Rand Paul Blasts Donald Trump, Calls Him A "Fake Conservative" & Wannabe "King"

The most accurate and incisive critique of Donald Trump I’ve seen to-date was a piece written by Jeffrey Tucker last month, and highlighted here in the post: Donald Trump the Demagogue. It’s very important to call out people like Trump for the man he is, so we don’t simply fawn and fall for a narcissist, strongman-type as a way to deal with our societal pain and frustration.
Rand Paul has done a great service by coming out with his own Op-Ed on “the Donald” published at IJReview. Here are a few excerpts:
I ran for office because I was tired of being misled by Republicans who promised conservative government and gave us bank bailouts and more debt. The Wall Street bankers got richer and the American taxpayer got poorer.
The Tea Party erupted over dissatisfaction with false conservatives. It amazes me that anyone in the Tea Party movement could possibly consider Clinton/Reid/Pelosi supporter Donald Trump for President.
I honestly have no idea what Mr. Trump’s real philosophy is. He was liberal before he was conservative, and has openly professed for decades that his views are those of a Democrat.
In 1990, he said if he ever ran for office, he’d do better as a Democrat. He became an independent briefly in 1999 before he switched back to registering as a Democrat. In 2004, he identified more of his beliefs as those of a Democrat, especially on economic policy, stating on CNN that“it just seems that the economy does better under the Democrats than the Republicans.” He only registered as a Republican in 2009 before dropping the party again in 2011, only to re-register in 2012.
This is a guy who said in 1999 that he was a strong supporter of the United Nations. He was for partial birth abortion before he was against it. He lavished praise on the bank bailouts. He was for Obamacare before he was against it and has said he’s “liberal on health care.”
Donald Trump is showing he isn’t suited to lead the country, and I think we all need to discuss why.
Frankly, it sounds too much like he is someone used to bullying to get his way. What do you do to a bully? You stand up to him. That’s what I did on the debate stage, and I was the only one.
We don’t need a bully, and we don’t need another President who thinks he is King. We certainly don’t need someone who has driven his companies into bankruptcy four times yet smugly tells us he uses our nation’s Chapter 11 laws to his own personal advantage. All well and good for him – but what of the creditors and vendors he defaulted on?
Voters are hungry for a plain-spoken critique of Washington. But I’m unsure how credible that voice is when it comes from the consummate insider, a man who buys and sells politicians like he does Lamborghinis.
Trump has paid over 1.5 million dollars to politicians from both sides of the aisle, from Harry Reid to Rahm Emanuel to Jeb Bush. The majority of his donations were to Democrats until a few years ago when he began thinking more seriously of making a play for the Republican nomination.
He has, however, put a significant down payment on Hillary Clinton—at least a $100,000 investment in the Clinton “Foundation” in addition to repeated donations to her campaigns—and acknowledges he spoke to Bill Clinton before he decided to pursue the Republican nomination. What kind of access was he purchasing?
It makes me sad to think that Tea Party awakening could be hijacked or hoodwinked by a guy who supported the bank bailouts, supported Obamacare, and continues to support the Clintons.
I was there at the first Tea Party in 2007 and I’ll be damned if I’m going to stand passively by and watch the movement destroyed by a fake conservative.
We owe the American people substantive answers like that, not bluster and bombast. I plan to stand up to anyone who doesn’t have the temperament or ideas to be President. Maybe it’s time for the GOP voters to tell Mr. Trump he’s fired so we can find a serious candidate who will bring real change.
Donald Trump doesn’t actually stand for anything except for himself and his own ambition. He merely wants to be President, and is manipulating people by saying things that push the right buttons. The saddest part is that people can’t see it, despite it being so obvious.

It's funny to see the two least credible candidates go head to head, as if either of them has any chance of getting the nomination. Trump's views on immigration are nothing short of disgusting, and most Americans recognize this, even if a minority of extreme right wingers don't. Rand Paul's views are all-round crazy, just like his father's, and it's unfortunate that he has been allowed to de-rail the debate and distract us from the real issues and the credible candidates that can actually deal with them. Jeb Bush is clearly the front-runner, and any real republican would get behind him in order to stand the best chance at defeating Hillary. Hillary is very strong on all issues, and has widespread support form grass roots liberals all across America - it's going to take a lot to beat her, and the circus at the GOP primary is not a promising start.

The media keeps giving Trump free press because the viewership goes up when he is on, and down when he is not. The magazines & papers sell when he is on the cover.

Anyone criticizing Trump, Paul, or anyone for that matter should note their choice for President as well. Easy to criticize but let's hear who you will vote for...or not.
I personally believe they are all shills to different degrees and while Paul fits this profile as well, perhaps he is playing the game in order to be in the game. He did grow up with RP as his dad so it's probably the best we could possibly hope for.

Rand is pissed because Trump has effectively combined libertarian leanings with a populist America First stance that is resonating so strongly that Rand's timid libertarianism is getting drowned out. Rand's soft and quiet milquetoast campaign is dead. His "Big Hug" zinger to CC was 4th grade level pathetic. I thought Rand was a better politician than his dad, and for that I could forgive a bending of his principals to get elected. In fact he is both a worse politician and a man of lesser principals than his father.

Donald Trump never bashes anyone. He respectfully confronts others on policy issues and clearly explains why he, as a Democrat, should be the Republican nominee. His most presidential moment came when he said that Americans "deserve" to have their rifles taken away.

My problem is I keep finding myself slipping back into those old habits of thinking "there must be someone". Then hoping that one of these guys really does mean what they say. Maybe even "believing" for a few minutes.
Then I remember it's all just a show for the little people of which I am likely smaller than most. I really don't think it matters who gets elected. Hillary, Rand, or otherwise.

If Rand and his campaign had any balls this is what he should have said to Chris Christie:
"I know Chris Christie is comfortable with your ex-husband who works at the NSA reading your personal e-mails, but I'm not. No Chris, stop the canned responses. You know that's what happened at the NSA. It's public knowledge so don't run away from your position on it."
Agreed, Rand needs to stop listening to his so called "advisers" and just start telling it like it is non-stop. Take the gloves off, you might get a bloody nose but you will bloody plenty of others in the process. Bring up TPP, NDAA, NSA (no oversight) and a long list of other things. Get passionate.
Every one of these guys ends up capitulating to the establishment. Once they get elected they run up against the wall of being quarantined. They can stomp their feet and make lots of noise, but the press refuses to give them the megaphone. They soon find that they must yield to the "bigger picture", that they must compromise their principles in order to have even a small chance of getting anything they believe in done. Of course the powers that be use their capitulation against them, they allow the press to take their "no new taxes" pledge into the mainstream and be beaten to death with it. If they are allowed to survive at all, they find they have a leash about their necks with severe limitations on their actions and speech. They ultimately become quiet little drones or fully corrupted and part of the hatchet squad.
I say all this not to be defeatist, but to point out that anyone who is going to change things MUST use the press to do it. They are the filter that lets speech out. The only reason they allowed Trump's voice to be heard is because they thought it would destroy him. Now that it has backfired, they are looking for a new strategy, and that I think will be to use republican candidates to do the destroying. They will provide a megaphone to anyone who will hack at his knees or neck, and plenty will do so, especially Paul, as he has not been heard and is seeking EXPOSURE. This well may turn into a clusterfuck feeding frenzy of all times, where there are so many candidates, all struggling for poll numbers, their face on the teevee. Trump is their only real path. Trump will become Cecil the Lion, popular and beloved by many, lured out in a corrupt way for an unworthy opponent to take him out. Once done, the "killer" will be destroyed and the game will return to normal. The last republican standing will be another moralist who politely keeps his fucking mouth shut, so as to not offend....anyone, and will take his place in the pitiful losers lineup.
To effect change we MUST have access to this megaphone, be it by hook or crook. Trump might survive. He might even be successful. And we might all regret it. But you got to admit, its at least interesting...
Trump is not interesting and neither are the reality TV fans who flock to him.
In 2008 I asked various Republicans who they voted for in the primaries and each one said that they had voted for Ron Paul (although they said they didn't think he could win). Now I have been asking Republicans how they feel about Trump and each one of them has said that he is a "clown" or "crazy."
What I find interesting is how the real world has no resemblance to the "reality" world of TV and the Internet.
It is the process that is interesting. The future of the world rests upon it. It is not inconsequential, but depressing, yes.
If you want to make changes from the inside, then you've got to get in and stay in. Rand saw his dad marginalized by the establishment
when he made his runs, and now he triangulates inorder to stay in the mix. I figure his priniples are sound, but if he picks up his dad's
mantle and rhetoric verbatim, then his outcome will be the same. In fact him calling for a stoppage of the financial "aid" given to Israel
was probably enough to undermine any shot he might of had. Likewise, his disdain for governmental snooping will win him NO friends
with the deepstate. So all you Trump fans probably have nothing to worry about, well not unless your man wins.

But can he do anything? Unless the press allows the people to hear what he has to say, he has no power to change anything. Every compromise he makes will be used to diminish him to his supporters and we know he will be forced to compromise. Look at what they did to Ron Paul last time. It wasn't enough to just defeat him,,,they had to disavow his campaign. Out right rejection which cost them the presidency. But they don't care about the presidency as they are doing their own calculations to preserve THEIR power, THEIR seats. They are more than pleased to be the minority party as they are accountable for nothing while still yelling their (our) principles from the top of their lungs. Holding majority in congress puts them in a very uncomfortable position where they must remain ineffectual while holding the majority. Note that they still act as the minority party in every meaningful way, as they did when Bush was president, when they refused to change anything meaningful like tax systems or immigration. They refused to do anything that they could not claim bipartisanship in...as they want no responsibility...yet regardless, they always take the fall. Complete madness, but like many abused spouses, they seem to grow to it.
Look at how Bush worked to get democratic support for the war in Iraq, yet the moment we invaded, the press and the left were after him with long knives...and never let up. Look at poppy Bush and his "no new taxes". He resisted but made a deal with democrats to raise some taxes for spending cuts elsewhere (which never happened) and before the ink was dry, they were beating him over the head with it.
We see this game played out over and over again. Yet Obama can turn the whole healthcare system on its head and nary a word from the press. Loud noises from the right, only to capitulate to, not eliminating it, but "improving" it. No discussion about IF the government should control 20% of our economy.
Trump may be everything we despise, and he may be a hero. It may take someone with a nuke tied to their belt to get the press to allow them to be heard. I don't know.

Trump is Trump, but he has positioned himself as the candidate who is not playing by the rules- and who happens to have the financial capacity to mount a serious run.

For a moment, I thought that Trump might actually be able to inject a populist message that would seriously challenge the powers that be. Indeed, he may (may) even have altruistic motives (emphasis on may.)
Unfortunately, as shows the national obsession with a potential oblique reference to the known mothly hysterics of women, I think we are beyond any sort of political repair. Even if Trump were serious, gains the support of a large portion of the people, etc.
The reality remains that so much of our economy is completely made up. Further, much real production is completely controlled by the Fortune 100 and Federal Reserve banking system.
Thus to your point, at the end of the day all of this political theater only means anything if you have contracts riding on a candidate. And, to the degree Trump shows how absurd our system is, I think that will accelerate the eventual fracturing of this political system. But otherwise, we should not have inflated expectations in this election cycle.

the traditional democrt was a representative of labor. labor are the everyday people. labor is almost always socialist in some form, from unions to single payer health insurance to taxing the rich to pay for it. the message should have great appeal to the average working stiff or they are stupid.
