East Ukraine's Donetsk Republic Will Hold Referendum To Join Russia

Tyler Durden's picture

Following the 2014 Crimean referendum which saw the Black Sea peninsula join Russia shortly after the Ukraine presidential coup and ensuing territorial conflict between pro-Kiev and pro-Moscow regions, many speculated it is only a matter of time before the Donetsk region, subsequently elevated into People's Republic status, which has been engaged in constant warfare with the Kiev army (which is in such bad shape it recently drafted a disabled man without arms) would follow suit.

We now have the answer.

Having waited for over a year for the Ukraine civil war/conflict to be relegated to back page status, if that, Putin has finally given the green light, and as Xinhua reports, leaders of the self-proclaimed "Donetsk People's Republic" are planning to hold a referendum on seceding from Ukraine and joining Russia, the Donetsk-based Ostrov news agency reported Wednesday.

The referendum is scheduled to take place some in early to mid November, or specifically two to four weeks after the Oct. 18 local elections, said the news agency.

The ballot papers for the referendum designed in the colors of the Russian flag have already been printed, it said.

And while neither the rebel leadership nor the Ukrainian authorities have commented on the report yet, the modus operandi is strikingly familiar to what happened in Crimea.

Should Donetsk indeed proceed with a popular secession vote, the result is virtually assured but the bigger question is just how would Europe react considering this would result in another territorial expansion of Russia which would be accused of annexing a region that Kiev has largely given up even pretending it has control over.

In July, leaders of pro-independence insurgents in Donetsk region said they would hold local elections on Oct. 18 without Kiev's supervision as they believed that the Ukrainian government has not fulfilled its obligations under the Minsk peace agreement.

Last week, violence in eastern Ukraine has sharply escalated after several weeks of relative calmness. On Sunday night, at least 11 people, including nine civilians, were reportedly killed in Donetsk region, marking the worst casualties in the conflict since early June.

Then again, after the recent referendum farce in Greece in which a substantial majority of the population voted for one thing just to get the opposite, maybe history is about to rhyme a few hundred kilometers northeast of Athens.

Putin is a coward who has destroyed Russia for decades. He is desparately clinging to power by invading other countries illegally. RF is the chief fascist in Europe, & it will disintegrate as Putin dies.

Ukraine has a bright future, as civilized Europeans. Putin has brouht Russians back to the rule of Mongols. They have no future as the men die 10 yrs before the women from Aids, alcohol or lack of medicine.

No need for the racism Heywood. Ever if he (she?) were Irish, there are lots of shitheads in every country.

All of this crap we see now-a-days has been going on for decades in one form or another - which prompted Devo to come out with their parody song - "It's a Beautiful World" in the late 1980's.  It's a very interesting piece (the video I mean - watch the symbolism) which can be found here:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uGEWksYA5Ys

Lyrics . . . .

Its a beautiful world we live in
A sweet romantic place
Beautiful people everywhere
The way they show they care
Makes me want to say

Its a beautiful world
Its a beautiful world
Its a beautiful world
For you, for you, for you

Its a wonderful time to be here
Its nice to be alive
Wonderful people everywhere
The way they comb their hair
Makes me want to say

Its a wonderful place
Its a wonderful place
Its a wonderful place
For you, for you, for you

Hey tell me what I see
Boy and girl with the new clothes on
You can shake it to me all night long hey hey

Its a beautiful world we live in
A sweet romantic place
Beautiful people everywhere
The way they show they care
Makes me want to say

Its a beautiful world
Its a beautiful world
Its a beautiful world
For you, for you, for you

Its not for me (Its a beautiful world)
For you (Its a beautiful world)
For you (Its a beautiful world)
For you (Its a beautiful world)
Not me (Its a beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful, beautiful world)
(Its a beautiful, beautiful world)

Hmmm...plebiscite to be in Novemeber, this leaves the DPR three months to retake and or expand on their territory before thr referendum date. If I were Kiev I'd leave the separatist alone and not give them any reason to kick my ass and steal my backyard. The Dneiper River would make a good boundry though as it runs about midway through the Ukraine but other areas to the west like Odessa may also want to change nations so maybe the eastern mouth of the Danube and inland 160 kms(100 miles) on east to Donestk would be a better solution.

"East Ukraine's Donetsk Republic Will Hold Referendum..."

That's akin to saying "America's Southern Confederacy will hold a referendum..." during the height of the Civil War.

Who the fuck wrote this?

First "Ukraine" is a noun. The adjective is "Ukrainian".

One would think that when writing professionally the author would have the ability to use proper grammar.

Secondly, this is a non event. These republics have already asked to join Russia right after the coup and Moscow declined.

Could they accept them this time? Perhaps, but highly unlikely. The rebels don't even control all of the region and the acceptance of these into Russia would really cause major territorial problems.

One step closer to global war.  The USA is behaving as if it believes it can subdue Russia.  I don't know:  Does America have some kind of a secret weapon to neutralize Russia's nuclear weapons?  If the USA doesn't have some such secret advantage, then its behavior can only be characterized as insane.  Does Washington believe the Russians are Native Americans, or Guatemalans, or Indonesians, or Iraqis; that is, people who can be safely genocided?  At any moment, and merely as a result of an accident, both countries could be destroyed.  That is the kind of "leadership" we have in D.C.

Kiev has violated Minsk II by refusing to negotiate with Donetsk and allow autonomy in the region. Then began serious shelling attacks. Now Putin has been excluded from Minsk III. The US is arming and training the absolutely pathetic Ukrainian army. What can anybody expect? This article seems to be based on an error of some kind, for it conflicts with Russia's strategy.  First, Russia is trying to lure Europeans away from their American masters, and doesn't want to give even the impression of aggressiveness.  Second, sooner or later, the Ukrainian people, who are really Russians or cousins of the Russians, will get tired of Nazism and starvation.  They will have to see that life under Pro-Russan kleptocrats, or even under the Old Soviet Union after Stalin, was 100X better than life under the Nazis.  If Donetsk stayes within the Ukraine, it could influence the outcome of that movement away from jingoism, fascism, poverty, and misery. So mark my word:  This will never happen!

This is old news spread by Kiev regime in order to raise tensions and blame Donbas militia before important national holiday on 08/24. The governments of DPR & LPR passed many times resolutions or expressing desire to join Russian Federation.

All those requests have been shot down by RF parliament on the orders from Putin. The ballots for referendum vote in Donbas were ready last year in late November but never actually used under the pressure of Kremlin.

Instead, Putin promised that he would give Donbas people agreement with Kiev regime that allowed them for complete economical and political/military autonomy (retaining armed forces) of entire Lugansk and Donetsk provinces (more than double of current DPR/LPR territory), from Kiev regime while preserving formal integrity of the Ukrainian state.

Putin failed to do that and came up with much weaker Minsk 2.0. There is no love to Putin in Donbas but rather ambivalence and feeling of abandonment.

Actually direct attack on Putin and Russia herself, nat gas imports as well over thirty humanitarian convoys with food, building materials and sustenance prevented Donbas people from developing totally negative attitudes to their eastern neighbor. They resigned, however, to taking the fate into their own hands and gave up on Putin.

I don't think that they have given up, but are adhering to the Minsk II time table that indecently is part of Minsk I.  There has been a lot of propaganda out the the separatist region that is indicative that they are not going to fight an offensive battle this fall, rather they will vote and try to keep civilian causalities down.  What one really needs to do is compare the death rate from errant shelling to what it was due to car crashes and you begin to see a different picture (although car crashes do not have the political impact).  Kiev has lost and can only be a spoil sport.  The US wants to see more Russian military tactics and will push for more conflict even at Kiev's expense.  They, (the Pentagon) want to see what Russia has and is willing to export.  I think that they are going to be in for a very big surprise, as the separatist may use some very old tactics instead.

So Noodleman and Porkcheeks miscalculated.

It's obvious that they have been trying to lure Russia to invade, but now Putin is going to force Piggy and Miss Piggy to attack Donbass to prevent the referendum in Donetsk.

Russia will be able to counter any Uke military columns with their Iskander, including the bridges they travelled over.  Unless the Russians take out those bridges before the Ukes get more takns across them.

I don't know how many NATO warships are on the Black Sea now, but each can stay only 3 weeks before they must depart.  Erdogan had been letting one NATO ship in for every that left.  We'll see if that policy changes.

Speaking of Erdogan and policy changes:

Just last week Germany withdrew it's Patriots from Turkey followed in short order by America's withdrawal of the same.

So the Russians no longer have to worry about Patriots from the south.

Just ship and aircraft launched missiles.   The NATO missile ships are begging to see the fabled Yakhont that can that can move supersonically, 35 feet over the water; the ones that israel tried to destroy in Lakatia.

The NATO aircraft will want to see once and whether those S-400 are all they are cracked up to be.

Or are they just another version of Khibiny?

What about Khibiny anyway? We'll finally find out whether Khibiny is for real.

Or Zenobia Noodleman will.
