This Is One Way China Deals With Its Massive Auto Excess Inventory

Tyler Durden's picture

Inventories of US autos in China recently exploded, as sales collapsed, leaving 1000s of vehicles gathering dust in Chinese ports... such as Tianjin. With credit collapsing - except for buying stocks on margin - it appears the Chinese have found an alternative way to drawdown that inventory...

With inventories at record levels...

And inventories-to-sales flashing recession red. One wonders if Automaker management 'hopes' for some more apocalyptic scenarios in global ports to drawdown this stack of vehicles that no one is buying.

Prospective buyer's comment

Dear Mr. Liu,

What are your financing options like? I was hoping subprime. I need a car for my daughter that is off to college and will be in the dorms and campus mostly. She likes Eurocentric designs with stylish exterior and interior. She needs to impress peers at college did I mention that too. If no subprime financing is available, can you send me the car by freight when I send you the check? I will pay you slightly more with check, no need to verify if check bounces. I am a mother over the internet that will not go against her word.

Mr. Liu we do not need a test drive we trust that the vehicle is in great condition. We like our cars charred!

Sincerely,

Mrs. Hillary Cunton

You can't calculate yield point of each column without time, temperature, and stress (i.e 1 story and the weight of cars bearing down on that colum).  The temperature part of the calculation alone is a bitch because of difficulty in correctly quantifying air exchange (see fire triangle).

There are enough problems with the 9/11 narrative as it is, but when the internet experts (who couldn't buy STEM degrees from the University of Phoenix with Donald Trump's credit card) start posting... they facilitate the maintainers of the status quo painting everyone who speaks out as a fucking loon.

Fri, 08/14/2015 - 04:27 | 6425179 Wile-E-Coyote
Wile-E-Coyote's picture

The point is any steel looses it rigidity and strength the higher the temperature, it becomes plastic and deforms easily. Any structure will buckle and bow before it melts, it takes a blast furnace to melt steel. Just look at the structures the cars were supported on they sagged and bowed, they didn't collapse uniformly.

Fri, 08/14/2015 - 06:30 | 6425278 Urban Redneck
Urban Redneck's picture

More of the same... It doesn't take a blast furnace to liquefy steel, an ounce of acetylene will liquefy structural steel steel in an open work space with the appropriate amount oxygen mixed in.  Moreover there is a very significant distinction between the amount of heat and/or energy, particularly once motion is involved) required to induce failure in a primary column versus failure in the fasteners used to connect members.  How the cascade progresses is critical.  I have seen more sophistication in BS MSM idiot box graphics than in any publicly available Revit model of the twin towers.  Think about that-- 2000 signatories, and no one has released a model to quantify what you are suggesting... There are very good reasons the petition was worded the way it was.

War is a trciky thing. There is usually a winning and a losing side. If both sides get financed someone get bad loans.

While governments may like the idea of wars losing one tends to be bad for staying in office. Only one country, really, the USA has a history of losing and not suffering the direct consequences. There is something to be said for fighting in faraway lands.

Looks like all the auto glass is gone - melted out? Blown out?l All of it? Been to a number of vehicle fires back in the day, don't remember the glass ever melting out, even when the rest of the vehicle was torched.  Must of blown out, possible given the blast itself - sheeh it - but don't see any glass 'on the floor'.

Strange.

But a really great inventory reduction.

Bullish!

Thu, 08/13/2015 - 22:27 | 6424796 techpreist
techpreist's picture

Yeah, I have the motivation now. I'm going to go get my chemical process safety book and try calculating the radiant heat from the blast/fires.

Seeing no rubber on the wheels (or in a few spots pools of burnt rubber), glass gone, but with the frames still there, I would assume the cars were heated to 500 C or so. 400C will burn up most non-graphitic carbon, 500-600 is enough for glass to soften and warp (saw this a few times in the lab), but you'd need to get much hotter (1000 C) to fully melt the glass.

I've seen a lot of people question the low death count, and one problem here is, if it got that hot, anyone standing in the area would have died pretty quickly, and then be reduced to ashes. It's going to take a while to figure out which smears of ash used to be a person; a terrible fate.

Most of these are described as Renault 'finishing' lots. Not sure exactly what that means - somehow customized for export per each country's environmental regulations or something, I imagine. Of course, it could just be a fancy name for a storage lot, but most do have some kind of large buildings on them. Anyone know?

Great sets of hi-res pics from the Guardian showing the amazing number of cars fried. The pictures themselves are great - the event itself is obviously a great human tragedy. It will take days to dig the bodies out of the migrant worker dormitories that collapsed.

Basically, US spec radios and certain other options get installed there, as well as locally produced (cheaper) things like floor mats and stuff. The local economy and market decides what happens at the POE. For MB there wasn't much point in having expensive techs from Stuttgart glue moldings to a car when the, ahem, 'locals' in Baltimore can do it for half price.

As far as the human tragedy, yeah... you really think the ChiComs are going to dig them out? They're there working without a residency permit, as far as their government cares, they were never there.

Is there a possibility that an American or other auto exporter to China was behind this?

There a lot of possible conspiracy theories:

  • Dude wanted to get revenge on his boss and started the fire, not knowing what he'd kick off. Official story for Bhopal actually; someone stuck a garden hose in the MIC tank, which reacts explosively with water.
  • Chemical company CEO was trying to collect insurance because oil (and therefore chemical) prices tanked. They say the guy's in custody now. I wouldn't be surprised if he gets the death penalty if this plot is discovered because the Chinese do not fuck around.
  • Chemical company middle managers wanted to look good on paper so they cut corners for years, then one day a pipe bursts, none of the safety equipment kicks on b/c it wasn't maintained, and *boom* !
  • Someone who had a stake in the company or nearby did it for any of the above reasons.

With the Chinese it will be hard to get information because the city will not want to lose face, but I'm looking forward to the technical report when it is published in the chemical engineering journals. Usually large-scale disasters get a good bit of research so future plants/storage can be designed to minimize the risk of repeating such disasters. If it was found to be another company doing it, I'm sure a great deal is going to be published on physical security. If you are the company owner

Amazing the cynicism this site creates after a while.  I saw the photos of the charred cars in the article about the explosion, and exacly inventory reduction popped into my head.  Sad thing is that it may well be true.  I am concluding (very reluctantly) that there are mostly nasty greedy people out there, and that humans are not inherently good.

Signed Pollyanna....

After all the fraud and corruption, that's repeatedly denied as happening when in fact it is, is exposed, there's no wonder that people are cynical.

I really don't trust that I'm getting the truth from anyone anymore.

It's become a 'lie now and lawyer up later' society...

Nice conspiricy theory, it would have been much easier to recycle the vehicles for all the materials and build models which actually sell than setting them on fire only to have metal left to recycle, with the other materials in their lungs.

Clearly the Chinese aren't expecting any automaker union strikes. Used to be that one could tell when GM et. al were expecting a strike because large lots of remote desert outside of Phoenix would become filled with brand new cars.

If those are china brand vehicles............that's the best thing to do with them.  Not saying those in the US are all that, as I do own a pretty bad ass Suzuki, but driving down the hiway at a top speed of 70mph in a fucking lego car just don't cut it.

We had an explosion in Qingdao last year, killed 62. A leaking crude oil pipeline vented explosive vapors into storm sewers. Several blocks of a residential street blew up. No conspiracy or explosives necessary. When you live in the middle of a huge tank farm, this is one of the hazards.
