Virginia Reporter, Photographer Killed During Live TV Report; "Disgruntled Employee" Gunman Tweets Attack, Shoots Himself
Vester Lee Flanagan - aka Bryce Williams - the gunman who killed two journalists during a live broadcast in Virginia has attempted suicide and is "in a very critical condition", media report.
He was dismissed in 2013, after gaining a reputation for being "difficult to work with," according to the station's management.

As The Daily Beast reports,
In the tweets, Flanagan hinted at possible motives for the shooting. He tweeted about filing an Equal Employment Opportunity Commission complaint and alleged that the reporter had made racist comments. “They hired her after that???” he tweeted. The slain producer, he claimed, complained to HR about him after working together one time. His final text tweet boasted about filming the attack.
ABC News said it recieved a 23-page fax from Flanagan and turned it over to authorities.

A gunman has opened fire on a TV news crew conducting a live broadcast from Virginia shopping center on Wednesday. Police are reporting three victims, though their conditions are currently unknown. The shooter is still on the loose.
Video from the scene appears to show a crew from local TV outlet WDBJ7 being attacked in the middle of a live report at Bridgewater Plaza in Moneta, Virginia.
A reporter was interviewing a woman at the shopping center when the gunman walked into view, firing what sounded to be at least six shots.
The station has confirmed the incident involved one of its crews.
Police are looking for the shooter and hope to soon release a description of the individual to the public.
Nearby Bedford County schools are currently on lockdown as police search for the shooter, ABC 13 reported. The Virginia Department of Transportation has reported a high-priority situation, announcing the closure of Route 122 in the area.

I am a gun rights supporter and avid shooter. Being armed in this situation would have not helped one bit. It was an ambush. Now if everyone around them were known to be armed it may have deterred him but unfortunately most of the country has its head up its ass on the matter.

Unfortunately.....they are NOT ALLOWED to carry weapons while on base outside of designated training facilities (actual ranges). Military bases (aside from the small contigent of guard/police), are HUGE gun-free target-rich environments. ALL government installations are, for that matter. But naturally, everyone is disarmed because.....safety and stuff.

I understand the negatives. But please keep in mind, these cowards often won't attack known armed people. Remember the shooting by the "Joker" in the Colorado movie theatre? He walked into that situation, where people were expected to be unarmed, and he was wearing body armor. A total coward indeed. It might have made a difference. I doubt he would have tried it with a theatre full of people where they had a choice to carry. Very sad how this went down, indeed. They had no chance to defend themselves even if they were armed, but we must continue to defend the right of self defense.

The obvious solution to ensuring we are all safe is to remove our opportunity to defend ourselves. It is increasingly apparent to me that as with our international security, that we must stop arming ourselves and behaving in a defensive way as this only agitates and angers those who already despise us more. While these particular individuals were apparently unarmed, they are still the victim of a society that refuses to capitulate to more hostile forces harboring what in many cases are justifiable grievances. If we would simply voluntarily disarm, people around the world would recognize our moral superiority and likely minimize their hostile acts towards us.
If we would only join hands and sing of peace and brotherly love, this kind of thing would surely stop.

I remember flying commercially on business after 9/11 and noting a palpable white knuckle environment on the plane as everybody looked around and tried to ascertain if threats were near. i believe i read that there are more handguns sold at my local collar county to Chicago gun shop than any location in all of Illinois. I won't name the gun shop, you know who you are. Was the shooter on meds or being treated pharmaceutically for depression? Seems that those drugs lead to these types of horrible events more and more.

Franklin county Virginia has always been known for one thing, having the best moonshine in the State of Virginia, if not the entire country. It is certainly the last place I would expect something like this to happen, as most local citizens are armed and very familiar with firearms.
My initial reaction is that this act of violence is the result of an ex-boyfriend / husband / stalker, and nothing more.
