Turkey Declares Curfew In Latest Wartime Escalation, Lira In Record Plunge On More Government Turmoil

Tyler Durden's picture

The tension continues to rise in Turkey as the country hurdles towards civil war and political gridlock.

President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is keen on sending the country back to the polls in an effort to nullify a stunning ballot box victory by the pro-Kurdish HDP in June. Erdogan - who hopes to consolidate his power by rewriting the constitution - has launched a renewed military offensive against the PKK and has been accused of obstructing lawmakers’ efforts to form a coalition government, leading at least on opposition leader to compare the President to Hitler.

In what looks like the latest escalation in a string of wartime crackdowns, Turkey has declared a curfew for citizens of Lice, a district of Diyarbakir province. As Bloomberg reports, "citizens are prohibited from going out on streets from 9pm tonight until 7am on Tuesday."

Additionally, "the Governor of Diyarbakir [has] declared ‘special security zones’ in Silvan, Lice, Kulp and Dicle," citing the PKK "terror" threat.

Meanwhile, the lira had plunged to a new low against the dollar amid the political turmoil, although amusingly, the currency pared some losses after reports indicated Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu is set to make “very nice statements” after another round of coalition talks.

Here's the latest from Bloomberg on the negotiations which appear to have reached a stalemate:

“I believe I’ve tried all paths for a government,” acting prime minister and AK Party leader Ahmet Davutoglu says in televised remarks after meeting nationalist MHP leader Devlet Bahceli today in Ankara.

Bahceli said a coalition with the ruling AK Party isn’t possible

Bahceli also said that MHP wouldn’t support a short-term govt with AKP, a minority AKP govt, or early elections

Davutoglu says next steps to follow meeting with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan

Turkey’s AKP unable to form a govt w/ CHP or MHP: Davutoglu

Davutoglu says he told Bahceli presidency not under discussion during talks to form a govt, while MHP said that making Erdogan retreat to the constitutional limits of the presidency was a precondition for any partnership

Expect Erodgan to call for snap elections soon, paving the way for the complete subversion of the democratic process on the way to the forced institution of an executive presidency which Erdogan claims is already the "de facto" form of government.

How often do you get shit on by a bird, or does a bird fly into your face? Well in these past years:

- French president Hollande gets shat on by a bird during Charlie Hebdo propaganda spectacle
- A bird poops on President Bush during a press conference outside the White House
- Irish Finance Minister Lenihan gets shat on by a bird as he discusses the Yes vote implications on the Lisbon treaty
- A bird flies into Erdogan's head while he is inaugurating a new mosque
- Countless birds shit on reporters

I like it when the Universe is being playful.

Was that sarcasm? I can definitely see turkey falling to a kurdish friendly party, but not physically to the kurds. or even carving out a kurdish territory in the east.

The writing is on the wall. ww3 started in 2013 when Putin stopped the US of A to invade Syria. This will become apparent when smaller countries collapse, then it will be the medium ones, then the core.

Turkey could very well collapse. Erdogan destroyed the Ataturk loyal army, so there is no check and balances anymore. Civil war could very well happen setting a precedent for a NATO country.

The flood of refugees will tip the EU, the EU will say to the amerikan to fuck off, and then who knows?

Yeah, things really improved for Turkey after joing forces and allowing USSA to drop democracy bombs on bad guys huh? A whole bunch of countries already agreed to resume trading with Iran because of the nuke deal. Next month cOngress is going to vote on that. What happens if Iran deal switches to OFF? USSA throws sanctions on the whole world?

Eventually EU gets sick of being pushed around so USSA can fuck with Russia. Turkey might have been better off not aligning with merika and quitting NATO because pipeline benefits to them and EU instead of Nudelman.

Turkey is in a unique geographic position, literally sitting astride the boundary between Asia and Europe.  You'd be surprised at how much Caspian oil flows through the Hellespont on ships, and through Turkey in pipelines to ships in the Med.

The Turkish people will figure out that Erdogan is a US puppet, and Turkey will turn towards the East.  If that happens, US will try to crash it the rest of the way with CIA-funded Islamic extremism.  Maybe bomb ISIS with a couple of C-5's loaded with pallets of cash (or stuff it into a few local banks and let ISIS "overrun" them...).

There's an awful lot at stake with the Iran vote coming up that isn't being talked about too much. If I had to guess I'd say it passes even though the divide seems to be right down party lines.

Unless a back-room deal is done I wouldn't be surprised to see Nutanyahoo back in front of a fawning CONgress.

This so off base, but the Putin fan club will always claim Putin's failures as a victory (or great chess playing).

Syria is mostly destroyed already.  The tempo has increased and foreign jets fly into Syria and do bombing runs at will.  Right past the mighty russsian navy.  Although the zionist wanted the US to do a massive missile and bombing campaign the polls indicated it would be a political liability at home.  There was no intention at the time to put large numbers of US killers on the ground. And why should they, their proxy army is getting the job done and the proxy army can follow the zionist orders and commit atrocities freely.  The intent is to drive out a segment of the population and they are being successful.

BUT all you have to do is look at Putin's latest betrayal of Syria.  Just last week Putin hosted the leaders of the insurgents in Russia.  YES, Putin made the insurgents leaders (butchers all) honored guests in Russia.  The meeting were to discuss the political situation once Assad was overthrown.  The main point of contention was that Putin wants Assad to have some symbolic position and the insurgents want him dead.  Guess who wins.

The mighty Putin has to meet and negotiate with the insurgents (who are winning and almost about to take control) BECAUSE:

1.  Because he is nice guy and wants them to like him

2. Because he is a master chess player and letting another allie fall (Iraq, Libya, Yemen, EUkraine, Serbia) is brilliant.

3.  Because he is impotent.

4.  Because he never intended to protect Syria and was always looking to pick up a much of the remains once Syria fell.  Thus his forcing Assad to give up Syria's chemical weapons and then not giving military protection.

Watch Out Iran.  With Friends Like Putin/Russia .......

"President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is keen on sending the country back to the polls in an effort to nullify a stunning ballot box victory by the pro-Kurdish HDP in June"

In other words, Erdogan and his cronies weren't able to rig it the first time. I doubt they'll make the same mistake twice - maybe open the ballot boxes in pro-Kurdish areas at 9pm, for a 7am close?

Freaks.

Your warning for WWIII will be when N. Korea invades S. Korea at that point you'll need to get to your strategic retreat.   The USA vs Russia/China Hot War is still 5-10 years off, so you have time to prepare.  You can survive if you prepare and have a plan, and after the war things are going to get better. Nuclear radiation from bombs disaptes very quickly, unlike a nuclear reactor.  Don't lose hope.  Look at Japan after WWII and how fast they rebuilt.

Turkey has had an undeclared war with Syria for over 4 years now.  Blowback, like karma, is a bitch.

Turkey joins other failed states like Libya, Iraq, Somalia, Yemen, Syria, Afghanistan, Ukraine  and Pakistan.  The Nobel Prize Winner sure has the touch.

I see it as one of the inevitable economic consequences of becoming an Islamic sh1th0le.  The sad thing is there are many good Turks with Western values and ideals that are powerless to stop this now.

This is not blowback for Syria.  Anything but.

This is blowback for calling out Israel for the false flag attack they conducted in France with the cooperation of french intelligence.

It is blowback for questioning the dollar as the global reserve currency.

There are other instances where Turkey has rocked the boat and openly talked about what is to be unspeakable of.  And that is a threat.

However, of all the regional powers Turkey might be the toughest to safely destabalize.  The west does not want kaos due to the threat of subsequent attacks on ships that sail through the narrow and vulnerable strait.
