East Ukraine's Donetsk Republic Will Hold Referendum To Join Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Following the 2014 Crimean referendum which saw the Black Sea peninsula join Russia shortly after the Ukraine presidential coup and ensuing territorial conflict between pro-Kiev and pro-Moscow regions, many speculated it is only a matter of time before the Donetsk region, subsequently elevated into People's Republic status, which has been engaged in constant warfare with the Kiev army (which is in such bad shape it recently drafted a disabled man without arms) would follow suit.

We now have the answer.

Having waited for over a year for the Ukraine civil war/conflict to be relegated to back page status, if that, Putin has finally given the green light, and as Xinhua reports, leaders of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" are planning to hold a referendum on seceding from Ukraine and joining Russia, the Donetsk-based Ostrov news agency reported Wednesday.

The referendum is scheduled to take place some in early to mid November, or specifically two to four weeks after the Oct. 18 local elections, said the news agency.

The ballot papers for the referendum designed in the colors of the Russian flag have already been printed, it said.

And while neither the rebel leadership nor the Ukrainian authorities have commented on the report yet, the modus operandi is strikingly familiar to what happened in Crimea.

Should Donetsk indeed proceed with a popular secession vote, the result is virtually assured but the bigger question is just how would Europe react considering this would result in another territorial expansion of Russia which would be accused of annexing a region that Kiev has largely given up even pretending it has control over.

In July, leaders of pro-independence insurgents in Donetsk region said they would hold local elections on Oct. 18 without Kiev's supervision as they believed that the Ukrainian government has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk peace agreement.

Last week, violence in eastern Ukraine has sharply escalated after several weeks of relative calmness. On Sunday night, at least 11 people, including nine civilians, were reportedly killed in Donetsk region, marking the worst casualties in the conflict since early June.

Then again, after the recent referendum farce in Greece in which a substantial majority of the population voted for one thing just to get the opposite, maybe history is about to rhyme a few hundred kilometers northeast of Athens.

Russia is more real as a country than Belgium and Switzerland in Europe or anything in the Americas.
It is a country full of....you got it...Russians...an actual bloodline that can be traced back to certain ancient tribes.
Yes there are other minorities living there also.
It is also a country that has been around for a few centuries.
Anything in the Americas has no such lineage. Cannot even claim to hail from the same region of the world. Nothing wrong with that, but your claim that Russia is not a real country is stupid. Even more stupid than a Russian claiming that Ukraine has never been a country until the breakup of the Soviet Union so it has no right to exist.

Yep.

The Kosovo Precedent overturned the last 360+ years of western statecraft. The powerful have the declared their right to forcefully intervene anywhere, at any time, destroying any community or person they please.  The only issue to calculate is whether they think they can get away with it: the international law of the jungle has been re-set... to "moar jungle".

Thankfully, there are still a few national players who, one hopes, cannot be effectively controlled by the Empire.  And, ultimately, what goes around indeed comes around.

Same plan was executed in the Caucasus. Requiring the de-radicalisation of Chechnya. Good thing the Russians are better at it the the west ever was.

The neocons are already out with their propaganda claiming Russia is going after Eastern Ukraine. I believe it is the Ukrainians calling for a referendum. Firstly, you yourself look to me like you are pumped full of western propaganda, perfectly happy to think what you are told to think.

Secondly, the name Ukraine is derived from the Russian word for 'frontier,' so it is not inappropriate to call it 'The Ukraine' as in 'The frontier.' And the Ukrainians themselves, call their own nation what literally translated, is 'the frontier.'

Incredibly important to remember that. One-sided civil war and very smart way for the separatists to end it and all the shelling. (Although I think they want Mariupol in this.)

if Putin is willing to give "green light", you may bet that he is now more than ready for an "all out war". However, the USA is not ready for any real war at all. It seems that the story about the Russian plane, which totally jammed the US Donald Cook, was true after all.

"The US military has for weeks been training Ukrainian forces in US tactics, but the commander of US Army Europe says Ukrainian forces, who are fighting Russian-backed separatists, have much to teach their US trainers. Ukrainian forces have grappled with formidable Russian electronic warfare capabilities that analysts say would prove withering even to the US ground forces."

And even this amazing statement:

Konstiantyn Liesnik, an adviser to the Defense Ministry's reform office and head of its working group for logistics and procurement, noted the US military's experience in recent years has concerned insurgents in Iraq and Afghanistan, not a powerful, organized and well-equipped adversary like Russia. "The future of war is in the Ukraine, and I think in this case our experience is very important to US personnel how war should be in this century and next century," Liesnik said.

And I say: If the USA is only just learning "how a war should be in this and next century" from Ukrainians facing just some non-professional (although Russian-trained) rebels, what chances could the USA have in a direct conflict with Russia, i.e. with the real Russian army?

Ignatius: Also note that it's not a civil war.  Donetsk doesn't want to control Kiev, they want out.

Please define a "civil war".

We had a little disturbance in the USA in the 1860's that was called a civil war. The south didn't want to control the country ... they wanted out.

I think the US "Civil War" is/was misnamed.  The South didn't seek to control, but to secede.

The Russian/Bolshevik revolution was a civil war for control of the country.  It's a distinction noted by others and I think it's correct.

So the EUke's are going to vote.  And just how many troops has Putin commited to placing in EUke after the vote?  None, no change.  The west has committed war crimes and group executions, used white phorporus and gang raped the women - to which Putin did not respond.

So what good is the vote?  One thing Putin might want is some of the land just north of Crimea.  He may use this as an excuse to negotiate away the rest of EUke in order to get the west to accept a smaller portion next to Crimea also going to Russia.

@Nightmareuki--You have to stop forming opinions based upon what the media yappers say. Lack of historical knowledge is mandatory for media employment, and compliance with the official story is required for a continued paycheck. They are paid to repeat propaganda, you are not. Or maybe you are.

In any case, this started a few years ago when Yanukovich would not allow NATO bases to be build along the Russo-Ukrainian border. The psychopaths in DC will not take "no" for an answer, so our overfed, overpaid Neudelman donated $5 billion of our tax dollars to ignite the Maidan fiasco. It turned into a conflagration during the Russian Olympics, because our DC morons figured that Putin could not react during the Games, which meant the whole thing would be wrapped for NATO in a few weeks, and NATO would have fabulous ports all around Crimea.

Like her slaves in the media, Nudelman had no concept of history except that she hated the Russians, who booted her ancestors.  Smart Russians!  So for decades on end her family nursed the hatred of Russians, even to her fluency of the Russian language. You never know when a foreign language comes in handy when planning revolutions. Hence her lousy family problems became our problems.

Are you talking about the yanukovitch who send the police unarmed to control the protests? You got stronger armed policece response to Occupy Wall St. Or do You mean the Maidan was about freeing Ukraine from control of criminals?

Like Jewish gangster Kolomoyski, who orders civilian planes shot down? Or saakashvili, who is not even Ukrainian?

Corruption is one thing, and should be dealt with by rectitude of the population refusing to join in. Burning people alive is a different story altogether, it has to be dealt with with extreme prejudice.

How about you do some reasech before spewing shit.

Berkut attacked first. People were just literally camping on the Maidan to make sure Yanukovich signs the trade/travel agreement with EU but he got 6 billion from Putin and bailed on that promise. Then November 30th 2013 at 3-4am Berkut rolled in and beat the shit out of everyone,(forceful cleanup) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PE-1unKeBP4

only after that that people started arming themselves and the number of protesters exploded, before this there were maybe few hundred people there at any given time. People started bulding barricades to slow down the police.

Russian Separatists/terrorists/imbreeds whataver you wana call them shot down MH-17, they fuckign confessed to it on twitter, VK.com and over intercepted phone calls.

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/Bswg7UGCQAAtv47.jpg

They thought they shot down another Ukrainian plane, there was another one shot down earlier that day. On top of that Russia was trying to distance itself from BUK system saying that it was Ukrinian support fighter that shot down the plane becasue they knew what happened becasue it was their crew and weapon.

You or a liar or a fool who does not know the history and use of the TV instead of the brain.
At the time of the birth of Russia, in the world there was no country what called "Ukraine".
The concept of "Kievan Rus" first appeared in the books only in the 18th century as the name of the era.
I very much hope that you are able to understand the difference between the name of the era from the name of the state.

The below may not be the original posting of the "request for bid" by the USN, but it's all I can find with a quick Google search.

I have zero doubt that the US Navy knows a great deal about Sebastopol, and would like at least influence in the area.  My understanding of the treaty governing the Straits is that non-litoral states cannot have bases on the Black Sea coast (though their ships can visit).   So the idea may have been to merely have an advisory and/or spying facility in Crimea.

Chechnya - is part of Russia. In Chechnya, there was no war. In Chechnya, it was an anti-terrorist operation. Moreover, Chechnya has never claimed independence from Russia.
During the first Chechen campaign, Chechnya demanded special rights as a part of Russia, including the right to print currency - the ruble.
During the second Chechen campaign, Chechnya demanded the creation of a Muslim state in the three republics of Chechnya, Dagestan and Ingushetia.
You should not try to argue that you do not know and does not understand.

The United States lost all the war in all its history, when the US Army received any adequate military response. Russia - this is not Afghanistan, not Korea and even Vietnam.
You know why people say God Bless America?
People say so because America has never fought against Russia.

If Russia decided to take Ukraine they would in Kiev in a couple of days. Then they would disband the current government, shoot any pro EU politicians, do the same to any foreign troops and mercenaries that remained, install their own puppet government and and mostly go home.
Also Russify the officer core of the military and that would be the end.
Unlike westerners that are there now the Russians would blend in. They look and sound the same. Most of Ukraine still speaks Russian. Only the Western parts speak mostly Ukrainian.

No, Puti did not try to stop anything.  He wanted Crimea and he encouraged the events and killing in order to get it.

Firm action at the beginning by the riot police could have stopped this but Putin ordered the Uke leader to have the riot police stand down and not engage.  Even when they were being shot they were not allowed to respond.  Then when Putins orders to stand down had resulting in the revolt gaining enough ground that it could not be prevented, Putin rewarded the Uke leader with safe haven in Russia.

Twice when the EUke's had trapped the WUke forces and were prepared to destroy them Putin came to the aid of the WUke and force the EUke's to allow them to safely withdraw.  Putin did so because the wanted the conflict to continue.

I am perfectly happy with the people of Crimea having a vote on who they are ruled by.

But Putin set it all up by forcing the Uke leader to stand down the riot police when the riots happened.  After that what were the people of Crimea to do?  The criminals in Kiev who Putin helped take power wanted the people in Crimea with russian backgrounds to be persecuted.

Putin wanted Crimea and used and assisted the overthrow of Kiev to get it.  The people of Crimea voted and their vote should be acknowledged.

Two outcomes:

They will vote to join Russia, and soon after Putin will acquiesce on Syria--more war for Syria.

Or, they will vote to join Russia, Putin will still not give on Syria, and so another false-flag will be utilized to draw into the Ukraine and the Donetsk region more mercenaries and troops from the Zion controlled west.--more war for the Ukraine.

Zion is a scheme, not an ethnicity.

Putin has long ago acquiesced on Syria.  Syria is mostly destroyed.

Just last week Putin has the insurgents leaders safely flown to Russia for negotiations.  Yes, Putin is negotiating with the insurgents in hopes Russia will have a place (or a piece of the pie) when Syria falls.  One sticking point is that Putin wants Assad to have some kind of figure head position and the insurgents want him dead (like Libya).  Guess who is negotiating from a position of strength, not Putin.  These attempted negotiations are clearly a show of weakness and desperation.

Ukraine effectively ceased being a country following Victoria Nuland’s 2014 inspired coup (Link: genius.com/Victoria-nuland-on-a-planned-coup-detat-in-ukraine-annotated). Ms. Nuland was so impressed with her work, she bragged about “investing” more than $5 billion (courtesy of US taxpayers) to “help” Ukraine. So where do things stand? A bankrupt country, with high/unpayable debt, high unemployment, increasing poverty, being run by oligarchs and neo-fascists. Have no fear, the IMF (read US and EU taxpayers) are going lend Kiev more money, provided Ukraine follows through on more “structural adjustments”- read- further cuts to subsidies, pensions, increase unemployment, and austerity- in effect, throwing gasoline on a smoldering fire.  Is it any wonder Donetsk wants out?

This is a very remote theater of war for the United States.

Russian can sink all US air carriers in 40 minutes only, even if they stand in their ports in the United States.
US does not have the land army.
All US forces land - is not the army. This forces of the military police, who did not know how to fight against strong land army.
They can only lead stripping areas of weak opponents, after work, air force and navy.
But Russia - this is not a weak opponent. Russia will destroy all aircraft of USA/NATO as an educational target in a shooting gallery.

That's what the west's propaganda machine would like people to believe but it is not going to happen.  If Assad is actually seriously threatened you will see Russian (and Iranian) troops move into Syria within 24 hours.

Also, having all or part of the Donbas region join Russia is a very hot potato for Russia/Putin as it gives the west the excuse to actively join the fighting in Ukraine due to "Russian expansionism" - which they have been trying to provoke from the get go . . . .
