Since 2007: 1.4 Million Manufacturing Jobs Lost; 1.4 Million Waiter/Bartender Jobs Gained

Tyler Durden's picture

Who says America has a jobs problem? As the chart below shows, the "New Economy" may pay abysmally, but at least it promises a little to everyone (or to paraphrase a famous phrase "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need"). Nowhere is that more obvious than in the chart showing the monthly change in waiter and bartender jobs.

Here is the bottom line: in the past 65 months, or nearly five and a half years starting with March 2010, or when the jobs "recovery" really kicked in, jobs for waiters and bartenders (aka food service and drinking places) have declined just once.

This is a statistically abnormal hit rate of nearly 99%, and one which we assume has everything to do with the BLS' charge of not so much reporting reality as finding loopholes in the goalseeked model to report that the US keeps adding over 200,000 jobs every month or bust.

Putting this number in context, the US has allegedly added 376K bartenders in the past year, and 3 million since March 2010.

And here is another, even more disturbing way of showing the "New Economy" - since December 2014, the US has lost 1.4 million manufacturing workers. These have been replaced almost one to one, with new waiters and bartenders. Win, win for everyone, especially the welfare state and of course, China.

Hmmm could that be because 1 waiter working 2 part-time jobs = 2 employees to the BLS...

saints51,

Debt isn't a bug; it's a feature.  Without credit, we'd have to work a lot harder and learn to conserve.  I don't think most people want that.  So be careful what you wish for.

The work ethic was killed off long before the jobs went elsewhere.  Unions are for higher wages and job security.  They will still endorse democrats despite TPP etc.

I even think these numbers are faked. I really don't think that many new restruants and bars have been opened. Even in tourist spots like South Florida, Lee county beaches, Broward Area, etc,  dosen't seem like there are a lot of new places AT ALL.

I think everytime I give my friend a beer they are counting me as a bartender for the month to get these numbers.

My wife was a waitress earning that great $2.13 per hour minimun wage for waiters/waitresses.

You tried making it on $2.13?

Most I seen her come home on a good day with in tips was about $25 dollars. That works out to about $42,,, about $5 per hour.

She is one of the hardest workers I ever met. Took pride in her work even though most sneered and made passes at her.

And kind sir,,, she was never on any welfare of any sort.

So,,, kindly shove it!

EDIT: This was BEFORE we were married, and she had one child.  You try it...

Wow. So now apparently, it is open season on people making tips. I often wonder when I read stupid shit, how the government and the IRS were so successful in brainwashing an entire society into believing that making tips or engaging in barter or unreported cash income- was somehow shady.

The only shady practice is the one where the IRS seizes your money and gives you nothing in return- ya know- like that fantastic representation we get in DC.

so, obamacare is working.  reduce hours, so full time becomes part time and hire some folks to work those hours so companies dont have to pay benefits.  cant do this with manufacturing, so those people lose their jobs and are the part time fill ins at starbucks, mcdonalds and chipotle.

And the biggest income of Bartenders and Waiters is black money, tips. The amount of money collected is nowhere near the amount reported for tax. So the Government is once again going to have to borrow an insane amount of money to pay for the 1 in 7 people that now work for the US Government.

When Reagan was president, the IRS first started using a restaurant's gross receipts to determine if there was under reporting of tips.  Restaurants have to file a report designed to highlight any shortfall of reported tips below 8% of gross receipts from food and beverage sales.  Further, most tips at full service restaurants are paid by credit card, enabling restaurants to keep track of tips.  In the good old days, in the 1970s and earlier, when cash was king, waiters could hide most of their tip income and declare what they want.  Back then, the IRS would send undercover agents in to monitor the amount of cash tips service employees received.  Very labor intensive.  Now, wait staff have restaurant managers taking a cut of their tips illegally when they can and the IRS pressuring restaurants to report all tip income or else.

America should start manufacturing the things used by bartenders and waiters: plastic trays, highball glasses, and long metal spoons. Then, if the US consumer can just start consuming more booze---a LOT more booze---it's a win-win. Problem solved.
