpose was to intercept (non-existent) Iranian nuclear ICBMs.

Washington’s propaganda about the threat of Iranian nukes is now many years old despite the National Intelligence Report released by all 16 US intelligent agencies that Iran abandoned more than a decade ago its interest in nuclear weapons. Washington’s propaganda has also continued with the aid of the Western media despite the fact that the International Atomic Energy Agency inspectors on the ground in Iran consistently report that there is no evidence of any diversion of enriched uranium to a weapons program. In other words, the IAEA inspectors can account for all of the enriched uranium by the perfectly legal energy program.

Nevertheless, Washington contends, Iran is making or is about to make nuclear weapons.

The nuclear weapons fabrication has always been a cloak for Washington’s real intention, which is to bring regime change to Iran, whether from outside or inside, and return Iran to its previous status of a vassal state of the West. The Western imperialists never forgive those who escape or throw off their clutches.

Washington orchestrated the “nuclear threat” issue in order to prepare Americans and Europeans for a military attack on Iran.

By cloaking its real intentions in a fabricated issue, Washington opened the door to Russia resolving the fabricated issue with diplomacy. Trapped in its own fabrication, Washington is confronted with Russia resolving the issue with enforceable agreements that guarantee no Iranian enrichment to weapons category.

The rest of the story: Obama speech on Iran: Collapse of nuclear deal will mean war

Obama’s speech was an exercise in hypocrisy and deceit. The agreement reached last month between Iran and the so-called P5 + 1 (US, Britain, France, Russia, China and Germany) provides for the suspension of the most onerous sanctions against Tehran in exchange for sweeping concessions by Iran, including acceptance of an inspection regime over the country’s civilian nuclear program of historically unprecedented intrusiveness. It also includes a so-called “snap back” provision that allows Washington to claim that Iran is in breech of the agreement and quickly reimpose sanctions, including an oil embargo, that have devastated the country’s economy.

Obama framed his response to opponents of the deal, including virtually all Republican members of Congress, a section of Democrats, the Israeli government and influential pro-Israel organizations in the US, and media organizations headed by the Wall Street Journal, as a commitment to diplomacy and the peaceful resolution of international disputes, in opposition to war hawks who demand unilateral US military action. He began by invoking the 1963 speech by President John F. Kennedy delivered at the same university, in which Kennedy called for a nuclear test ban treaty and a policy of peaceful diplomacy with the Soviet Union.

Kennedy’s policy, announced just months after the Cuban missile crisis, proved to be successful, Obama said, because it created “the time and space to win the Cold War without firing a shot at the Soviets.”

The clear implication was that Obama’s nuclear deal with Iran would provide the best conditions for eliminating Iran as an obstacle to US imperialist policy in the Middle East and internationally without entailing the risks and costs of a major war. To bolster his argument, Obama linked the present-day opponents of the Iran nuclear agreement with those who advocated the 2003 invasion of Iraq, which Obama characterized as a strategic disaster.

The president touted his supposed anti-war credentials, citing his opposition to the Iraq invasion, which he used to appeal to anti-war and anti-Bush sentiment in his 2008 election campaign. He did not bother to square this pretense with his record in office—continuing the Iraq bloodbath for another two years after coming to power, massively expanding the war in Afghanistan, organizing the war for regime-change that left Libya in a permanent state of chaos, and orchestrating a catastrophic civil war for regime-change in Syria.

Over the past year, he has launched a new war in Iraq, initiated the bombing of Syria and backed a murderous war by Saudi Arabia in Yemen. Just days before his speech at American University, he backed the carving out of a “buffer zone” in Syria by Turkish forces and sanctioned US air strikes against Syrian government forces in support of US-funded and trained mercenaries operating in the country.

Moreover, he made a point in his speech of reiterating that even with a nuclear agreement, Washington would retain the option of war against Iran. At one point he said: “[I]f 15 or 20 years from now, Iran tries to build a bomb, this deal ensures that the United States will have better tools to detect it, a stronger basis under international law to respond, and the same options available to stop a weapons program as we have today, including—if necessary—military options.”

At another point he declared: “The defense budget of the United States is more than $600 billion. To repeat, Iran’s is about $15 billion. Our military remains the ultimate backstop to any security agreement that we make. I have stated that Iran will never be allowed to obtain a nuclear weapon. I have done what is necessary to make sure our military options are real. And I have no doubt that any president who follows me will take the same position.”

He all but boasted: “I’ve ordered military action in seven countries,” adding, “There are times when force is necessary, and if Iran does not abide by this deal, it’s possible that we don’t have an alternative.”

There are sharp divisions within the American ruling class and state and with traditional US allies in the region over the Iran agreement and any attempt to line up the Iranian regime behind US imperialism’s drive for hegemony over the entire Eurasian land mass. They are bound up with the mounting crises and contradictions facing the United States as it seeks to offset its relative economic decline by means of military violence, economic and diplomatic bullying and brazen disregard for international law.

A major factor behind Washington’s turn to some sort of accommodation, at least for the present, with Iran is its desire to focus more political and military resources on its drive to isolate and militarily encircle Russia and China.

But Obama’s attempt to cast this policy shift as a commitment to peaceful diplomacy and adherence to international law is a transparent fraud. The basic premise behind his entire speech was the assumption that the United States has the right to pre-emptively attack Iran or any other country it deems an impediment to its striving for domination of the resources, markets and working masses of the entire planet.

For the president to assert categorically that scuttling the agreement with Iran will bring imminent war can only mean that detailed plans for a massive assault have already been drawn up, behind the backs of the American people, and powerful sections of the ruling elite and the military-intelligence establishment are intent on implementing them.

So Jews run everything. Corporations, banks, government, yet they deliberately enter into a treaty with Iran that ALL of them think is bad, while also owning the banks and business that stand to profit from it. So is Obama suddenly your Anti-Jew?

But anyone who thinks that once the progressives have gotten what they want and then will celebrate black nationalism are crazy. Regardless of what you think of the ME, America has lost all credibility and looks weak and pathetic. To enter into a long term negotiation with Iran and then end up with this agreement, which wins absolutely nothing for America, only puts a bow on our ineffectual policies and diplomacy. If we want out, then just fucking leave and stop playing games. No one thinks Iran will submit to any meaningful inspections. So exactly what was the point of all this? Iran says Death to America. so yep give em a nuke. is that the logic? taking out nuke sites in Iran is not all out war, but our leadership in USA always expands the military role..you know bush's No nation building pledge..lol, too many hands don't get paid if we have limited war..ergo the never ending war on terror and the stupid occupation of iraq and afgan.

still wonder in this day of massive NSA tracking of everything why targeted killing of those who would do evil (leadership in Iran) is not done, yet massive civilian killing gets the OK..could be the money thing.

Most politicians are like a child with chocolate all over their face preaching to others the importance of morality when it comers to not stealing others cookies.

The US has lost the moral high ground to preach to anyone about anything.

Within one decade, put my money down for Jerusalem or Washington DC to be the target of an Iranian nuclear device.  Both countries will not survice the aftermath.

You are right. We shouldn't judge Iran if we have never been there.

But I have met and known a number of them, all of which moved to the US to get the fuck away from your nation of peace. So please inform us of how many people are immigrating to Iran. We have millions of Muslims who have moved away from the ME, Iran and all the rest. Are they all victims of Jewish propaganda from within their home lands?

I'm not trying to paint Iran as somehow evil. I'm simply suggesting that things are not nearly so black and white as you seem to believe. I can appreciate your passion, and if you just want to spew on others, you are doing a good job. But if you want to actually persuade, you are on the wrong path. If you truly think everyone who does not agree with you are idiots and you are one of the few enlightened ones, then you should understand that idiots are EASY to manipulate, and the absolutely worse way is to call them idiots....idiot.

Europe will not resist any capitulation to Muslim interests. They are packed to the gills with Muslims, many of them radical, that they have already capitulated to within their own borders. Further, any military actions that might become necessary because of foreign policy fuckups will be born by America. But they have many corporate interests set to make plenty of money selling Iranians lots of stuff, including weapons of which many have been breaking the sanctions to do already.

Consensus can show many things, but one important one is the depth of corruption that drives them.

There are only two things that are driving the major powers in this regard.

One is money and lots of it

The other is ideology and political agenda.

Does anyone posting here believe either Iran, Europe or Obama are pursuing America's best interests? Seriously, regardless of your beliefs regarding Israel....

If nothing else, projecting weakness is NEVER in our interest. You should feel absolutely entitled to pursue your own nation's interests, but I do question why so many think that Iran's interests parallel their own.

Do I understand this correctly? The deal is already done and to prevent it happening, Congress has to give a veto override proof number of votes against it or it becomes law? Huh? How FUBAR. This used to be known as a treaty which required 60% positive vote by the Senate to be accepted. Definitely time for the state legislatures to get the Convention of States moving forward to decide whether they can salvage anything of their agent in DC or dissolve it and give governance as a nation a major rethink.

Russia and China have been dealing with Iran all along. This deal simply sweetens their situation to some degree, but one must wonder if it is enough to actually support it, given they now will be forced to compete with legitimate trade. Drug dealers are not for drug legalization. If there is any legitimacy to this deal, it is to the benefit of US companies who can now trade with Iran, trade that previously was limited to those countries willing to defy sanctions, of which plenty were. The inspections are meaningless and no one thinks this will make much difference to Iran's nuke intentions. This is as much about money for US corporations and the liquidity of 150 billion US dollars flooding into the market.

The path to hell is paved by paving contractors only trying to make a living.

Sharia law can be a bitch. I sure wouldn't want to depend on white progressives for my defense. The thing we must understand, something that we have watched in America, is that no amount of contrition, no amount of guilt and submission will save you. When push comes to shove, regardless of how loudly you declare your alliance with their cause, you will be "other"and as such, disposable. Progressive enabled Islam is on the ascension and resistance is becoming increasingly dangerous. There is reason to be fearful of a neocon agenda as it aggravates this ascension and will cause retribution...as we have already seen. Its better to just surrender now and take your chances. Lay down our defenses and beg for mercy. It just might work. To resist is just too dangerous.

Surrender while we can before the religion of peace and the progressive purge ends us..

Phoney Schumer!Israel needs to fully comply to international inspection and regulations. It never has.How can you sit back and ignore that?Is it forever? This is the finger being pointed at Israel, the light needs to be shone on hyprocrisy.Endless war is not in anybodys interests except neo-cons in Washington and Israel.Iran views this as phoney.

One would think a deescalation of the tensions between the US and Iran would be seen as a good thing by both parties.  Other than the Jews in Congress that is.  But the Zionist lobby is strong and so is the push for more Middle East hegemony and so is the influence of the neocon new world order backed by the powerful international financial interests.  We suspect Congress is nothing but a rubber stamp for these people and I guess we'll find out now.

Goes way beyond that Dutch.

If Bad Vlad is serious about Vladivostok to Lisbon you need Iran in the middle. You have Russia, China, India, probably Armenia and AFghanistan. Pakistan seems receptive. The Central Asian Stans seem a no brainer. Integrating Iran into the mix really signs up Eurasia. The goal will be to entice Germany and then the rest of Europe will go along.

Fuck Greece. Iran is Putin's plum

Millions of refugees are fleeing to Europe because of USA induced wars of terror in their country.

Then they have the audacity to say,  refugees not wanted here.
