F Stands For Facebook: Presenting The New FICO Credit Score

Tyler Durden's picture

In April, we brought you the "FAKE-O" score or, as we delicately described it, "banks' brilliant plan to lend to deadbeats."

The problem with FICO scores - or any other measure of creditworthiness where the model inputs are linked to payment history - is that they don’t end up being very high for people who aren’t good about making payments on time and that’s bad news when you’re trying to build a successful “originate to sell” model.

If you’re a subprime auto lender for instance, and you want to make as many loans as you can so that you can sell them to Wall Street where they will be put through the securitization doomsday machine, you don’t really care about the creditworthiness of the borrower, but you have to base your decisions on something because if any annoying regulators ever come sniffing around your books trying to figure out why the entire market just disintegrated into a smoldering pile of subprime ashes you can point to a number and say "see, by this metric things should have been ok."

So what do you do? Well, one thing you can do is come up with an alternative way to measure creditworthiness and preferably one which is virtually guaranteed to come back with a happy result, which is exactly what Fair Isaac decided to do. Here’s what WSJ said about the new "unnamed" score at the time:

The new score, which isn’t yet named, will be calculated based on consumers’ payment history with their cable, cellphone, electric and gas bills, as well as how often they change addresses and other factors, according to Fair Isaac, also known as FICO. Traditional FICO scores that lenders use in the approval or rejection process are calculated based on the information in the credit reports from the three major credit-reporting firms, Equifax Inc., Experian PLC and TransUnion.

The new score will instead pull data from a separate database of telecommunications and utilities providers maintained by Equifax.

Got that? The "new score" will determine how creditworthy someone is by asking the utility company if the lights are still on and asking the phone company if the phone is still connected.

Now obviously, some of the last things people will stop paying as they descend into abject poverty are the electric bill and the phone bill, so if you wanted to engineer “evidence” of creditworthiness, this is a good place to start as anyone who managed to keep electricity flowing to their home last month suddenly deserves a loan for a car.

But because that wasn’t (nearly) absurd enough, Facebook has a better idea. Mark Zuckerberg will determine your creditworthiness based on your friend network.

No, really. Here’s The Consumerist:

Earlier this year Facebook announced it would dip its toes into the pool of mobile payments by launching a system that allowed users to send money to friends via the Messenger app. Now it appears the company may take things a bit farther after receiving approval for a patent this week that would allow creditors to determine whether or not someone is worthy of a loan based on their circle of friends on the social networking site.

The patent — which was actually applied for by Facebook back in August 2012 — is for a system of authorization and authentication based on an individual’s social network. It could have several uses, including filtering out spam email and offensive content, and improving searches on the site.

However, it’s the use related to approving or denying a loan request based on the friends you keep that is a bit worrisome.

“When an individual applies for a loan, the lender examines the credit ratings of members of the individual’s social network who are connected to the individual through authorized nodes (connections),” the patent states. “If the average credit rating of these members is at least a minimum credit score, the lender continues to process the loan application. Otherwise, the loan application is rejected.”

According to the patent, the lender would be able to access a potential borrower’s social circle by submitting a request for information from Facebook’s databases. They would then receive a series of lists – grey, black and white – that would be used to determine the average credit score for the would-be borrower’s friends.

And while Bankrate.com's Greg McBride assures us that this is "nothing to lose sleep over for people with decent credit history," it's not the borrowers we're concerned about. The question is this: what happens when billions in loans that were made based on Facebook's proprietary friend check end up packaged and sold to investors? Or maybe more to the point: how utterly insane will this one day look when everyone suddenly realizes that a wave of defaults all have one thing in common... that the underlying loans were made based on borrowers' social networks?

Want a fresh start in life?

First find a country that will give you a passport or citizenship.

Then get that passport.

Then sign up for as many credit cards as you can.

Make small purchases but always pay on time or about a year.

Then request higher limits.  Keep doing this for another year.

Then in one fell swoop max out all cards and get as much CASH and things you will need in your new home in your new country.  Also don't forget to put the airline ticket (one way) on the card.

Then have farewell party with your friends (again, putting the beer and food on the CC)

Then get on the plane and start to enjoy life in your new country,

There isn't a goddam thing the banks can do to you.

I'm sorry, the plebs have been brainwashed into believing regulation of any type is a bad thing. Never mind, be prepared to be fucked, for the Lumpenproletariat and Middle America will deserve the arsefucking coming to them. Gawd bless America. Any half decent society would ban such an egregious act, but alas the U.S is no decent society and thus gets routinely abused. If this doesn’t kill Facebook, then nothing will and I for one will be glad to see its demise.

I literally have no debt...i rent my place, paid cash for my 10 year old car, no student loan debt, credit card is paid off in full every month and bills get paid automatically or on the 1st of every month.  All of this has a negative effect on my credit score.

I was told recently by a friend who runs a mortgage service outfit that the best way to increase your credit is to pay interest on purpose...i.e., keep 20% of your credit card limit on your card so they can charge you interest & do that for 3-6 consecutive months at least - ideally to do it at all times.  He also suggested taking out a low-interest loan for something I don't even need and just make minimum payments on it so there's a record of me paying interest on a debt.

So quite literally, the most credit-worthy, those who pay their debts off in an ASAP kind of way are considered bad candidates for loans.  I know this is all 2nd grade level info for most on ZH but thought I'd enlighten the select few who weren't aware.

PS:  I don't have a Facebook account and haven't for almost 10 years so that's yet another negative to my 'credit worthiness'... lol

Some guy maxed out his credit cards and used that to buy some shit that he wanted and move out of the country, and flipped the banks the bird, and he was dubbed "The Credit Terrorist" because he was very vocal about what he did and why he did it.  Basically, he felt that the game was rigged in the banks' favor, and decided that they deserved to get fucked.  IIRC, it was in the hundreds of thousands that he defaulted on, and the banks can't touch him.

Yes it could be said the guy is a deadbeat.   However,  he did nothing wrong. seeing as the bank gave him the money (unsecured debt)  No fraud involved at all.  The CC company took a chance and they lost. Simple as that.

One man's terrorist is another man's freedom fighter.

To a bank, anyone who doesn't borrow their imaginary bucks is a terrorist. One who deliberately makes the bank print a bunch of funny money (called a loan), then spends it with no intention of paying it back, is actually trying to usurp the government's power, and is thus a terrorist.

Don't fret it Heywood. To me you are a hero, a freedom fighter, and visionary!

If you do not have debt, if you use cash, if you are not on social media, you are a risk and suspect, you are hiding something from authorities. This is their state of mind and evil what credit scoring proprietary monopoly and social media are doing.

The debts is good, the dependency, slavery is good, daily confessions good, psychotic delusions about the world great.

It is appalling why we could not calculate our credit score by ourselves with open source formula.

Sat, 08/08/2015 - 08:19 | 6404310 RiverDrifter

I call bullshit on this line of thought....whoever needs it can just as easily check out my "payment history" and/or "credit worthiness" by looking at my utility bills, rent payments, how long I've been employed, how much I make averaged over the past 3 years or whether I'm willing to put up anything as collateral.  Even now under this nonsensical and seemingly arbitrary way of calculating my credit score, they could take these things into account....but no, it doesn't benefit them & to me, it's the single biggest "tell" they've put out there in terms of what their ultimate goal is in this game they've created.

If you're not willing to pay interest, they're not willing to loan you any money.  The more interest you're willing to pay, the more money they're willing to lend....it's all about the interest for these assholes.

FCRA has $1,000 in statutory damages for each individual violation (yes, they stack,) plus actual damages plus attorney's fees if you win a case.  If Facefuck is going to be pulling credit reports left and right, it could get VERY expensive for them in a hurry if they don't watch their Ps and Qs.  If we're lucky, we could get to hear some Facefuck attorneys bellyaching about how their business model doesn't work under existing law so existing law should be ignored.

Yeah, the $1k limit on punitive damages is bullshit.  Fair Credit Reporting Act, my ass.  Credit scores shouldn't even exist.  They bypass consumer statements.  FICO should tack on 50 points for every consumer statement.  The entire credit reporting system is a scam.  Pisses me off anytime I think about it.

Fri, 08/07/2015 - 19:02 | 6402787 El Vaquero
El Vaquero's picture

I agree that they shouldn't exist, but if you bring a successful suit against a somebody under the FCRA for one single violation and are only awarded $1,000 plus attorney's fees, it's still very expensive for the defendant.  They have to hire an attorney, and for that you're looking at $250/hr give or take, plus $35/hr for the paralegals, plus the other costs of litigating a case, and if you win, then they have to pay all of your fees too.  A successful FCRA case can cost the defendant tens of thousands of dollars even without going to trial.

An old, very old man whom I look upon as a member of my family asked me something today after reading the morning papers regarding matters such as this.

Who will look after the people that are associated with the protectors of those in power, or directly their families while they are owt at work?  What will the protectors of power do when they go home and find they gone or not alive?

Contemplating this problem over a nice smoke and a cup of tea I smiled, I said, Bob mate, I have no idea.  You think they will go back to work the morrow eh?  The same 86 year old bloke said...

Would you?

Would you?

Keep fucking going you cunts, keep fucking going.

Interesting question. One i have posed in a similar vein for Police and Fire Protection in most modern cities in the US.

What will the Law and order members do starting with the 5th day of breakdown in law and civil society in most parts of a major city. Will they protect the cities or their families.

Rent a Credit Score, now available on FB

Now Hear This:

"You are not able to prevent the display of your phone number when you call 800, 844, 855, 866, 877, 888, and 900 numbers. The called party, which pays for the call, may be able to identify your phone number using Automatic Number Identification (ANI) technology."

The ANI (Automatic Number Identification system) operates over a COMPLETELY different "circuit" than ordinary "Caller ID". It provides EVERYTHING about the credit rating, criminal record, etc., etc. of the phone service client if, for example you call "911".

This has existed for at least 40 years, long, long before caller ID was introduced. And most people never even knew about it. No, it cannot be blocked in any way.

THEY LIVE is a documentary. RIP Rowdy Roddy Piper.

UR so right. No more smart phones for me. I use anonymous, throw away phones and change them periodically. Phone number + email address and you are an open book. Not so much about the NSA, it's about hackers and marketers who can access everything you do and then can make the data available to anyone.

I predicted 2 years ago that soon people won't be using their real names and info on Facebook.

I use Facebook for my own agenda.  Informing as many people about whats really going on in the world.

They can ban me but as long as I can keep concocting names I always come back.

Just today I sent links to over 100 churches and Christian organisations about THIS.   It will never be reported in USA media.

Basing your credit on your circle of friends is not a terrible idea. Seriously, think about the deadbeats you know. Who are their friends? Do they hang out with deadbeats or do they party with doctors and lawyers? I remember reading one article where scientists could assign probability that you are gay based on your circle of friends, and it was remarkably accurate. Gay people tend to have gay friends. Fancy that.

"The new score will determine how creditworthy someone is by asking the utility company if the lights are still on and asking the phone company if the phone is still connected. "

FICO scores already look at power and phone bills. Defaulting on your phone bill seriously fucks up your credit score.

Got out of debt last month. Bought the new house for cash , truck in cash, no credit card debt, no student loan, no nothing.

Have a credit score of 650. Doesn't matter, because I'm never going into debt again. Soon die. Not kidding.

Funny part? I asked for a limit increase on my credit card. It was 20k. I decided to have some fun with the bank and demanded a 50k limit. Even with my piss poor credit score they approved it. What gives?

"You have to admit that ZioNazi Jews are smart." No, I only have to admit that they collude and are crooked.

In general I agree with your viewpoint on Facebook, but if you still believe the Germans tricked anybody into taking showers you need to do some homework.

While I have agreed with some of the points made in your posts in the past, I always get a little concerned about people that 1) heap praise on the chosen, 2) are quick to concatenate the term "Nazi" (a cabal-invented label) onto everything and everyone they don't like, and 3) still believe in the Holohoax.

You've now got some heavy lifting to do to convince anybody on ZH that you are not a cabalist troll.

I think that today a question about risky loans is very popular and necessary. Almost all banks reject the applications made from people with no payment history or very low credit score. In such conditions people have to benefit with Canadian payday loans online with quite higher interest rates, as lenders try to insure themselves while working with risky borrowers. And such situation makes people poorer, as they have no other option instead of paying so high charges. That is why I think that the government needs to create some special system for people who have never taken loans and protect them from losing their money.
