Ireland Refuses To Extradite Man To US Because Prison System Is Too Inhumane

Throughout the world, the U.S. prison system is often seen as inhumane and excessively large.
The American prison system is so reviled, in fact, that Irish officials recently refused to extradite an alleged terrorist to the U.S. The court cited concerns that if he were sent to the U.S., he would probably be placed in Colorado’s “Supermax” prison, ADX Florence (Administrative Maximum Facility). The prison is nicknamed Colorado’s “Alcatraz of the Rockies.”
Irish High Court Justice Aileen Donnelly went as far as to write a 333-page report about why the suspect shouldn’t be extradited. One highlight from the court’s ruling was that incarceration at ADX Florence prison would amount to “cruel and unusual punishment.”
Donnelly said the prison “amounts to a breach of the constitutional requirement to protect persons from inhuman and degrading treatment and to respect the dignity of the human being.”
“[P]rolonged exposure to involuntary solitary confinement exacts a significant physiological toll, is damaging to the integrity of the mind and personality, and is damaging to the bodily integrity of the person,” she continued.
According to the Los Angeles Times, “An Irish resident originally from Algiers, Damache, 50, [is]accused of using online chat rooms to recruit American women into a would-be terrorist cell operating in this country and Europe.
One man and two women, including Damache’s wife, have already been convicted in U.S. courts of providing material support to terrorists. And Damache was captured by Irish authorities in 2010 in Dublin on a separate charge of making a telephone death threat and held without bail.”
In 2011, Damache was indicted from a distance in a Philadelphia court on “charges of plotting to assassinate a Swedish cartoonist who depicted the prophet Muhammad as a dog.”
Damache was released in May after serving his time, but the U.S. is still pushing for his extradition.
“I always had faith in the Irish legal system,” he said in a statement presented by his lawyers. “After more than five years in jail, I am looking forward to moving on with my life here.”
The Colorado prison has held some of the most well-known criminals in American history, keeping them in solitary confinement with extremely limited access to outside communication. Notorious inmates include Timothy McVeigh and other people accused of high level terrorism—such as Zacarias Moussaoui, the only person convicted in a civilian court for involvement in the 9/11 attacks.
Lawyers have even argued that incarceration at ADX Florence is worse than the death penalty. Defense expert Mark Bezy called it “a mechanism to cut off an inmate’s communications with the outside world.”

Such nations are increasingly moving to decide issues for themselves as they refuse to be persuaded into following the orders of a more powerful empire.

You know - things are actually changing the other way. In Europe plagued by increasing crime rates and violence mostly due to influx of migrants,especially muslims from Arab world the US prison system is being seen as more attractive than not.
If you talk to ordinary (native) people you will find that sentences of imprisonment for 50 years or more ...may not be good per se but a nessecity. Same goes for capital punishment. In fact even in some ultraliberal countries (Scandinavian , etc) there is a slight popular majority for reintroducing capital punishment.
It´s strange - ordinary citizen don´t like being subjected to theft, beatings, murder , rape and fed up with the liberal propaganda.
The idea of constructing a vast prison system where you actually put these people away for good and make them work, even a privatized system is percieved as more and more attractive.
The problem is too many liberal politicians standing in the way of this for now - but they may have a date with destiny in the form of a lamppost in teir next ten-year future , or so.

Don't really have the time to look for a real analysis at the moment... So apologies as it appears something is going on... Primarily, I am suspicious when societal scale problems are blamed on one thing because societal scale problems are complex. Immigration is the problem. Big government is the problem. This summer I had to warn two separate American families off some targets for their sightseeing. Potentially not healthy for an American to be walking around in large swaths of cities and suburbia in Europe.

While I agree with the spirit of your comment, which I interpret to be that the surge in refugees and immigration is because of our (being an American) detestable, regime change obsessed, foreign policy, most folks I have spoken to from effected countries are quite explicit in distinguishing between Americans and American government. However, I have not talked to anyone freshly displaced due to these events, and I can only imagine how angry they must be.
Even so, since living in Europe, I have found every city I have been in to be so much more safe than a similarly sized city in the States.

The Declaration of Independence is a founding document that precedes the Constitution. I'd say it strongly suggests that amendment rights do not come from the Constitution but that the Constitution simply prohibits the Federal government to violate them. In that sense, they apply to all men.
In any case, the grievances that led to the revolution were pre-Constitution so I guess there was nothing to complain about since they weren't violating the Constitution?

There's this group called the Innocense Project. They have freed many who were wrongly convicted of crimes, especially rape and murder, primarily through DNA evidence. But of course they're such simpletons as well. /sarc

NOTE: I'm a GM man for life, and I sincerely apologise to all GM fans for badmouthing GM products by comparing them to Dodge & Ford. I think GM is poorly managed, but the GM vehicles I have owned have been very well made, and are great in terms of manufacturing. I do not like loaning money to GM Corp. And I don't appreciate that they participate in stock buybacks so that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer.

Last time I checked, which was admittedly several years ago, Fords had fewer mechanical problems than GM or Chrysler. They also were the one of the big three that didn't take the government bailout.

I will tell you this .. the general approach to dealing with prison populations is you let the alphas be alphas and betas be betas. If you're raped and report a sexual assault to a guard, they'll put you in PC and put the rapist in solitary (for awhile). You'll be known as a snitch and your life will get much, much worse from there when you're put back into gen pop. The worst thing you can be is a snitch. It's right down there with child molester. In prison, you're expected to 1) show respect and 2) assert yourself. Make friends, stay in shape, and learn how to fight. As long as you're not the least threatening guy in the room, you'll probably be fine. Most guys in prison are lazy, out of shape sacks of shit, just like the guards. The higher the security level of the prison, the worse it is. At minimum and low sec facilities, basically the only sexual contact you'll see between cons is consensual. As you progress to max sec, well that's a different story. The causes of the US prison culture are really complicated .. it is a mixture of shitty to no parenting resulting in bad behavior, outrageous drug laws, laughable schooling resulting in useless graduates, crooked cops and guards, and a prison system which relies on high incarceration rates to make bank for the investors. It's completely fucked up and the system needs it to stay that way.
