Iran Allowed To "Self-Inspect" Its Nuclear Sites By "Remarkably Naive And Reckless" UN

Tyler Durden's picture

Given that self-regulation worked so well in the financial services industry, The United Nations, according to AP, has decided to allow Iran to use its own inspectors to investigate a site accused of being used to develop nuclear bombs. While the Obama administration was "confident in the agency's technical plans for investigating the possible military dimensions of Iran's former program," John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Republican senator, said of the 'secret agreement' - since The UN normally does this work itself - "trusting Iran to inspect its own nuclear site and report to the U.N. in an open and transparent way is remarkably naive and incredibly reckless."

As AP reports,

Iran will be allowed to use its own inspectors to investigate a site it has been accused of using to develop nuclear arms, operating under a secret agreement with the U.N. agency that normally carries out such work, according to a document seen by The Associated Press.

The revelation on Wednesday newly riled Republican lawmakers in the U.S. who have been severely critical of a broader agreement to limit Iran's future nuclear programs, signed by the Obama administration, Iran and five world powers in July. Those critics have complained that the wider deal is unwisely built on trust of the Iranians, while the administration has insisted it depends on reliable inspections.

A skeptical House Speaker John Boehner said, "President Obama boasts his deal includes 'unprecedented verification.' He claims it's not built on trust. But the administration's briefings on these side deals have been totally insufficient - and it still isn't clear whether anyone at the White House has seen the final documents."

...

The newly disclosed side agreement, for an investigation of the Parchin nuclear site by the U.N.'s International Atomic Energy Agency, is linked to persistent allegations that Iran has worked on atomic weapons. That investigation is part of the overarching nuclear-limits deal.

Evidence of the inspections concession is sure to increase pressure from U.S. congressional opponents before a Senate vote of disapproval on the overall agreement in early September.

John Cornyn of Texas, the second-ranking Republican senator, said, "Trusting Iran to inspect its own nuclear site and report to the U.N. in an open and transparent way is remarkably naive and incredibly reckless. This revelation only reinforces the deep-seated concerns the American people have about the agreement."

And it gets worse...

The document seen by the AP is a draft that one official familiar with its contents said doesn't differ substantially from the final version. He demanded anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue in public.

The document is labeled "separate arrangement II," indicating there is another confidential agreement between Iran and the IAEA governing the agency's probe of the nuclear weapons allegations.

Iran is to provide agency experts with photos and videos of locations the IAEA says are linked to the alleged weapons work, "taking into account military concerns."

That wording suggests that — beyond being barred from physically visiting the site — the agency won't get photo or video information from areas Iran says are off-limits because they have military significance.

While the document says the IAEA "will ensure the technical authenticity" of Iran's inspection, it does not say how.

Self inspect?  Like the Federal Reserve supervises and regulates the very same banks that own it?

The Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System has supervisory and regulatory authority over a wide range of financial institutions, including state-chartered banks that are members of the Federal Reserve System (state member banks), bank holding companies, thrift holding companies and foreign banking organizations that have a branch, agency, a commercial lending company subsidiary or a bank subsidiary in the United States. While the Board establishes supervisory policies, the Board delegates day-to-day supervision to the Reserve Banks.

In the midst of all the hoopla over 'nuclear weapons' and Iran (watch my left hand...), it would be wise to consider the strategic geographic importance of Iran, vis-a-vis Russia, China, oil, the $petrodollar, U.S. banking interests, influence of Congressional members via dual citizenship entities and powerful lobbying groups with ties to foreign countries and their primary interests in certain geographic areas of the Middle East, etc...

In simple terms, keep your eye on the ball, rather than the mastery of the hand that continually moves to deceive.

The pro-Israel lobby in the US fighting against the Iran peace treaty has no better friend than AP writer George Jahn for he has now built a reputation for false stories regarding Iran’s nuclear activities. And Antiwar’s Jason Ditz has documented the liar factor in his latest allegation. No sooner had the AP’s latest invention hit major media yesterday than the war hawks in the US added it as another false story to their media quiver.

As one blogger comments: “Facts play no role in the ‘debate on Iran.’”

Here’s Ditz:

Bogus AP Claim of Iran ‘Self-Inspection’ at Parchin Fuels Condemnation

GOP Hawks, Israel Lobby Latch Onto Allegation to Slam Deal

by Jason Ditz, August 19, 2015

As with most of the really big Iran scandals, it all starts and ends with unsourced and bogus allegations by Associated Press writer George Jahn.

Today, Jahn alleged that the AP had seen a document which would allow Iran to “investigate” the Parchin military site itself in the IAEA’s stead. The article itself makes this allegation in a single sentence, providing no evidence, and then is packed with condemnations from Republican hawks and other opponents of the Iran nuclear deal.

A testament to how quickly truth can be invented when it creates a media-friendly scandal, within hours major media around the world were treating the story as unvarnished truth, with nary an attempt to divine the truth about the inspections, or to dig any deeper into a paper-thin allegation. …

Ironically, the allegation isn’t even a brand new one. …

Jahn has spent so many years manufacturing false claims about Parchin that he can’t even keep the story straight, referring to it in today’s story as the “Parchin nuclear site,” even though it is a conventional military site that was only alleged to have had some past, limited explosives testing related to possible nuclear triggers.

Interestingly enough, this scandal has been built totally independently of a separate round of allegations of Iran “sanitizing” Parchin to scam the international investigators. While the two allegations clearly are self-contradictory, that hasn’t stopped many of the same hawks who are still hyping the sanitizing claims from parroting the new one right along side it. The narrative doesn’t have to make any sense, it seems, as long as it seems vaguely supportive of their position.

The deadline for this vote is mid September and it seems pretty much right down party lines. Israelis will get what they want as usual but it will be hazy as to who voted for what due to gerrymandering tribe style.

Sounds like the usual diversion.  Even if there was a piece of paper about "self-inspection" does this preclude the IAEA from inspecting?  And I suspect Iran would certainly not want Mossad or the CIA snooping around their turf.

“Apparently, AP stands for Absurd Propaganda.”  Will we never learn?

The AP’s George Jahn serves up Israeli propaganda on Iran yet again | MONDOWEISS (2012)

Nima Shirazi on November 28, 2012

The Associated Press‘ favorite conduit for pathetic Israeli propaganda on the Iranian nuclear program, George Jahn, came out with another doozy on Tuesday.  Under a banner touting a “Big Story,” Jahn published an article headlined, “AP Exclusive: Graph suggests Iran working on bomb,” which purported to show proof that “Iranian scientists have run computer simulations for a nuclear weapon that would produce more than triple the explosive force of the World War II bomb that destroyed Hiroshima.” Really.

So what evidence does Jahn provide to back up this oh-so-shocking claim?  Why, a “diagram” that was “leaked by officials from a country critical of Iran’s atomic program,” of course!  And why was it leaked directly to AP, you ask?  In order to, as Jahn puts it, “bolster their arguments that Iran’s nuclear program must be halted before it produces a weapon.”  But don’t worry anonymous critical officials, your secret is safe with nobody. “The officials provided the diagram only on condition that they and their country not be named,” Jahn reveals.  Whew. …

Gee, where on Earth might they be from?  Probably Palau. No, no, wait.  Suriname?  Maybe it’s Denmark.  Or Nepal.  Or Togo in collaboration with the covert, graphing wizards of Luxembourg.

Seriously, though, Israel, we get it, it’s you.  And it’s embarrassing.  Cool it.

By the way, here‘s the graph.  And yes, to reiterate, this was actually published by a respected, mainstream news wire service.

Some say that the alleged desire by Iran for a nuclear weapon is a myth.  See for example http://www.veteranstoday.com/2014/06/07/iran-myths/

Maybe we should start with the Israelis admitting that they have nuclear weapons, a nuclear reactor (Dimona), and a nuclear reprocessing facility.  E.g., https://www.wilsoncenter.org/publication/israels-quest-for-yellowcake-th...

Big deal. Jew State self-inspects, but I forget they don't have nukes either, nor have ever threatened to use them - how could they if they don't have them, one for each Arab city with a population over 100,000 and no doubt they don't have some for you antisemitic European and AmeriKan bastards as well.

Would like to see some cartoons showing Netanyahu taking a giant shit all over the US Congress while they lap it all up and ask for more.

I like the politician going on about that yet I am guessing the politician has no problem with U.S agencies being able to self inspect shit that can impact the world. Or how about the EPA inspecting shit it caused. That's fine, I guess.

I'm also waiting for Israel to be inspected. Oh wait I forgot...it is OK for Israel to have nukes but not Iran. Can pick and choose when it is fine.

The document seen by the AP is a draft that one official familiar with its contents said doesn't differ substantially from the final version. He demanded anonymity because he wasn't authorized to discuss the issue in public.

Just another spineless motherfucker feeding the media fairy stories, and it's the same shit day in, day out, since I don't know when. Good thing he's annonymous too, so AP suck this shit up and serve it to you unadulterated, unchecked - to protect sources of course, not to mislead you.

Of course Iran is going to inspect itself, that's not just another made up story of pure FUD for the credulous.

Those critical of Israel foreign policy and the state's view on Gaza/settlements have legit disputes.  But there is a real difference between Israel foregin policy and the genocidal rhetoric coming out of Tehran.  Israel has been responsible with its nuclear weapons . . . and has NOT directly threatened to wipe another nation off the planet. In fact, Israel has been involved in multiple wars without using its nukes.  I just can't get comfortable with the thought of the Satanallahs in Tehran responsibly handling nuclear weapons.  Like a poisonous snake in my yard, or a nest of hornets, I will terminate that kind of threat with extreme prejudice.

This is great

You muslims have created the problem for yourself,

you guys sell oil in US dollars and that makes dollar valuable

and consequently America & Israel become stronger

why dont you unite and decide :-

NOT TO TRADE EVEN A SINGLE DROP OF OIL IN US DOLLARS

and also not in any currencies of America's allies

And you will see that America crubles to dust

& American economy will crash, dollar will crash

America & Europe will come begging to your feet.
