Towards A State Of Near Chaos...

Tyler Durden's picture

Submitted by James H. Kunstler via Kunstler.com,

Yes, there is such a thing as “the public,” a term that derives from the ancient Latin, populous (the people), via publicus (of the people), via old French, public — pertaining generally to the mass of adults dwelling in a polity, a society under (political) governance. In the USA, government is vested as a republic, also from the Latin, res publica, meaning the public thing, the vessel that contains the public.

I present these terms to clarify how our society is cracking up. The American public, we the people, lately swoon into a morass of multi-dimensional failure: failure to control their economic lives, to regulate their appetites and their bodies, to understand what is happening to them, to fend off the propaganda and distractions that disable them, and to properly express and direct their wrath at those elements of the polity who deserve it.

True, their awful, epic failures at this moment in history are largely engineered and aggravated by those who have captured the polity and turned it into a looting and racketeering engine. The net result, though, is a self-reinforcing circle of degradation that rots the collective ethos of the public while it destroys the vessel of the republic that contains it.

Societies that act as though they are hostage to these forces of degradation are able to pretend that they are helpless in the face of them; that the public bears no responsibility for its own choices or for the disintegration of the polity they live under. Hence, the current condition of the American public and its disgraceful government.

It’s not difficult to understand how Donald Trump becomes the instrument for the public’s wrath. Whatever his checkered career in land development amounts to, he is at least a freely-functioning and unfettered actor in the political arena. The public enjoys most of all his assertion of independence from the tremendous engine of grift that the republic has become. His arrant contempt for his rivals, and for the disgusting political process erected for the election contest, also thrills a big wad of the public. So far, his actual ideas for governing lack coherence, except for the rather general notion that uncontrolled immigration, and all the mendacious fakery associated with it, is a bad thing for the republic. Beyond that he offers only blustering claims that he is “very smart,” an “artist of deal-making,” a “patriot.”

Almost nothing so far can knock him down or take him out. Fox News tried in last week’s “debate” — which was not a debate at all, really, but a half-assed interrogation — by trying to set the female half of the public against him for his nasty remarks about women over the years. Of course, the dirty secret of both politics and the media is that the common backstage chatter among pols and TV news producers is every bit as vulgar and hateful as anything Trump said. In case you haven’t noticed, all of America has turned into a verbal sewer, especially the virtual public realm of television. I don’t remember anyone complaining about the comportment of the characters in Tony Soprano’s Badda-Bing Lounge. In fact, awards were heaped on the depiction of that behavior. That’s who we are now.

The rise and persistence of Trump raises a more pertinent question: why are all the other candidates such obvious shills for the implacable engine of grift that is destroying the Republic? Why has nobody with the possible exception of Bernie Sanders, called bullshit on the basic operations of the machine? Why have no other persons of real stature stepped forward to challenge the suicidal dynamic of the age?

There are many cycles in history, politics, and economics. One in particular afflicts the American public today: we’re at a cycle low for comprehending what is happening to us. Sometimes societies know very well what is going on and communicate it superbly. Such was the case in the late 1700s when American leaders filed divorce from Great Britain. Can you imagine any of the clowns onstage for the Fox News “debate” playing a role in writing the Federalist Papers? Obviously, the public and its putative representatives today don’t have a clue what is happening. And then, necessarily, they don’t have a clue what to do about it.

The foregoing assumes that they are honorable persons, though, which may not be the case. This is the chief gripe against Hillary Clinton, of course: that she is an unprincipled monster of ambition and little more. That would be my take on her, for instance. Among the Republicans (as in party) only Rand Paul stands out as not appearing to be some kind of puppet shilling for the grift machine. After all, the party is the very embodiment of that machine. And by trying to play nicely in its arena, Rand Paul may lack the fortitude to attack it.

I’m with those who think that the 2016 election campaign is going to be a wild spectacle beyond the current imaginings of news media. I’m serenely convinced that, among other things, the banking system is going to implode so hard and fast well before the nominating conventions that the nation will be in a state of near chaos. What’s out there now is just a tired dumb-show replaying the shopworn themes of an era that is about to slam to a close.

Kunstler does it again. A self-confessed “Life-long Democrat” who has failed to comprehend that the Democrat party of John Kennedy is now the Progressive Party of the Soros-Clinton Machine has the absolute arrogance to point his crooked finger and say “…to understand what is happening to them, to fend off the propaganda and distractions that disable them, and to properly express and direct their wrath at those elements of the polity who deserve it.”

“True, their awful, epic failures at this moment in history are largely engineered and aggravated by those who have captured the polity and turned it into a looting and racketeering engine.”

People living in glass houses shouldn’t throw stones. Look in the mirror James. Expel the scum from YOUR party and see who follows. You might be surprised.

Now if we all had some way of communicating with each other, other than the lib media.....

That's just not going to happen.  Most of the people of this nation have abdicated personal responsibility, and quite frankly I don't think many of them know how to get it back.  Furthermore, they'd much rather lap from the government teat that is conveniently placed before their lips at every level and at every turn in their day and juncture in their life.  It takes a strong mind to refuse government benefits, opportunities and privileges, and most Americans are on some sort of psychotropic pharmaceutical.

Good luck with that revolution.

"why has no one else stepped up?" asks knutsler?

One man did, and he was cheated out of delegates and delibirately ignored by the entirety of the media, and was far too polite and too much of a gentleman to directly call out those responsible....

His name was Ron Paul....

And as much as I like and admire him, to be honest he is too much of a gentleman for the political scene. If we lived in a better, saner, more honest country, people like him would be able to run and get a fair hearing and many would realize they agree with most things he says. But we do not live in that contry. We live in a country where actual ideas, aside from vague notions of building a wall, are not required. Only to be the loudest, most outrageous person you can be. While I find trumps diatribes amusing and great entertainment, he will have to do a lot better than that if he wants my support. And he also better move away from saying things like 'arrest edward snowden'. Thats a no-go for me.

So, instead of the New World Order our masters have planned for us, it may end up being the New World Chaos.  In a morbid way, I hope it happens.  The only way to rid your body of a pathogen is with a high fever and vomiting.  I only hope that the resultant solution is put in place by sane, ethical men (i.e. our Founding Fathers).

An amended First Amendment should read, "Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or allowing one small ethnic group to monopolize the media, or the right of the people to peaceably assemble, or allowing any private banking interests to threaten the nation's debt-free monetary policy."

Exactly.  What is frustrating to me is that for all the talk here from posters about the majority of the population being sheep people continue to talk about when "they" wake up etc...  Shit, if they were able to do that they would not be sheep in the first place and not get fleeced over and over and over.  And when the system does come crashing down, guess what?  The sheep will follow someone new that spins them a fairy tale.  Human beings are a social animal and that means some kind of view will be coalesced.  Unfortunately most of the people will go along with what they get told by "legitimate" and "serious" people and the game begins anew with no real change.

Exactly right.  Take personal responsibility.  Government is a club for those who don't know how to take care of themselves.  If you want to be a member, you register to vote, exchanging various of your rights for legislated privileges, so you can be told how to conduct yourself for a proper and healthy life*.

If you don't need to be told how to wipe your ass, don't register, and if you already have, you'd best send a letter (registered mail ideally but not necessary) to your local county registrar of voters asking them to remove you from the voter rolls permanently.  You will then be exiting the contract you inadvertently entered.  You will be indirectly expressing your withdrawal and withholding of consent to be governed, which is a good statement, but you'll still want to annul the other contracts you've entered into with the state, including driver's license, business license, permits, bank accounts, etc.  Each is a contract in which you exchange a certain portion of your unalienable rights in exchange for privileges, opportunities and benefits provided by the federal government.  You need to duly and clearly roll back each of these contracts--entered into without your knowledge--so as to remove yourself from the US Government Club and act in your own stead, exercising your own power of attorney.

You don't have to be a member of Costco if you don't need any of the benefits it offers.  The US Government is just a Costco of public services.

-Chumblez.

That is a great start.

Here is a book every American should download and read.

http://www.state-citizen.org/Mercier%20-%20Invisible%20Contracts%20%28la...

Invisible Contracts by George Mercier. Published 1985, and with a lot of digressions about Christianity vs. Luciferianism, which are informative in themselves if you're into that sort of thing. But the legal contracts explanations he gives are thorough and extremely informative.

(I'm not American, but have lived in 3 countries with similar systems, so this book has still taught me much.)

You want free of the invisible contracts of the government, that entwine you?

You must have the character to renounce all their services.

e.g., bank accounts, driver's licence (except insofar as they will put you in jail without one, but even then you must specify that it is only in compliance with law and to certify no more than competence on the road), government money (except insofar as using counterfeit will land you in jail - there is much in the book about the strict limits for this)

This includes courts and the cops. You provide services as a business? Make sure you specify, in writing and from the outset (and not waiting for any issue), that if the other person defaults on the contract, you will not call the cops, nor will you take recourse with the courts. You get paid as an employee? You must specify that if they fail to pay you, again, you will not call the cops nor take recourse in the courts. You see, all these are accepting the benefits of the government system, and implicit acceptance of their contracts.

Includes using roads, with the proviso that no alternatives exist -- again, this must be managed very carefully.

It can be done, from what the book says, but it is not a cakewalk.

I do not know how well this info applies today, but it is a tremendous eye-opener into the philosophy that underlies the many invisible tentacles that bind each of us under a government who provides a plethora of implicitly accepted services, for which the tradeoffs include the waiver of any and all natural rights (except when not covered by the contract, which doesn't leave much), paying whatever they demand for these services as fees and taxes no matter how unreasonable, AND the acceptance of any debt that the same government runs up 'on your behalf' as it provides these 'services'. As mentioned, these 'services' do include the courts, the cops, the roads, AND the money system. To the extent we voluntarily accept these 'services' (that is, unless we EXPLICITLY renounce and avoid all VOLUNTARY use of them), to this same extent we have accepted the government's implicit, invisible 'contract' and are no longer covered by tort law (Bill of Rights), but rather by contract law.

It's an insidious, evil system, all right, but the beginning of its defeat is for us to understand what is going on.

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 21:34 | 6412356 logicalman
logicalman's picture

I've looked into quite a lot of this stuff.

Common Law - Contract Law etc.

It's all well and good knowing this, but you have to realise that you are standing alone in front of an army of bureaucrats and hired thugs.

When the legal system is applied asymmetrically it's a menace not a form of remedy.

Mon, 08/10/2015 - 21:50 | 6412395 daveO
daveO's picture

Remove your savings from the system before they evaporate! When the gov. goes bust, many of their 'services' will disappear anyway. Don't get side tracked by the gov. services angle. Worry about protecting yourself ahead of the storm.

I thought Rand was smarter than his father in that he was trying to play the game to get elected and then work from within.  I no longer believe that is the case.  If the best you can do in the debates is prod Statist Cunt Chris Christie to give Obama another hug, you aren't the guy to win the presidency.  Trump spouts better zingers while talking in his sleep.  If Rand can't be anymore dynamic than that his campaign isn't going to make it past Christmas 2015.  Rand has only some of his father's strengths but apparently almost all of his weaknesses.  I'm glad he's a senator but I am completely over Rand Paul for President 2016.  With his platform and knowledge he should be eviscerating these guys.  It's even more embarrassing as Trump has shown the people WANT some strong principled leadership yet Rand, with all the right principles mind you, comes off as squishy.  Yeah we know you understand the problems.  How many people are you willing to piss off to fix them???

I agree that TV is not kind to Rand. You cannot go in front of a low intelligence debate TV audience and start defending and waving around Constitutional Amendments. 90% of the voters don't know them. His arguments were too 'high brow' for the audience. Instead he needs to talk to the people - "Do you want the NSA reading and storing all your text messages and phone calls" sounds a lot better than "We need to enforce the 4th and 14th amendments".

Tue, 08/11/2015 - 12:47 | 6414280 NihilistZero

It goes beyond that.  trump has shown that in this political environment being a dick is a massive favorable!  how's about saying something like:

"I know Chris Christie is comfortable with your ex-husband who works at the NSA reading your personal e-mails, but I'm not.  No Chris, stop the canned responses.  You know that's what happened at the NSA.  It's public knowledge so don't run away from your position on it."

If no one in Rand's camp had the balls to recommend such a vociferous response, especially in light of how the Donald's schtick is playing, then they don't need to be running a campaign in the 2016 presidential race!

Career politicians need to get re-elected and thus spend all of their time dialing for dollars. They cannot afford to live up to Senator Everett Dirkson's favorite maxim - the mark of a good legislator is the ability to take a contributor's money, thank him, and then tell him "no." But that was back in the day when elections were primarily inexpensive radio ads and print pieces in newspapers. The writings and the books of my grandfather, who had only and 8th grade education put to shame the intellectual attainments of 80% of our high school graduates and fully 50% of our college liberal arts graduates. It was a different country when I was a kid in the 1950's and an entirely different electorate.

Then explain how people making over 100K per year, can address a $200 Trillion dollar shortfall in SS, Medicare, and Medicaid.

The entire accumulated wealth of EVERYONE in the US isn't big enough to pay it...much less those who make 100K+ per year.

cigarEngineer, you sounded like you were asking a serious question. I'm not American but I do follow your politics from a distance, so can't really comment on the candidates myself (with the exception of certain war criminals, whose international activities deserve international comment). But since you don't have a lot of serious answers here, I thought I'd post you something I found interesting re: Scott Walker:

http://alibertarianfuture.com/2016-election/scott-walker-wont-get-any-li...

I lean 'libertarian' (if they had libertarians where I live), so this article sort of resonated with me. Chiefly, article claims that Scott Walker:

a) wants to amend the Constitution to get the state more involved in marriage via the gay marriage issue;

b) wants the State to decide what substances are and aren't legal for adults to use, via the marijuana issue; and

c) is a nascent warhawk who loves him some Israel.

So, take the article for what it's worth - I'm not informed enough on your candidates to say for sure, but in light of your question I thought that article might provide a starting point.

PS: And as long as I'm putting in a comment about American candidates on the issues, I thought Trump's tax idea was pretty good (via Denninger & Conservative Tribune):

https://market-ticker.org/akcs-www?post=230493

<<"Trump’s code, which he calls the “1-5-10-15 income tax plan,” is a simplistic way to fix our nation’s broken taxation system, without putting the strain on any particular group of people.

"Under Trump’s tax plan, those making up to...

"$30,000 per year will pay 1 percent in federal income taxes
$30,000 to $100,000 will pay 5 percent
$100,000 to $1 million will pay 10 percent
$1 million or above will pay 15 percent"

Note: No deductions, no exceptions, period.

Your tax return would fit on a postcard.  There would be little to audit (only "how much did you make?") and thus 90+% of compliance costs would disappear.

Now why isn't the media focusing on that?

Incidentally, I have not run the numbers to determine if this is revenue neutral... but shouldn't that be analyzed and shouldn't the media take a good, solid look at it?>>

In waking up you discover not only that the Country you thought you lived in is not only gone, but that it was dead for 80-100 years before you were born.  And the one you loved had been little other than a corpse-puppet, going through the motions of life, for the entire time you'd known it.

Cruz and Paul are both speaking out. Others are either already bought or are still fuzzy. Even though Carson had a nice debate, and is clearly an outsider, his answers were right from the 30 year old Republican playbook.

What annoys me is how the 'establishment' Republicans still dismiss Trump and Cruz. Pat Buchanan was on Hannity radio and trashed both of them, practically saying that only Bush could get to 270 votes.

And to address such a thing (even though he claims he did not) is verboten, regardless of the fact that anyone who has lived with a women KNOWS the truth. More political correctness, as we are not supposed to say what every person has known from the beginning of time. Women continue to take great offense when their "femaleness" is blamed for their behavior, when men are simply assumed to be assholes, a general character flaw.  It is funny that women can take such a suggestion to infer they are of no consequence, when from many people's perspective women rule the world.

What is important is to silence certain motivations. If women were not a major constituency for progressives, the press wouldn't care if Trump called them all whores. Just as they infer about any black person who supports a conservative.

The only real, educated, gutsy candidate is Bernie Sanders.  He's offering the way out of this fearful mess we call America. Break up the banks. Jobs-million of them-A New Deal-fixing infrastructure, modernizing our power grid, rapid rail financed by taxing heavily the super wealthy and slicing the military budget in half. A single payer health plan. A man who marched with MLK and is sympathetic to the problems of being Black or poor in America. He will appoint a Supreme Court Justice who opposes Citizens United. He wants to reinstate Glass-Stegall. The Republicans besides Kasich are a joke. Hillary is a wall street financed candidate. Sanders takes no money from PACs or billionaires or Wall Street. And we can do it. A green new deal. tax the billionaires, cut the defense by 2/3rds. Why are they schills, you ask? Simple. For the same reason pope Francis talks of global warming, open immigration and a host of other socialistic ideas. If one fails to toe the one party line, then the media is ordered to pounce all over the errant victim. That's why Trump is so disdained by media; he cannot be bought, although the tar-and-feather campaign is well underway. Candidates must walk on egg shells, unable to speak anything that might remotely upset the gods of the New World Order. We must face an unfortunate truth; No one gets to be president without the full blessing of the media... Until the New York Times is stripped of its influential power to control the country's narrative, sycophant candidates is about all we're going to have.

Global warming is not a socialistic idea! it's a scientific fact of life. The Arctic is melting. Oceans are rising and glaciers are melting. Temperatures are rising. You know which media outlet is the most influential? Fox News, not the NYTimes. Fox is the voice of the  Republican party. 60% of Americans get their news from them solely and believe they are fair and balanced..

@Pinky; NPR who is in lock-step with the NYT,  has 20,000,000 daily listeners, nationally. It is America's "Voice of Liberalism" and should be defunded (though Mrs. Ray Croc of McDonalds gave them $200M). You're giving Fox too much credit. 60% (180M people?) get their news from Fox? Fox just had their highest rating ever with the debates which were seen by fewer than 24M people.

Per Global warming, Is it natural or caused by humans? That debate rages on. But I think that it is arrogant for we humans to think that our fuel emissions are able to alter the climate given that all 7+billion of us could fit into Australia (7.6 M Sq Mile) with 1.5 million sq miles left over (at the same density rate (1210/Mile) as New Jersey).

+1 and -1 for that comment .

I know that they have happened , but that was the strongest Bi-Polar comment I've come across.

The debate rages on in your mind. It is a waste of my time to argue the proof of global warming to you. Check out the 95% of Nobel Scientists first before you spout your ignorance. What about species decline or the decline of the oceans? do you deny that too?? sad really

Whether global warming is a socialist idea or not, it is a socialist idea to capitalize on it to aggregate immense governmental power. Another crisis too good to waste.

like all of our other crisis's, it seems only big gov can save the day, sidelining our constitution and every construct of freedom in existence.

Pinky, that's called climate.  That honking big yellow electromagnetic ball that appears in the sky each morning runs the show.  So much so that "Glo-bull warming" is documented to be taking place on all of the planets in our solar system.

Try selling Carbon Credits oin Venus and you'll have no takers.

Scientific fact of life my arse. They don't have accurate records going back far enough. To determine whether or not man-made climate change is taking place you need a data set of 10,000 years, not 100 years.

It is the height of arrogance to say otherwise.

I'm sure some will (later) say that voting for Trump was stupid because he was an ineffective leader, "couldn't get anything done" with Congress, and so forth.  However, in my experience that's an improvement.

Vote for gridlock!  Vote for Trump!

p.s.  Webbots agree with JK on banking sector implosion.  There is quite a bit of detail.

how is that different from what we have now?  The idiot in the WH is following is marching orders to the letter.  He is operating on executive orders.  We are at the end of our rope.  I don't see how Trump can do any worse.
