As Greece struggled to seal the deal on its latest bailout agreement with creditors, it became abundantly clear that embattled PM Alexis Tsipras was going to have a difficult time preserving his coalition government.
In short, the Syriza defections were mounting with each passing parliamentary vote and Tsipras was forced to rely on opposition lawmakers for support.
Realizing that implementing the bailout would be all but impossible considering the extraordinarily fractious political environment and lacking the support necessary to win a confidence vote, it looks as though Tsipras will call for new elections as early as today now that the country has made a critical payment to the ECB. Hello and welcome to live coverage of Greece's political crisis, where it seems that Alexis Tsipras is on the verge of calling a snap on the same day his country managed to secure its first bail-out cash from international creditors in over a year.
Greek state broadcaster ERT is reporting that the embattled prime minister will announce the vote later today. The PM has been meeting with government officials this afternoon and could resign from office having called the vote. September 13 and 20 have been touted as possible dates.
The 41-year-old Syriza leader remains the most popular politician in the country, despite presiding over six months of ill-tempered talks with creditors in which he was forced to capitulate when faced with the threat of a euro exit.
"Anything is possible" Earlier today, a Greek government official told reporters that "everything is possible," when asked whether Tsipras could announce elections today.
According to Greek media, the PM has been holed up with his aides and officials in the Maximos Mansion in Athens deciding on what his next move will be.
Needless to say, political turmoil and the social instability that will invariably accompany it are precisely what Greek stocks, bonds, and banks (not to mention fragile world markets on edge after the yuan devaluation) do not need, and it looks as though someone is getting nervous...
And Greek 2s are not happy as yields spike 130bps...
And the rest of the peripheral European bond markets are contagiously pushing wider...

The Greek military's last foray into civil disarray in the 1960's was ugly and depressing. Ever since the Brits and Americans (traitorous acts of Churchill and Truman) quashed the leftist government in 1948 (after the Greek people had themselves liberated their country from Nazi German occupation in 1944 - the first and only European indigenous partisan movement to successfully do so), and in so doing installed the "Red" team pro-German oligarchic clans in power, the "Blue" team has suffered from the decidedly arch-conservative greek military protectorate (presently managed by General Breedlove) ever since.
All of Greece's current economic and social woes date back to that tragic event. I am fearful, as are many Greeks, that until the fanatical and treachorous global hegemon starts to seriously waver (none to soon, imho), that a violent indigenous reaction to the modern day German/American occupation of their nation state would be a further sad tragedy. That being said, it should and will happen eventually. How much misery as a consequence of our exceptionalist meddling will occur in the meantime is simply what people must suffer through. But that day will come, as surely as the sun shall rise.

Nonetheless, you have no need to pray for us. We are in many, many ways much, much more prepared than most. I have always appreciated your razor sharp commentary and food notes. That being said, overt braggadocio mixed with high-powered ammo won't necessarily get one to the other side of what's coming, no matter how reassurring it is to assert it so. While admittedly, it would be greatly satisfying to blow off the heads of so many deserving sociopaths, I prefer to find a method that guarantees my genetic makeup via my children have the opportunity to pick up the shards.

There is no question that the Greek populous is highly conflicted. And the Greece/Greeks of today are not the same people as 40 years ago. We'll see how ready the Greeks are to bite the bullet. I don't think they are, and there are no credible alternatives to him. They'll back Tsipras and this whole circus will continue. The timing works in his favour too. The fallout from the new crisis (china commodities, oil) hasn't really reached the public conciousness yet, the migration issues are just getting started. Once that really gets going he'll have secured another term to do...euh...what is it he's doing actually? I don't get his game plan at all.
