The Richest Zip Codes In America In One Map

Tyler Durden's picture

The Hamptons. Beverly Hills. Greenwich, CT. These places are the stomping grounds of the rich and famous. Today’s infographic, courtesy of Visual Capitalist, maps out all of the richest zip codes in America, leaving no country club or gated community unturned.

For each state, the richest three cities or neighborhoods are shown along with the associated number of tax returns. This is a more in-depth version of a similar graphic we posted months ago that showed the incredible wealth in counties surrounding Washington D.C.

Also included in today’s post is the 100 highest tax-paying zip codes throughout the United States.

Accuracy is not the strong point of this map of wealth and zip codes.  The absolute wealthiest zip codes have low reported incomes because all of the wealth is sheltered in overseas accounts.  One such area is Rancho Santa Fe in Southern California (92067).  Many times it has been rated as the wealthiest community in the world.

Hell, they cited the wrong zip code for Tennessee.  Should be 37350 rather than the recently moved 37450.  The only reason it made the list is it is on top of Lookout Mountain, which is one of the smallest zip codes in the state.

High income (based on IRS filings) does not necessaily equate to wealth.

That said, residents of the these areas are clearly doing well.

Maybe these are simply the most highly-leveraged zip codes in the USA.

In small town New Hampshire, just a couple multi-millionares can skew the numbers tremendously.  Sometimes they come up here to spend their retirement in the mountains skiing etc.

The underclass serve them.  Everything from maid service in their McMansions to running snowmaking machines on mountains slopes in the middle of the night when it's 20-degrees below zero - all for barely-scraping-by wages, of course.

But when you average it out it appears like the typical resident is living in the lap of luxury.  Nothing could be further from truth.

Bill 'the pill' Cosby has a sprawling piece of land in Shelburne Center, MA.  Something crazy like 1,000 acres of something.  I remember hearing back in the late '80s that when he bought that property the per capita income of the town went up to some multi-million $ figure.  If you see a stockade fence with signs at every entrance that state, "If you weren't invited, keep going" you've found the place.

I suspect a recent zip re-alignment.  I noticed the supposed top zip code listed for this state was shown by Google and Bing as a parking garage in Chattanooga.  I checked a few maps and one of the older ones showed that zip as a neighborhood with houses in view of the street.  That zip has apparently been re-assigned to downtown.  Then, on another income/age map, I noticed that the zip which reported the highest income in the state was 10 digits off from what was shown on this graphic.  It appears they chose an unfortunate time to release a graphic relying on data which they did not submit to the 'sniff test'.

Fri, 08/14/2015 - 22:05 | 6428098 Raging Debate
Raging Debate's picture

Agree. Data not completely accurate. For example NH. Rye beach sure. Portsmouth isnt listed. And Chicorua? That is a mountain not even a county. The wealth in the lakes regions up north are on Lake Winnepesauke.

You can buy a great house on a Chicorua lake for $250,000. A house on Rye Beach your talking 1.25 million and up, almost the same for Lake Winnepsauke now. You can get a shed for about half those prices.

People in DC or Manhattan would tell you something similar where the money is at. Doesnt mean inequality doesnt exist is spades but lets get the data straight if we are to ever make it better.

Fri, 08/14/2015 - 22:37 | 6428148 odatruf
odatruf's picture

The key is the zip codes.  In NH, Chocorua is a village in the Town of Tamworth and it has its own zip code. As you can see, there are only 283 tax returns within that average. The rest of the town would bring that average way down if they shared that same zip code.

Same for DC. The top zip code isn't even a real area - it's only the US Senate Office Buildings, so some of the Senators must file with that address, which doens't seem accurate.  Some of the House members sleep in their offices while in DC, but I don't think more than a couple Senators do.

PS - Raging, where in NH are you?

Fri, 08/14/2015 - 23:03 | 6428192 Excursionist

Actually, I think the key is the tax savviness and lack of stupidity of the zip code's denizens.

Odatruth - Good point on zips. I am in Fort Myers Florida now but grew up in NH. I left the state when women took over the legislature and it taxed every penis for revenue.

I am going to g back up that way north to White Mountains (have to do the. Saco river drunken binging trip) but will live in Fryeburg ME.

NH ass raped me a bit too much. Politically it is batshit crazy.

While the politics of Maine or more sane now and should be for the next 20-30 years it was bad when I was a young man and NH politics were decent.

When government traumatizes your ass too much you have to vote with your feet. For now, Florida is more business friendly but the gender equality taxation racket is creeping into this state. Very nasty method of taxation. Stunts innovation and productivity. Another example of might makes right and personal survival in the short term by.gov trading long-term prosperity.

de Rothschild Bank is the wealthiest zip code, eh. The USA is peanuts n comparison. And I don't really care about the so-called 'rich' because I am going after the gold bullion instead. While everyone is lynching the 'rich' I will be re-appropriating all the bullion so the rich can't have it anymore. I would kind of like to ring Greenspan's doorbell when all the Marxists surround his house to invite him to the Revolution, but I'll be transporting the bullion instead.

Follow the real money Z/Hers. Hollywood bling will prove to be pretty cheap when the grocery stores start to empty out in tinsel town. Always go for the gold & silver that the crony Capitalists have stashed away before you actually hang the banksters from the street lamps and ransack the wealthiest neighbourhoods looking for food.

I don't know how accurate this could possibly be. I live in Ohio and middle bass is a small island in Lake Erie that may have max 100ish full time residents. I think I'm probably heavy on that by 50+ in the winter time. the closest island is put-in-bay (south bass island) which I think has 200 ish full time residents (including winter). both these Islands are hugh summer/tourist places with hardly anyone living there full time. most people and workers are just there in the summer and leave for the winter to warmer climates. of course the homes on the lake are pricy (up to probably 2+ mil, depending) but I think you can get an average house on either island for less than $200k if your not too picky. it's just very odd to see middle bass on this when there are more expensive and also cheaper islands very close. middle bass is kind of like no mans land. buts that's probably why the state of Ohio spent millions of dollars to put in a marina that can dock hundreds of boats but there is not anything do on the island. they built a water tower and bathrooms with our tax dollars and it sits there mostly empty all summer. not to mention that I paid my tax dollard for it and when I take my boat there I still have to pay way too much to dock there! like everything the gov't does, how any times do I have to pay for shit! the high value island in the area is definitely put-in-bay/south bass island and not middle bass island!

Simplify the tax code and get rid of all the loopholes and this method might have some meaning. The rich can afford the best CPA's, have lots of shelters, and ALWAYS end up paying far less on a percentage basis of their income in taxes than John Q Public does, assuming they pay anything at all. And the more of it - power, money -you try to get, the more "it" takes of you. You are merely the conduit for "It's" nefarious ends - with a few cheap baubles thrown in your direction as a reward.

Go take a  look at the assorted contorted mugs of the Wash./Wall St "usual suspects" - who, at least subliminally, know they've been trapped... and who, in a desperate attempt at extrication, are now projecting their nightmares and blame onto anyone but themselves.
