Guest Post: Will Trump Save The World (By Doing A Deal With Putin)?

For the past few weeks we have heard plenty of statements from Washington about the huge threat to U.S. National Security coming from Russia. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and top Pentagon brass are convinced — or say they are — that the Russian threat is an absolute reality. The latest in this row is the statement by the Head of the US Special Operations Command General Joseph Votel, who also views Russia as an "existential threat" to the United States, repeating accusations against Moscow over the Ukrainian crisis.
In Congress, the party of war keeps pushing the same line but If this were only related to the upcoming budget sequestration discussion — which, among other things, can affect the Pentagon — one could dismiss this incessant talk of an imminent Russian threat as a simple money extortion exercise. However, I am afraid it is not just about money.
Washington hawks want regime change in Russia, no more and no less. Their hatred of Putin, who has the guts to have his own opinion of world affairs, and who stands firm for his country's right to look after its security interests, makes him the ultimate evil — someone who has to go and be replaced by a more malleable character. A person like Boris Yeltsin, who knew who is running the show on the world stage and humbly accepted this sober fact.
It's a different question how to achieve Putin's overthrow without a major military confrontation with Russia, a conflict that can well end in a conflagration engulfing the whole planet. It is one thing to perform regime change in Iraq, Libya or Ukraine but dealing with nuclear-armed Russia is quite a different matter.
Presently the hawks' thinking is still at the stage where they believe they can get rid of Putin through economic sanctions and by using the conflict in Ukraine to exhaust Russia's strength, ruin its economy and undermine its stability. There is no question that substantial damage to Russian economy has been done. It is not "in tatters," as Mr. Obama recently gloated, but is definitely shrinking and the number of people living below the poverty line has indeed increased. However, Putin's popularity is not heading south; on the contrary, his ratings jump a point or two every time another angry anti-Putin rebuke from Washington hits the airwaves.
Instead of accepting the failure of the current policy of sanctions and start searching for some kind of reasonable compromise, the party of war is pushing for escalation in tensions which can end up really badly for everyone. Any incident, however unintentional and insignificant in itself, can grow into something that we all — or rather those who will have survived — will remember with a sense of everlasting wonder at human stupidity.
What we see now resembles the hysteria in 2003 prior to and during the Iraq invasion. The party of war is so hell-bent on its perilous course that it can hardly be swayed by any reasonable arguments of those against warmongering. Nowadays even the most ardent supporters of the Iraq and Libya wars admit that they were huge mistakes which resulted in hundreds of thousands dead and wounded, millions of refugees, trillions of dollars wasted and the rise of ISIS on top of that.
Besides, there is another question that needs to be considered coolly and factually. Does Russia really represent the great or even greatest threat to America or for that matter to any NATO country?
Many Russians believe that actually it is America that represents the greatest threat to their country. Was it Russia that instigated a military coup in Mexico and installed an anti-American corrupted oligarch as its president? Was it Russia that imposed devastating economic sanctions on America — or is it the other way round? Is it Russia that supplies weapons and trains Mexican nationalists who are thinking of getting back territories lost during an armed conflict between the United States and the Centralist Republic of Mexico in the wake of the 1845 US annexation of Texas, which Mexico regarded as its inalienable part. Is it Russia that funds and supports American protest groups, something that we do around the world through the democracy promotion crusade?
As for the military threat, Putin and his generals are well aware that NATO armed forces are ten to fifteen times stronger than Russia's. You can call Putin any names but he is definitely not insane or suicidal. However, if you try to back the bear into a corner, anything can happen.
At this point it looks like the only and lonely sane voice in Washington belongs to the Secretary of State John Kerry who recently stated that he "doesn't agree with the assessment that Russia is an existential threat to the United States…. Certainly we have disagreements with Russia…but we don't view it as an existential threat."
As for the huge crowd of presidential candidates, it looks like so far the only one who promises to fix the US-Russia relations thus avoiding a looming disaster is Donald Trump. In his recent interview on CNN he said that he would be able to work well with the Russian president.
No matter how the media and Republican Party establishment are trying to humiliate Trump, I for one would give him a chance.

I only know intimately a handful of prep school & Ivy league guys. They all have a remarkably similar philosophy. They believe in the exceptionalism of their training. They believe that the world is their model, not that there is a vast world of data that they consume more efficiently by abstracting most of it into preprocessed patterns, focusing only what they regard as the significant variables. They all sell their somewhat similar ideas, and they all look for investors because their ideas are large scale ventures. When the world doesn't fit their memory tunnel they describe whats wrong with the world, and how they can reposition their assets, including themselves, to produce the desired result. Then they do it. They are tenacious. In their words, their world is a grand chessboard. They do not ever question their models.
They all believe that everybody lives in their time tunnel, that people who don't fit their construct are anomalies that just don't know as much as they do, because they all studied their asses off and rang the elite bell. Anomalies didn't have the right stuff. Some of them go out of their way to exterminate rejects. I suppose this bit of training was to enable them to dehumanize their victims, but for some the anomalies are attacked as threats. It is significantly alarming that the leadership is processing reality through models that were appropriate to the world as it was about 30-60 years ago, when the world has changed exponentially. You can just read what they wrote to see what their views are.
They all believe that everybody lives in their memory tunnel. But everybody has a unique memory tunnel. Memory tunnels are normally distributed, but grouped by time, race and nationality. While I believe in the essence and immortality of spirit, and have read many NDE accounts, I question their pertinency, especially since accounts are usually published many years after the fact, are edited, and potentially serve certain agendas. I agree and found some dubious. When my father had one and told me what he experienced, what he must do and how he did not want to return to earth, it caught my attention. He told my mother in private he had only three years left. He did die 3 years later and had no fear of it whatsoever. His account was never published. He was a very private man.
When I read Proof of Heaven my lingering doubts were dispelled. His experience captured my attention especially being a microbiologist and he was a nonreligious neurosurgeon.

I'm of the opinion that we are not meant to understand such. Therein lies the purpose of prayer and meditation, the singular elegance of that moment for in the deepest of meditative states, the understanding of the unity, that it is meant just as is, the purity of all. And unfortunately, the very moment we realize we are experiencing that tiny glimpse, it recedes, eluding us except for the memory of the ecstasy.
Perhaps we are allowed some measure of comprehension during the "bonus round" as the soul departs upon it's next journey.
Ever so interesting that those in the Quantum arena find an elegance between the intersection of the spiritual and temporal while the classicists seem to go out of their way to defame such. The classicists reign in today's social paradigm, for science is of the whim of the governors while He remains above. Their Empires built of the Temporal within His Kingdom.
Reminds me of the story of Steven Hawking dying and going to heaven. When he gets to the Pearly Gates he immediately demands to see God, asking St Peter "Don't you know who I am?" Ultimately introduced to God, he is asked what he has accomplished in life to warrant a favorable judgement. Hawking begins in a reasonably humble manner, opining upon his childhood, education and awards within the academic and social community. Evidently he assumed that God was unawares of such. God gently encouraged Hawking to continue with his increasingly egocentric boastful exposition and as it went on, he did not notice that as he became more excited, his level of animation increased dramatically, that he as no longer paralyzed, hopping from foot to foot, waving his arms about to most emphatically emphasize his personal accomplishments. In his self described greatness, Hawking remained blind and deaf to his new found physical healing. So God, yes, even he tires of bloviation, asked him what he thought that his greatest accomplishment might have been had he not passed away, to which Hawking said; "Watch, I shall give life." as he scooped up a handful of earth. God merely raised a finger as said "That's my dirt, son."
Hawking was allowed into heaven. But unfortunately, he went in his invalid state, for he never realized that which God had already done for him. His own ignorance, ego and contempt prior to investigation barred him from grasping the miracle, from seeing reality. Indeed, he had had a miraculous spiritual experience which he was unable to see, for he refused the very possibility of a spiritual awakening.
You see, Hawing had no comprehension of how to Humbly ask God for the Quality of Humility. When it has already been gifted to man, all along.

Good story and yes, my life is riddled with running. I once asked a religious man about Heaven being concerned my natural inquisitiveness would never be fully answered. He told me if I were judged worthy to enter into Heaven, I would be unmade so to be compatible with Heaven. Therefore, my nature of questioning and all my other undesirable characteristics would be stripped away so not to sully such a sacred place. This troubled me. Did not God create me with such attributes? Why were they deemed improper? Was there some implication I should develop into a Stepford wife at the present time to make the later transition more efficient? I rejected his view.
When I read Proof of Heaven, Dr Eben described journeying to three distinct areas. At one point he was able to ask questions. This was not a verbal query but an entire experience. The answers were experiential as well and the information shared was immediate and cosmic in level. Impossible to receive in mortal form. There was no time in the linear sense as we know it. He also was shown the incredible expanse. Earth is but a pinpoint of light among billions and billions of like worlds. The presence of God was felt as the highest level of unconditional Love one can experience. I finally got a glimmer of what I was trying to understand.
As I sit here on my porch I am staring at an Alder tree next to a Pepper tree, honeysuckle entwining their trunks. Mountains are all around me in the distance and my road looks dusty as ever. A telephone nearby is bent awkwardly toward another, the crow perched on it doesn't seemed to troubled by it, more concerned where the next meal will be mostly likely. My neighbors white horse is having a siesta in the sun.
I have described one billionth of what I am seeing to you. It would take me thousands of years to impart to you every detail what my eyes see in an instant, even if done, you,cannot see as I do. And this is simply one snapshot of information. Thus, knowing this, I am sure I am not meant to understand the majesty of knowing God fully in this plane of existence. However, by calming my mind and meditating ( which is a form of time suspension) I may get a glimpse of Him. Through a good life, good works and practice, I may extend my glimpse a few more milliseconds. To continue the process is to be grateful for the morsels I receive and not look to my earthy accomplishments as anything everlasting.
We are dust and to dust we shall return. That which is Spirit moves on. This fact should be the foundation how we approach our lives.

I rarely agree with you on anything knuckles, but I agree with this observation. I have been noticing this same slow deterioration over the years. Even some of the perceived 'high end' places are in this same state of decay.
Look at the undersides of bridges as you pass under them. The decaying sidewalks just off the main drags, if they even have sidewalks. Crumbling parking lots with long term potholes. Etc...
We are a defeated people and it shows everywhere, but nobody likes to talk about it.
I live in the Detroit area. Not long ago I went to an evening Tigers' game at Comerica park. Sitting in this shiny, new park I looked over the stadium and saw abandoned buildings all around the stadium, their lights did not come on when it grew dark. Such cognitive dissonance to contrast the two. It's like everyone ignored the fact that everything around them was falling apart while they watched a baseball game. I kept looking at the skyline wondering what it had all come to, that a once vibrant, important city was in its death-throes. And no one cared. How can we be so proud of our country when portions of it are falling into ruin? Even in the more affluent suburban areas many of the roads are turning to sh-t. Things are just not being taken care of. The money is disappearing. But hey, the game's on...

In a range of Road Quality you have Autobahn which gets big stretches repaired each years, but is good concrete. On the other end is my city streets in asphalt, where we have potholes by December of each year.
Rust Proof Paint does exist, but it costs more. I guess Industry and the Economy depend on Federal Contracts for Highway Maintenance.
Was down in San Bernardino/Loma Linda yesterday. Loma Linda has a store that sells recycled food (yes, out of date, didn't sell, whatever), I think it's called 'Simply Bargains' It's a place where you can pick up a pound of frozen bacon for $1.88 (got twelve pounds), and canned food at 4 for $0.99. Yes, it's out of date, but as long as the can isn't bulgedit's still edible. Loaded up again on various stuff, wanted canned mushrooms particularly, but they didn't have any.
The store is in this long strip mall of empty shops, I think it was originally a main chain, Grocery Store acting as the anchor. Next to it is a police station. The store is owned by, and run by an arab family (seemingly hundreds of them, most speak english, but chatter away in arabic among themselves. Owner is a nice guy. Watched as he caught four, three under twelve years old, black kids shoplifting food. He chewed them out, told them they were no longer allowed in the store, and to leave. He didn't call the cops, and he let them take the food.)
Walking into the store there is at least one crazy guy, about twenty-five, that walks around asking for money and twitching like he's got a weird palsy. There's ususally another dozen or so sleeping on the benches or under the trees in the parking lot. Three or four arabs guard the door and softly chase them off when they get too close. Trash and shit litter the entire area, the parking lot is full of potholes.
We go to San Bernardino and pull off on Highland Avenue from the 215. Highland is one continuous pothole. You bang down the road like a tire is in the center of a railroad. We get a friend and his room-mate and take them to dinner. We tell them to decide where to go. We drive about ten miles to Loma Linda to a Denny's. I ask why go so far to a Denny's and am told that they're regulars there and it wasn't safe for two old men to go anywhere closer at night. The Denny's is unusual, it used to have a bar, it's laid out in a funky fashion and it's exterior is stainless steel.
We have dinner in a crowd of screaming children, kids running around, demanding dollars to put in the claw machine, and a general racket. My wife and I are handing balls back to mothers who don't even apologize. Uncle Ray confirms he was a transport pilot in WWII. His room mate is a radio station traffic manager. I tell about my days at WJBU/WJST and being on air once in a while as a fill in. He's not much older than I am. My wife starts telling them her stories and I go out to get a smoke. From what I can tell, there is a large CVS store adjacent and there are about thirty kids riding bikes in the dark. These kids are mixed, black, white, mexican and all are about thirteen or less by two or three years. As I watch, half a dozen come towards the restuarant spread out all over the road. A car comes up along side the store and these kids dart right in front of it, calling the driver 'mother fucker' and 'asshole'. No one got hit because the driver was going slow enough to stop quickly.
The kids gathered on the restaurant sidewalk and lit cigarettes or joints (smelled like joints a bit). I tossed my smoke and went back inside. As I sat down it was decided it was time to go. We pay the bill and Uncle Ray (he's 95) starts out the door. A thriteen year old pushes him into the jam and comes in pushing his bike. I start to grab the little shit as the cashier starts to tell him he can't bring his bike inside, four other kids swarm in pushing bikes going around me. I see Ray is ok, and go to him to make sure that he doesn't get banged into again and get him out of the door and into the car. Now we have the rest of the group doing some sort of mumuration throughout the parking lot. And we avoid them by going around and down some back exit, finding a pothole that had to have been a foot deep, completely unseen in the dark. We get back to his place off of Highland, near the Casino, and cop cars have people pulled over about every block or so.
I spent a couple years in San Bernardino, 63-66, 68-71, and it was a vibrant place. I was walking to school on my own from a few days after the start of kindergarten. There were empty fields, dairies, Orange Groves and Vineyards all over the place. Now it's wall to wall, vermin infested, city suburbs, where gunshots are often, sirens are constant, and everything is a grey dismal shade of despair. It's a true shame.
Yes, I was quite disturbed when I watched Clockwork Orange. Now I am more disturbed how prophetic it really was.

I thought it was me, just being spoiled/picky/bitchy...whatever. I walk into a restaurant/biz and look at the finer details; corners, windows, and (EEEK!) restrooms for cleanliness/quality, or shit, just safety (like bare wires). I have actually seen electric space heaters under sinks in restaurants before (thank God we are paying taxes for code enforcement).
Since the housing bubble, I have lived all around Murica, and I have often thought “Is this how the rest of the country lives?”
Anyways…glad to see I am not alone in my house delusion.

I frequent a couple of places for cheap food and a liquor store.
Notice the Door Handles.
Notice the constant problem with restrooms, where you know they haven't cleaned the restroom for a week (Where you see the leaky faucet months ago, once saw feces painted on the walls and had to tell them about it, once had to tell them a customer put food in the trash a week ago).
If you want to see filthy as well as dangerous because of broken door locks and jammed sliding glass doors, stay at some of those Knights Inns. Be sure to have a backup plan. The two I refused to stay at were so filthy with holes in the walls, faucets pulled out, etc. Hard to beleive the health department lets them stay in business. I saw awhile back that Expedia took them off their site; I'm not sure if they ever let them back on.

I first saw what you were talking about once I married into a Chinese family, and both traveled over there, but also by watching a bit of their TV. Imagine young lvoe movies without sex scenes, shows where dads and kids play together, the kids respect their fathers, and this is seen to be a good thing.
Granted, there are some real problems over there, but I was shocked to see a culture that wasn't dumping on functioning families every chance it got. Nowadays I wouldn't let children see Disney movies, let alone anything else.

Bear spray does work extremely well. It's a staple here in Alaska for those of us who like to fish. No one wants to kill a bear anyway, and with a gun you can miss. For close encouters carry concealed it you want, but make it your backup. The bear spray will knock down anything human. It's also allows you to kick the shit out of your aggressor once he's down. Jerry Pournelle did a whole future history, science-fiction series based on the concept of a US-USSR Co-Dominium. That is, at some point the US and USSR stopped being direct rivals and teamed up to rule the world. Unfortunately, after about 100 years, the Co-Dominium fell apart, resulting in a nuclear war that destroyed the Earth. Luckily, by that time, humanity was colonizing space and the (now homeless) Co-Dominium fleet swears allegience to the strongest planet (Sparta) and establish an interstellar empire.
