IRS Admits Taxpayer Account Hack Far More Serious Than Initially Reported

Tyler Durden's picture

Another day, another lie/fib/untruth exposed in government. As WSJ reports, after initially admitting that a major security breach had gained unauthorized access to 100,000 US households tax returns, The IRS has now admitted that in fact more than 600,000 breaches (blamed on Russians) were attempted and an additional 390,000 taxpayers were potentially affected.

As The Wall Street Journal reports,

The Internal Revenue Service said identity thieves’ penetration of one of its computer databases was much more extensive than previously reported, with more than 300,000 taxpayer accounts potentially affected and more than 600,000 breaches attempted.

The IRS reported in May that cyber crooks used stolen Social Security numbers and other data acquired elsewhere to try to gain unauthorized access to prior-year tax return information for about 225,000 U.S. households. That included about 114,000 successful attempts and 111,000 unsuccessful ones.

On Monday, the agency said its review showed that an additional 390,000 taxpayers were potentially affected. That includes about 220,000 additional households “where there were instances of possible or potential access” to prior-year return data, the IRS said in a statement. It also includes about 170,000 additional instances of “suspected attempts that failed to clear the authentication processes,” it added.

...

Only a few thousand of the taxpayer accounts were the subject of attempted refund fraud. But IRS officials believe hackers in many instances were gathering the information to facilitate fraud during the 2016 tax-filing season.

*  *  *

Given the extensive hacks, one wonders if they found Lois Lerner's emails while they were in there?

IRS officials believe hackers in many instances were gathering the information to facilitate fraud during the 2016 tax-filing season.

It's important to file those false tax returns early, so that when the actual serf-taxpayer files with actual data, the IRS records will be completely fucked up for that individual and year.

On careful reflection, I hope some mystery hackers file a fake return for every US taxpayer for every year, so that the entire IRS system becomes unusable......  Make it so.

No. Not that the "hack" was far more serious than initially reported.

I'm shocked that Barack Obama's IRS admitted it.

Maybe the Russians resorted to hacking because they were simply frustrated after dialing the 800 number to the IRSand placed on hold for over an hour and then disconnected--if they could even get thru since most of the time the recording states they are experiencing heavy call volume and to call back later.

One of the little side benefits of using an accountant who is neither a US citizen nor resident is that they can, or perhaps must, file paper 1040's.

It ultimately may not make any difference, but if the IRS wants my tax data entered into the All-Seeing System of the Federal Dark Tower, they can do it themselves.

I don't usually respond to fools but in this case I will.

Carter was not even close to the second worst president. Obama is not even close to the worst. Lincoln/Wilson are tied for worst. Carter was inept, but his vision of an America that didn't get involved with the rest of the world was closer to what the founders wanted of any modern president.

Reagan was not the best either. Whatever he may have achieved, he set up the country for the final strip mining of wealth that's going on today.

How things should work: Your Federal Agency is hacked... Heads of all departments are fired immediately. Agency is placed under new management. All rank and file employees are placed under review, things like oweing back taxes, unauthorized use of credit cards, porn sites found in your browsing history... You are fired as well...

How it does work: Pay raises across the board.

Alternate method of how it works: Pakistanis out of NY posing as IRS agents attempt to socially engineer you claiming you owe back taxes and you need to pay them immediately. Wonder if the FBI finally managed to get around to shutting down this little ring of thieves after I reported them.
