One of the things that sucks about this administration the most is it's bastardization of the concept of hope..... They have even hijacked and debased hope! Orwell was clearly an optimist.

Hope can certainly be a turning point that creates a new insight where change is possible. Usually hope is passive. Hope is waiting for it to happen. Hope is an excuse to let it sit till later.
Read Mans Search for Meaning by Viktor Frankl who survived 4 concentration camps. Interesting to note, hope was not on the survival list. That would get you in a bad mental state. Those who did survive, killed their emotion, made associations if they could be advantageous, worked hard and showed no weakness, did not waste energy on the dying, ate their watery soup and bite of bread with no comment, tried to stay in the center of a group to receive the least amount of beatings and not be noticed.
The book is disturbing and I question my ability in such a circumstance. It still haunts me.

Mans Search for Meaning…
I had to watch the movie "Night and Fog" as a 9th grader in a film appreciation class in a SF east bay suburban high school in 1973. What I remember of that class, (besides smoking dope before the evening airings of Reefer Madness) under the auspices of the recently graduated Berkeley educated instructor were pictures of baskets and symmetrically piled heads of persons less fortunate than the writer. I also remember the scene of bulldozers leveling out piles of human corpses in trenches that were said to be adjacent to Nazi concentration camps.
I will confess much of my innocence died under his tutelage and to this day I don’t know if I can say it was a positive or negative experience.
The book has always struck me as a conundrum as I never sensed the author ever comes out with a full-fledged conviction that the Creator does in fact have a plan and purpose and that His human creatures are designed and provided with the means to enjoy their eternity in a redeemed state.
Jmunderstanding at this point.

Don't know the book, but do have some idea of the concepts. A good friend of my dad who served in WW2 and was in Nagasaki about a week after the US paid a visit. 92 and still has nigntmares regarding what he had to do to survive in jungle warfare - said the only way through was to have no emotion and just do whatever it took to remain alive.
The elite/1 percenter's are doing fine and don't give a flying F about the rest. Will never change as they will protect their positions at all cost. As so many say here, it's a small club and you ain't in it.

You are a 6 year veteran. I found ZH about 4 and 1/2 years ago and was amazed at the quality of content and comments. It took a year to even consider joining. I wish many of the original people would return but to give so much of their free time to share their perspectives is probably unreasonable. I wish them well and am thankful. Many have changed my life.
