Why Has The Government Stopped Reporting Lake Mead Water Levels?

Tyler Durden's picture

For months we have been warning that "Vegas is screwed" as water levels continue to plunge in its most crucial reservoirs. Non-government experts are waving red flags that something must be done (and even NASA scientists fear the worst) while the government remains quiet. And then just 3 months ago, Lake Mead water levels mysteriously plunged to levels that were perilously close to emergency for Vegas water supply, then quickly reverted after the government confirmed that a malfunctioning indicator was at fault

Now, we note, having given them time to 'fix' whatever problem there may be, Lake Mead water levels have not been reported since July 9th - six weeks??!!

As Jim R notes rather eloquently,

In the spirit of data obfuscation a la China and Obama, Lake Mead’s daily reporting has not been posted for six (6!) weeks.

At last report (July 9) the lake was 0.6 inch above the critical 1075’ level that will initiate a new round of water wars in the Southwest, including a possible crimp in the IV drip that sustains Phoenix and Tucson.

As a reminder,

If the water level is below 1,075 feet elevation – 4 feet below today’s level – by January 1, 2016, it will trigger a federal water emergency... and water rationing.

Las Vegas Review Journal reported that forecasters expect the level to drop to 1073 feet by June, before Lake Powell would begin to release more water. Assuming “average or better snow accumulations in the mountains that feed the Colorado River – something that’s happened only three times in the past 15 years,” the water level on January 1 is expected to be barely above the federal shortage level.

So, We have one simple question - why did the government stop reporting Lake Mead Water Levels six weeks ago?

The matter is not being reported for the same reason that "Global Warming" disappeared, morphing into the strategically-ambiguous "Climate Change": being wrong is embarrassing!

Pacific Decadal Oscillation (PDO) will bring milder weather to this particular region for years to come. Conditions are reverting to what they were 100 years ago.  It's no big deal unless you live in the area, in which case, move. The exodus from affected states is underway already.  Where I live, wealthy American expats are scooping up big houses and islands.

Back in the 1970s, during similar drought, Mairkins approached Canada with a proposal to export Canadian water.  Wisely, I think, Canadians said 'No.'  Attempts may be made again to siphon the neighbor's supply, but better IMO would be to accept the return to natural desert conditions, and allow markets to adapt and bring farming into new locales. Most of our present economic imbalances were caused to some extent by defense of status quo. It's time to stop fighting change and start embracing it.

There is an obvious exlanation on why Lake Mead is rsing again. Because Lake Powell is up 20 feet from April.  Eventually some of that water gets released in to Lake Mead.  Drought is news.  Normal is not.

Makes sense except that no reporting for 6 weeks is very odd.   Also, that 20 foot rise (if your info is true, which you don't provide a link for), was due to that short period of heavy rain in the region.  Some of that was from the Mexican hurricanes the remnants of which traversed the southwest.  Those are uncommon and might not happen again for several years.  I'd be curious whether the alleged 20 foot rise has been maintained.

Would a picture help? Sounds like a great excuse to go drink a beer by the lake. Lake Powell is too far but I have plenty of lakes further upstream. It has been the wettest year I have seen in over a decade in Wyoming. To the tune of three times more rain this year than the last 10 years, which isn't saying much since we average ~5 inches a year. But the lakes are still full around here.

Here's where Lake Mead water comes from.

The Department of the Interior's Water Reclamation Bribery Division was filling their Depends earlier this year because there was no way they were going to keep Lake Mead above 1075 no matter what they did with the upstream reservoirs. They previously (like last year) forecast June Lake Mead levels to be at 1075 and 8/100ths of a foot. They got lucky with the recent rains in Colorado and didn't' have to do anything drastic.

It's a lot more interesting to look at the one report that anyone dependent on that water cares about: the most recent Bureau of Reclamation forecast - it just came out on the 16th. And the most interesting thing on that forecast is that they are now forecasting levels below 1075 for four months next year (pg. 12) in May - Aug.

They don't like to take Lake Powell below 3600 ft., but they'll be sucking that thing down all the way through next June (pg. 11) to try to keep enough in Lake Mead so it doesn't go below the next action level of 1050.

These are all just forecasts of course, but the writing is on the wall. Barring an unusually snowy winter or prolonged freakishly-heavy rains in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado, they are screwed for next year. There's nothing left to steal from upstream reservoirs and demand isn't going away. If it's dry again next year, Mead is going below 1050.

Oh yeah, that heavy-metal diarrhea from the Colorado spill should be making it's way into Lake Mead this week, but that's only - what - three million gallons? Drink up, Las Vegas!

Go further upstream into Utah and Wyoming and the Lakes are hundred percent full. The water wars have begun and everybody is holding onto their water supply for dear life. Last time I went to the flaming Gorge the reservoir was 100% full during a normal year they normally drained 20 or 30% off by that time. It's called whether it changes every yearBe patient water usually flows downstream, is a personal effort I always flush twice so Texas will have enough water.

Sun, 08/23/2015 - 19:20 | 6459398 Paveway IV
Paveway IV's picture

'Full' as compared to what? They're nowhere near their absolute capacity and they always peak in early summer.

Here's what the Bureau of REclamation says about the current status of Flaming Gorge

Unregulated inflow into Flaming Gorge Reservoir during the month of July was 157,000 acre-feet (AF), or 75 percent of average. The reservoir elevation is 6,034.4 feet.  Observed inflows are averaging 1,700 cubic feet per second (cfs).

Inflows for the next three months are projected to be below average: with August, September and October forecasted inflow volumes at 62,000 AF (70% of average), 50,000 AF (91% of average), and 55,000 AF (93% of average), respectively.

There's no emergency situation in the Upper Colorado Basin, but it's been pretty dry up there relative to past years. You may have seen it during the peak month or two. They would like to squirrel away as much water as possible up there to release into the Lower Colrado Basin reserviors next summer, but there's not much they can do if there's no 'extra' water to hold back. Does it really matter how much Flaming Gorge or any other Upper Basin reservior releases anyways? Too many straws downstream sucking at once - they'll never again have the water the entire system was designed to hold 'normally'.

Vegas has had some very heavy rain storms this summer.  It's likely the watershed areas upstream from Hoover had the same kind of precipitation and it's made its way through the system to Hoover.

As bad as the water situation is, does anyone know if they're still generating the same levels of hydroelectric there or have they had to cut back on that to save the wter?

it isn't local rain that fills Mead, it is runoff from Rockies and Wind Rivers mountains....which had normal or normal plus snowpack.  summer is when it melts and things replenish.  lake powell is rising.  things are dry, but not a disaster (at least in the Colorado R watershed....CA and Sierra Nevada runnoff is worse).

Thanks, elegance.....i stand corrected.  Lake Powell was rising with runoff through mid-july.  Technically the runoff is still going on, but has fallen below the outflow levels, so it is dropping again.  Aside from short episodes, is likely to drop till late next spring.  Normal cycles.  Everybody is hoping for a good wet winter all across the west, for sure.

Yep, Lake Powell going down steadily - explains the stable level of Mead. Probably the real doom and gloom story here is Lake Powell going down sooner than expected?

In any case, this is bollocks article denting credibility of Zerohedge. On same page where Mead isn't updating, Powell is. Cursory Google search would reveal this. And with the amount of ads - that's not a government site anyway...

Fun fact, despite the population explosion, the Phoenix metro area uses less water today then it did in 1958.

I guessing... because huge El Nino is coming up this winter?

Q. Why Has The Government Stopped Reporting Lake Mead Water Levels?

A. Because when the data doesn't fit the official narrative you stop reporting it.

"IV drip that sustains Phoenix and Tucson"

So Phoenix and Tucson have the same water problems? Phoenix has 6 times the amount of thirsty people and NO significant aquifer. Most CAP water from the Colorado enters Tucson and goes directly into groundwater recharge, but in Phoenix it goes to the treatment plant for immediate use.

Also, a large underground storage cavern is being built under Lake Mead. When finished, they will pull the plug on the lake and store water underground to reduce evaporation losses. I can't explain why levels are not being recorded and posted, but it clearly didn't go from 1085 to 1074 to zero.

this is my choice for most likely disaster of the year, people leaving Las Vegas with mattressed tied to the roof of their car. millions of people, no work, no home no money no water.then the power goes out, no lights. you see El Nino will not save Las Vegas in its current likely form because the high than normal prec all happens in a band south of the watershed which feeds the Co river. and one more thing, when the water level in the river drops it allows for black swan situation, even a small earth quake can alter the path of the river or create a lake upstream which would stop the flow for days or month.so california is the most likely place to relocate these people but whats wrong with that picture? this is when i would like to know what the CIA is thinking? they are paid to plan for this kind of thing.

I suggest you become a ZH hero.  Go out to one of the now-dry boat launches, then walk down to where you find water, then walk/climb along one shoreline a ways, and scratch your own mark in the rocks at the current water level.  Then go back every week or two, scratch a new mark, measure the distance between, and report the results here in ZH.

We will thank you.  :-)

PS:  I know that doesn't give the official level, but it does establish the ongoing trend.

Just like ZH to expect the government to do the job! How hard is it for some enterprising person in LV to go to Lake Mead with some waterproof paint and a small brush, mark the water level and return the next week to see how far down the water level has gone. Instead, all you Communists want the government to do the job for you.

Not me! I'm a firm believer in free mark-its. If there are any free mark-iteers in LV reading this post, hows about you go down to the lake and mark it. Mark it again next week and report back to us. I'd do it myself but I live 12,000 miles away.

Why? The sensors are not sensing anything, so there's nothing to report. Someday soon nothing will come out of the taps. When questioned the federal govt can "plausibly" say no one saw it coming, because the sensors didn't sense anything. And, now, as there really isn't anything to see here, (it's all gone down the tubes,) move along! Maybe go somewheres where it actually stays wet!
